Editor's Note

A Higher Level of Education Leads to Lousy Vision! By Dr. Amanda Weiss, Optometrist In a study published in the journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, more than 50% of college graduates were nearsighted. This finding was in sharp contrast with the less than 25% of study participants, without a high school education, who were nearsighted. While genetics are known to play a role in vision, this study of 5000 people demonstrated a stronger correlation between environmental conditions and nearsightedness. To the point: the more reading and computer work you do, the greater the chance that you’ll be in need of glasses! While it’s unlikely that your children put down their iPad or iPhone this summer, the odds are good that the amount of reading and computer work they will do on a daily basis is about to increase as the new school year gets underway. There are some things you can do to improve comfort and minimize the impact that these tasks can have on both your vision and your child’s vision now and in the future. The Physiology of Reading: Our eyes have a built-in magnifying lens. When tiny muscles within the eye flex, they allow this magnifying lens to change shape and focus, enabling us to see fine print. The other remarkable mechanism in the eye, which allows for hours of Facebook perusing, is the pupil. The pupil is the opening to the eye, through which light passes to reach the retina, beginning the process of vision. When we read, the pupil constricts, helping to focus light at the back of the eye. Now consider for a moment the last time your teenager used his iPad for the period of an hour.

Imagine during that time instead, he had held a 10-pound weight in his right hand with his arm held at a right angle. How long do you think he would have lasted comfortably without having to relax and set the weight down? -Certainly not an hour. Considering the amount of work required of the muscles in our eyes to maintain clear focus while doing homework or completing an 8-hour workday, it’s easy to understand how we might have trouble staying focused and comfortable. The Do’s: • Do Take Breaks. Introducing the 20/20/20 Rule: Every 20 minutes, for 20 seconds, look 20 feet away. Allow the muscles in your eyes to relax. • Do Remember to Blink. It is well known that prolonged reading and computer use results in less blinking and more incomplete blinking. This affects the clarity and comfort of your vision. • Do Limit Tablet Time. Doing so may prevent or slow the progression of nearsightedness. • Do Add the Anti-Reflective Coating to Your Glasses. Anti-reflective coatings can limit the amount of high-energy light (blue light from your computer screen or fluorescent overhead lighting) that reaches the back of your eye. This impacts visual comfort, clarity, and can even impact sleep patterns! • Do remove your glasses for nearsightedness when reading. Discuss this with your doctor first, but often, in nearsighted people, reading without glasses is less stressful on the visual system and can slow the rate of prescription progression. • Do wear the proper glasses for the proper task.

This rule is particularly true for adults wearing bifocals. Often the prescription that works for everyday use is not the best prescription for long hours of computer use. Ask your doctor about computer glasses, and again DO NOT forget the anti-reflective coating! • Do ask your doctor about how a specific type of eyeglass lens or contact lens can slow the progression of your child’s nearsightedness! The Bottom Line: Encourage your child to go for the gold and get that graduate degree, but follow these simple tips to insure that the glasses he’s wearing aren’t thicker than the textbooks he’s reading! Back-to-School Brain Health for Florida Students In today's world children and students have so many social distractions and electronic stimuli that it is incredibly difficult for them to stay calm or focused on the task at hand. Simple tasks are especially trying for kids suffering from ADD & ADHD. Some school districts have started encouraging that ADD & ADHD children, who have difficulty focusing or staying in their seats, be medicated to the point that they are unnaturally meek and become virtual zombies. Several Independent Florida health food retailers in regions from Tampa, Orlando, East Coast, Boca Raton, Ft. Lauderdale, and Miami have banded together with NuAxon (the producers of NuroLight™ ) to help parents and teachers find natural alternatives for ADD & ADHD, as opposed to potentially harmful drugs like; Ritalin, Adderol, Concerta, and other prescription medications that can have extremely negative effects on the child's development; neurologically, physically to the liver and kidneys, and social maturity. My Community Pharmacy in Wellington has taken the awareness campaign to an inventive new level with creative in-store displays, and special deep discounts to insure that NuroFocus™ is both available and affordable for families of children and/or adults suffering from ADD & ADHD at the beginning of the school year. The critically extracted herbs in the patented NuroLight™ formula have been used around the world for thousands of years to promote healthy brain function, improve memory, and encourage calm focus in our daily lives. NuroFocus™ is recommended by treatment professionals for children and adults who are displaying obvious symptoms along the ADD & ADHD, Aspergers, Tourette's and other chronic cognitive ailments on the spectrum. While we all know how a disruptive child can affect other students from getting the proper attention and class time they deserve, the responsibility for the child's potentially disruptive behavior can't be laid entirely on their small shoulders. School diets, home diets, food allergies, genetics, and toxins in our environment, have all contributed to an estimated 1 in 10 American children falling somewhere along the ADD & ADHD spectrum. Back-to-School doesn't need to be a stressed out drama scene anymore, but it doesn't mean we have to turn our children into zombies either. See your caring health food store like My Community Pharmacy for alternative solutions to ADD & ADHD that are designed to complement the body's natural process and help stimulate neurological function. Nuaxon is a US production company dedicated to the use and study of herbal and nutrient blends that have health benefits for modern society. The Dreaded “Dowager’s Hump” A Unique approach to stand straighter and look better As I walk around town the one thing that breaks my heart is how many people have what is called a “Dowager’s Hump.” While you may not know it by that name I am sure you have seen it. It is the hump that forms where the neck and back meet. Most people are afraid of developing this hump due to cosmetic reasons; however what you may not know is how having that hump is affecting your health in a tremendous way. In fact, the Dowager’s Hump can be a fairly good indicator and insight into how healthy someone really is as it has already been linked with heart disease, lung conditions, and early morbidity. The great news is that the hump may be prevented and even reversed with the right approach. So why would a hump in your back create health issues? From an anatomical perspective it makes perfect sense. The nerves that exit the spine from the base of the neck and upper back are the nerves responsible for maintaining heart and lung function. So as the posture or structure in that area distorts, the function of the nerves in that area decrease, leading to dis-eased organs.

