T H E H E I GH T O F F L AV O R Serving exquisite food and breathtaking views. 970.728.2525 | ThePeaksResort.com | Mountain Village
welcome On behalf of the Cars & Colors Festival, Property Management of Telluride, the Telluride Mountain Village Owners Association, the Telluride Regional Airport and the Telluride Ski & Golf Resort, we want to welcome you to the scenic towns of Telluride and Mountain Village. We are excited to host you this year as we roll into our 4th Annual Telluride Festival of Cars & Colors. Over the last four years we have been fortunate to have attended some other great automotive events, covering all regions of this vast county. Automotive events that share common elements; perhaps a serene golf course or a beautiful body of water. Some events, as with the famed ‘Pebble Beach’ of Monterey, offer a golf course along with the Pacific Ocean. But nothing rivals the setting we offer here in Telluride; it’s unlike any venue on earth. The snow capped peaks, the blue Colorado sky and the fresh cut grass of the Telluride golf course make for an unparalleled backdrop. Our vision is to make Cars & Colors the finest Automotive - Aviation - Motorcycle event in the country and we are well on our way. This year our guest speaker is Danny Thompson. Danny is fresh off of setting a new land speed record on the Bonneville Salt Flats of Utah. For car guys over 60, we know the name “Thompson” well. We all had ‘Mickey Thompson’ tires on our cars back in the day or we weren’t “cool”. Danny has fulfilled his father Mickey’s dream of racing the Challenger II at speeds of 400 plus mph. Danny will share his story Saturday night at the Hangar 29 Party and you won’t want to miss it. In closing, enjoy our mom & pop businesses on main street in Telluride and Mountain Village. Sample all the world class restaurants, breath in the fresh mountain air and take a ride on the free gondola. As you leave the festival this year, stop to make reservation s for next year’s return trip to the Telluride Festival of Cars & Colors because, as good as this year is going to be, we’re just getting started! Thank you for coming along with us on the ride. Ray and Anita Cody Festival Founders 5

A marvel of extreme engineering, it was designed by Russian immigrant Otto Mears and slices through rugged mountains as it follows old stagecoach routes and former pack trails. At 448mph, Drive & Destiny Finally Collide Danny Thompson had a date with destiny, its flame ignited decades ago by Danny’s father, Mickey Thompson. Mickey Thompson, known for his performance tire empire and recognized as an international racing legend, first pulled onto the Bonneville Salt Flats of Utah in 1960 with his self built “Challenger I”. Mickey made one world record setting pass at 406 mph that year that would set into motion the dream that has recently come to fruition through his son, Danny. On Saturday, August 11th of this year, Danny Thompson piloted the Challenger 2, a vehicle his father had first introduced to the salt flats in 1968, to a qualifying pass of 446.605 mph. The following day, he delivered a back-up run of 450.909 mph, giving him a two-way average of 448.757 mph, enough for an official Southern California Timing Association (SCTA) AA/FS record — and an unofficial piston-powered world record — a halfcentury after the Challenger II’s Bonneville debut. “In 1968, my dad, the mad scientists at Kar Kraft, and an elite group of Southern California gear heads created a vehicle that they believed had the potential to become the world’s fastest hot rod,” Thompson asserts on his website. “It took five decades, a lot of elbow grease, and a few modifications, but I feel like I’ve finally been able to fulfill their dream, as well as my own.” There are faster cars on the salt at Bonneville, but they are powered by rocket or jet engines. Thompson’s is a more classic piston-engine vehicle, even if it runs on a brew of nitro-methane and alcohol and gets .1 mile to the gallon. Equipped with twin nitro-burning Hemi V8s with total of 5,000 hp, the all-wheel-drive car is more than twice as powerful as it was when Mickey first built it. Reflecting on his accomplishment, Danny said it came with a cost. “What does it take to go 400 mph on salt? You know, it takes determination,” he said. “It takes guts, for sure. And ambition. How bad do you want it?” 40

On the Challenger II’s final outing, Danny wanted it, and he got it; for Danny’s current Challenger II team, for his dad Mickey, and for himself... a 448.757mph speed record! The Cars & Colors team would like to congratulate Danny and his team on their new land speed record. The Festival invites you to see the Challenger II in person at the Telluride Airport Saturday, September 29th during the Festival weekend. SAT 10 am – 4 pm and 6 pm – 9 pm. Danny will also be the guest speaker at the Hangar 29 Saturday Evening Airport Event, 6pm - 9pm. 41

Omi Privé
A Celebration of Nature A celebration of nature and passion for the craft is evident in every piece of jewelry from Omi Privé. Proudly handcrafted in the United States, each Omi Privé creation is inspired by the gemstones natural beauty and color. Award-winning design combined with skilled craftsmanship, captures the essence of each gemstone. It is this love for nature, appreciation for rarity, and unyielding passion for quality and design that inspires Omi Privé to create not just jewelry, but wearable art. My family has a deep history in colored gemstones dating back seven generations. Colored gemstones have been my inspiration since attending my first Tucson gem show at six years old. My passion is to acquire the most beautiful, rare gemstones available and bring them to life through the art of jewelry design and superb craftsmanship. Before starting the design process, I study each gem and sometimes carry it with me, admiring it for days. I want to understand each individual gem and then design around it, unveiling the stone’s true beauty.” Niveet Nagpal, President and Head Designer. Omi Privé is a proud sponsor of the Cars & Colors Festival, supplying rare gems and custom jewelry pieces for the winners of American Concours, International Concours and Motorcycle Concours People’s Choice Awards along with the Million Dollar Highway Road Rally. 45

What Is a Hyper Car? So…What, exactly, is the difference between a hyper car and a super car? They’re both examples of extreme automotive achievement, but where does one draw the line between something that qualifies as “super” versus something that can be considered “hyper?” You can think of the difference between hyper cars and super cars kind of like the relationship between squares and rectangles. That is to say that all hyper cars are super cars but not all super cars are necessarily hyper cars. There isn’t a clear line drawn between one and the other. That also means a car that fit into the category of Hyper Car one year might drop to being a supercar in just a few years following. A hyper car embodies everything insane about super cars, but to the nth degree. And that’s what marks the real difference between a super car and a hyper car: outrageousness. With super cars already occupying the highest tier of automotive excellence, it takes quite a bit to reach the pinnacle above it. And while a super car doesn’t necessarily need to meet all the requirements to be super, a hyper car must be mind-boggling in performance, luxury, price, and exclusivity in order to rank as such. We’re talking million dollar price tags, luxurious hand-crafted interiors; horsepower and torque that push the limits of what the human body can handle… you get the point. Make sure to see the Hyper Car & Super Car Display at the Telluride Airport in Hangar 29 on Saturday, September 29th, 10AM - 4PM & 6PM - 9PM. It’s going to be outrageous! 48
