he Mini Mafia Business was established in 2016 and

has recently been purchased by John and Cassie Henkhaus of San Angelo, TX. John and Cassie are excited about this new adventure and bringing you the latest information about Mini Hereford’s and Agriculture opportunities for you and your business. Cassie stated, “This is an exploding industry with very little space to advertise and we look forward to helping breeders and businesses do just that while helping those interested find what they are looking for.” The Mini Mafia Magazine is expected to be published twice a year and you can expect your first issue by early spring followed by a fall issue. The Mini Mafia Magazine will be following the Mini Hereford exhibitors and Breeders across the Country in 2020 to approved shows. The Mini Magazine will honor an award to one Heifer, Steer, Bull, and Breeder of the year from the show season that includes the Mini Hereford breed over the approved shows. The awards will be announced during the National Western Livestock show, 2021 in Denver, Co. In addition to these major shows, Mini Mafia Magazine will be also hosting a show in a central location that will be announced through social media, so make sure you are following Mini Mafia through Facebook for all the latest news. The Henkhaus Family are no strangers to the livestock industry but the fact is, it’s their passion. They want to help Breeders and Exhibitors excel in their programs and spread the word about the Mini Hereford Breed. John grew up in the show industry and pulled Cassie quickly into what would become a family affair after their marriage. Now for over a decade they have raised show goats together and eventually ventured into the Mini Hereford arena. Mallie and Preslie are the seven year old twin daughters of John and Cassie and they have made quite a splash in the show arena themselves, but more importantly have found their own passion for the industry.

BREEDER PROFILE

Why did you choose to start raising Mini Hereford’s

Darrin Barbour KLD Mini Herfeords, Ranch Mngr.

What’s your Education background? BS in Animal Science Business from Kansas State University

How much land does KLD cover? We operate on roughly 800 acres, 200 hay and 600 pasture.

How many cows do you run? Currently we have 20 Mini Hereford cows and enough commercial cows around to have 50 ET Mini Herefords per year (100120 cows), plus background steers.

What is your background in the cattle business?

4

I grew up in my family’s purebred Simmental operation. I was very active in the Jr Simmental Association as a child, it’s one of the best programs I’ve ever been involved with. During my college years I was lucky enough to live and work at the Purebred Beef Unit for Kansas State where we ran Angus, Simmental and Herefords. The last 22 years I’ve worked for the Steve Sanders family, mostly running Simmental and SimAngus™, that was until about 2011, when we started incorporating Mini Herefords into the fold, doing business as KLD Mini Hereford’s (the initials of his first 3 grandchildren, Kodie Lee, Karsen Lee and Kanyen Lee Dopps).

I can take zero credit for the reason we are raising Mini Herefords! In fact, I actually was dead set against it, and fought my boss for a couple years about it! It all started in Louisville, we would be there showing our Simmental cattle and had to be in the barn for 9 days back then so we had plenty of down time at the show. For years Mr. Sanders would go walking through the Mini Herfs and come back to our stalls and say he was going to buy a Mini for his Grandkids to start them off showing cattle…this same story happened for about 3 years! Then that 3rd year when he came back and said he found 2 Mini Heifers and he was going back to buy them I knew I better get on board quick If I wanted any say in this venture! After calving out our first cows in 2012, we took our best heifer to Louisville in our Simmental string, every kid (and parent) said they wanted one, I then quickly got on board and told Mr Sanders “if we had 25 of these things I bet we could sell them”. Now we will have over 50 ET heifers/ year. Simply put the best way to get youth involved in showing cattle!

How did you get your start in the Mini Herefords? After looking at the two heifers we found for sale at the show in Louisville, I thought we might be able to get more bang for our buck some other place, heck we just decided 30 seconds earlier we were going to be in the Mini Hereford business, so we pumped the breaks a bit on those two at the show but found a sale in Iowa that was held at a Community College, they were putting on a Dispersal Sale for a lady who lived in upstate New York and had passed away. We went to the sale, identified the 4 best cows and bought them! That’s how it got started, 4 bred cows! Our most influential purchase was definitely at the KAP Dispersion I believe the fall of 2012, when we bought KAP Cady Sampson ET. Our best cow at

that time was Rae Lynn, we had just won Louisville with a Orson x Rae Lynn heifer calf a day before the sale. We follow cow families big time at KLD! If you spend 5 minutes with Steve or myself you’ll hear it 10 times probably! In that sale I can recall there was 4 cows that went back to a cow LS Miss MT Nugget 62, the dam of our best cow at the time Rae Lynn. They appeared to us to be the best cows in the sale, so we bought every cow we could that went back to that Nugget cow. In that group of cows just happened to be the greatest producing cow the breed has ever seen, KAP Cady Sampson. We didn’t know it at the time, we just knew the consistency of the cow family was better than the rest! It’s all a gamble, but we always try to invest where there is a long track record of success, we feel it’s a whole lot less of a risk!