While many still argue the cause of the Dowager hump, there is a good amount of research that demonstrates that the problem originates in the upper neck. When the upper neck vertebrae move out of position, this causes the head to move forward. If the upper neck vertebrae are not put back into position, the head will literally begin to collapse forward and into the body. As the years go by with the problem uncorrected, the dowagers hump begins to appear and grow to a larger and larger size. While there are some exercises that can help improve posture, correcting the Upper Cervical Spine can completely stop and even sometimes reverse the hump in the spine. Many people begin to notice a Dowager’s Hump while in their 20’s or 30’s. While every chiropractor is trained in adjusting the upper neck, there are a few who devote their entire practice to specifically adjusting these vertebrae. I wholeheartedly recommend seeing an “Upper Cervical Chiropractor “ as soon as you notice this hump start to form. I have been blessed enough to have helped many with this problem with astounding results, and I wish the same for you! Dr. Kevin Davine is an Upper Cervical Chiropractor located in Boynton Beach, FL. Why Choose Palm Beach Children’s Hospital? When it comes to your child’s health, Palm Beach Children’s Hospital at St. Mary’s Medical Center is soaring to new heights! When your child requires a high level of care, a dedicated children’s hospital can help ensure your child’s needs are met, quickly. Palm Beach Children’s Hospital, the only pediatric hospital in the Palm Beaches and the Treasure Coast, offers a full range of pediatric care from emergencies to specialty services and complex surgical care.

