welcome

Another beautiful fall season in Telluride sets the stage for our 5th Annual Cars & Colors Festival. On behalf of Christine our Director and partner, Rob & Sindy Lindow our partners, our staff and ambassadors across America, Anita and I welcome you to our community. This year we are proud to introduce to you the newest addition to our Festival; the highest elevation aviation event on earth with the Flying Shetterly Squadron and Tom Larkin’s Mini Jet acrobatic act. Saturday’s Hangar 29 evening guest speaker is Gary Patterson of Shelby American. Gary will be taking us on an automotive journey featuring Carroll Shelby and his road through automotive history. Other exciting perennial events for 2019 include the Million Dollar Highway Road Rally, the Medallion Hunt, photo contests, historic tours, Cool Cars on Colorado, two different Concours events and, of course, the wonderful views surrounding the towns of Telluride and Mountain Village. All of this is only a fraction of what our show has to offer in 2019. Refer to this pocket sized, and fun filled, program for all of the scheduled events that Cars & Colors has assembled for you during this festival weekend. Anita and I would like to thank Christine Gamage for all of her hard work and dedication to making your weekend experience here in Telluride special. Thank you for your attendance and continued support of the Telluride Festival of Cars & Colors. Sincerely, Ray & Anita Cody, Festival Founders and the Cars & Colors Crew 5

“Please slow down ..

The story of the Cars &

When Telluride Festival of Cars & Colors Founder, Ray Cody, was offered a pre-sale purchase of any car in the Tammy Allen Car Collection Museum, he chose a signed 1999 Carroll Shelby Series 1. Cody recalls when he first saw the Series 1, “As I walked through the museum I came across a car I had never seen before. It was silver and maroon. It looked like a combination of a Ferrari, a Corvette and a Cobra. It only had 5,800 original miles on the ticker. This was a rare car I wanted to add to my collection.” Indeed the Car was rare; it was the failed project of Shelby in 1999.The Shelby Series 1 has an aluminum custom chassis with a carbon fiber body that was to be the next generation of the Cobra. 249 cars were produced and 80 of those cars were supercharged. Cody owns production car #192 and it is one of the 80 supercharged versions. Researching the history of the car, Cody found a book called Snake Bit, by author Eric Davison. Originally published in 2004, the book told the story of Shelby’s desire to build a 2400 lb sports car dressed in carbon fiber that would be billed as the fastest road car in the world. The Series 1 was to be the most highly anticipated road 36

and track car in living memory. After reading Snake Bit, Cody came away knowing that the project was plagued from the onset; Production delays, supplier relationships gone badly and the biggest obstacle of all, government regulations mandated to the Auto Industry were the death of the project. In 2016, Cody’s Shelby Series 1 #192 was the cover photo of the Telluride Festival of Cars & Colors program. On the Monday morning after the 2016 festival had ended, the winds came through the Telluride region with a vengeance. In one 3 hour storm, every leaf on almost every tree was laid on the ground. The festival team was making final cleanup inspections, checking out venues and loading cars for deliveries to return to their owners. When Cody rolled down a steep incline in the Series 1 on the way back to put the car in storage, the car slid on the leaves and rolled into a tree. “It was like a slow motion bad dream” said Cody. “I rolled into that tree at maybe 7 or 10 mph and just listened to the carbon fiber front end come apart. When insurance wanted to send the car to the Joe Schmo Body Shop,” Cody went on, “I knew there was only one 37 >>>

company that was going to work on my car and that was the manufacturer.” The car was shipped off to Shelby American in Las Vegas to for repairs. One day Cody called to check on the status of the car’s repairs. He asked the receptionist, “Is anyone that was involved in the Series 1 project still with the company?” The receptionist replied, “Gary Patterson was involved in that project; let me see if he is available.” Cody remembered reading about Patterson and realized he would be speaking to the test car driver referred to many times in Snake Bit. “This is Gary, how can I help?” said the voice on the phone. This was the beginning of many phone conversations between Patterson and Cody. After several calls throughout the year about progress of the car repair, Ray realized Gary Patterson, the Shelby test driver, was now Gary Patterson, President of Shelby American. “He always took my call and would go above and beyond. I appreciated his personal approach to me as his client.” Gary would share stories about the Series 1 that gave Ray great insight about the history of his car. He talked about his days of leaving Ferraris in the dust while driving the Series 1 on the track. “Gary provided me with copies of the original filed paperwork with the car, anything he had he provided copies to me.” 38