What was your biggest challenge you have faced in breeding Mini Hereford’s? Before we ever calved our first Mini Hereford, I wanted to study the breed before we got deeper in, I hadn’t seen but a couple I actually studied for any length of time. We had heard the show in Houston was good show and had a good number of Minis entered, so we bought me a plane ticket and I was off to Houston. I walked around for 3 days, studying the cattle, studying pedigrees and talking to the breeders. It didn’t take me long to figure out some places the breed needed to improve on. Structural Soundness was the biggie! Rear Pasterns were just way to straight on many of the cattle and that’s something we just can’t live with, if you can’t walk at 9 months how can you expect to walk at 12 years of age! Second thing I found that needed some attention was femininity, to many of the show heifers had short thick necks and were the farthest thing from “eye appealing”. The Third biggest challenge we have faced has been increasing the udder quality, now this fix doesn’t come as fast because you don’t get to see the udders until they are in production so the feedback just cont.

cont.

comes in slower, so obviously change will come at a slower pace as well. Now the Big Challenge!! Finding the right animals to move the breed forward, and to accentuate all the positive’s while eliminating the negatives! That’s what makes breeding cattle so fun for us.

What has surprised you the most about the breed? What has surprised me the most is how fast the cattle are getting better, in just the 8 years we have been breeding cattle they have gotten so much better. That’s due to the great breeders in this breed! Both long time breeders and the large amounts of new breeders getting in are doing a great job of breeding cattle that are more functional and acceptable to cattleman around the country.

Do you breed Polled or Horned Mini Herefords? At KLD we breed for the best animal we can make, Horned, Polled, Blue or Green we don’t care! Quality is the first thing we select for, sometimes that’s in a Horned animal and sometimes it’s a Polled one. When it comes to marketing semen we always try to have both Horned and Polled Bulls in our lineup, just because we don’t single trait select in our program we are very aware that others do, and when they call looking for a bull that has to be Polled or has to be Horned we want to be able to fill their needs.

How important is the youth program to this breed? The youth program is the backbone to every breed! To the Mini Hereford breed I would say it’s the backbone, the heart and the soul! Its why we are raising this smaller sized breed! It’s all for the kids that want to start before the age of 9, kids that start showing Minis at 3-7 years of age have a huge advantage and head start on kids that don’t start showing until 9 years of age or older.

The small unintimidating size and docility are what attract kids and their parents to our youth programs. The great thing I see is that a large number of kids that started out showing Mini’s have continued to show even after they are eligible to show larger breeds, even into their college years!

How do you market your calves? We market them several different ways depending on time of the year and number we have available. We like to market them through online sales on Breeders World, this offers a fair and equal chance for all our customers to choose and buy the animal they want. Private Treaty sales are always welcome and a great way to generate income without spending the extra time and money to video and properly present the cattle. The only draw-back to private treaty sales is that fairness to customers, most people want to see all you have, not just what you have left! Facebook™ advertising has been huge for us to get our name out, show potential customers what we have and what we are about. Its free so like our Facebook™ page!

What has been the biggest key to the success of KLD? That’s easy, you have to start with our cows! The quality of the cows are so important, any can buy semen on the top bulls in the country, but it’s the cows you are breeding to them to is what sets you apart from the rest and at KLD we feel very fortunate to have collected what we believe are a superior set of cows. With that goes hand in hand is our extensive ET program, with the help of Trans Ova we can take these superior genetics and multiple them quickly and efficiently. In 2019 we made 160 heifer calf embryos, we sold 60, we put 80 in recipient cows and kept 20 froze in the tank.

What would you say to someone thinking about raising Mini Herefords? I would tell them it’s a very rewarding venture! The cattle are good, the people are great, and the timing is perfect! This breed has exploded since we started 8 years ago and don’t see any signs of it slowing down anytime this decade! The demand is HIGH ,and the supply is LOW! The hardest part of starting a herd is finding the good quality bred cows to get started! Most breeds have multiple sales every weekend all over the country where you can buy quality bred females, not in this breed! You must look hard for people wanting to sell QUALITY bred females! That’s why at KLD we try every other year to have a bred female sale because there is just not a lot of breeders that have the numbers to sustain having production sales.

MAPLE SYRUP urine disease

I

BY: SHANE BEDWELL, AHA CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER & DIRECTOR OF BREED IMPROVEMENT

U

nderstanding the basics of Maple Syrup Urine Disease. I would like to thank all of our Hereford breeders for their resiliency and dedication. Recently, a genetic defect known as Maple Syrup Urine Disease (MSUD) was identified in the breed. I would like to take the time to answer some recurring questions concerning this disease. What is MSUD? MSUD is a lethal genetic abnormality and is a simple autosomal recessive gene. Affected calves have a defect in an enzyme that breaks down complex amino acids in the diet. The resulting buildup of these amino acids in the body causes lethal brain damage. What are the symptoms of MSUD? Affected calves are typically born without symptoms, but by 2 to 4 days old become slow, dull and eventually recumbent. The calf will often throw its head back and lie on its side, unable to rise. These calves may have some swelling of the brain at autopsy, but diagnosis requires laboratory investigation. This disease is also found in humans and is named for the smell of urine observed in human babies — the smell is not always noted in calves. What is the frequency level of identified carriers for MSUD? At this time, less than 1 percent of the 33,000 animals genotyped with the marker test for MSUD have been identified as carriers.

