T
oki and I met in February of 2000 when she jumped up and grabbed onto my sweatshirt sleeve. All I could see were her little black, bug eyes staring at me over my chomped-on arm. “Will you be my Valentine?” she implored with her eyes. I accepted and we were inseparable from that day on.
BY CHRISTY MYHRE, TOKI’S MOM
In 2006, Toki was diagnosed with a mast cell tumor. After several tests and 2 surgeries, Toki came home with what we refer to as her 6" tummy tuck, wearing an aqua blue body stocking to hold all of the stitches in place. As I watched her lying in a sunbeam with a frozen bag of corn on her belly, I promised Toki her very own website once she recovered. Several days later, her biopsy results came back with clean margins, deeming her cancerfree. HURRAY! We had many brainstorming sessions about her website that went hand in hand with daily walks and belly rubs. During a meeting with my sports trading card clients, it occurred to me that I couldn’t truly relate to their industry since I’m not a big sport fan. It should be no surprise that my thoughts wandered… the idea sparked… and the light bulb turned on! PET TRADING CARDS! So with this crazy idea, Toki and I set out to build her website and officially launched TokiPoki.com in 2010. To celebrate, I put away the computer, put everything in storage and Toki and I jumped in the car, leaving Los Angeles for a cross-country road trip that lasted five months. To promote TokiPoki.com, we visited pet stores, crashed pet parties and hung out at dog parks nationwide. In Rhode Island, we met 11-year-old Ryan Agnew, who recruited at least 60 pets in his neighborhood! It was Ryan, a recent liver transplant patient, who suggested Toki Poki® pet trading cards be delivered to kids in hospitals. Toki agreed and so began our passion of “Pet 8

Trading Cards with a Purpose.” During our adventures, Toki handed out her trading card and became friends with every one she met… whether it was on the streets of New York City, the sands of Santa Barbara, or the mountains of North Carolina. Pet trading cards became a great way for pets and their people to connect in a fun and memorable way. Toki loved nothing more than to make children smile. Her small Boston Terrier frame did not match her big-dog personality. Over the years, she transformed into canine cancer superhero, “My-T-Dog,” winning many battles with canine cancer. Her resilience and loving nature were her super powers! After our journey, we settled in my Texas hometown and established the Toki Poki® Petquarters. Toki welcomed over a thousand members representing 42 states, 10 countries and, to date, has delivered over 350,000 pet trading cards to children in hospitals nationwide. Toki succumbed to her 10-year battle with cancer in 2015. She is not forgotten and continues to be the soul and strength of Toki Poki®, bringing smiles to kids of all ages. Although Toki traded in her superhero cape for beautiful angel wings, she is remembered for her loving spirit and willingness to be the crusader against canine cancer and the inspiration for Toki Poki® “Pet Trading Cards with a Purpose.” Visit TokiPoki.com to order your pet's personalized trading card and help Toki spread smiles nationwide!

sportsmedicine: not just for people anymore
S
ports-related injuries are a common occurrence for people, and an accepted part of the risk associated with sports. The risk of injury is much the same for our pets, even if the “sport” is playing fetch!
BY TIGE WITSBERGER, DVM, DACVS
The owners of Duke, a young Labrador Retriever, experienced this firsthand when he was chasing a Frisbee and trotted back limping on his right rear leg. After a trip to the vet and a round of pain medication with no improvement, Duke was referred to an orthopedic specialist, who diagnosed a torn cranial cruciate ligament (CCL); a very similar injury to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in humans. Duke’s knee was surgically stabilized and after a couple of months, Duke was back to chasing Frisbees. This type of story is more common than most pet owners realize. Every pet has a different level of regular activity, depending on their personality, age, body condition, and health. The upper tier of activity includes the “professional” pet athletes – agility animals, flyball dogs, and herding dogs. The majority of our pets, however, fall into the “weekend warrior” category. These animals look forward to weekends at the dog park, playing fetch, or a long jog. Even pets who settle into a more sedentary category can experience a sports injury. In fact, a dog who is typically inactive can be at an increased risk for injury if he suddenly breaks into a sprint after a squirrel. The most common sports-related injuries are orthopedic. Ligament tears like Duke’s are one of the most prevalent, but elbow and shoulder injuries, hip problems, fractures, herniated spinal discs, and dislocated joints are also common. With young dogs, you can also see growth abnormalities. For any suspected injury, see your family veterinarian for an evaluation as soon as possible. Some injuries, like spinal damage, can be timesensitive and have a short window of opportunity to give your pet the best chance for recovery. For other injuries, your family veterinarian may recommend a consultation with a board-certified surgeon. 10
Arthroscopy can now be used to treat many injuries with minimal discomfort for the patient. Shoulder ligament injuries, elbow bone chips, tarsal (ankle) and hip injuries, and even dysplasia can be treated with minimally invasive arthroscopy. More severe problems in joints can be treated with a total joint replacement procedure. No matter what your pet’s level of activity, there is a risk for sports-related injuries. Keep your pet in good body condition to give them the best tools for a healthy, injury-free life, and monitor them closely for any signs of lameness, difficulty going up and down stairs, abnormal gait, or stiffness. Check with your family veterinarian if you suspect your pet has a sports-related injury to determine what treatment or type of surgical intervention may be necessary to get your pet back to playing fetch, competing, or squirrel chasing! Dr. Tige Witsberger is a board-certified small animal surgeon and Hospital Director at MissionVet Specialty & Emergency. He graduated summa cum laude from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2006. After graduation, Dr. Witsberger completed a oneyear small animal rotating internship at the University of Missouri. He then completed his three-year small animal surgical residency at Texas A&M University. Dr. Witsberger has special interest in minimally invasive surgery including arthroscopy, laparoscopy and thoracoscopy as well as minimally invasive fracture repair.

