A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Friends,

At Bank Street, we believe every child deserves access to high-quality education grounded in strong and supportive relationships with educators who understand how to meet their individual needs and support their ability to thrive in school and in life. With so many overlapping challenges in the world around us, our work has never been more important.

The past year has offered our community unprecedented opportunities to live and practice the core values of Bank Street’s credo and mission, and I am proud of our collective efforts to bring high-quality, equitable education to more children, families, schools, and communities both within the walls of Bank Street and beyond.

In the Graduate School of Education, faculty and staff continued to engage in a rich program review focused on building interest in public school teaching. In addition, we began a multiyear effort to reenvision our early childhood special education degree programs to firmly establish a foundational core that can be shared across all programs.

We also continued to strengthen efforts toward a coherent approach to research, policy, and faculty scholarship. EdPrepLab, our national network of teacher and leader preparation programs, grew its membership to 27 institutions while deepening its equity-focused policy work and strengthening its emphasis on the science of learning across partner institutions’ programs. The Straus Center for Young Children & Families completed 12 research publications and led 26 presentations at professional and research meetings, including reports to guide New York City toward more equitable child care grounded in an understanding of how providers are faring two years into the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, the National Center for Children in Poverty released several new reports, including policy recommendations for supporting the social-emotional development and mental health of infants and toddlers, and assisted several states in identifying policies that promote families’ economic mobility by avoiding “benefit cliffs” using its Family Resource Simulator tool.

In our children’s programs, the School for Children increased the number of faculty leadership roles, identifying 22 faculty members who provide support to colleagues and collaborate with school leadership to advance core aspects of the School for Children’s strategic plan, including work on curriculum and culture, new staff mentoring, and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. With the opening of the STEAM lab last year, new coding, engineering, and design-thinking curricula were integrated into the Upper School to the excitement of both students and teachers.

Our Family Center and Head Start programs continue to strengthen the nurturing, child-centered learning environments they offer to young children and families, developing new partnerships and identifying opportunities for collaboration with other Bank Street divisions. Liberty LEADS received a new five-year contract from the New York State Education Department that will allow us to continue providing after-school, weekend, and summer high school completion and college access programming for 240 students.

2

Across the Bank Street Education Center, we expanded our efforts to disrupt inequity through systemslevel change and helped design better educational experiences for both children and adults. School System Partnerships & Programs expanded its Networks for School Improvement work in Brooklyn and Yonkers with over $20 million from the Gates Foundation, focusing on helping to strengthen math education for the districts’ Black, Latinx, and low-income middle school students. The team is also partnering with Pratt Institute to co-design a new public secondary school, Design Works High School, focused on offering students hands-on, career-connected learning experiences tied to design thinking, the arts, and social justice that will open in Fall 2023.

We’ve also expanded our work supporting school, policy, and system leaders in navigating real-world challenges to advance equity in education. The Center on Culture, Race & Equity (CCRE) secured funding from the Flom Foundation to launch the CCRE Collective, an online cohort program designed to support teams in reimagining and redesigning inequitable systems in learning and community environments. Prepared To Teach grew to include 20 residency partnerships in its national learning network and worked to help pass policy in New York State to create a residency pathway that allows teacher candidates to be paid. The Learning Starts At Birth team also established partnership work across multiple states and has developed supportive tools and resources to help enable the successful design of residency/ apprenticeship programs for early childhood educators in the field.

As you get to the end of this letter, I hope you are as optimistic as I am for the year ahead. I begin each day with renewed hope and excitement about everything we are learning and building together, and I look forward to our continued collaboration as Bank Street works to strengthen and support the communities in which all adults and children—in all their diversity and potentiality—interact and learn.

Warmly,

3

OUR MISSION & CREDO

MISSION

The mission of Bank Street College is to improve the education of children and their teachers by applying to the education process all available knowledge about learning and growth and by connecting teaching and learning meaningfully to the outside world. In so doing, we seek to strengthen not only individuals, but the community as well, including family, school, and the larger society in which adults and children, in all their diversity, interact and learn. We see in education the opportunity to build a better society.

CREDO

Nearly a century ago, Lucy Sprague Mitchell, Bank Street’s founder, wrote a credo that continues to define the spirit of imaginative and critical inquiry that motivates and guides our work today:

What potentialities in human beings—children, teachers, and ourselves—do we want to see develop?

