BREEDER PROFILE
How did you get into the Mini’s? Steve Splitt and I bought 160 acres North Of North Platte Ne. What do you do with 160 acres you can’t run very many full size cows. Steve refused to have llamas, ostrichs, etc. He wanted to have something if it didn’t work out we could always eat them. We looked at the lowlines but Steve liked the confirmation better on the Herefords. That was 20+ years ago. Now Mr. Splitt has passed away and Shaun and Kily Brott my daughter and son-in-law pretty well run the operation. Kily is ranch manager, vet, record keeper, calve out the cows, just about everything that calls for caring and feeding and caring of the animals. Shaun does all the haying and does most of the sales. It has truly been a family affair. When we started at the Thanksgiving table I ask my nephew if he and his wife Cheri would help us show the animals where both had show experience in 4H and one into college. Marty and Cheri Lashley and their kids Colt and Cameron have traveled the whole 20 years. I have watched my kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, all come to the shows and help and show animals for us. It’s a ride that I wish more could enjoy and the mini’s are the perfect size and personality to do it with.
Are they Mini Herefords?
MINI MAFIA l SPRING 2021
When Kenny and Alli Peterson decided to introduce the smaller cattle to the world they chose the name Mini…. Some are
4
fitting into that name where some buyers want the less than 30” cow and there is a nitch for them in the market. Steve Splitt my husband when we decided we were going the smaller framed cows wanted a size that could be a good market piece with a nice size of meat. Most of our cows I try to keep in the 45” range and most weigh from 750 to 900. My Son in law Shaun Brott says I keep mine too fat. That’s the way I like them. Most of ours when we go the shows and the older cattlemen tell me that mine are the size that they grew up with in the 50’s and 60’s. I feel ours are of the original size Herefords that they bred them up to the sizes they are now. Some full size Herefords are 1600 to 2000 lbs. that’s just too big for our small operation and willingness to work with those huge animals.
and horned the best product we can offer. This is our trying to mate the best bulls either horned or polled with the best female. Trial and error is a big gamble in the cattle world. We have had some ugly bulls that have produces some of our Champions. We have some of our old faithful lines that year after year we have offspring that amaze us.
How many cows do you run? Between cows, bulls, heifers we average …… We calve twice a year in the spring and the fall. When we started we loved to show so with having different age groups allowed us to have calves in more classes. Most of the classes were always bigger in the spring so I wanted to have fall babies to compete.
Do you breed polled or horned Mini Herefords? We have both polled and horned. We are working very hard to keep both our polled
How broad is your customer base? I was trying to think of a state that has not bought cattle from us. The Internet has made the world of marketing an open book. When we started we did a lot of shows that I think helped us spread the information about the Mini’s. In the beginning the big question when we went to a show was “what do you do with them.” Now I can’t
cont. pg. 4 remember a person asking that. We have been to the Cow Palace in San Francisco; Louisville, Kentucky; Houston, Texas; Austin, Texas; Sacramento, California; Kansas City, Missouri; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Des Moines, Iowa; Denver, Colorado and our state fair Lincoln, Nebraska.
As a breeder what are your greatest achievements?
What would you say to someone thinking about raising Mini Herefords?
When we started back in 2000 the animals looked a lot different than what they do today. The breeding has come a long way. In the beginning the animals were clipped and presented as little teddy bears with fuzzy faces. Our vet said he would not clip our animals unless we were going to have them look like Herefords. That trend and continued to improve. We have bred to lengthen the fronts and clean them up. We prefer the longer faces, wide square back ends. It’s a continual work in progress.
Buy the best you can afford. Get someone to help you that knows what a good cow or bull looks like. Take advantage of the progress that breed has taken. It takes the same amount of money to raise a good one as a cheap one. There are a lot of especially bulls out there that should have been steers. We must keep pushing for quality to progress the breed and make the cattlemen of the world respect us. Just because they are smaller they should have the best confirmation, feet, movement of any bovine. That’s how the mini’s will be respected and its growing all the time.
What has been the biggest key to the success of Splitt Creek?
MINI MAFIA l SPRING 2021
I feel our repeat business tells us we must be doing something right. Treating people fair is what we try the hardest at. We have all prices of animals. We have the entry level calves that make great cows to start a herd as well as we have sold Grand Champions. We can’t keep all the good ones and we are most proud of our lines go on to do well. When we see one of ours in front of a banner it’s all worth it.

n 2015 Kennedy Kauffman, daughter of Ericka and Travis Kauffman, entered the show ring with a light weight shorthorn steer at the Fort Worth Livestock Show. Kennedy did an amazing job showing her steer named “Magic,” though she fell short on getting him branded. He was brought home, sheared off and would go on to be branded as a second place steer in San Antonio. I witnessed that 9 year old, little girl show with poise and experience, that show ring experience came from the Miniature Herefords she had been exhibiting since she was 6 years old. Kennedy and her family own and operate KenKo Miniature Herefords in Hitchcock, Texas, where they have raised and shown multiple champions. The Miniature Hereford breed would be the gateway to her love and passion for showing cattle. This breed gives pre- junior exhibitors the experience and confidence to transition to their junior show career with “standard sized” cattle at an astounding level. Miniature Herefords allow those young exhibitors to have those show ring experience most will not have the age of 9 years of age. The exposure to this atmosphere earlier in life makes a huge impact on
their future. The spark of showing Miniature Herefords has fueled a passion in Kennedy. She loves being in the barn and working show calves daily. Kennedy transitioned to her junior show career and hit the ground running, while still exhibiting Miniature Herefords occasionally. While initially she showed more market steers, she has shifted her focus to Chianina, Maine- Anjou and Maintainer females.
“The Miniature Hereford breed would be the gateway to her love and passion for showing cattle” Kennedy has had much success in the Maine- Anjou breed at the Texas Majors in the last 3 years. The accolades of this 16-year-old lady has accumulated over the years would not progressed so rapidly without the lessons learned from those short legged, red and white cows. In 2018 the Kauffman family raised and showed the champion Miniature Hereford bull, KK Mr. Top Gun Maverick, at the Houston Livestock Show and the same year Kennedy showed the Reserve Champion Open Maine- Anjou female. Since then Kennedy grown as a person and showman. She has exhibited the
Champion Maine- Anjou female at the 2019 San Antonio Livestock Show and receiving her first $10,000 scholarship. 2021 has been big year for this young lady with having champion MaineAnjou female at San Angelo and San Antonio, maxing out her scholarship winnings from S.A.L.E., while having Reserve Champion honors at Cowgirls in Cowtown and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Outside of showing she is also a member National Honor Society was elected as the secretary of the Texas Junior Maine- Anjou Association. This young lady enjoys sharing her passion with others, especially the younger exhibitors. It’s not uncommon seeing her help pre- junior showman in and out of the ring. Kennedy is a hard working individual that sets her mind to the things she wants the most, the lessons Miniature Herefords have taught her keep her going. Her goals include attending Texas A&M University and perusing a career in embryology upon graduating.
