Welcome from the Festival Founders n behalf of ourselves and our partners, Rob & Sindy Lindow and Christine Gamage, we want to thank you for coming to Telluride and Mountain Village for our inaugural festival. Eight years ago Anita and I hosted a group of local car guys to talk about doing a Saturday car show in Telluride. After attending the inaugural Rocky Mountain Concours D’Elegance at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, that vision changed. What we found was a world-class event hosted by Founders Dan Kane and Rondi Stratton. The following year the event was one of the finest automobile and motorcycle shows in the country, but in that same year, our country took one of its most devastating financial hits in the stock market and real estate in modern times. Unfortunately for car guys and gals the Rocky Mountain Concours D’Elegance was not feasible in year three. Fast-forwarding to 2013, we met Dan and Rondi and invited them to come to Telluride. Our goal was to get their advice on the Festival we planned to put together here in Telluride, to ask them what, in retrospect, they would do different and what pitfalls we might possibly avoid. That meeting kicked off our Car Festival journey, not that we haven’t been met with a few bumps and roadblocks, but their initial guidance has been an invaluable roadmap that has led us to where we are today. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you to Dan and Rondi. We can’t say that enough considering this event is as much of a tribute to you as it is to our love of cars and the community we live in. Today we are at a different time and a different place economically. And, we as a Festival have, for the first time in history, an opportunity to bring together the Kennedy Car story with the generous assistance from Tammy Allen of Grand Junction, CO and Stephen Tebo of Boulder, CO. Tammy had purchased the ambulance that reportedly carried JFK to Bethesda Naval Hospital in 1963. Steven Tebo had acquired the hearse Cadillac that carried JFK from Park Memorial Hospital to Air Force One at Dallas’ Love Field. Stephen also had acquired the Jaguar that Jackie Kennedy owned. These three cars are graciously on loan from The Allen Unique Autos Museum and the Collection of Stephen Tebo. Telluride has many local heroes some of which we have recently lost. Both General Norman Schwarzkopf and astronaut Neil Armstrong were second-home owners in Telluride and regulars to our small community. There’s another guy here, you may have never heard his name, his job was to be unknown, to fit in. His name is Jerry O’Rourke and he grew up here in Telluride. Even today he may be found at Sunday mass at Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church or giving historic tours of our community. You may even find him talking to high school students about his past. You see, Jerry has a story to tell, he was JFK’s secret service agent and he will talk to

you on Saturday, September 26 at 7 PM at the Telluride Regional Airport evening event. Also, look forward to an inspiring story that will lift your spirit and make you proud to be an American. It’s the story of Lt. Col. James Harvey III, born in July of 1923. His story will both amaze and inspire you. It’s the story of the Tuskegee Airmen. These brave men were sent into battle as black airmen representing the United States of America. The mission was impossible, the sacrifice was personal. They would be remembered as the most skilled and feared airman that Hitler’s German pilots would ever face. These brave Americans fought racism by proving that we are all God’s children and share common goals in love of family and love of country. Need a dose of American pride? This presentation by Colonel Harvey himself is not to be missed. Speaking of American icons, did I mention Babe Ruth’s 1948 Lincoln was here? It’s parked by Sonny and Cher’s matching 1966 mustangs created by Hollywood car designer George Barris. These cars can be found alongside rare American Muscle and Classic Cars at the Lawson Hill Ball Field. Do you like airplanes? Cessna brought the new Citation Sovereign and Beechcraft King Air 350i from Wichita Kansas and Textron Aviation. When we asked longtime friend, Senior Vice President of Textron Aviation, Jim Walters from Wichita to attend, he didn’t hesitate. Jim and Ray are longtime ice hockey teammates who play geezer hockey and have been elbowing each other for years in rec leagues. Jim’s a Canadian and Ray grew up on the frozen ponds of Chicago. Being from Wichita before moving to Telluride, they are partial to the Beechcraft brand quality and choose a Bonanza A36 as their personal aircraft. The Festival would like to welcome the entire staff and pilots who made the trip and to say thank you, but “we’re not in Kansas anymore”. The Cars & Colors Road Rally, Medallion Hunt and Photo Contest are all events geared towards the entire family; we also have car themed movies running for attendees at the Cars & Colors Theater. Many great outdoor adventures also await your within this great region. Meet us at the Morning Rev to start your day at the Peaks Resort Hotel for announcements and for your daily Medallion Hunt Clue. And don’t miss visiting our great restaurants and retailers while you’re here at the Festival. In closing, it’s been a two year automotive journey and we have made some wonderful friends along the way. We are excited, at last, to present this Festival to you and invite you to enjoy the beauty of our mountain town and, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you for being a part of our inaugural event. Thanks and Gratitude here have been so many people who have approached us and expressed to us what a great world-class car event we have created. Let’s set the record straight, we did not create this event alone, this was a team of people that we hand selected knowing we had neither the time nor the skills to make our vision a reality on our own. So please join us in thanking them and if you enjoyed any, or all, of the event please let them know. Our local high school age event ambassadors Peter, Julian and Michael; these boys show up eager to volunteer and help at any of our sponsored events. A great representation of the youth in our community, your parents have raised fine young men and we are equally as proud of you as they are. To our logistics team, Tom, Brett, Greg, Kyle and Ben, you are the daily support on all of our fronts. You are the reason we are known for getting things done. You know it, we know it, and we want everybody to know it. To our partners Rob and Sindy Lindow; our childhood fantasies have been realized. We always wanted to be around the coolest cars on the planet as kids growing up in Chicago. Well, we made it. Thanks for your help, your friendship and your love. We would not be doing this event if it were not for the Town of Mountain Village and the Town of Telluride. Dan Jansen and his staff in Mountain Village were so proactive in helping us shape this event that they deserve much of the praise for what you see in this world class ski resort village. Thank you, it has been our pleasure to work with such talented creative people. Thank you to Mayor Stu Fraser, the Telluride Town Council, and CCASSE® for approving and supporting our event and for allowing us to showcase our beautiful historic town of Telluride. We thank our merchants, hotels and restaurants for stocking up and hanging in there for one more week. Thank you to the Telluride Mountain Village Owners Association for your generous Stimulus Grant and to Tel Ski for your gracious offer of use for our various Festival venues. Thank you to our sponsors, for believing in the potential of this Festival and supporting the inaugural 2015 Telluride Festival of Cars and Colors. To both Mikes, you know who you are.You have become great friends and helped us see our vision to fruition. Your input has been invaluable, your support has been appreciated and your friendship is forever treasured. Thank you to our festival operations manager CJ Hodge. You jumped in with both feet and took the bull by the horns. You have a great future in our organization young man, thank you for all of your hard work.

