contributors LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER Time to celebrate! Six years of service to the pet community of San Antonio. Six years of providing useful and informative information to those who love and cherish their furry children. Six years of connecting pet owners with those businesses that provide goods and services to help accomodate your pet's needs. We hope you, the readers, get as much enjoyment from the magazine as the enjoyment we get putting it all together for you. This issue again is full of interesting topics. As we head into the hot season, Pawderosa Ranch, warns us of the dangers of leaving your dog for even seconds in your car during hot weather. Dr. Caitlin Contreary, of Mission Vet, details the risk of skin infections in dogs and cats this summer. Our pictorial this month features moms and their furry children for Mother's Day. As we blow out the birthday candles, we hope to see you all next month for our annual June wedding spectacular issue. covermodel about our
Noble Legend Von der haus Gill
Meet beautiful Legend! He is a black sable German Shepherd, with deep red undertones, and a black mask. His official name is Noble Legend Von der haus Gill. He is a giant of a dog, in every way! He is 29 inches tall and weighs 102 pounds (he thinks he’s a Great Dane!), so he has a very commanding presence, but he is the sweetest dog you will ever meet! Legend is a workingline German Shepherd, and his lineage is ½ West German, ¼ Czech, and ¼ East German (DDR). His name honors his sire, the legendary Charly Vom Kannhof, who was titled Schutzhund 3, was a competitor in USPC (U.S. Police Canine), was a certified Police K-9 - Patrol/Explosives, served on explosives details with the U.S. Secret Service,
and was awarded the Police Medal of Honor for his work at the World Trade Center on 9/11. Legend is following in his father’s “pawsteps”. He is BHtitled in Schutzhund and is an up-and-coming contender in the sport. And, of course, he has his CGC (Canine Good Citizen) title, as well! Legend is the perfect family pet! He loves to chase a ball (endlessly…) and play in the pool, but his favorite activity is to lay every one of his 102 pounds on your lap and give you kisses! Legend’s owner is Lisa York, the owner of the Sit Means Sit – San Antonio dog training franchise, and a breeder of working-line German Shepherds.

Like the north San Antonio home featured on this issue’s cover, Offerpad is currently buying homes all over the San Antonio metro area and providing the best real estate experiences for you and your pets. Are you thinking about selling your home? The traditional process of working with a realtor and preparing your home beforehand can really bite — especially for your furry friends. As pet fanatics ourselves, we understand it’s not just a dog or a cat — it’s a member of the family. Offerpad’s modern approach to buying and selling homes has many advantages animal lovers will appreciate – and now it’s available to residents in San Antonio as well as Texas’s other large metro areas. Like us, dogs and cats are creatures of habit. They rely on familiar faces and environments to provide a sense of security. Preparing your home to sell can easily pull them away from the comforts of home and make them feel anxious. While accommodating a traditional sale, you

WITH DR. KIRBY OF ALAMO HEIGHTS PET CLINIC Q: What areas of San Antonio should one be extra vigilant about getting snake vaccine? —Thank You, Karen
A: The Suburbs and park areas are the most suspect places in San Antonio for rattlesnake or other venomous snakes. While this is true, we have seen rattlesnake bites in the middle of the city, in regular neighborhoods. The rattlesnake vaccine is a good protector for your dog but not a panacea. You will still have to take your pet to the veterinarian for treatment. The vaccine gives them the protection of approximately one vial of anti-venom. It always pays to be vigilant of where you go with your dogs and have a plan in case your pet gets bitten.
Q: My dog has trouble seeing? If he needs cataract how expensive is the cost and are there other options available? —Thank You, Judy
A: If you dog has trouble seeing, your veterinarian can give him or her a good ophthalmic exam to determine the cause. If it is a cataract problem, your veterinarian will determine if it is in one or both eyes and at what stage the disease is. Sometimes surgery is not required but there is glaucoma or a luxation of the lens (when the lens falls out of normal position) then surgery may be indicated. Surgery can be a good option but would be considered fairly expensive, so exhaust other options first. Dr. Kirby graduated Cum Laude from Texas A&M with a degree in Biomedical Science in 1979 and earned his DVM in 1984. Dr. Kirby has been the owner and director of Alamo Heights Pet Clinic since 1997. His veterinary interests are surgery, internal medicine, ultrasonography, and rehabilitation therapy. He uses both a conventional and a holistic approach to medicine. Dr. Kirby treats dogs, cats, birds and exotics. Alamo Heights Pet Clinic: (210) 821-5544. Please email all questions for Dr. Kirby to Dana.texasdogsandcats@gmail.com.

