East tennessee East Tennessee PBS’ Celebration of Over 100 Years of Country Music

E

ast Tennessee PBS’ celebration of Over 100 Years of Country Music highlights some of the little known stories of the people, places, and events from East Tennessee that shape the early days of country music. This month we look back on Knoxville area legend, Cas Walker. An area businessman, politician, radio and television personality Cas Walker is considered responsible for the rise in popularity of country music in East Tennessee. While known for being a straight-shooting character and his political antics, his real genius was knowing his customers and supporters had a connection to the East Tennessee sound. Walker brought them together through his radio and television shows. Cas Walker’s Farm and Home Show was a vehicle to promote his chain of grocery stores and initially was a radio program that aired on WROL-AM and WIVK-AM and later was televised on WBIR. The show advertised weekly specials over the airways around music acts that included Roy Acuff, Jimmy Martin, Bill Monroe, Carl Smith, Jim Nabors, and Chet Atkins. The programs helped to launch the early careers of The Everly Brothers, and at the age of ten, Dolly Parton told Walker she wanted to work for him, landing her first radio and television gig before her family even owned a TV. Cas Walker died in 1998, and while he was a self-made multi-millionaire and well-known politician, Cas Walker’s legacy will be forever tied to the promotion of the East Tennessee sound of country music.

RIO DÓCE ... THE GEM OF THE BLUE RIDGE

My dad was in the US Air Force and from 1954 to 1958 we were stationed in England. My mother was an avid antique collector and when we returned to the States, she had hundreds of antiques. Among them were these four Stained Glass windows with protective plate glass the same size. They were from the 1890’s or before. They are 96”x 32” and still in the original frames ready to be installed anywhere They would look wonderful in a church or mansion. They have been in my family for over 60 years. When my parents passed away, they were passed on to me. I have them in my shop in Spruce Pine along with a few more antiques we brought back to the States. Call for more information and then come and see them.

We will transform your stones into family heirlooms.

Greeneville’s Historic Tours Return April 1 Greeneville, Tennessee: Tennessee’s second oldest town is brought to life as you stroll down the same streets that Andrew Johnson did when he returned from the White House in 1869.

The 90-minute ’A Walk with the President’ tour, available through Main Street Greeneville Tours, will take you back in time. Experience the architectural treasures of our historic churches and homes while walking the same streets as notable American heroes. A stop at Old Harmony Cemetery will bring alive such stories as the great cholera epidemic of 1873. Great photo opportunities are available during the stop at

Tennessee’s oldest Goal (jail).

Now in its fourteenth year the walking tour along with its sister tour of the Dickson-Williams Mansion, offered daily at 1:00 pm, is conducted by professional guides ready to share their knowledge of this historic community. Tickets may be purchased at the General Morgan Inn where tours begin daily Monday through Saturday, April through October, at 9:30 AM. For groups over twelve people please call Main Street Tours at 423-787-0500 a minimum of twenty-four hours in advance to arrange your tour.