Car enthusiasts have a culture all of their own and this festival would not be the success it is without the tireless work of those most closely tied into that culture. Helping spread the word and making connections between the Festival and some of the areas greatest cars and car owners, we would also like to thank our amazing Founding Members. Make sure to read their bios included in this event program guide. Volunteers are a key component of any festival and we have been fortunate enough to have friends, family and neighbors offer up their time and talents to make a valuable and positive impact on the experience of our festival attendees. Our sincerest thanks to all of you.

Last, but most importantly, to the person who is responsible for every detail, of every event, of every day for every ticket holder and every car owner and every vendor and............... Most would need a nap just thinking about what she does in a day. This event is her crowning jewel. Thank you to our Festival Director Christine Gamage. Prior to assuming her role as Festival Director for the Telluride Festival of Cars and Colors, Christine was a banker here in Telluride. Both Anita and I noticed when visiting her office that she had the most organized desk either of us had ever seen. Her files were color coded and her pens were always in order. It was a mutual decision on our part to try to recruit her for our team. Her dedication was immediately obvious and after a few short months we asked Chris to be our partner. We both agree today that it was one of the best business decisions we have ever made. Chris is very sweet, very humble and very determined, she has been a blessing in our lives and she has made this event effortless on our parts. Thank you Chris, enjoy your festival! a History of Telluride COURTESY OF THE TELLURIDE HISTORICAL MUSEUM

riginally the summer hunting grounds of the Ute Indians, the Telluride area first saw prospectors from the east over the old Indian trail now known as Ophir Pass in the early 1880s. John Fallon, one of those early prospectors, is thought to have been the first to explore what is now known as Marshall Basin. Such mines as the Sheridan, Mendota, Pandora and Smuggler were opened in Marshall Basin and produced much wealth in the form of gold and other minerals. (Silver, lead, copper and zinc were mined locally as well as vanadium.) In the 1870s, Frank P. Brown was a wellknown resident of San Miguel City, a small settlement about a mile and a half west of today’s Telluride. The ruins of the Brown homestead still exist on the road into town. At one time, the post office, school, a saloon, livery stable, shops, lodging, an eating house and a half mile race track were located near there. The town of Columbia (which later became Telluride on June 4th, 1887), developed east of San Miguel City, as part of Ouray County. The town site of Columbia was plated and incorporated on February 23, 1878 with some lots selling at $3.50 each. San Miguel County was created in 1883 with Columbia as the county seat. The present Court House was built in late 1887, and has been in use since then. The first financial institution in Telluride was the San Miguel Valley Bank which suffered a midday robbery committed by Butch Cassidy on June 24, 1889. No arrests were ever made in connection with the robbery 8

which is said to have netted Cassidy $20,000. Limited transportation and power affected the expansion of local mining since only the very highest quality of ores could be profitably mined and transported significant distances. In 1887, a railroad had been built from Montrose to the old town of Dallas, a few miles north of the present town of Ridgway. Otto Mears, a Russian born entrepreneur and road-builder, set out to build a railroad from a point in the Uncompahgre Valley over Dallas Divide to Rico and on to Durango. A branch line of the Rio Grande Southern was built into Telluride in 1891 from Vance Junction on the South Fork of the San Miguel River. The next great boost to mining came when L.L. Nunn acquired an interest in the Gold King Mine near Alta. The increasing costs of coal to provide power to the mine, and the inadequacy of DC electricity to cover long distances drove Nunn and his engineer brother, Paul N. Nunn, to address the power problem. Using Trout Lake for water storage and with the aid of long flumes, they were able to provide a high pressure water source to the power plant at Ames proving the vision of Nikola Tesla’s AC current to be superior to the existing DC theories of Thomas Edison. 1898 and 1899 saw a building boom in the form of many new homes and businesses. However, in 1901, the local miners revolted and called a strike to protest the fathom system, and to reduce the workday to an eight hour day. Before it was over, the Superintendant of the Smuggler Union Mine was killed by a shotgun fired through a window in his