Understands children’s unique health needs Children and adults are different and so are their health care needs. That is why a children’s hospital like Palm Beach Children’s Hospital, which is staffed by doctors, nurses and other health care providers who specialize in children, can make all the difference. “Our pediatric team recognizes that children are not just small adults,” said Davide Carbone, CEO of Palm Beach Children’s Hospital and St. Mary’s Medical Center. “Our staff is committed to providing exceptional care specific to pediatrics.” Understanding the impact of growth and development in children and the way they respond to treatment at different stages is critical to ensuring the best possible outcomes for medical treatment. Staffed by pediatric experts Many illnesses affecting children are rarely seen in adults, and common conditions in adults may manifest themselves differently in children. SEIZURES I always get asked: “WHY DID YOU BECOME A CHIROPRACTOR?” So let’s get personal… When I was 11 years old I was in gymnastics. One day at practice I was performing a back tuck on the beam. I stepped wrong and landed on my head, which lead to a decent concussion. Within the next couple months I started developing neurological symptoms such as fainting, zoning out, and minor eye twitches. My parents grew very concerned and the testing began….. I should mention both of my amazing parents are chiropractors. They took me to the best neurologist in South Florida. After MRIs, CTScans, and 24 hour EEGs, the conclusion was that I was having epileptic seizures. What? EPILEPSY at 11 years old? So, here we go again back to the doctor to figure out what to do next. There was really one solution given to us at the time. I would have to take a medication EVERY day to act as a nervous system inhibitor and if I was having a bad seizure there was an injection that could be administered. So being chiropractors they decided to fill the prescription just in case but choose to try an alternative form of healing. They did not want my body becoming accustomed to these drugs. The basic thought was “if trauma caused this, let’s reverse the trauma and let the body heal”. Through chiropractic analysis of structure and function they formulated a plan. I received regular specific chiropractic care and cranial/cervical release massage therapy while also maintaining my healthy eating and safe physical activities. Within 2 months I had NO symptoms and the 24 hour EEG which previously had significant findings had NO findings and was reported to be within normal limits. Subsequent testing also showed no findings. I was back! Now looking back I am so grateful that I had these parents who were able to make an alternative plan for me. The whole premise behind chiropractic is to allow the nervous system to work at its best function. Which will allow everything the nervous system controls (everything in your body) to work at its best function. So even though I have many reasons for why I choose this profession, that was a glimpse at one of my personal testimonies. I’m so blessed to be in this career where changing and improving people’s lives is a daily occurrence for me. The majority of the time people can see a major difference within 1-2 appointments, whether it’s pain, asthma, sports performance, focusing, etc. At the Weiss Family Chiropractic Center we truly pride ourselves on our patient care and patient success. We make individual treatments for every patient depending on their goals, needs, and physical demands. Not everyone is the same. Traumas and new signs/symptoms should always be evaluated by a medical health care professional. Independent Imaging, the Best in Early Detection Advances in early breast cancer detection have come a long way in the past ten years, as the doctors at Independent Imaging will tell you. Dr. Eric Baumel, Dr. Jonathan Huber and Dr. Thomas Kirchner gather around the computer monitor to demonstrate the amazing detail in “breast tomosynthesis,” also known as 3D mammography.

Dr. Thomas Kirchner, Dr. Eric Baumel and Dr. Jonathan Huber of Independent Imaging

Independent Imaging, located in Palomino Park in Wellington with three other locations, is the only site in the Western Communities offering this level of state-ofthe-art radiology, including the tomosynthesis. This is considered “the best of the best” in the industry. “Anything that can help us…and prevent a patient from coming back for additional visits, giving us higher level of confidence with the results is a very good thing,” says Dr. Kirchner, referring to their state-of-the-art technology. “The breast tomosynthesis and 3D mammography,” explains Dr. Huber, “is the only technical advance in decades in this field.” You can clearly see it on their faces – they are excited about this technology, which puts us light years ahead of yesterday’s methods of detection. “We catch early cancers all the time,” says Dr. Baumel. “And that’s the most rewarding part – when we can help patients find out exactly what’s wrong.” Dr. Baumel outlines the challenges of radiology with today’s patients. “When you talk about the key to good radiology, it’s basically a ‘Where’s Waldo?’ It’s all about finding the abnormality and putting it in the context of the patient.” This includes knowing the patient’s history, any past or present conditions and understanding the whole context. The three doctors are well-respected in our Wellington area medical community and have all originally worked in the local hospitals. Each doctor has been working in the field of radiology for approximately twenty years, bringing a wealth of expertise to their patients. Dr. Kirchner explains that this helps in two ways – first, it makes the local doctors more likely to call upon them and second, it is a great help that the doctors at Independent Imaging know exactly what is needed (and sometimes needed quickly) for doctor’s offices and patients. CEO of Independent Imaging Dr. Daniel Ghiragossian is proud of the excellent care, beautiful facility and successful results that Independent Imaging brings to patients every day. “The caring quality of our staff is infused in all of them from day one. If you treat everyone like you would treat your grandmother, you cannot go wrong.” He constantly reminds his staff that when a patient is coming in for testing, he or she is probably nervous about it. As they refer to him at Independent Imaging, “Dr. G” stresses that each staff member needs to have “the most respect for their patient’s condition” every time. “There is nothing that we won’t do to make sure that the patient is comfortable,” explains Dr. G. If the technologist shows appreciation for the patients and what they are going through, they are able to get the testing done and work with the anxiety at hand, he says. Also, keeping the process quick and efficient is also a great help to the potentially anxious patient. “Customer service is the core of what we do here,” says Staci Martin, Marketing & Development Manager for Independent Imaging.” From the person who greets patients at the front desk to the technician who reads the data, they are ambassadors of good service for Independent Imaging. Independent Imaging locations are in Wellington, in Lake Worth (near the JFK hospital), in Palm Beach Gardens and in Belle Glade.

