Jaipur Kawa Brass Band Cabaret
+ Shanti Shanker SOUND THE BRASS AND THE DRUM! Influenced by jazz, Western traditional and Indian music, Hameed Khan ‘Kawa’ – tabla maestro and artistic director of Rajasthani folk group Musafir – has created an Indian Brass Band all of its own. Blending themes from Bollywood, the distinctive Gypsy sound of Rajasthan and a touch of Hindustani classical, the Jaipur Kawa Brass Band has captivated audiences at festivals around Europe. Featuring an astonishing fakir, who swallows a sword right before the audience’s eyes, and a Gypsy Sapera Kalbelya dancer, this will be an evening of amazing energy and humour. The evening will be supported by local dancer Shanti Shanker, who practices Bharatanatyam dancing.

CAPOEIRA SPECTACULAR, LIVE AND IMPROVISED Join us for an exhilarating evening of Capoeira; a combination of martial arts, dance and music, originally developed by African slaves in Brazil. Live and improvised on stage, local Capoeira Mocambo students will enter the Batizado Roda (Wheel of Baptism) to face challenges set by Grand Master Mestre Sombra, visiting international masters and some of the UK’s most prolific Capoeira teachers. The evening will culminate in a Roda for the masters with an improvised dance off by artists who have a lived a lifetime in Capoeira. Expect the unexpected!

Winner of the Guildhall’s English Song Competition in 2010, Raphaela’s recent performances as Pamina in The Magic Flute with Hampstead Garden Opera were warmly acclaimed. She is joined for this evening’s concert by pianist Sholto Kynoch, director of the Oxford Lieder Festival, and an Honorary Research Fellow of Bangor University.

Originally from Russia, Xenia has lived and worked in New Zealand, the UK, the Netherlands, France and Canada. She won First Prize at the 2004 Xavier Montsalvatge International Piano Competition in Girona, Spain, and has recently released a CD recording of Stockhausen’s Mantra with fellow pianist Pascal Meyer, on the Naxos label. This evening’s recital includes French piano masterworks by Ravel and Messiaen, alongside new music for piano and electronics.

The lovely sounds of woodwind and harp join a quintet of strings for the first of three concerts by Ensemble Cymru this season. In between, we hear one of Mendelssohn’s last chamber works and two exciting new pieces by leading Welsh composers.

Hailing from Bangor in Northern Ireland, Gareth Davies-Jones has demonstrated an honesty, depth and passion with his beautifully arranged, evocative and challenging songs. An established talent in the Troubadour tradition, Gareth is a seasoned performer, activist and campaigner, often using his music to promote social justice and working with organisations such as Traidcraft. Lizzie Nunnery’s reputation as a captivating new voice in British folk has continued to grow with the release of her debut album Company of Ghosts in 2010. She has played at folk festivals and venues across the UK, and is also an awardwinning playwright, with her most recent stage play Intemperance receiving a
BILLY THOMPSON: Gypsy Jazz Thursday 27 October, 8pm Powis Hall, Bangor University Billy Thompson (violin), Andy Mackenzie (guitar), Eryl Jones (guitar) & Greg Robley (double bass) Classically trained from the age of eight, Billy Thompson’s mind would often wander from the strict training required in classical music. After a year studying music at Cardiff University, Billy transferred to a more practical degree course at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, where he studied with violin professors Barry Haskey and Dona Lee Croft. Here he also studied jazz and improvisation with piano legend Keith Tippett. Tonight’s concert covers a selection of gypsy jazz standards from the likes of Grappelli and Reinhardt, to modern day masters of the genre, Biréli Lagrène and Didier Lockwood. It promises to be an evening of warmth and exuberance in equal measures.

EARLY MUSIC BANGOR Saturday 5 November, 7.30pm Powis Hall, Bangor University Christian Leitmeir, Thomas Schmidt-Beste & Nicholas Hardisty (directors) Early Music Bangor continues its exploration of the Renaissance and Baroque repertoire, both the well known and the rarely heard. The vocal ensemble presents early 16th century music from the court of the French kings, including works by two of the earliest representatives of this generation – Antoine de Févin and Antonius Divitus – whose music covers the entire range of musical styles, from bawdy popular songs to mass settings. The instrumental chamber groups present little-known ensemble pieces from Bohemia and Austria, and the concert concludes with music that is particularly apt for this date: Handel’s sumptuous Music for the Royal Fireworks.

Electroacoustic Wales welcomes Quebecois composer Gilles Gobeil and performer Suzanne Binet-Audet for a programme of Gobeil’s dynamic and haunting music for live Ondes Martenot and electoacoustic sound. Invented in 1928, the Ondes Martenot was one of the first means by which composers were able to use electronic sound to make music. In Gobeil’s works the strange, expressive song of the Ondes meets the exquisitely crafted digital manipulations of contemporary acousmatic music; and with the programme diffused on Electroacoustic Wales’s 24-speaker immersive sound system, this promises to be a mesmerising and unforgettable experience.
Beethoven: Symphony No. 6 in F major, Op. 68 (Pastoral) Takuo Yuasa (conductor) & David Cowley (oboe) The BBC National Orchestra of Wales opens its first concert in Bangor this season with William Mathias’s Helios; a work evoking the Ancient Greek sun god. Sunlight also accompanies the rustic merrymaking of the peasants in Beethoven’s much-loved Pastoral Symphony, but here too are more terrifying depictions of nature, including a furious thunderstorm. In between these two works, the orchestra’s principal oboist, David Cowley, performs Mozart’s Oboe Concerto: one of the World’s greatest wind concertos, full of vivacious joy and serene lyricism.

Conductor: John Huw Davies The Bangor-based Monteverdi Singers, founded by a former Bangor University Professor of Music, will perform music by Monteverdi (Beatus Vir), Purcell (My Heart is Inditing), Mozart (Te Deum), and a selection of European Christmas pieces. The Monteverdi Singers is a large chamber choir of around 60 members, which draws its members from across North Wales, and which performs a wide repertoire from the Reformation to the present day. It has toured widely across Europe, most recently to Latvia.

The gentle tones of Ravel’s orchestral suite on the fairytale of Mother Goose are contrasted with the more stringent sounds of one of Webern’s most influential early works, and the concert concludes with the broad sweep of Nielsen’s magnificent Sinfonia Espansiva. The programme also includes the Songs of a Wayfarer by Gustav Mahler, who died 100 years ago this year.

Boston songstress Eilen Jewell's music has been compared to Lucinda Williams, Gillian Welch and Peggy Lee. CONCESSIONS Wherever ‘concessions’ is denoted for Pontio events, the following categories are included in that definition: children under 16 years of age, disabled visitors, students and those over 65.
POSTAL CHARGE No booking fee will be charged when you buy tickets, but a 50 pence mailing charge will apply if you request tickets by post. Tickets by post can only be requested until 10 days before the event to ensure they reach you on time. After this, all pre-bought tickets can be collected on the door.
REFUNDS Unfortunately, once tickets have been purchased, we are unable to refund them unless the performance is cancelled. Any tickets unsold in advance will be available to buy on the door. ACCESS We are committed to making our events as accessible as possible. Please contact us if you have any
