Dr. Chandra Harrigan was born and raised in the Caribbean and completed her veterinary degree at Virginia Tech. Her favorite activities include spending time in the gym, pursuing volunteer community work, and spending time with her husband and two Chihuahuas. Dr. Amy Robinson received her veterinary degree from L.S.U. and has worked emergency medicine across the country. She has special interest in toxicology and trauma. In her free time, Dr. Robinson enjoys running marathons, IPO training GSD, spending time with her husband and four kids, and traveling the world. Lennon is a two-year-old handsome Golden Retriever adopted by MissionVet’s technician supervisor. He is happiest outdoors when he is splashing around in the water! Harley is a sweet two-year-old Chihuahua whose favorite place to be is at her mom’s side, next to the one-and-only, Dr. Harrigan! She enjoys working in the intensive care unit and has a special interest in wound management, toxicities, and urethral obstructions. She enjoys kickboxing, going to the movies, and spending time with her dogs. Dr. John Beach joined the MissionVet emergency team after practicing veterinary medicine throughout North Texas for 30 years. Outside of work, Dr. Beach enjoys cooking, art, travel, and fishing. He has always loved the hill country and enjoys exploring it alongside his Australian Shepherd, Bristol. Dr. Jeannie Clark is the head of Emergency and Critical Care at MissionVet. She completed her veterinary degree at Western University of Health Sciences and completed an internship and three-year residency at Lakeshore Veterinary Specialists. calmingyourdogduring fireworksseason Fear of fireworks is a fairly common phobia for dogs. The noise, smell of sulfur and flashing lights can be quite upsetting. Fortunately there are several things you can do to keep your pet safe and cared for during the celebration. Prepare your House Shut all the doors and windows and draw curtains to block flashes and reduce noise levels. Keep the lights on to calm your pet and make him feel more secure, rather than being scared in a dark room. Drown the Noise Out Play music or turn on something that emits white noise. Vacuum, wash clothes, turn on a fan or the television. Anything you can do to minimize or cover the sounds from outside.

Create a ‘Safe Place’ Choose an inner room that is least impacted by the outside noise. Make the room cozy and put down familiar bedding somewhere pleasant such as under a table or behind a chair. Allow the dog to hide when they are scared and give them a Special treat like a meaty bone or a special chew toy. Provide a Treat Toy that holds delectable nibbles – anything to divert your dog’s attention from the noise. Prepare Keep a GPS Collar on your dog just in case he accidentally escapes. Make sure your dog is microchipped

too. That way if he does escape without a collar this will insure you are reunited as quickly as possible. Exercise! Make sure your dog gets plenty of exercise earlier in the day. Place them in their ‘Safe Place’ half an hour to an hour before the fireworks are due to be set off. Try using lavender scented items to calm your dog before the event begins. Purchase a “Thunder Shirt” ahead of time. These garments apply gentle, constant pressure that has a dramatic calming effect. Stay Calm Try to act and behave as normally as possible since your dog will pick up on any odd behavior. Remain calm, happy and cheerful as this will send positive signals to your dog. Finally, for extreme cases of phobia, contact your vet to discuss a prescription medication. Did you know that more dogs are lost during the 4th of July Holiday than any other time of the year? Don’t let this happen to you! Prepare ahead of time so you and your dog can have a safe and peaceful celebration. W
ith summer in full swing and temperatures rising, it is tempting to take your four-legged friend outside with you to enjoy the sun. Before you do though, there are a few things you should know!

There are various ways that we, as humans, dissipate heat. One way is through sweat or perspiration. But do dogs sweat? They do! Just not a lot and not efficiently. Dogs have sweat glands, called merocrine glands located in the foot pads and they function to help cool them down. Panting, however, is the most common way that dogs can cool down on a hot day. When most people think about heat stroke, they typically envision dogs left with inadequate ventilation in hot vehicles, but heat stroke can occur in other conditions as well. When an animal is left outside in hot/ humid conditions without adequate shade and water or when exercised in hot or humid weather. This is especially true for certain dogs that may be predisposed to heat stroke. Major factors that can lead to your dog becoming more likely to having a heat stroke include: obesity, brachycephalic (short-nosed) breeds or even having a long, thick hair coat. What are the initial signs of heat stroke? • Excessive panting • Restless behavior • Hypersalivation or excessive drooling • Ataxia or wobbly/unsteady on the feet • Collapse • Bright red or even blue color of the gums If your dog is experiencing any of the above. What do you do now? First, remove your pet from the hot/ humid environment and begin cooling measures. You can wet your pet’s ear flaps and paws with cool water and direct a fan on those wet areas to help with evaporative cooling. Most importantly, transport your pet to the nearest veterinary hospital immediately. Please be aware that heat stroke is a condition that can affect every organ in the body and it is important to seek veterinary care as simply cooling down your pet may not be enough. Studies have shown that delayed admission to the

