id you know September was National Suicide Prevention month? I did not, until a friend of mine posted it on her Facebook page……just 4 days before she took her life. Those who knew her only had one single piece to the puzzle of her pain. And only after, did we realize by putting them together there were signs.

{October 2019}

dogs rescued out of local shelters and the hundreds of inmates who. By going through this program will learn, rehabilitate, and grow into productive members of society. With no large backer, just small collections, Miss G. was always 6 months away from shutting down. That weighed very heavy on her and THAT needs to change. I know there are readers out there who have foundations or charities that can help. I implore you to look into PAWS in Prison in Lockhart, TX. Those women and the dogs we rescue are saving each other EVERY DAY! If we can keep this from happening to just one other person, isn’t it worth getting involved?! You can find more information about this incredible program through me at K9 Country Club 830-9808476 or by visiting www.pawsinprison.com . We can always use donations, fundraisers, public awareness, and volunteers. If we continue to save the lives of not only these dog’s but the women who care for them, Miss G’s legacy will live on forever! Thank You for letting me share, Catherine Laria

BY CATHERINE LARIA

The one thing we all knew my friend had was an incredible passion for saving dogs. So much so, that she started the PAWS in Prison program, now thriving at the Lockhart Women’s Correctional Facility. Over the last 15 years they’ve found forever homes for over 300 dogs! This program was Miss G’s life and light. It was how I knew her so I always saw her surrounded by that love and joy. It’s so sad that she suffered dark times where that light wasn’t enough to hold on to for another day. As with many tragedies, silver linings tend to appear. I had to step up and take on not only the training portion of the program, which I was already volunteering for, but the administration of the inmates who were part of it. By spending so much time there I can see clearly now how special this program really is. The girls of 1Charlie are grieving but strong. Together with the Warden’s support and the NonProfit’s passion (Friends of Paws in Prison), the girls and all those involved want to make sure this amazing program Miss G. began does not die with her. What I was told by most of the women there or paroled, is that Miss G. and the PAWS program saved their lives, literally. Ironically many who contemplated suicide themselves felt saved by Miss G. and the dogs they worked with. Many have gone on to have wonderful stable jobs in the animal industry. And as far as I know, only one has found themselves back in this prison. WOW, what an accomplishment! After volunteering for the last two years I’m convinced this program needs to survive for the many

PARVOVIRUS P

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

arvovirus…are you familiar with this deadly virus? Can it be treated? What does that mean for your new puppy at home? What precautions can you take to prevent the virus? I will try to answer these questions and more below to help keep your pooch safe this year.

What is parvovirus? Parvovirus is an extremely contagious viral disease found in the environment that can easily be transmitted from one dog to another. This disease damages both the gastrointestinal tract and the white blood cells found in the bone marrow. Signs typically start with vomiting and then in one to two days, lead to bloody diarrhea and lethargy. A dog can contract parvoviral infection from the environment. It is more likely that an unvaccinated pet will contract the virus although vaccinated pets and immunocompromised pets can also contract the disease. Many dogs die from complications associated with parvovirus and sepsis if left untreated. Dogs become severely dehydrated from vomiting and diarrhea and have problems with their blood pressure, blood sugar levels and blood protein levels. How do we treat it? Treatment for parvoviral infection centers on medical support and nursing care. This means that the clinical problems that come up in the course of the infection are addressed individually (anti-nausea medication, nasogastric tube feeding, intravenous antibiotics for secondary infections, diarrhea medication). We do not have effective anti-viral medications for dogs and must rely on the patient’s immune system. Your pet will require continued care at your veterinarian’s office. Hospitalization is ideal, and this can be quite expensive. There is a much better chance of recovery and survival with hospitalization under a veterinarian’s care.

BY HANNAH FORE, DVM

Can it be prevented? What precautions should I take? When you get a new puppy, your veterinarian will recommend they be vaccinated for parvovirus. Typically, this is a combination vaccination that includes protection against canine distemper, parvovirus, adenovirus, and parainfluenza. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) recommends beginning vaccinations as early as 6 weeks of age. Boosters should be given at intervals of 2-4 weeks until 14

of at least 16 weeks of age. In highrisk areas such as San Antonio, your veterinarian may recommend a final booster be given at 20 weeks of age. Full guidelines can be found on the AAHA website. No vaccination is 100%; however, judicious vaccination in puppies can greatly reduce the chance of your dog contracting the disease. Some people wonder why so many boosters are needed. Puppies receive maternal antibodies from their mother at birth, however lose that immunity at varying ages. In most dogs, they are completely gone by 14 weeks old. Boosters are given at specific intervals to help puppies build their own immunity against these deadly virus’. If vaccinations are given too early, maternal antibodies will block their effectiveness, therefore it is important to talk to your family veterinarian to set up a booster schedule that is best for your pet. Certain precautions can be taken to lessen the chance they contract the virus. Until your dog is fully vaccinated, I recommend avoiding places like doggy daycare, dog parks, or pet friendly malls/social areas. If you notice signs of vomiting, diarrhea, inappetence or lethargy it is best to take your puppy or unvaccinated dog to the vet to be evaluated as soon as possible. Dr. Hannah Fore is an emergency veterinarian at MissionVet Specialty & Emergency. She chose to become a veterinarian because it combined her love of animals with her interest in medical diagnostics. With a passion for emergency and critical care medicine, she enjoys working in the intensive care unit. Dr. Fore is particularly interested in wound management, toxicities, and urethral obstructions. One of Dr. Fore’s favorite pastimes is attending St. Louis Cardinals baseball games with her husband. In addition to kickboxing and going to the movies, she enjoys spending time with her husband, son and dogs, Lexi and Ozzie.