home in Pandora, a miner by the name of John Barthell, was killed when he shouted an innocent phrase in Finnish, and the National Guard was deployed by Governor Peabody to keep order in the mining camp. Denied medical care, the Western Federation of Miners built their own hospital in 1902, on the NW corner of Pine Street and Columbia Avenue. Prior to the construction of tramways, it has been said that as many as 5,000 animals conveyed supplies and men and ore between the mines and the town. During its time, Telluride has also seen its share of disasters, fires, floods, epidemics and snow slides. In answer to the demands of hard rock mining, the town once supported 26 saloons, four dance halls and numerous bordellos. The Red Light District is apparent today in the cribs of Popcorn Alley on Pacific Street. In 1972 the ski resort opened and in 1974 the first musical festival began in the form of Bluegrass which celebrated its 41st anniversary in 2015. Other festivals fill summer weekends with activities as diverse as The Mushroom Festival, the Telluride Film Festival, Blues & Brews and the Nothing Festival. Telluride boasts a vibrant Arts Community as well, offering virtually any media imaginable and high caliber theatrical, athletic and scientific programs. For additional information, visit the Telluride Historical Museum at the top of Fir Street. Call 970 728-3344 or visit www.telluridemuseum.org.

Dear Festival Attendees, As the Mayor of Telluride, I would like to welcome you to our beautiful, historic town.Telluride is known as the Festival Capital of the Rockies. My family and I have enjoyed living in this region for over 25 years. As the mayor for the last 8 years I have witnessed many new world-class festivals, as well as the growth of existing festivals. I am exceedingly proud to have our community involved in our newest festival, Cars & Colors. Ray Cody and his organization have worked very hard to put this festival on the map and we are totally supportive of his efforts. I know you will enjoy all that our community has to offer and want to personally thank you for making the trip to our own slice of heaven ... Telluride, Colorado. It is our hope that you will return to this magnificent center of the San Juan Mountains. Yours truly, Stuart Fraser Mayor of Telluride

Welcome to the mountains! We couldn’t be more delighted that you are here to be a part of the Telluride Festival of Cars & Colors premiering in Mountain Village and Telluride this weekend. I can assure you the red carpet has been rolled out as Festival Director Ray Cody, and his well-oiled machine of a team, turns this freshman festival into a not-to-be-missed event.

History of Mountain Village COURTESY OF THE TOWN OF MOUNTAIN VILLAGE

he Town of Mountain Village has come a long way from its days as a sheep ranch to being named one of the world’s top resort destinations. In 1968, entrepreneur Joe Zoline began to assemble the land needed to build a world class ski resort including Gorrono Ranch and Adams Ranch. With the purchase of the land, he then convinced the Town of Telluride and the United States Forest Service of his choice for the location of an “official winter sports site” in the present Mountain Village. Enlisting the expertise of former French world champion skier Emile Allais, Zoline planned to develop the ski resort in stages. In 1972, the first of the lifts and ski runs opened. In 1978, Ron Allred and Jim Wells purchased the Telluride Ski Resort from Zoline. Allred and Wells set out to create a pedes10

trian-friendly, European-style resort village above the Town of Telluride on 3.5 square miles of land that was then sheep ranches. Their vision included a commercial center that is known today as Mountain Village Center (or to some, Village Core), singlefamily estates dispersed carefully within the natural landscape, and a meandering network of winter and summer trails, walking paths, and golf fairways throughout. Their original vision also included housing for the local workforce and civic amenities to support a small, but thriving, year-round community. San Miguel County approved the Mountain Village Planned Unit Development December 22, 1981. The Town of Mountain Village was incorporated in 1995 and has developed into a world-class resort community.

To kick things off right, this jam packed weekend is happening during one of the most beautiful times in the mountains with the Fall foliage peeking out against the mountain backdrop. To add to this beauty, rare cars that inspire anyone, not just car enthusiasts, to stand in awe, will be showcased in both the towns of Mountain Village and Telluride, Lawson Hill and at the Telluride Regional Airport. In Mountain Village alone, take some time to test drive a Tesla as part of the Tesla Drive Experience; have a seat at the Telluride Conference Center’s “Cars & Colors Theater” to watch car-themed movies; and definitely make a point to attend “Hot Cars in High Places” which entails touring beautiful Mountain Village homes with the bestof-the-best cars peppering the driveways. As for myself, I can’t think of a better place to take a relaxing or exhilarating drive though such beautiful scenery, which is something I often do in my own semi-classic convertible. I hope to see you on the roads or in the Village this weekend! Again, welcome, and please enjoy every minute of your stay. Dan Jansen Mountain Village Mayor