he beginning of every new year marks the perfect time to hit the reset button on all the things you promised yourself you would do last year but didn’t get around to. And resolving to make the coming year a better one can be can be daunting if you’re doing it alone. We all know that goals are always easier and more fun to attain if you include your best friend – what you might not know is that they are especially fun if your best friend is your dog.
BY JODI ANDERSEN, CO-FOUNDER, HOW I MET MY DOG
Here are some resolutions that can involve your dog in ways you might not have considered (but should!): Take a long walk – Overindulging during the holidays isn’t just reserved for people. With all those scraps falling to the floor, dogs tend to put on a few pounds too. This year, make a New Year’s resolution to include your dog in your own exercise routine and you will not only both feel better and healthier, you and your pup will also bond on those long walks. Learn a new language – Every time you teach your dog a new command, you’re not only boosting your dog’s self-confidence, you’re deepening the level of communication you and your dog have with each other. The more commands your dog understands, the easier it is for your dog to understand what you want (e.g., sit, down, come, stay, etc.) And the more your dog does what you say, the happier you will be with your dog. Throw a treat and some praise into each lesson, and your dog will be fluent in no time. Read a good book – With so much company coming in and out of the house during the holiday
18
season, your dog might be feeling the need for a little one-onone time. The easiest way to reconnect is to simply grab your morning paper (and your dog) and read at least one story, out loud, every day. Just hearing the sound of your voice helps your dog feel closer to you and reminds him that he is still an important member of your pack. Go out to dinner – Depending on the weather, of course, eat at least one meal every couple of weeks in an outdoor café, and bring your dog. And now that your pup is learning a new language, what better way to practice. Bring along a soft, travel bed, put it under the table, and ask your dog to “down.” Including your dog in your social activities might seem like a chore but every time you do it, your dog is learning how to be well behaved in a social situation. And who doesn’t love a dog that gets invited out to dinner? Unlike the many, well-intended new year promises that you try but never end up keeping, these New Year’s resolutions will not only make you feel better about yourself, they will take your relationship with your best friend to the next level. Resolving to spend more time with your dog is a win-win!

WITH DR. KIRBY OF ALAMO HEIGHTS PET CLINIC Q: My apartment won't allow dogs or cats, only birds. Which breed would you recommend that would have the least health problems?
A: If you are considering a bird, I would recommend you start with a smaller breed. Cockatiels, Canaries or Parakeets are great birds to own. Cockatiels and canaries have a lifespan of 10-15 years, and parakeets have a lifespan of 5-8 years. These smaller birds can be very personable and friendly. Before choosing, I recommend you research those bird’s nutrition and environmental needs before purchasing one.
Q: How can I tell if my dog has kidney stones? He seems not to urinate as much? A: To diagnose kidney stones your veterinarian will x-ray and ultrasound your pet’s kidneys and the urinary bladder. After they have been diagnosed, your vet will want to determine the cause and develop a treatment plan.

Your dog needs exercise! •
All dogs need plenty of exercise. If they don’t get it, they will develop bad habits such as chewing on furniture, socks and shoes, or dig up flowerbeds. They may even get depressed, and become really mischievous and unreliable.
•
Spending 30 minutes to an hour walking to the park with a dog walker, although better than nothing, doesn’t provide much exercise for a pooch, and receiving a picture of where your baby pooped may make you feel better, but it doesn’t do much for your dog.
Introducing Pet Galaxy’s Doggieland® Daycare and Door to Door Service •
For roughly the same money you would spend on 30 minutes for a dog walker’s time, we will pick up your fur-babies from your home in the morning, transport them to Pet Galaxy’s large Doggieland® play park for the entire day, where they can enjoy the park and play with compatible, like-minded dogs. Once they have experienced enough play, they will come inside for an all-important nap before they go back out for more fun again. At the end of the day, we will bring your happy and satisfied babies back home.
•
Prices start at $24.75 for all day daycare plus $5.00 each way for the bus ticket — flat rate. Our initial target areas are primarily neighborhoods north of Loop 1604 along the Hwy 281 corridor, including Stone Oak, Encino, Canyon Springs, Timberwood Park, Johnson Ranch and Bulverde/Spring Branch.
•
On request — for an extra charge, we can even serve lunch and/or dinner, administer medications, provide Bath, Brush and Nails service and/or a full groom.
•
And, of course, if needed — your pet is always welcome to spend the night (or longer stays) with us.