Mommy Moments

I never thought the day would come…when we would have to send my precious baby boy to school. He’s been signed up since January and ever since, the anxiety has been weighing in pretty heavily. Two years ago, when my husband and I decided it would make more sense for me to stay home and raise our peanut, we figured it would be a piece of cake helping him to transition into a daily school routine and become apart of society. We know he’s ready to spread his social wings and get out and learn. However, I can’t help but ask so many questions I’m sure many of you moms have asked before. Will he understand? Will he have a good time? Will bullying be a problem? How will the teachers know what makes him smile? As parents, whenever the summer comes to an end and the school year rolls around, we each have a different set of questions on our mind. Whether you are sending your child to a new school and they are forced to make news friends to fit in. Or they are making the transition into adulthood as Freshmen in high school…we’ve all been there. These experiences are all a part of life. So, how exactly do you make going back to school a little less stressful? Perhaps the school has an orientation or open house where you can go and meet the teachers ahead of time. You may even meet some new parents or students to ride the new school year wave with. Why not try and make the back to school process a fun one! Gear up on some brand new outfits, school supplies and books. I always remember being excited to wear my new

Banzaiwellnessmag.com

clothes and write in a fresh notebook at the start of the year. Ease into the transition. Maybe it’s setting your alarm clock and going through the morning routine, so that the entire household isn’t rocked come game time. Speaking of change, my son and I have been going through a school transition program. Every time I tell other moms about it, they either look at me and get it or look at me like I’m nuts! We’ve been attending a mommy and me program since he was 3 months old. Initially, it was a great way for us to meet people and we’ve made some amazing friends along the way. Now the whole idea has become bigger than us. I’m pretty partial to my most amazing teachers, because I try to practice everything they preach and the lessons we’ve learned have exceeded my expectations. It’s a chance for both of us to get used to not being with one another every minute of the day. I patiently wait outside of the classroom for about an hour, while little man explores and finds his place. Of course this doesn’t come without tears and struggle, but ultimately we are both better for it. Although we will be attending a new school with new people and a longer schedule come fall, I’m confident my little mister will have all the tools he needs, thanks to this practice. I’m very thankful to have been apart of the program and couldn’t have completed it without the support of my husband and family. So no matter what sort of hurdles you and your family are about to cross come the new school year, just remember you’ll make it to the finish line with a little bit of patience!

Back To School Safety By Dr. Randall Laurich As a chiropractor we see many children with spinal injuries, some from sports, some from bad posture and some from using the wrong or too heavy of a backpack. Please do not hesitate to have your child’s spine check by a chiropractor. It’s the inability to check spinal health today that can cause the same problems that most people have later in life. Please do not hesitate to contact our office for a backpack safety check. Please see the checklist below from The American Chiropractic Association website for more options. ACA's Backpack Safety Checklist One of the fundamental pieces of any back to school ensemble is, of course, the backpack. Although they’re practical, backpacks are a leading cause of back and shoulder pain for millions of children and adolescents. As students head back to school, the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) offers parents advice on preventing unnecessary backpack pain and injuries. The ACA offers the following checklist to help parents select the best possible backpack for their children: Is the backpack the correct size for your child? The backpack should never be wider or longer than your child’s torso, and the pack should not hang more than 4 inches below the waistline. A backpack that hangs too low increases the weight on the shoulders, causing your child to lean forward when walking. • Does the backpack have two wide, padded shoulder straps? Non-padded straps are not only uncomfortable, but also they can place unnecessary pressure on the neck and shoulder muscles. • Does your child use both straps? Lugging a heavy backpack by one strap can cause a disproportionate shift of weight to one side, leading to neck and muscle spasms, low-back pain, and poor posture. • Are the shoulder straps adjustable? The shoulder straps should be adjustable so the backpack can be fitted to your child’s body. The backpack should be evenly centered in the middle of your child's back. • Does the backpack have a padded back? A padded back not only provides increased comfort, but also protects your child from being poked by sharp edges on school supplies (pencils, rulers, notebooks, etc.) inside the pack. • Does the pack have several compartments? A backpack with individualized compartments helps position the contents most effectively. Make sure that pointy or bulky objects are packed away from the area that will rest on your child's back, and try to place the heaviest items closet to the body. • The ACA recommends that parents or guardians help children pack their backpacks properly, and they should make sure children never carry more than 10 percent of their body weight. For example, a child who weighs 100 pounds shouldn’t carry a backpack heavier than 10 pounds, and a 50-pound child shouldn’t carry more than 5 pounds. In addition, parents should ask their children to report any pain or other problems resulting from carrying a backpack. If the pain is severe or persistent, seek care from a doctor of chiropractic or other health care professional.