the

inaugural

Telluride Festival of Cars and Colors a new Colorado tradition BY KAI BIDELL

he carnal roar of eight cylinders, the rush of driving a million dollar sports car, the shock of doing zero-to-sixty in 2.5 seconds in a Porsche 918. What more could a car guy like me want? One thing all car guys recognize is a good car is nothing without a good road on which to drive. Not a road devoid of potholes, but a road where the scenery takes your breath away almost as much as the car does. So where can automotive enthusiasts in Colorado go to enjoy world class, concourse level cars in a place where natural beauty augments the manmade beauty of the cars? The Inaugural Telluride Festival of Cars and Colors is the best place to start. The town of Telluride Colorado will play host this fall to over 200 cars ranging from modern exotic cars to high-end restorations, and all original vintages. Set against the backdrop of the San Juan Mountains, from September 24th through the 27th, we will see the beauty of Telluride amplified by the changing foliage, thus the name of the event: Cars and Colors. Cars and Colors aims to be “the Pebble Beach of Colorado,” says Mr. Ray Cody 12

founder of the event. The Pebble Beach Concourse d’Elegance is one of the most prestigious car shows in the world, and until now Colorado had no event that could rival it. In order to do so, Mr. Cody has been traveling the US, going to different car shows including Pebble Beach, making arrangements to host many of those same cars here, along with some unique automobiles only for Cars and Colors attendees. The Kennedy Cars Exhibit will be a prime example of the kind of unique automobiles on show at Cars and Colors. It will include the hearse that carried JFK to Air Force One from Parkland Memorial Hospital, the ambulance that reportedly transported JFK from Andrews Air Force Base to Bethesda Naval Hospital, as well as one of Jackie Kennedy’s 1957 Jaguars. A former Secret Service agent who attended to JFK his final day in Dallas will speak to the crowd on Saturday evening. One staging area will be the Historic Down Town Telluride area where Main Street will be shut down for three days, just for this festival. At the Telluride Regional

Airport there will be a smattering of different types of aircraft to accompany the cars including some vintage warplanes. There will be over 16 events held over the course of the four-day festival. Some of the highlights will be a showing of cars owned by or related to celebrities like the 1967 VW Beetle featured in Herbie the Love Bug and the 1966 Sonny and Cher Mustangs. Another highlight, the Tesla Drive Experience, allows attendees to schedule a 15 minute test drive in a Model S, which can be done ahead of time on the Cars and Colors website. According to Mr. Cody, “you will need all four days if you really want to see everything.” Buying a four-day pass will also give you accesses to more events than just a one-day pass would. One benefit of the four-day pass will be multiple opportunities to win $5,000 cash prizes, ranging from a medallion hunt, to a competition for the best picture of your car set against the scenery. If you come to play, this may be one vacation that you simply can’t afford to miss.

Everything in Life Is About Attitude ames H. Harvey III, was born in Montclair, New Jersey on July 13, 1923 to James and Cornelia Harvey. He has often been asked why he wanted to fly. “I was at home one day and a flight of four P-40 aircraft flew over and I said, “I would like to do that one day,” so I tried to enlist in the Army Air Corp. and was told they were not taking enlistments at that time. I knew that was wrong, because the Military always needed more people. They didn’t want me because of the color of my skin.” He was drafted into the Army in April 1943 and boarded a train in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania bound for Fort Meade, Maryland. “When I arrived in Washington, DC I was taken out of the passenger car I was riding in and transferred to the last car where Negroes had to ride. This was my introduction to prejudice and discrimination.” He was assigned to the Army Air Corp. Not for Pilot Training, but to the Army Air Corp. Engineers. Undaunted, he applied again for Cadet Training in the Army Air Corp.. He was accepted and passed his written test and physical examina-

16

tion with flying colors. “There were ten of us taking the examination, nine Whites and myself, and only I and one White passed the examination to attend Pilot Training School.” Harvey was then sent to Biloxi, Mississippi for thirty days of Basic Training. Upon com-

pletion, he was transferred to Tuskegee Army Air Field to start Pilot Training. “During the early forties the “wash-out or failure rate” for White Aviation Cadets going through Flight Training was running at 63%. The “wash-out or failure rate” for the first Cadet class at Tuskegee was only 40%. They said, “There is something wrong with this equation,” so they made sure the washout rate at Tuskegee was 70% or higher. We were washed out for anything; it did not have anything to do with our flying. Our Flight Training was different than the White Cadets. Everything we did had to be perfect. So when we graduated, we were better than our Instructors. Colonel Noel Parrish our Commander at Tuskegee Army Air Field would go to the White Flying School at Montgomery, Alabama and tell the Commander there that, “We wash out better pilots at Tuskegee than you graduate here at Montgomery,” which was true. Colonel Parrish was a White Military man from Kentucky, but he was behind this program at Tuskegee 100%. This “Tuskegee Experiment” or “Tuskegee Experience”

as it was called was designed to fail.” James H. Harvey graduated from Flying School at Tuskegee Army Air Field as a Second Lieutenant on 16 October 1944 and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1965. THE TUSKEGEE AIRMEN The true story of the Tuskegee Airmen is far broader than one of just aviation and the first American Black Military Pilots and Crewmen to serve during WWII. It is one of this country’s shining examples of unwavering human spirit, courage and enduring determination smack in the face of some of the most overwhelming personal odds. In an Experimental Training Program designed to fail from the start, Cadets at Tuskegee Army Air Field, Tuskegee, Alabama went through hell to earn their wings. Cadets endured blatant disrespect, injustice and double standards throughout their training

