Day one. BALMUN

A

s I said. Day one. All we‘re actually doing is standing around and try to be the best decoration. Frankly spoken, we‘re doing a great job after all. Furthermore, we‘re acting as we were completely preoccupied with the things we‘re technically not doing, and we solve this matter with the highest precision as well. In a few minutes, the rush should be about to start. However, that‘s already been one hour, and therefore the fluff which is crossing the corridors has become pretty interesting. But before my eyelids are not longer able to withstand the boredom and the lack of sleep, the doors are flinging open gasping wide and a mass of young and fresh people in blue Shirts is interrupting my analysis of fluff number 3.241. What a pity. The registration is going to become quite fluent and after 15 minutes the mass has scattered a bit. Now, it‘s time for my researches and interviews. I‘m attacking the crowd, filled with hope I‘ll find someone who doesn‘t fear the conversation with the crazy press aunt. Five victims later I successful triumph over a scribbled sheet of paper, which I hope I still will be able to decode in ten minutes. Well. So much for day one.

How many BALMUNs did you attend? Annemarie: I have always been part of BALMUN, in the first and the third conference I worked as the Conf Manager. Christian: BALMUN VI is my fifth conference, my favorite position was Head of Catering at BALMUN III. Why are you still here? Annemarie: BALMUN is my baby, me and Tanja are kind of the founders. And both of my siblings, Paul and Kathi, also participate and I’m here for supporting them. Christian: I just want that It all works perfect, I have a urged to help. What do you do right now? Annemarie: I study chemistry in the tenth term Christian: I do political sciences here in Rostock.

What has changed ? Annemarie: We simply have a bigger and younger team Christian: For me it is more relaxed because BALMUN has became a habbit. What was the best/worst moment? Annemarie: The best on BALMUN always is Mrs. Koch emotional closing speech. My most embarrassing experience was, when I thought that the director of BERMUN forgot his bag and I looked inside it to find out, whose it was. But unfortunately he stood right behind me just in that moment. Christian: I always love that feeling, when it is all done. I don’t remember something embarrassing ;-). Will you take part next year aswell? Annemarie: That depends on how my live goes on. Christian: I hope, yes!

BALMUN‘s almuni - PART 1

6 Years, 6 Questions How many BALMUNs did you attend? I’m a part of BALMUN since 2009 and my position is anything around Design, Website and technical questions. Why are you still here? I can’t really say why I’m still here even I’m not in school anymore because I started with BALMUN after graduation. It’s always a lot of fun and we have to train our successors. What do you do right now? I’m studying communication science in Wismar, another Baltic city close to Rostock. What has changed? The routine has changed since I’m here. I’m working very close and in a familiar atmosphere with Max. I’m also seeing new faces and I’m always surprised how many people still know me. What was the best/worst moment? My best MUN moment was the closing ceremony where Annemie and Christian had the idea to throw confetti into the crowd. The most embarrassing moment in my BALMUN career was when everything worked out with perfectly with the screens during dress rehear-

Johann Mikkat sals… but of course did not worked during the closing ceremony and the entire conference had to the chance to see the background of our computer instead of the speech of Robert. Will you take part next year aswell? I’m looking forward being a guest next year, but I decided to give up my task and leave an open space for successors.

Max Schröder How many BALMUNs did you attend? It’s my 6th MUN and since I can think of I’m a part of BALMUN’s technical department. Why are you still here? I simply can’t let go and I just wish that it’s going to be a cool conference and time here in Rostock for everybody. That

is what it’s all about. What do you do right now? Right now I’m studying computer science. What has changed? New people, new faces, new challenges. What was the best/worst moment? The most impressive moment was last year’s closing ceremony with Mrs. Kochs speech and the idea with the confetti. There were not that embarrassing situations for me, but maybe… We were a little late setting up the auditorium and forgot to take away our technical cart and it was standing right in the way during the closing ceremony, that was kind of funny. Will you take part next year aswell? Every year I’m telling myself that this is my last conference. But to be honest: this is really my last conference. I’m willing to be a guest any time though. Interviews: CAROLINE LUSCH and KEVIN DUSCH

housing stories By Koray Kocyigit As every year, they are guarding the arrived delegates and ensure that no one has to stay outside in the cold: the host families. Since the BALMUN-Conference has been launched, they contribute an important part that this event can take place. The exciting thing about this is when the parents arrived here at out school and waiting anxiously for their proteges. When the moment has come and the families are getting together they directly start into a conversation, usually. Often they are exchanging information about previous experiences or whatever else arises.

It is always interesting to know which person you are going to face and what you have to be prepared for. In the best case there aren’t any problemes to get along well. After that the package gets into the car and the ride home is starting. Back home it is time to breathe and maybe eat something that the delegates are ready for the upcoming day. Although this whole procedure, “the housing”, is a challenge. It could also lead to problems such as a language blockage. In the end the children and families are glad to receive the chance to make an experience during “Baltic Model United Nations”.

5 Minutes Too Late

...And No Soundcheck By Koray Kocyigit

“Five Minutes Too Late“ on their visit at The Baltic Herald

Delegates at get together on thursday night

To the traditional “get-together“, the official beginning of the BALMUN conference, the hosts, delegates and teacher got a little view in the musical world of the ISG. The school band “Five Minutes Too Late” presented three of their best songs, which were imitated tracks by the American pop icon Adele. The singer, Franzi, convinced with a brilliant performance. Accompanied by her band and schoolmate Niklas at percussions and by herself at the guitar, nothing should turn out wrong. The soundcheck was missing. That’s why the booster wasn’t calibrated and reverbrated very strong, so that the small concert had to be interrupted for a few minutes. Probably it did not have to happen if there would was the time for a sound check. But the band did not let on that it was embarrassing. They made the best out of it and they look forward to the next performance at the BALMUN dance at Saturday night.

iNTERVIEW WITH SECRETARY GENERAL

ARE YOU CRAZY,

Miss wahn? By JENIA BARNERT

The Baltic Herald: Marie you hold the position of Secretary General this year, are you tight enough to manage this challenge? Marie-Luise Wahn: I am really excited right now and I don’t know what is going to happen! There are several responsibilities waiting for me and because it’s my first time as Secretary General I’m a bit scared. But I will be brave and face the given challenges.

The Baltic Herald: How did you prepare yourself and what do you expect from Balmun 2013? Marie-Luise Wahn: Well, first I went shopping for the hottest clothes to wow everybody at the conference and watched a lot of Simpsons episodes in English! Along the way I went to all Balmun ORGA meetings, got in contact with the guest speakers and chairs and wrote texts for the Balum home page. The Baltic Herald: You already tried different positions here.

Marie-Luise Wahn: Being a member of the press in 2011 was really great. The press is full of creative work and makes a lot of fun. The Baltic Herald: Whats about this year’s topic, how hard was it to find one which fits the previous? Marie-Luise Wahn: Yes, it was hard because we were on pressure to continiue Balmun’s tradition of using the letter from the alphabet according to the number of the conference. First we thought that “freedom” sounds too

uncreative but then we noticed the contradiction of freedom and the limited freedom in “frameworks”. Beyond that it’s an alliteration which is easy to remember. The Baltic Herald: If you had the chance to change something in the world, what would it be? I would eliminate the social inecuality and provide equal opportunities everywhere in the world. The Baltic Herald: Are you crazy? Marie-Luisa Wahn: Yes, of course!