skininfections in dogs & cats
S
uperficial (surface) skin infections are one of the most commonly seen dermatologic issues in dogs and cats. These infections are usually caused by bacteria and/or yeast. The bacteria and yeast most often responsible for causing superficial skin infections are those found on healthy skin, just in abnormal quantities. As a rule, dogs and cats do not “catch” a bacterial or yeast skin infection from the environment or from another animal. It is also very uncommon for a dog or cat to give this kind of skin infection to a person or another animal.

Don't Leave Your
doginthecar!
I
n central Texas, the sun is shining, the temperature is rising and summer is rapidly approaching. Although summer doesn’t officially begin until June 21, it continues to get hotter sooner, especially down south.
While taking your pup for a ride may seem like a fun idea to get him or her out of the house, make sure you do not leave your dog in the car for any period of time during these heated seasons. Avoid taking risks when it comes to heat. Keep your pet out of an unattended parked car.
BY PAWDEROSA RANCH
It’s Getting Hot In There A car’s temperature will rise approximately 40 degrees Fahrenheit in one hour. In a study published by the journal Pediatrics, researchers found that vehicles heat up rapidly, with the majority of the temperature rise occurring within the first 15 to 30 minutes. They also noted that leaving the windows open slightly does not significantly slow the heating process or decrease the maximum temperature attained. The average high temperatures in San Antonio in the coming months are as follows: May – 86 F June – 91.4 F July – 94.6 F Symptoms of canine hyperthermia / heat stroke include • Panting • Excessive drooling 18
• Increased body temperature • Rapid heart rate • Shock • Sudden breathing distress • Seizures • Muscle tremors • Wobbly, uncoordinated or drunken gait or movement (ataxia) • Unconsciousness in which the dog cannot be stimulated to be awakened If you see an animal in a car exhibiting any signs of heat stress, call your local animal care and control agency or police department immediately. If you are a local or transplant Texan, you know that late spring and summer become horrendously hot. Don’t expose your pet to the dangers of heat stress when you leave him in a car, even for “just a minute.” If you are running an errand, simply leave your pet at home. Animals can suffer brain damage in just 15 minutes if left unattended in a hot car.

Your dog needs exercise! •
All dogs need plenty of exercise. If they don’t get it, they will develop bad habits such as chewing on furniture, socks and shoes, or dig up flowerbeds. They may even get depressed, and become really mischievous and unreliable.
•
Spending 30 minutes to an hour walking to the park with a dog walker, although better than nothing, doesn’t provide much exercise for a pooch, and receiving a picture of where your baby pooped may make you feel better, but it doesn’t do much for your dog.
Introducing Pet Galaxy’s Doggieland® Daycare and Door to Door Service •
For roughly the same money you would spend on 30 minutes for a dog walker’s time, we will pick up your fur-babies from your home in the morning, transport them to Pet Galaxy’s large Doggieland® play park for the entire day, where they can enjoy the park and play with compatible, like-minded dogs. Once they have experienced enough play, they will come inside for an all-important nap before they go back out for more fun again. At the end of the day, we will bring your happy and satisfied babies back home.
•
Prices start at $24.75 for all day daycare plus $5.00 each way for the bus ticket — flat rate. Our initial target areas are primarily neighborhoods north of Loop 1604 along the Hwy 281 corridor, including Stone Oak, Encino, Canyon Springs, Timberwood Park, Johnson Ranch and Bulverde/Spring Branch.
•
On request — for an extra charge, we can even serve lunch and/or dinner, administer medications, provide Bath, Brush and Nails service and/or a full groom.
•
And, of course, if needed — your pet is always welcome to spend the night (or longer stays) with us.