only to prove to themselves, the U.S. Army Air Corp., and their country that they most certainly could pilot aircraft if only given a fair chance. With the great support of Eleanor Roosevelt (wife of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, our 32nd President), not only would they become pilots, but would soon become arguably the most skilled aviators—and

most feared by the German pilots who fought them—during World War II. However, that is still just part of their story. What they didn’t know at the time was that their personal sacrifice and achievements would forever break new boundaries for both the military and the entire nation. While they battled the Germans in Europe, and racism at home, it would have been difficult for them to imagine that their courage and determination to overcome adversity would soon fuel positive and far-reaching change back home. Their example would ripple throughout the following decades and would be recognized as the birth of the Civil Rights Movement in this country. While many of these veterans came back to the States to start families, careers and go on to become community leaders, many airmen stayed on in the Military to make a career at what they did best, fly aircraft.

the Gondola

Connecting Telluride and Mountain Village PRICE: FREE ... HOURS: 7AM TO MIDNIGHT, 7 DAYS A WEEK

ince its opening in 1996, the Telluride/Mountain Village gondola has served as a one-of-a-kind transportation system – the first and only free public transportation system of its kind in the United States. The gondola links Telluride and Mountain Village and serves both as a lift for skiers and snowboarders and as public transportation for locals and visitors. The incredible 13-minute ride has 365 degree views of the San Juan Mountains and is often referred to by locals as, “the best commute in the country.” The gondola consists of 2 parts and 4 stations. The first leg travels between Telluride and Mountain Village, beginning on Oak Street in the town of Telluride and ending at Gondola Plaza in the Mountain Village core. The mid-point of the first leg is called the San Sophia Station. You can exit here to head to hiking trails or Allred’s Restaurant. Get right back on at the San Sophia mid-station to continue down to Mountain Village. The second part begins at Gondola Plaza in Mountain Village and takes you to the Mountain Market grocery store, Mountain Village post office, and the Mountain Village Town Hall. Where to Park: The best place to park for access to the Gondola is the Gondola Parking Garage in Mountain Village (Next to the Mountain Market). Parking is $7 per day, 6-2am, valid for one entry and exit or $25 overnight, 2-6am, valid for 24 hours. This allows you to travel between Mountain Village and Telluride and eliminates trying to find a parking space in the town of Telluride. Handicap-accessible cabins are available as well as pet cabins for leashed pets. Gondola attendants are standing by to help you load strollers, wheelchairs, etc.

Approximately 2.25 million passengers safely ride the gondola annually and over 35 million riders have been transported since opening day. The gondola operates roughly 287 days each year with routine maintenance scheduled during our shoulder season months. It takes about 13 minutes to get from the Town of Telluride to the Town of Mountain Village. A cabin travels 11 miles per hour at full speed, which means each cabin travels over 52,000 miles per year. Approximately 50 percent of the cabins are pet accessible. Wheelchair accessible cabins are also available. The drive between the two towns is eight miles long whereas the gondola travels three miles between the two towns.

Without notice, the gondola may close temporarily due to weather conditions, a power outage, or something else that is beyond our control. When this happens, a specific operating procedure occurs, which includes erecting closure signs and running a bus service. This usually transpires when the gondola is down for a prolonged amount of time usually 30 minutes or more.

MUSIC BY MODAZZ THU 5-8pm The VIP Welcome Reception at the Mountain Village Conference Center FRI 1-5pm Telluride Regional Airport; Fly In, Kennedy Cars and War Birds SAT 6-9pm VIP Evening Event at the Airport, Jerry O’Rourke JFK’s SS Agent Speaks MoDaZz, out of the Denver area, provides a unique trademark blend of smooth jazz covers, jazz standards, and fusion jams. Live performances by MoDaZz include a powerful array of songs by

26

artists such as Spyro Gyra, Richard Elliot, John Klemmer, Boney James, David Sanborn, Lee Ritenour, Eric Johnson, etc. MoDaZz has a way of re-arranging a song into a very loose format so as not to be limited by the song itself - but to give ample space for improvisation and fusion jams. The freedom to take musical detours into uncharted territory can make the music surprisingly unpredictable and extremely interesting as listeners try to anticipate what will happen next. MoDaZz lays down the funky smooth grooves that give people an irresistible urge to dance, while mixing in a touch of jazz/improv to keep it fresh.

MILLION DOLLAR HIGHWAY ROAD RALLY 1 Day Event

SAT 9am-5pm

The Million Dollar Highway Road Rally: Tour one of Colorado’s most scenic byways on this, approximately, 240 mile loop (estimated travel time: 5-9 hours). The Telluride Festival of Cars & Colors Rally Master will have already made this trip prior to the Festival dates and established a ‘time to match’ which will be known to only the Rally Master until Sunday, the last day of the Festival. The “Million Dollar Highway” gets its name from the estimated value of the orebearing mining tailings fill that was used to construct the road (and because it was incredibly expensive to build!). The highway passes over Red Mountain Pass (11,008 feet) and the Uncompahgre Gorge. A marvel of extreme engineering, it was designed by Russian immigrant Otto Mears and slices through rugged mountains as it follows old stagecoach routes and former pack trails.

