ILLNESS: WHEN BEING HERE NOW ISN’T THE MOST PLEASANT BY KEALAH PARKINSON

esterday’s family pictures were a totally fun experience; the rest of the day, not so much. We had planned to have a little QT—family quality time—that afternoon, after the photo shoot. So, we dutifully piled into the minivan & started driving to parts unknown, weighing our options as the kiddos munched on french fries & baby bottles/sippy cups, then promptly fell asleep. As we meandered through a few towns during their nap, casually sight-seeing old memory spots & really getting into the spirit of the afternoon, we suddenly heard a much-dreaded coughing sound from the middle seats. Yep. Puke central. Our toddler was apparently ill. And in typical little kid fashion, he’d given no warning signs that morning. So, we had blindly gone about our day, blissfully unaware of the trainwreck waiting to derail our plans. Cue record scratch sound fx. parking lot—he, pawing through a bag of too-small clothes meant for donation to find something that might work for an outfit change; me, rinsing the soiled bought-specially-for-the-photo-shoot clothes with a bottle of water (while simultaneously holding my nose & thanking heaven we had bottled water & old clothes in the car). And poor 3-year old bravely standing in his Pull-Up & light-up tennis shoes, tummy aching, waiting to be changed. And baby brother magically sleeping through it all in his car seat! Miracles! Today, I knew what was on my docket: nothing. More specifically, no lofty plans about family quality time or deep-cleaning housekeeping or even the scheduled play date. But instead: pajamas, television, lots of snuggles on the couch, & medicine as needed. Today, after a night of many awakenings (the standard for sick kiddos, I’m quickly learning), I was perfectly content to be fully present with my littles—enjoying the moment, playing Nurse Mommy & doing oh-so much hugging. Today, I have been here now. Day 46 Mini-Mindfulness Tool: Tending to a Sick Kiddo. Even as an adult, I often want my mom when I’m not feeling well. This type of connection is irreplaceable. And I’m so grateful to be afforded the opportunity to enjoy it & assuage my little’s pain.