O

ctober is National Pit Bull Awareness Month. Here’s what we think you should know about this common type of dog.

Breed Does Not Predict Bites Like any other dog type, a pit bull dog’s temperament and personality are often shaped by their training, relationships, and experiences. Multiple studies have demonstrated reported dog bites are not disproportionately caused by pit bull dogs. Pit bulls may receive a larger amount of negative attention from the media due to the damage their bites can cause. Contrary to the popular myth, pit bulls do not have “locking jaws.” Although their well-developed facial muscles and strong jaws suggest a pit bull bite could be serious, according to the American Temperament Test Society, which conducts temperament tests of dogs, you’re more likely to have a negative interaction with a Chihuahua or Shih Tzu. Mixed Breed Dogs Are Often Mislabeled As Pit Bulls Most nonprofits do not have the time, nor funds, to DNA test each pet that comes under its care. The San

{October 2019}

Antonio Humane Society (SAHS) receives thousands of pets each year and must rely on physical traits to identify a potential dog breed. But the fact of the matter is this: in our community, with an overwhelming pet overpopulation problem, the majority of pets coming into our care are mixed breeds—heavy on the “mixed.” Many strays are not spayed/neutered, litters can be sired by more than one male dog, and although you may think you know the breed of a pup’s mom or dad, each puppy is capable of encompassing the genes and traits of ALL the breeds in its heritage. That means there could be two to two dozen breeds in their ancestry.

BY VERONICA PEREZ, SAN ANTONIO HUMANE SOCIETY

Pit Bull Is a Type, Not a Breed The name “pit bull” is a common label given to four recognized pedigree breeds: American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, American Bully, and Staffordshire Bull Terrier. These distinctions are often made in observation of their physical characteristics (square-shaped head or bulky body type), and not their personality traits.

Pit Bull Dogs Are More Likely to Become Homeless Because Pit Bull type dogs are often the victims of breed-specific legislation, housing restrictions, and baseless myths, they are often overlooked or left behind in animal shelters. At the SAHS, pit bull dogs remain in our care statistically longer than dogs identified as retrievers, terriers, or shepherds. This is despite the fact that many of these dogs share similar characteristics: they’re active, they’re playful, and they’re loving. As the old adage goes: don’t judge a book by its cover. Visit the SAHS and meet our adoptable dogs face-toface. Talk to our kennel staff and volunteers who know them best. Each pet in our care is as unique as the family who is looking to take them home.

They All Said I was Crazy for Getting a Pet Door, but Now I Have No Worries! BY JOHN MOYA

W

hen I first started talking about getting a pet door, friends and family all said I was crazy. “Think of the animals you will be letting in! Think of the thieves that will have easy access to your home. You will not be able to sleep at night knowing that someone could crawl in and do very bad things to you or your family!” Between 3:30 AM and 5:00 AM, I could count on being licked in the face with the sound of whimpering in the background. Sebastian, my Golden, was telling me something…. he needed to go out! Being woken up from a good dream like this was not the way I wanted to spend the rest of Sebastian’s life. Sebastian was left inside in the nice comforts of my home while I was away at work. At that time, I worked at the airport and the daily commute was 35 minutes to my doorstep. This was before all the traffic lights and development on US 281. Upon arrival from work, he would run me over on his way to relieve himself. At times, I would find out that something did not agree with his stomach. An expensive call to Stanley Steamers usually occurred afterwards. 16

I received a phone call at work, “Sebastian ate the carpet—the whole carpet!” I can’t believe that I lived like this for years. I replaced door jambs from him scratching at the door wanting out. I replaced carpet due to his destruction. I have caught him in Kitty’s litter box (Yuck!). I have tried crating him only to give in to his whimpering. The loss of sleep was the last straw! Something had to be done! installed one of the best (if not the best) pet doors on the market that had dual security features and the maximum energy efficiency of any pet door on the market. Sleeping until I had to wake up for work was the biggest satisfaction that I got from it. Even Kitty got a pet door. Her litter box was moved to an empty closet and the poop eating contest was over for Sebastian. I never got an animal in the house that wasn’t supposed to be there. I didn’t have to rush home from work to see if there was a gift waiting for me to clean up. A would be thief would also have to think twice prior to entering. Judging from the pet door size, a German Shepard, Pit Bull, or a Rottweiler could be waiting. My friend’s and family’s concerns never occurred. If these events sound familiar, and you would like to stop the worries and stress over your pets, you may receive free information on the type of pet door that I installed. You may contact us directly at 210-464-8953 or by email at john@alamodogdoors.com. Some of your neighbors may alreadybe satisfied customers and I am sure that they would speak highly of their pet door and our installation services.