After starting your day at the Morning Revv, 8-9am, punch your Rally Time Card at the designated “Rally’ desk at the Peaks (Saturday only) and head out on the San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway. From Telluride’s Mountain Village you will travel highway 145 along the San Miguel River through Placerville before turning onto Hwy 62 over the Dallas Divide (one of the most photographed places in Colorado). You will continue through Ridgway joining Hwy 550 through Ouray, over Red Mountain Pass, past Silverton, over the Million Dollar Highway and into Durango. From there you will take Hwy 160 to Mancos before heading north to Dolores, Rico and back to the Peaks Resort in Mountain Village where you will again punch your Rally Time Card (daily cut off time is 5pm).The participant that most closely matches the Rally Masters time will win

ltitude sickness occurs when you cannot get enough oxygen from the air at high altitudes. This causes symptoms such as a headache, loss of appetite, and trouble sleeping. It happens most often when people who are not used to high altitudes go quickly

from lower altitudes to 8000 ft or higher. Mild altitude sickness is common.Your fitness level and gender do not play a role in whether you get altitude sickness. Altitude sickness can be dangerous and it is smart to take special care here in the Telluride area

ALTITUDE SICKNESS SYMPTOMS A throbbing headache that gets worse during the night and when you wake up Loss of appetite Nausea Feeling weak and tired. In severe cases, you do not have the energy to eat, dress yourself, or do anything. Insomnia Dizziness

while you are visiting for the Festival. Air is “thinner” here at high altitudes. When you go too high too fast, your body cannot get as much oxygen as it needs. This causes the headache and other symptoms of altitude sickness. As your body adjusts, the symptoms go away. Your symptoms may be mild to severe. They may not start until a day after you have been at a high altitude. Many people say altitude sickness feels like having a hangover. Altitude sickness can affect your lungs and brain. When this happens, symptoms include being confused, not being able to walk straight (ataxia), feeling faint, and having blue or gray lips or fingernails. When you breathe, you may hear a sound like a paper bag being crumpled. These symptoms mean the condition is severe and may be deadly. If you have mild symptoms, you may be able to stay at that altitude and let your body get used to it. You may also be able to use oxygen to treat altitude sickness. Get some rest. You can explore, but take it easy. Limit any walking or activity. Drink plenty of water, but do not drink alcohol. Do not go to a higher altitude until your symptoms go away. This may take from 12 hours to 3 or 4 days. For the headache, you can take an overthe-counter medicine, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve). Go to a lower altitude if your symptoms are moderate to severe, get worse, or medicine or oxygen treatment does not help..

tephen Tebo has been an entrepreneur and collector all his life, with an affinity for shiny things: shiny shoes, shiny pennies, and shiny cars. He started out at the age of 8, shining shoes in his hometown of Hill City, Kansas. He soon developed a passion for coin collecting, parlaying the hobby into a successful business, which paid for his college tuition. After graduating from Fort Hays Kansas State College, he headed out west in a U-Haul with small daughter and his wife Shari, whom he married in his freshman year of College. Arriving in Boulder in the late ’60s, he opened Tebo Coin and eventually Tebo Store Fixtures, which became the largest distributor of store display cases in the United States. The success of both businesses forced him to look for more space, which led to the development of his current company, Tebo Properties, now the leading commercial real estate owner and developer in Boulder County, with a diverse portfolio of more than 200 properties and nearly two million square feet of office, retail and industrial space. Mr. Tebo’s passion for collecting did not end with coins. In 1975, he bought his first classic car, a sleeve-valve, three-door 1925 Willy’s Knight. His collection now numbers over 400 rare cars, housed in a warehouse in Longmont. Asked why he acquired so many cars Mr. Tebo replied, “when I was a kid I couldn’t have a car, so I guess I over did it a bit.” Mr. Tebo continues to make up for lost time. Recently he has acquired a 1929 Duesenberg and a mid-1950s Shelby Mustang. Other highlights of the collection are John Lennon’s white Rolls Royce, Steve McQueen’s Indian Chief, Frank Sinatra’s Jeep, the taxi used for the Jerry Seinfield show, a limited-production 1954 Kaiser Darrin, a room of Corvettes, British cars, vintage fire trucks and many more. Four full time staffers work for the Stephen Tebo Car Collection and each car is driven at least every 90 days. Mr. Tebo will occasionally grab one himself for a weekend spin. Mr. Tebo is also a prominent philanthropist and opens his car collection for charity parties six times a year, with all the ticket proceeds going to benefit a multitude of charities, including the Boy Scouts, the Humane Society, the CU Basketball team, and the Chamber of Commerce. He has also

