District 13 Teacher Residency Job Search Handbook
Your work in the district thus far has brought insight, joy, and support to the children, families, and colleagues you’ve partnered with. Your work is valuable to us and we are excited to offer you the opportunity to apply for positions in the district for the 2024-2025 school year. Currently, there are enough openings across our schools to welcome your entire cohort into the District 13 family.
This will be a job search process requiring you to engage in outreach to school principals, send cover letters and resumés, go on interviews, and demo your teaching in classrooms. The purpose of this handbook is to provide you with the resources and guidance needed to find, apply for, and accept a position in District 13.
– Tracey, Kim, and JessD13 Residency Program Expectations
Upon acceptance into your program, you committed to participating in the New Teacher Finder through the DOE and seeking full-time teacher employment in a District 13 school in year two of your program, leading to the pursuit of a long-term full-time teaching position in the district. The Q and A below is meant to support your job search efforts and further clarify the expectations of your program.
What’s the deadline for applying to D13 schools?
The teacher application process is currently open for the 2024-25 school year. Check out the timeline on page three of this handbook for step-by-step instructions for applying to the district.
How many schools do I need to apply to in order to meet my commitment to the program? You are eligible to apply for a full-time position at any or all of the 27 schools in D13! We recommend applying to all 27 schools across the district. At a minimum, we expect you to apply to all 18 elementary schools to show your commitment to the district. > See the list of schools in the Resources section
When will I find out if I have been hired?
Principals can make official hiring decisions once their 2024-2025 budgets are released. This happens in June. Every year in the Department of Education (DOE), this results in teachers being hired throughout the summer. For this program, principals are encouraged to release all hiring decisions to teacher residents by July 8th. We hope this allows for early security and helps you to plan for your year ahead.
What if I don’t get hired in District 13?
District 13 sees your commitment to schools and the overarching mission of creating an antiracist district. You have given your time, growing expertise, and deep care to district faculty, staff, children, and families. There will be many job openings for the 2024-2025 school year, far more than five so it is extremely likely you will be offered a position(s) in the district.
Bank Street and the district expect you to wait until July 8th before pursuing another job outside of the district. If you do not get hired in the district, but have made a good-faith attempt to find a fit, you can continue on in your Bank Street program. Bank Street will offer support through the Office of Career Services to help you find a job outside of the district. We will recommend prioritizing Brooklyn North as it’s the closest connection to District 13.

Certification Eligibility Letter
Due to FERPA rules and regulations Bank Street cannot release your educational information unless you request it. Reach out to certification@bankstreet.edu to receive a personalized letter like the one below. > This letter should be uploaded to the New Teacher Finder when you apply to the DOE.
Navigating Internship Credential
Overview: Your program sets you up to qualify for the Internship Credential – a temporary New York State certification allowing you to work in a public school as the teacher of record (head teacher). This allows you to earn a teacher salary while completing your coursework and culminating project. In order to be eligible for this credential, you must have completed at least one-half of the credits required in your degree program. You will be eligible by the end of the Spring 2024 semester and should begin the Internship Credential process immediately upon receipt of a job offer. > You can find a link to the letter as a Google Doc here.
What is it?: The internship credential is a temporary certificate that allows you to accept a job that requires certification as a condition of employment while you are in the process of completing your degree.
Who qualifies?: You must be a matriculated student enrolled in a certification-eligible program, in good academic standing, and you must have completed at least 50 percent of the credits required for the program. You must also be fingerprinted. Both the State Department of Education and the New York City Department of Education will need to clear your fingerprints in order for you to be eligible. Proof of fingerprints must be reflected in your TEACH account with New York State.
Steps to obtain the credential:
1. Find a job. Your job must be in 1st-6th grade and can be as a general or special education teacher. You must be offered a job and your future employer will need to give you an offer of employment letter. Please note: Principals will have been told about the internship process before you seek a position in their school, however this step is always a bit complicated because principals will require you to have certification before offering you a position, but the state will not allow you to receive your Internship Credential unless you have a letter of employment.
> Use the letter from Tracey and Jess to remind the D13 principals of the process
> You can find a link to the letter as a Google Doc here.
2. Submit your letter of employment via email to your SSA, Bettina Tillman (blt@bankstreet.edu), ccing Jess, Kim, Tracey, and Certification Officer, Ann Cox (certification@bankstreet.edu). Your letter must name the grade you are teaching in and your role (general or special educator).
3. Once all of your paperwork is submitted, the Certification Officer will recommend you for the Internship certificate in TEACH and will email you the following:
• Instructions for applying in TEACH
• Internship Registration form
• Letter for your school verifying the recommendation
Navigating Internship Credential (continued)
4. Apply for the internship credential online. You are required to apply for the internship via the state’s Certification Database (TEACH).
5. Complete the Internship Credential Registration Form. Students must register for the Internship Credential during the fall and spring semesters in which they are working under the Credential. The fee is $500. Contact your Student Services Advisor (SSA), Bettina Tillman (blt@bankstreet.edu), if you have questions regarding how to make the payment.
Applying for Initial New York State Certification:
• You must apply for internship certification in the fall and spring.
• You must apply for initial certification upon completion of your program. The Internship Credential is temporary. You will need to complete all of the requirements for initial certification, including exams and workshops, and you will need to submit an online application.
• Each Internship Credential requires that a College faculty mentor meet with you twice per semester while you work under that Credential, as per New York State guidelines. Your mentor will be determined in the 2024-2025 academic year.
