SMILE FOR THE CAMERA —& FOREVER—With Visual Anchors BY KEALAH PARKINSON
C
apturing a moment in time is an amazing feat. I mean, anyone can snap a shutter (or in this day & age, push an icon of a button) & take a picture. But really capturing the essence of that moment is the work of the most skilled photographer. Sometimes you get lucky—after all, every picture does tell a story—but those most skilled photogs know the trick: You have to keep clicking to get that one candid shot that brings it all home. We had our Christmas family photos taken today. Can I just say, all bias aside, a-DORBS!? Okay, maybe not all bias aside. And also, that statement only applies to the littles. Hubby & I both commented that we need to work on embracing a healthier lifestyle. We’ll just leave it at that. There were some posed shots of all 4 of us, some posed pics of the boys, a cute series of an attempted pose at all of us kissing the baby (so cute!). But the magic happened when the photographer’s assistant had a brainstorm & just set the baby down to crawl, then started calling for our toddler to come get him. Mr. Photographer snapped away, shifting the focus between one or the other of them or both of them together. And candids galore captured this now-

moment of our boys as brothers at these ages, growing together. (Excuse me while I get out my hanky & dab away a mommy tear….) Ahem. So, where was I? Ah, yes: Pictures. Pictures make great anchors. What’s an anchor, you ask? Check out my post from Day 34 that explains. In a nutshell, they’re poses or gestures—or even memories, songs, words or yes, images—that elicit a specific feeling from within you. Used intentionally, they help to conjure positive emotions at exact moments. For example, if you’re having a stressful moment, you can call up a peaceful feeling to wash that stress away; if you are nervous about an upcoming big event, you can conjure confidence. I have several gesture & pose anchors that I’ve been using for years. I have a select number of clients, however, who are visual thinkers. And for them, visual anchors work best. One former client used a baby picture of his older daughter: First, he looked at the picture over & over again & thought about how happy he felt as a new father, how proud he was of his daughter, & how good her smile made him feel. Gradually, he began closing his eyes after viewing the image in order to see its imprint in his mind’s eye. Eventually, he was able to simply close his eyes wherever he was & elicit that proud, happy feeling of love. It worked wonders to clear away all kinds of negativity! I learn from my clients regularly. So, at our photo shoot today, I was not only trying to be as mindful as possible to savor the good, fun feeling I was having, but I also thought to myself, “These will make great visual anchors!” Now, I excitedly await the digital images …. I not only used mindfulness to stay present & savor today, I skipped a little into the future (oops) to consider which pose or candid photo would make the best Visual Anchor. Time will tell! By the way, visual anchors don’t only have to be photos. What are some creative visual anchors you use or would like to try?