funded the Tebo Family Medical Center at the Boulder Community Hospital, provided enhancements to the Pearl Street Mall, and supports numerous other civic organizations. He drives his yellow and gold antique fire truck in the Pep parade before every CU football game. At the Cars and Colors Festival, Mr. Tebo is exhibiting two of the most famous cars from his collection. The first is the 1957 Jaguar used by Jackie Kennedy when she lived in the White House. The second is the 1964 Miller-Meteor Cadillac hearse, which carried the body of John F. Kennedy from the Dallas hospital to the airport after his assassination on November 22, 1963. As if this were not enough to give goose bumps to car buffs and history aficionados alike, Ray Cody, founder of the Festival, has arranged for the hearse to be accompanied by a Secret Service agent who will discuss the events of that fateful day. Both cars will be on display at the K-TEX 3-Day Regional Fly-In event on Friday and Saturday, September 25 and 26, 9am-5pm, and on Sunday, September 27, 9am-3pm.

TAMMY ALLEN

PETER DODGE

There’s a storybook quality to Tammy Allen’s life and her love affair with automobiles. It began at an early age. Her dad was a car enthusiast, bought new models every two years, and polished and detailed them himself. His enthusiasm for cars was contagious, and it rubbed off on Tammy. She fondly recalls family vacations with idyllic road trips into the American heartland. The cars themselves have become part of automobile legend—among them, a 1954 Ford, a 1957 Oldsmobile, a 1957 Chevy, and a 1960 Mercury station wagon.

Peter Dodge is the Founder and Chief Performance Officer of Hanover Research, a global information services firm based in Washington, D.C., Hanover provides knowledge support to more than one thousand for-profit and non-profit organizations. Additionally, Mr. Dodge is the Founder and Chairman of The Peter G. Dodge Foundation, a philanthropic organization that supports the advancement of new treatments for, and the dissemination of up-to-date information about, alcohol-use disorder. He provides nearly all of the Foundation’s financial resources and guides its operations and programming. His vision is to solve the problem of insufficient treatment for alcohol-use disorder and to help others with the issue find their way to solutions that can restore their lives. Mr. Dodge’s other philanthropic interests include providing education and enrichment to young people, alleviating the suffering of animals, and helping those struggling with disease or lack of access to care. He serves as a Trustee of Christ School and as a mentor for the Telluride Venture Accelerator. Mr. Dodge holds a Bachelor’s degree in European History from Washington & Lee University. He travels frequently and divides his time between Washington DC, rural Colorado, and New York City.

Mike is the former Curator of the prestigious LeMay Car Museum and was on the Board of Directors for the Colorado Concours for 12 years, the Morgan Adams Concours for 5 Years and is currently on the board for the Parkerfest Car Show. Mike has also worked with the DTC Chamber’s Summerfest event and, as a Founding Member of the Telluride Festival of Cars & Colors, his energy, expertise and advice have been invaluable.

ART BUSHELL Arthur started his fascination with cars at a very young age. He started building his first Hot Rod at the age of fourteen. While continuing his love for cars he also become involved with airplanes. He got his pilot’s license and owned many airplanes which led him to starting a Freight Airline while continuing his career as an Insurance Executive. After selling the Airline he put his full attention to adding to his car collection. He assembled a beautiful collection from a rare Buick Touring Car to Rolls Royces. When asked what type of cars he collected he replied “Whatever I liked.” 42

DAN CATON Dan has been a car guy since he was first seduced by the beauty and power of the 1960’s muscle, sports, and grand touring cars. He freely admits James Bond might have had something to do with it. Since then his tastes have broadened, and he has owned all types of cars from virtually every car-producing nation (“I skipped Russia, France, and Yugoslavia and have no intention of correcting these omissions”). “The Telluride Festival of Cars and Colors will be the perfect marriage of my two passions,” Dan says. “The beauty of hundreds of spectacular examples of automotive history combined with one of the most beautiful places on earth. Perfect!”

MIKE DANNER Mike Danner is a resident of Telluride Colorado. Mike is a Porsche aficionado and a visionary who has helped shape this world class event. Mike shares his passion for cars with his beautiful wife Ramona and his two sons Michael and Peter. When he is not attending the world’s best auto events in his spare time, he enjoys hiking and piloting the beautiful San Juan Mountains.

BILL GORDON Bill Gordon showed up one year ago today on main street when we offered our first Telluride trophy nights, with his resto mod red pickup. Since that time Bill has jumped in with both feet to help promote this world class event. A regular at our trophy nights, Bill is always eager to help promote the event in any way possible; from helping set up rain shelters to calling in a beer run. An entrepreneur of many fields, Bill is a successful well-known local fixture in our community, we consider ourselves lucky to have him as a founding member.

SEAN KELLETT

DR. GEORGE MACK

LINDA SOUCIE

Sean Kellett is the owner of Think Driven (www.ThinkDr iven. com) an automotive repair shop, located in the west Chicago suburb of Sycamore, Il. An automotive technician for over 20 years, Sean’s passion for cars began at a pretty young age; disassembling his bicycle’s to fix and building RC model cars. This led quickly to rebuilding an old 1978 Mustang Cobra II. Sean had an automotive teacher in high school, who believed so much in his natural ability with vehicle diagnostics & repairs, that he wouldn’t allow him to miss a class. That dedication paid off, Sean earned a scholarship to a Ford sponsored college program. He then worked for a Ford dealership for 12 years before opening his own repair shop. Educating his customers is important to Sean, so he has offered free clinics to focus on the importance of vehicle maintenance to local women’s groups, Boy Scout troops, Dad’s and kids group.