hospital negatively affects your pet’s prognosis and outcome. What can you expect at your vet? When your pet arrives, the veterinary team will want to immediately assess your pet’s vitals (temperature, heart rate, breathing rate and blood pressure). Depending on your pet’s temperature at arrival, your vet may also want to continue with cooling measures, IV fluid therapy and even oxygen therapy. Since we know that heat stroke can affect multiple organs in the body, your vet will want to perform blood work to evaluate internal organ function. Heat stroke is a very critical condition with serious secondary complications that can arise, and these patients require intensive monitoring and may need to spend several days in the hospital. Unfortunately, despite aggressive therapy, some pets can still pass away. Prevention is key! As much as we love having our dogs accompanying us on errands and activities this summer, please avoid leaving pets in cars or prolonged activity on hot days. Dr. Harrigan was born and raised on the beautiful island of St. Maarten in the Caribbean. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in Animal Biology from the University of Guelph, in Ontario Canada in 2006. She then decided to leave the cold winters of the north and obtained her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Virginia Tech in 2011. She has a strong interest in emergency medicine and has practiced as an emergency clinician for years in the busy cities of Richmond, VA; Phoenix, AZ; and now San Antonio, TX.

A: Removing ticks at the base with fine-tipped tweezers is fine, grasping close to the skin and removing all parts. Thoroughly clean the affected area and apply Neosporin. Dispose of a live tick by submersing in alcohol.

A: When dogs start to run into things, are easily startled or act disoriented, they may be suffering from loss of vision. There is a test that is used to detect retina function called an Electroretinogram (ERG). The test is performed by a veterinary ophthalmologist specialist. A visit to your veterinarian for a thorough physical exam may help determine if there is an underlying cause and/or extent of vision loss. They All Said I was Crazy for Getting a Pet Door, but Now I Have No Worries! BY JOHN MOYA

hen I first started talking about getting a pet door, friends and family all said I was crazy. “Think of the animals you will be letting in! Think of the thieves that will have easy access to your home. You will not be able to sleep at night knowing that someone could crawl in and do very bad things to you or your family!” Between 3:30 AM and 5:00 AM, I could count on being licked in the face with the sound of whimpering in the background. Sebastian, my Golden, was telling me something…. he needed to go out! Being woken up from a good dream like this was not the way I wanted to spend the rest of Sebastian’s life. Sebastian was left inside in the nice comforts of my home while I was away at work. At that time, I worked at the airport and the daily commute was 35 minutes to my doorstep. This was before all the traffic lights and development on US 281. Upon arrival from work, he would run me over on his way to relieve himself. At times, I would find out that something did not agree with his stomach. An expensive call to Stanley Steamers usually occurred afterwards. 16
I received a phone call at work, “Sebastian ate the carpet—the whole carpet!” I can’t believe that I lived like this for years. I replaced door jambs from him scratching at the door wanting out. I replaced carpet due to his destruction. I have caught him in Kitty’s litter box (Yuck!). I have tried crating him only to give in to his whimpering. The loss of sleep was the last straw! Something had to be done! installed one of the best (if not the best) pet doors on the market that had dual security features and the maximum energy efficiency of any pet door on the market. Sleeping until I had to wake up for work was the biggest satisfaction that I got from it. Even Kitty got a pet door. Her litter box was moved to an empty closet and the poop eating contest was over for Sebastian. I never got an animal in the house that wasn’t supposed to be there. I didn’t have to rush home from work to see if there was a gift waiting for me to clean up. A would be thief would also have to think twice prior to entering. Judging from the pet door size, a German Shepard, Pit Bull, or a Rottweiler could be waiting. My friend’s and family’s concerns never occurred. Your dog needs exercise! •
All dogs need plenty of exercise. If they don’t get it, they will develop bad habits such as chewing on furniture, socks and shoes, or dig up flowerbeds. They may even get depressed, and become really mischievous and unreliable.

Spending 30 minutes to an hour walking to the park with a dog walker, although better than nothing, doesn’t provide much exercise for a pooch, and receiving a picture of where your baby pooped may make you feel better, but it doesn’t do much for your dog.
