Great Pyrenees' Doc, Maggie & Daisy at Franklin Park®

n 2015 Franklin Park was challenged to create a canine companion program for residents residing in their San Antonio memory care communities. Immediately the Franklin communities sprang into action and reached out to trainers and others in the dog community who might have had experience with placing dogs in senior communities. into the scenario and they will immediately calm down and communicate with the dog, pet, stroke, love on the dog. Over the course of a couple successful months, Franklin Park began working with the Texas Great Pyrenees Rescue association and added other Great Pyrenees therapy dogs at their facilities in other locations. Daisy at The Landing in Stone Oak, and Maggie at Franklin Park Boerne. Great Pyrenees are great therapy dogs. They are naturally livestock guard dogs; their job is to watch their flock. Which is exactly what they do in memory care. As large strong dogs, they are not aggressive but resilient when a resident goes to grab that big pile of fur. They don’t mind the attention. As gentle giants they are patient and seem to know when one of their flock needs some extra TLC. Of course, you need to treat them like employees. They need time off work too, they need their exercise and play time. “Another result of the program is the family’s response to Doc, Maggie and Daisy”, stated the employee. Families usually walk through the front doors asking where the dog is, they bring treats. Not how is mom and dad doing today, but where is Doc? The results were immediate and dramatic. With a trial dog at their aid they quickly saw residents who were not normally engaged through normal memory care programming reach out and respond. Residents were immediately engaged, asking for the dog’s name, was it male or female, could they pet it. Then normally non-verbal residents began talking to the dog, just a child would speak to a new-found puppy. We were immediately sold on the idea and we began trying to identify breeds. The result was the introduction of “Doc”, a giant Great Pyrenees rescue dog from Gods Paws, being placed into the Franklin Park Alamo Heights community which was just opening up. Residents would reach out and start talking to the dog. Very specific things that you are looking for (in) cognitive therapy. They would say things like, ‘What a beautiful white dog. What beautiful white fur he has. Isn’t he a big dog? What’s his name?’ Those are very cognitive actions. It’s what you want to see in someone whose got Alzheimer’s or other dementias.”, stated the Franklin Park employee. When a resident is agitated or upset, we can bring Doc

ome pet owners may be under the impression that their cat or dog is more resilient than the average pet, but this can be a dangerous assumption to have as temperatures rise. A good rule of thumb for pet owners to remember: if it’s hot for you, it’s hot for your pet too! Here are some important things to keep in mind as we continue onward into the thick of the summer heat.
Water and Shade If your pet spends a lot of time outdoors, it’s important to keep a cool dish of water available and provide some form of shade for your pet. These aren’t just humane practices to remember, they’re also city law. Dishes should not be metal, since they can heat up quickly in the sun and pet owners should remember to refill dishes with fresh water daily. Stagnant water can attract mosquitos and encourage bacteria growth. Shade can include natural shade cover from trees or artificial shade cover, such as from a patio or pop-up umbrella.

Walking Times Limit your pet’s walking time to sunset and sunrise. Your pet’s paw pads are tough, but they aren’t invincible. Pets can suffer serious burns if they’re allowed to walk on the hot asphalt or a searing sidewalk, and you may not even know the extent of the damage until it’s too late. If you notice your pet showing signs of discomfort, limping, whining when walking, or if you see red blisters after a walk outdoors, these could be signs of painful burns to their paws. Keep Them Home We get it: in a perfect world, every store, restaurant, bar, and building would be pet-friendly. But, at least right now, it’s just not feasible. So when you’re running errands in the heat, do yourself and your pet a favor: keep them home. Keeping a pet out with you during a busy day can increase the risk that they’ll be left or

forgotten in a hot car. It takes only 10 minutes for the temperature in a car to increase by 20 degrees, and by 30 minutes that temperature increases by 35 degrees. That means even on cool 70 degree days, your car can reach temperatures over 100 degrees in less than an hour. These high temperatures are lethal and can cause your pets to suffer from heat stroke. An alternative idea: if you plan on having a day out with your pet, be sure and keep any non-pet-friendly venues and activities off of your to-do list. A quick internet search will reveal a plethora of nearby dog-friendly activities and eateries that you can enjoy with the whole family. Did You Know? If you see a pet in a hot car that appears in distress, San Antonio Animal Care Services recommends the following: write down the license plate number, make, and model of the car and ask nearby store associates to page the car’s owners. If you do not receive a response, call 311 or a non-emergency police number. San Antonio animal care officers are authorized to use reasonable force, including the breaking of a side window, to remove a pet from a car if they feel the animal’s health or safety is endangered. omiting and bloody diarrhea are a common reason pets are brought into the emergency room. As a pet owner, you want to be prepared in case your pet ever experiences these symptoms. If you notice any bloody diarrhea or vomiting, it is important that your pet be evaluated quickly by a veterinarian, as symptoms can develop suddenly and cause dehydration due to large fluid losses from the stomach and intestines.