Q: My chow mix was running outside and broke a nail. It bled for a while and then stopped. Do I need to bring him in to the vet? —Thanks, Jenny A: A broken nail usually is okay, it depends on where it is broken. If the nail is still present, have your vet remove it, (typically done with light sedation). If necessary, antibiotics may be prescribed. A nail broken at the base that is already gone and has stopped bleeding can be cleaned with water and checked daily until healed. If there is swelling of the toe have your veterinarian examine it. Q: Have you ever had a dog that was seen for intestinal inflammation caused by fragments of

an antler chew being ingested? Or any issues in regards to antler chews? —Thanks, Hilary A: I have yet to see intestinal inflammation cases associated with deer, elk or moose antlers. The concern for me with antlers, rawhides and hooves are choking and breaking teeth. I always tell owners to monitor their pets when giving a hard chew. Once the pet has chewed the item down to a piece that can be easily swallowed, take it away and throw it out. Before purchasing any antler or chew, do a little online research and find a brand that is highly rated and does not split or splinter Dr. Kirby graduated Cum Laude from Texas A&M with a degree in Biomedical Science in 1979 and earned his DVM in 1984. very year October 16th is Global Cat Day. One of the ways we celebrate this day is writing an article for this magazine to bring awareness to the overpopulation of cats in San Antonio. This year we’ve seen more litters of kittens born than ever before. Our Helpline calls almost doubled with 80% of them involving kittens. Requests for help included kittens that were abandoned by mom, kittens orphaned when mom was killed searching for food, or boxes of kittens dumped at someone’s door. At one point our small adoption program had over 350 kittens in foster care! There simply are not enough fosters and shelter space in San Antonio to house the thousands of kittens that are out there; so they are born to either suffer and die, or suffer and reproduce. We will never be able to adopt our way out of this kitten crisis. When adoption is not an option, more actions need to be taken. We must stop the growing numbers of ALL cats, inside and out, friendly or feral, by spaying and neutering. For pets, there are many clinics in San Antonio that offer low cost spay/neuter. For community cats (outside cats), the San Antonio Feral Cat Coalition (SAFCC) can help get these cats fixed. Thankfully, many people have responded to the kitten explosion in their neighborhoods by attending our free TrapNeuter-Return (TNR) Class to prevent further litters. What can you do to help? If you have room, you could consider opening your home to a new pet. Every

adoption makes room for another cat or kitten to be rescued off the streets. If you don’t want a long-term commitment, you could foster. Most foster programs provide food, litter and medical care. You provide a loving home. If you are feeding outside cats that are not fixed, we can help you! People are surprised when they find out they can get traps on loan and get their cats spayed, neutered, and vaccinated – all for free! Please join us as we work to make San Antonio a more humane city for our community cats and to prevent the suffering of innocent kittens. For more information on how you can help with San Antonio’s kitten crisis and find a list of low cost spay/neuter clinics, go to our website at sanantonioferalcats.org or call our Helpline at 210-877- 9067. We appreciate your support and for caring about our community cats!

Your dog needs exercise! •

All dogs need plenty of exercise. If they don’t get it, they will develop bad habits such as chewing on furniture, socks and shoes, or dig up flowerbeds. They may even get depressed, and become really mischievous and unreliable.

Spending 30 minutes to an hour walking to the park with a dog walker, although better than nothing, doesn’t provide much exercise for a pooch, and receiving a picture of where your baby pooped may make you feel better, but it doesn’t do much for your dog.

Introducing Pet Galaxy’s Doggieland® Daycare and Door to Door Service •

For roughly the same money you would spend on 30 minutes for a dog walker’s time, we will pick up your fur-babies from your home in the morning, transport them to Pet Galaxy’s large Doggieland® play park for the entire day, where they can enjoy the park and play with compatible, like-minded dogs. Once they have experienced enough play, they will come inside for an all-important nap before they go back out for more fun again. At the end of the day, we will bring your happy and satisfied babies back home.

Prices start at $24.75 for all day daycare plus $5.00 each way for the bus ticket — flat rate. Our initial target areas are primarily neighborhoods north of Loop 1604 along the Hwy 281 corridor, including Stone Oak, Encino, Canyon Springs, Timberwood Park, Johnson Ranch and Bulverde/Spring Branch.

On request — for an extra charge, we can even serve lunch and/or dinner, administer medications, provide Bath, Brush and Nails service and/or a full groom.

And, of course, if needed — your pet is always welcome to spend the night (or longer stays) with us.