Over the last 3 years the two would cross paths at SEMA, Denver Shelby Museum and Barrett Jackson. When in Las Vegas with friends, Ray would stop in at the Shelby Museum to share his new love of the Shelby brand. In March 2019, while attending the annual Shelby bash in Las Vegas, Gary took Ray in a Shelby 350R for his first ever ride at a race track with a real race car driver in the left seat. “It was the single most exhilarating automotive thing I have ever done in my life. When approaching the first corner at 120 mph, I was tapping Gary on the shoulder asking him to slow down, please slow down, this is fast enough.” After that first lap, Cody had settled in and thoroughly enjoyed the track day experience. Cody said, “I was amazed at the fact that we were approaching turns at these speeds and the car felt like a go cart with glue on the tires. It was a testament to the engineering of the car.” Ray was convinced that day, he was an even bigger fan of the new Shelby lineup. Gary Patterson will be the guest speaker during the Hangar 29 Saturday evening event at the Telluride Airport. Many great vintage, historic and newer Shelbys will be on display in Hangar 29 throughout Saturday, 10am - 4pm and during the Hangar 29 Evening Event 6pm – 9pm (see page 20 for details). 39

in memoriam

Jeff Jurecki OCT. 29, 1971 – SEPT. 23, 2018

Before the start of the Cars & Colors Festival in 2015, I wasn’t well acquainted with our friend Jeff. I was unaware of the genuine, positive impact he had on the lives of all the people in his orbit and the contributions he made to our community. His genuine enthusiasm for life and for people drew me in immediately, as I’m sure happened to everyone in his world. With a hand on my shoulder and an assertion that “things are going great,” Jeff helped me through that first, chaotic year of the Cars & Colors Festival, even as he was sprinting off to help a car owner whose battery had ‘fallen out’ of his car in the middle of Mountain Village Blvd. Jeff was a constant ambassador for our event. He would often call me throughout the year and start with “Hey, I met this guy and he has this car…”Whether it was at his establishment,Tracks Café & Bar in Mountain Village, or speeding through the Baja, Jeff made friends everywhere he went. Jeff was a reflection of all the great human connections in life; a dedicated husband and father and the friend that was truly invested in making sure your day was going okay. He was quick to ask you how things were going and he was honestly interested in the answer. His presence in our community, at our festival and in our lives, is truly and heartbreakingly missed; yet ever present. –Chris 44

It was this time last year when the festival lost a great friend and supporter. Jeff was a guy who loved his wife, loved his girls and loved all things with motors and wheels. I was introduced to Jeff after I proposed Cars & Colors to Mountain Village town council members in 2015. From that meeting on we became best of friends, sharing car stories and one upping each other on cars and owners we met on our travels. Looking back I realize how much he and Erica had been part of the Cars and Colors family. I miss my buddy, but will never forget the impact he had on the startup of the Telluride Festival of Cars & Colors. We are all better people for knowing Jeff Jurecki. –Ray My most distinctive recollection of Jeff was his ear to ear smile. During the first years of Telluride Festival of Cars and Colors, he would always come up to us and ask, “What can I do to help you out? Are you hungry or thirsty? Let me get you something. What kind of beer do you drink?” As the owner of Tracks with his wife Erica, he always made sure you had something to eat or drink. He was one of the festival’s biggest fans. He was always promoting the event through his many friends in the auto industry. After trips from the Baja races or visiting the Hendrix compound in North Carolina, he would be so excited to relay his experiences and mention that he promoted the festival and it would be great if they could come to our event. He loved the world of automobiles! One of my many recollections of Jeff and Cars & Colors was the first year in 2015. It was a beautiful fall day. All of us were running around trying to get cars to all the different venues. As Jeff would always say, “What can I do to help?” I said, “Let’s take the Ferrari 612 Scagletti to the airport as I need to get my 1983 Toyota truck and you can drive the Ferrari back to Mountain Village.” He was excited to ride in the car. On the way up airport road, we heard a ‘thump, thump, thump’. We got out and looked under the chassis, but didn’t see anything. We continued on down the road and heard “thump, thump, thump”. Once we got to the airport we really examined the situation and realized that the rear tires had been shredded and showing metal threads. Most likely by some excited driver that Ray let drive the car that summer. We parked the car and the 1983 Toyota was the “cool” ride for Jeff. Jeff‘s spirit will always be present at Cars and Colors. As for me, I will remember his smile. God Speed Jeff. –Anita 45