There are several potential causes of vomiting and bloody diarrhea that include: • Change in diet • Getting into the garbage • Stress (i.e. Owner being out of town) • Intestinal parasites • Inflammatory bowel disease • Metabolic causes (kidney, liver, or other organs not functioning well) • Allergic reaction that is affecting the intestines and not just the skin • Many, many, many others Often, the cause of the vomiting and diarrhea is never fully determined, however supportive therapy such as intravenous fluids and anti-nausea medication is needed. What should you do: Have your pet evaluated by a veterinarian (your primary veterinarian, or if after hours, your nearest emergency animal hospital) What can you expect once at the hospital? Physical exam – this helps us determine overall health of your pet and help determine best recommendations. Blood work – this is recommended to evaluate the cause of the diarrhea. Sometimes diarrhea is not because of intestinal upset but due to other organs that may not be functioning properly, such as the liver and the kidneys, which blood work helps determine. X-rays of your pet’s abdomen – this is recommended to rule out an obvious obstruction in the intestines

that may be the cause of the vomiting and bloody diarrhea. Fecal exam – this will help evaluate if parasites are the cause of the vomiting and bloody diarrhea. Abdominal ultrasound – if available, this will help to evaluate the internal organs. Based on the results of the physical exam and diagnostics it may be recommended that your pet be kept in the hospital on intravenous fluids and hospitalized for support, or given fluids under the skin and monitored at home. While bloody diarrhea and vomiting are cause for concern, they are symptoms that can typically be treated. Dr. Jeannie Clark is the Head of Emergency and Critical Care at MissionVet Specialty & Emergency. Dr. Clark completed her undergraduate degree at Texas A&M, her veterinary degree at Western University of Health Sciences, and an internship and 3-year residency in emergency and critical care at Lakeshore Veterinary Specialists. She also enjoys giving back to her community as the K9 Special Ops Unit Veterinary Medical Director for District 7 Fire & Rescue. When not practicing medicine, Dr. Clark enjoys outdoor pursuits: hiking, running, and camping, as well as excursions with her dogs Mickey and Ruger.

Q: Is raw food healthier than commercial dog food? —Thank you, Art A: This question has been around for a very long time. True raw food is not recommended by the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Assoc). I have a few clients on raw food who are okay, but I do not recommend it. Raw meat can contain harmful bacteria and uncooked bones can cause bowel obstruction
and intestinal perforation. Consider an organic dog food instead or cook your own dog food. Q: Questions have been going around the internet lately about whether it is safe for dogs to have ice cubes/ice water. What is your opinion on this? —Thank you, Dana A: A few cubes or small pieces of ice are fine, not in excess. Chewing on large pieces of ice can chip the enamel or the tooth. Your dog needs exercise! •
All dogs need plenty of exercise. If they don’t get it, they will develop bad habits such as chewing on furniture, socks and shoes, or dig up flowerbeds. They may even get depressed, and become really mischievous and unreliable.

Spending 30 minutes to an hour walking to the park with a dog walker, although better than nothing, doesn’t provide much exercise for a pooch, and receiving a picture of where your baby pooped may make you feel better, but it doesn’t do much for your dog.
Introducing Pet Galaxy’s Doggieland® Daycare and Door to Door Service •
For roughly the same money you would spend on 30 minutes for a dog walker’s time, we will pick up your fur-babies from your home in the morning, transport them to Pet Galaxy’s large Doggieland® play park for the entire day, where they can enjoy the park and play with compatible, like-minded dogs. Once they have experienced enough play, they will come inside for an all-important nap before they go back out for more fun again. At the end of the day, we will bring your happy and satisfied babies back home.

Prices start at $24.75 for all day daycare plus $5.00 each way for the bus ticket — flat rate. Our initial target areas are primarily neighborhoods north of Loop 1604 along the Hwy 281 corridor, including Stone Oak, Encino, Canyon Springs, Timberwood Park, Johnson Ranch and Bulverde/Spring Branch.

On request — for an extra charge, we can even serve lunch and/or dinner, administer medications, provide Bath, Brush and Nails service and/or a full groom.