Dr. George Mack is a retired cardiothoracic surgeon from Kalamazoo, Michigan. He moved to Telluride seeking an outdoor lifestyle that was both an active and exciting way to write the next chapter in his life. George is an avid skier, golfer and loves to fly fish. If you don’t find him there, you may cross his path on one of the regions back country mountain bike trails. George is a neighbor of the founder Ray Cody. When the two men first met it was when George pulled up in his classic turbo Porsche fitted with roll bars and a five point harness. The two men became instant friends. George has been a big supporter of this new festival since the two men first met in the spring of 2014.The Telluride Festival of Cars & Colors is a better event with the help of Dr. George Mack.

My Dad was a true car guy and taught me how to change the oil, tires and do minor repairs on my first car – a 1970VW bug. I have a 1973 VW Super Beetle now that I am slowly restoring. This is a photo of me and my dad’s first Bug Eye Sprite. It was a 1957 and this was taken in Dreux AF Base, France shortly before my 1st birthday (1960 something). Long before the days of child car seats, they used to put me in a plastic tub and slide me under the space behind the front seats. Only Healey people will understand this! My Dad always had Healeys, owned 2 Sprites and three 3000s over the years. He always drove them and we actually used one in Hawaii for the 3 years we were stationed there as a family car for the 5 of us! This a photo of my Dad in his last Healy, a 1963 Austin Healey 3000. This was taken at the top of Independence Pass. He belonged to a sport car club out of Denver and they drove over Independence and down to Glenwood Springs for that car show. I think this was 1986. He bought this one from a college girl in Boulder who needed tuition money in 1974. It was a regular fixture at the Air Force Academy from 1974 until he retired in 1979. He knew a guy at the Black Forest FBO that would slip him a little Jet-A that he added to keep it running good when they did away with unleaded fuel! We drove it, with his ashes, to the Chapel for his memorial service. My sister has this car in Old Greenwich, CT and still drives it regularly. I have moved on from sports cars to rodeo and roping horses. My primary road ride is a 2003 Dodge Ram 3500 diesel, which is almost always hooked up to a horse trailer. I am raising and training Quarter Horses now, for myself, kids and grandkids. In my spare time, of course! I am really looking forward to, and am thrilled to be a part of the Telluride Festival of Cars & Colors.

RICH NUTTALL Born and raised on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, with an ocean across the street. Rich was an avid boater at a very young age, learning not only to sail, crew on regattas, but also to work in the boat yard among the seasoned boat builders. In addition to this passion in his early years, he began flying at the age of 17 and has been flying airplanes and helicopters ever since. After serving in the U.S. Army and receiving a B.S. in Finance, Rich has spent the last 30 years in aviation teaching folks how to fly and managing airports. As the Airport/FBO manager for the past 22 years at the Telluride Regional Airport he has been keeping the airport on a sound financial footing, and involved with over $90 million in airport improvements. Rich’s passion extends to automobiles too. He is currently doing a frame-up restoration on a 1965 Jeep Gladiator pick-up. He’s excited to help host the Telluride Festival of Cars & Colors at the Airport where great cars and airplanes will come together under one roof.

RYAN RANDELS From the early years, Ryan Randels has been driven by passion. He’s been chasing that passion ever since his father introduced him to the import and European automotive scene as a child. From there, he’s transformed his passion into something that would become a growing digital empire; Revvolution.com. When Randels created this progressive media outlet in 2011, he set out to do something that the industry had yet to see or understand. Bringing together automotive enthusiasts of all types and ages, Randels has become determined to take on an uphill challenge—one that will change the face of how millions of enthusiasts peer into the automotive scene on a global scale. All of which, built to share and experience the passions of others. Chasing his dreams as a young entrepreneur, Randels explains, “I do everything in my life for the pursuit of happiness and balance. If you do what you love and love what you do, then happiness and success is inevitable. This is what I aim to extend to the people and businesses around me.”

Nicole Finger As a figurative painter I’m constantly attracted to the connection between the viewer and the subject. I initially approach my paintings strictly from a visual standpoint. Yet there is an obvious and palpable connection which occurs through the direct eye contact, as well as the emotion and physicality of the subject, whether human or animal. It’s this interaction with the image that I find most interesting and open to interpretation. Growing up in Bethesda, Maryland, I was greatly influenced by my artist mother as well as my father’s lifelong passion with owning and racing horses. After receiving a Bachelor of Fine Art at the University of Colorado in Boulder, I worked in various art fields, including illustration, in both California and Colorado. My work continues to show both locally and nationally. I have lived in Telluride, Colorado for several years surrounded by the spectacular beauty of the San Juan Mountains with my husband and two children whom are a constant inspiration for creative thought, beauty and humor. — Nicole Finger For Commissioned Portraits and more information visit fingerpaintingart.com or email Nicole@fingerpaintingart.com
