ell, day two starts somehow … uneventfully for the crazy press aunt. I come into the press room, much too early, of course, but it’s already occupied by a 9th grade. Hurray. Nevertheless I can manage to get hold of an empty computer und start with my own researches about the different committees, so I won’t blame myself too hard in the interviews I will (hopefully) do later on. I decide to start with the Disarmament Committee, and I chew it trough - page by page. Half an hour later. I’m very well informed about war technology and definitions by now, and full of motivation I switch to the site of the Environmental Committee. But that’s too much text and so I give up after three minutes. Maybe I’ll do it later. Perhaps. Now, in order to find a new task, I’m wandering like a ghost trough the corridors and try to act as I’d be important. Anyway, there’s nobody who could see my brilliant performance because they’re all sitting in lesson or in the opening ceremony, and so I’m plundering the coffee bar. I’m such a productive person, it’s almost unbelievable. Back in the press room, I finally get a senseful task to do: Take part in the committee speeches of the DC and the SC and report and write what everyone is doing. Thank god I prepared myself a bit. So, let‘s attack some people‘s nerves!

The Grand Opening

By Vanessa Seyfert The second day of BALMUN begun with the welcoming greets and speeches of the guest speakers. There were Thomas Döring, principal of the ISG, Mrs. Dr. Bacher, representative of the town Rostock, Simon Riesche, Information Officer UNRIC, Mr. Dr. Jacobs from the Konrad-Adenauer-Fondation. Because of any delays of the delegates the speeches begun twenty minutes later than planned in the assembly hall of the ISG. Each speech contents completely different themes, thoughtprovoking impulses and emotions. Thomas Döring opened the Opening Ceremony with a hearty welcoming of the delegates from seventeen schools in eleven countries, amongst others France, Poland and Luxembourg. He defined the word “freedom” (“Freedom is when nothing is left to do.”) and confirmed is meaning with questions, examples and wild gestures. Dr. Bacher, former student of the ISG, refer her speech to Rostock, how modern this town is and that it should be

like this all over the world. She hopes that the generation of the delegates (by the way our generation) achieves approaches and changes and applies oneself active for the arrangement of the future world, that things like multicultural life and family supplies could refine. Simon Riesche had the meaning – how the delegates sat there in the assembly hall – the UN should model the model. During he talked about human rights, hunger, war and water crisis and he showed the emotional example of the fifteen years old, Pakistani freedom fighter Malala Yousafzai, which fights for the right of education for girls, a presentation with many facts and pictures was shown. Dr. Jacobs from the Konrad-AdenauerFondation showed different opportunities to create freedom and that freedom exist only in three areas – unity, organisation and publicity – but also that the create of freedom all around the world could not be reached at the time. “Visions are visions” were his last words.

+++ COMMITTEE REPORTS +++ comm Special Conference By caroline lusch

The Human Rights committee is dealing with problems concerning human rights, the Political committee has the politicians of tomorrow, the Environmental committee will be debating all about building up a sustainable environment that will be lasting for our future generations and so on… But you probably asked yourself what’s up with the Special Conference. I mean, this committee sure IS special but more than that. After singing for our birthday boy, the now legal-aged-delegation of Italy, and funny stories and questions, the committee finally broke its ice and build up a familiar and motivated atmosphere to work on the issues of providing measures against youth unemployment as a consequence of the global crisis and raising the awareness for the protection of children and adolescents and setting guidelines for the prohibition of child labor and child prostitution.

After having a typical German lunch with Bratwurst and Sauerkraut, the 20 delegates from all different countries split up into four groups and were in lobbying process. Now and then, visitors from Alumnies, Press and teachers check on the process, delegates and chairs in room 2.06. Today, the SpC is looking forward to welcome the Youth Delegates for Germany, Elise and Florian, and their inspiring speech about youth unemployment. Whatever committee you are part of, we all wish you great motivation, a lot of fun and successful discussions. We are the generation that can set frameworks for freedom for our future generations and become powerful representatives of a generation struggling with the challenges of our globalized world. As sad as it is, the BALMUN dance is already tonight, what means that tomorrow is already the closing ceremony. Let us all enjoy our last full day and we see each other tonight!

Enviromental Committee By jenia barnert This year, the delegates have to encourage measures against the deforestation of the tropical rainforest with special regard to damaged peatland areas and have to set global guidelines for adequate prices, storage and a better distribution of food. Johanna Diederichs and Sophie Lugani are the two enchanting chairs who will guide the delegates throughout the debates and the lobbying process. For getting to know each other, they came up with a little ice breaker. The Delegates were asked to share the secret of what animal they would like to be. The majority wished to be a bird. Later on the chairs invited the delegates to start lobbying by getting

in contact among each other and exchange different resolutions. After the recreational lunch the EC had the pleasure to welcome their guest speaker Thomas Baldauf from the Thünen-Institute for World Forestry. He showed that it is not only a problem in tropical climate zones like the Amazon forest or Africa, but has its history long time ago in Middle Europe. Further, Mr. Baldauf presented institutions who try to monitor the Layers going ahead with the deforestation and talked about possibilities to solve the problem. “We need guidelines immediately”, was one of his urgent receivables. Among other things, he asked the delegates to try to guess how often the total area of Rostock is deforested during the 4 days of BALMUN worldwide… It’s nearly 7.8 times!