• A zest for living that comes from taking in the world with all five senses alert

• A lively intellectual curiosity that turns the world into an exciting laboratory and keeps one ever a learner

• Flexibility when confronted with change and ability to relinquish patterns that no longer fit the present

• The courage to work, unafraid and efficiently, in a world of new needs, new problems, and new ideas

• Gentleness combined with justice in passing judgments on other human beings

• Sensitivity—not only to the external formal rights of the “other fellow,” but to him as another human being seeking a good life through his own standards

• A striving to live democratically, in and out of schools, as the best way to advance our concept of democracy

Our credo demands ethical standards as well as scientific attitudes. Our work is based on the faith that human beings can improve the society they have created.

5

WHAT I LIKE ABOUT BANK STREET IS THE WORK THEY ARE DOING TO PREPARE TEACHERS WHO INSPIRE STUDENTS TO BE SUCCESSFUL, TO BE AWARE AND INQUISITIVE, SO THAT THIS NEXT GENERATION IS READY FOR THEIR NEXT CHALLENGE.”

OUR ENDOWMENT

Bank Street’s endowment, which totals approximately $46.9M, is primarily spent in three ways. These funds enable us to provide financial aid for students and families in the School for Children and the Graduate School of Education, which makes for a more diverse, representative student body. Additionally, a substantial portion is spent on professional development, which empowers Bank Street staff to fulfill their commitment as lifelong learners and ensures access to tools and resources necessary to provide the highest levels of education and instruction. Lastly, a portion of the endowment is spent on special initiatives and overhead operating expenses. If you are interested in starting an endowment or learning more, please contact Jane Donahue, Senior Director of Individual Giving, at jdonahue@bankstreet.edu or 212-961-3327.

CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS

Since Bank Street’s inception, its Children’s Programs have been dedicated to providing students with meaningful opportunities to learn, grow, and reach their full potential. Today, our mission is more critical than ever before. Gifts made to both the School for Children and Family Center are indicative of the value that our current students, parents, faculty, alumni, and friends place in the Bank Street experience. Your support helps to ensure that we are able to provide financial aid, professional development, and top-notch programming for our students. Like other independent schools, we rely on philanthropy to bridge the gap between tuition dollars and the actual cost of educating each child. When the fiscal year ended on June 30, 2022, we had raised a collective $706K.

By giving to our Annual Fund, you empower us to: remain at the forefront of education no matter what challenges arise, provide financial aid to our students who need it most, and attract and retain top faculty who are thought leaders in progressive education. When the fiscal year ended on June 30, 2022, we had raised a collective $342K.

AS A SCHOOL FOR CHILDREN ALUM, I KNOW FIRSTHAND THE MAGIC THAT IS BANK STREET. IT’S WHERE I LEARNED TO THINK NON-LINEARLY, TO APPROACH ISSUES FROM MULTIPLE PERSPECTIVES, AND TO RESPECT AND VALUE EVERYONE’S INPUT. AND IT’S WHERE MY CHILDREN ARE LEARNING THE SAME. IT’S CRITICALLY IMPORTANT, NOW MORE THAN EVER, THAT CHILDREN ARE TAUGHT TO QUESTION, EXPLORE, AND ANALYZE—AND MOST IMPORTANT, TO THINK FOR THEMSELVES, NOT JUST BLINDLY PARROT WHAT THEY’VE HEARD OR HAVE BEEN TOLD. THAT’S WHAT HAPPENS AT BANK STREET SCHOOL FOR CHILDREN, AND THAT’S WHY I DONATE TO THE ANNUAL FUND.”

AT BANK STREET, I LEARNED WHAT GOOD TEACHING IS, HOW TO SET UP AN EFFECTIVE ENVIRONMENT, AND HOW TO ENGAGE CHILDREN IN MEANINGFUL LEARNING EXPERIENCES.… WE CHOSE TO CREATE A GRADUATE SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP BECAUSE IT’S SO IMPORTANT FOR CHILDREN TO HAVE KNOWLEDGEABLE AND COMMITTED TEACHERS. WE WANT TO DO EVERYTHING

WE CAN TO HELP ENSURE THAT THE CHILDREN MOST AT RISK WILL HAVE THE BEST TEACHERS. TEACHING YOUNG CHILDREN CAN BE SUCH A REWARDING PROFESSION, ONE THAT ENABLES YOU TO MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE.”
