3

Assignment 1 To develop a sense of form and space, scale and proportions, space division and to create a hierarchy in the composition Restrictions • Use black shapes only. • They need to be perpendicular to each other or to the edges. Observations • There is a flow in the composition shown by red curves. • Triangles (form) give direction when placed on the paper. • Circle gives flow. • Square equalises a space more or less. Its stable. • Small circle creates emphasis in the composition. BANSARI BORDA

2. There is a flow or a path created which the eye follows while looking at the composition.

3 1

BANSARI BORDA

1. There is a space hierarchy in the composition 1, 2 and 3.

3. Closure property is majorly acting on the composition.

EXERCISE 2 – SPACE EXPANSION •

Assignment 4 - 2D

Take a square sheet of coloured paper 125 x 125 mm and cut and fold it is so that it expands in terms of space. The objective is to achieve a composition which visually occupies an area 5-6 times (A3 size sheet) the original area. •

Assignment 5- 3D

Take a strip of paper 50 x 500mm in size . Applying the technique of cut and folds, create a 3D composition which entraps visually interesting spaces within.

EXERCISE 3 – SOLID COMPOSITIONS •

Assignment 6

Take three different small objects min 5 in nos., like bottle caps, match boxes, tetra packs, cloth pins, board clips, erasers etc. analyse the shape and form of that object and make a 3D composition on white / black background using those solids. •

Assignment 7

Group assignment . Analyse the empty space given and make a physical composition of the things provided with respect to normal human scale and a person 6 inch tall and document with photographs and orthographic views.

Assignment 8 Observation • It creates a different space feel when placed vertically or horizontally. • I have kept it vertical because it has several levels which makes it interesting to view. • the second picture is view from below. • The third one is viewed from above. • Colour black and white had to be taken care of. • White makes it look spacious while black makes the space look compressed.

Observations •

Light falling at one corner of the box.

Black provides more contrast against the light

More exposed to the light source.

White which is against the light looks grey due to shadows.

BANSARI BORDA

Planes on top and vertical drop their shadows on horizontal planes.

Explorations •

The background is covered with black tinted sheet

It decreases the brightness within the space.

Space looks compact

Whites are prominent due to high contrast.

Even though there is a background behind the cuboid the space does not look very compact like the one above.

It is because of the light which is coming through the thermocol.

The space looks bigger and brighter because of the background.

Explorations

BANSARI BORDA

Explorations with the light to see the sciography of the on the ground.

It completely changes the feel of the space.

Light makes the space more open, breathing and big.

The yellow lines show the vertical partitions created. The partitions are well balanced.

the red lines show the levels which determine the humans eye view. It makes the space look spacious and elongated.