ITTEE REPORTS +++ commITTEE REPO Political Committee By anna kondratenko Super Mario, Mickey Mouse, Obelix, James Bond, Doctor Who, Garfield and Forest Gump combined their strengths, to discuss the freedom of speech and information and how to prevent the further increase of the commercial crises. After the icebreaker, where everyone of the 32 delegates and the 2 chairs had to slip into a fictional role, they started with the lobbying for the first topic. After a while they built 4 groups.

Each of them was debating vigorously just before the resolutions were assembled. At 2 pm they went to lunch and afterwards the guest speaker delivered a speech about the free flow of information. Unfortunately, the resolutions were not printed yet and so the chairs started with the punishment. Pakistan and Cuba had to rap the Charter of the United Nations. Afterwards, the PC could finally start with their favourite thing to do: debating. The delegates showed great motivation and fruitful ideas and resolutions.

Smoking Heads? A fruitful debate: This guy in the GA talks to his neighbor while rolling himself a cigarette. The Germans say about people who are thinking on issue very hard, they have “smoking heads“.

Lisa Godomski

Oliver Hartwich How many BALMUNs did you attend? I took part in five Balmun conferences. The most important job I did was Secretary General. Why are you still here? It is an amazing atmosphere here. What do you do right now? I study pharmacy at the University of Greifswald. What has changed?

Because BALMUN is getting more famous, it is easier to motivate people for it. What was the best/worst moment? I will never forget last year’s closing ceremony. I actually never had an embarrassing situation, but I always was scared of something embarrassing to happen. Will you take part next year aswell? Of course!

How many BALMUNs did you attend? This is my sixth conference; I liked the position as the Deputy Secretary best. Why are you still here? Self-evidently, to be part of BALMUN. What do you do right now? Right now, I study Baltic Management. What has changed? It seems like all delegates are getting younger each year. Or maybe it is just me getting older ;). What was the best/worst moment? The most wonderful moment was, when I had to hold my speech at the second conference. I was so nervous but afterwards I was praised so much. Most embarrassing one: I was on quite every gossip-page of the Baltic Herald. Will you take part next year aswell? It would be a pleasure for me if the team invites me again!

Matthias Bannert How many BALMUNs did you attend? I‘ve been on every BALMUN. Sometimes as a participan, sometimes as a guest. I worked in press team and Inner Circle. Why are you still here? I support my good friend Kevin as a layouter for The Baltic Herald. What do you do right now? I do a journalistic education at the Axel Springer Academy in Berlin. What has changed? Everyone seems to be so much younger than me as in year 1. It‘s really time to quit as a participan. What was the best/worst moment? The best and unbelievable thing was to create a whole MUN conference and it‘s newspaper The Baltic Herald. The worst? To recognize getting older. Will you take part next year aswell? Hopefully not.

BALMUN‘s almuni PART 2

6 Years, 6 Questions

How many BALMUNs did you attend? My third conference and Head of Staff. Why are you still here?

I want to meet my friends again, and many of them come together at this year’s conference. What do you do right now?

Shu-Yi Ngee Interviews: KEVIN DUSCH

I do an apprenticeship at a school of hotel management. What has changed? There is more know-how, more profes-

sionalism. What was the best/worst moment? I love everything that has to do with BALMUN. Some things always go wrong, but there was nothing really embarrassing. Will you take part next year aswell? Absolutely!

Champions of Friday night: the catering team of BALMUN. The boys and girls did all the food for teachers‘s reception at the Rostock townhall by themselves. Congrats!

Before... ...After

VIP party At The Town Hall By KEVIN DUSCH A very personal speech of the conf manager, great food and relaxed atmosphere: The teacher’s reception in the town hall was a total success. Photos: Koray Kocyigit

When everybody found his seat (and everybody got his champagne) Claus Lucas Letsch introducted the traditional and fabulous teacher’s reception with a small but classy harangue. Claus Lucas Letsch ended with the very emotional sentence: “This is my last

BALMUN conference as a pupil – and up to now the best one ever. “ TEACHER‘s RECEPTION AT THE TOWNHALL ROSTOCK! And then it began. Not spectacular, not in a big circle, but in the typical familiar ambience BALMUN is famous for.

But beforehand there was also much work for the catering team. With only twelve stuffies they prepared this amazing meal(s). All in all it is to say: It was familiar as always and atmospheric than ever before.

What happened there, mister

kUHLMEY?

The rapporteur of the Disarmament Committee and the lady from the press. Mr Kuhlmey, what happened there? Johannes Kuhlmey (Mister BALMUN 2011) visited The Baltic Herald for an exclusive interview. He needed to explain some things after The Herald

released an intersting photo. Johannes: “We are close friends. I‘m still single but I‘m not looking for a girl friend.“ Wouldn‘t you be happy to meet a nice girl at this year‘s BALMUN conference? Johannes Kuhlmey: “It‘s not the reason for what I‘m here. It‘s enough when everything in the committee and in the conference works.“

has no talent at all, we simply had noone else for this job. Kevin: “Well, I didn‘t it. Yet. Maybe I should do it? ;-) “