MINI MAFIA

l

WINTER 2020

Will an animal identified as a carrier always sire a carrier progeny? No, a carrier animal has a 50 percent chance of siring a carrier animal and a 50 percent chance of siring a noncarrier.

34

Can a calf have MSUD if only one parent is a carrier for MSUD? No, for a calf to have MSUD, both parents must be carriers. Even then, there is only a 25 percent chance of having an affected calf. Consequently, this mating profile would also yield a 25 percent chance of an MSUD-free animal and a 50 percent chance of an MSUD carrier. Did the American Hereford Association (AHA) pick and choose which animals were initially tested for MSUD? No, the AHA published all results found for MSUD.

I

Why do some of my genotyped animals have a MSUD result while others do not? The marker test for MSUD was only available on AHA genotype panels from roughly the fall of 2014 through the fall of 2017. Animals previously genotyped outside this timeframe are eligible for a standalone MSUD test at $18. These requests must be made through AHA Customer Service. Going forward, how will MSUD testing be handled when an animal is DNA tested? The AHA has moved to a higher density genotype panel that will return MSUD results along with other abnormality results and a genomic profile. This genotype panel will allow for continued genetic advancement of the breed. How can I identify animals in my herd that warrant testing for MSUD? Members can run a potential defect carrier job for MSUD or any of the genetic abnormalities through MyHerd. This job can be accessed under the “Jobs & Reports” tab. For more information on how to run this job and to receive a report for MSUD, please use this link: Iorad.com/player/1553175/How-To-Run-The-Potential-DefectsCarriers-Report#trysteps-1 When I ran the MSUD carrier report, no animals came up as potential carriers. Does this mean I do not have any animals that could be carriers? Not necessarily, because not all genotyped animals have a result for MSUD. With continued testing for MSUD, there will likely be additional animals identified as carriers, so it is best to run the defect carriers report periodically. Where can I access a list of animals identified as MSUD carriers? Members can access a list of MSUD carrier animals at Hereford. org under the “Genetic Abnormality” tab under “Genetics.” Reports of MSUD to the AHA and to the diagnostic lab at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln are absent in recent years. With an estimated gene frequency of less than 1 percent, the current occurrence of calf losses is estimated at less than 20 per 1 million births and is likely going unrecognized. Even with this low incidence rate, testing of at risk animals should be completed to ensure this abnormality does not propagate. Cited from the April 2019 Herford World

GENOMICS CONTINUED advance our understanding of calf diseases I

BY: DAVID STEFFEN, DVM, PH.D., ACV, UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA-LINCOLN

M

odest cost sequencing, the ability to cheaply and rapidly genotype tens of thousands of markers, and large genomic databases available to researchers have advanced industry approaches to investigating potentially heritable diseases. Decades ago, investigation was long, costly and often uncertain — breeders may have been reluctant to report problems, and breed groups considered risk and cost when confronted with abnormal calves. Current technology allows modest investments to enlighten producers’ understanding of diseases and can rapidly place tools in the hands of breeders to mitigate impacts and losses associated with deleterious genotypes. Cost benefit analysis is still prudent in prioritizing projects for funding, but benefits and cost reductions allow for affordable investigation of more cases. Investigation Current investigations into several diseases at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) are being slowed by incomplete reporting and inadequate sampling of affected calves and related individuals. Vigilance in investigating neonatal calf problems is paramount. The first step to investigate calf problems is to establish a clear phenotype definition of the condition. Your local veterinarian can often assist and will accurately diagnose well-known and common calf conditions. Veterinarians are also helpful in accurately communicating phenotypic features of uncommon or emerging diseases, as well as collecting and properly shipping diagnostic or research samples. Breed association field officers also have knowledge of disorders in the breed and can be a conduit to further diagnostic assistance. The cell phone camera is a huge asset to facilitate disease reporting — often those images and a brief description of interpretation from the ranch serve as a valuable starting point. These images and initial reports help determine sampling needs. Samples used to diagnose and to evaluate environmental or infectious disease vary by the condition presented. When calves are reported with a phenotypic or epidemiologic feature suggesting a genetic component may be present, we add sampling to enable harvest and banking of DNA for research. Blood

I

preserved in an EDTA (purple top) blood tube is the easiest sample for scientists to work with as a DNA source. When affected animals are deceased, an ear may be used to extract DNA for research. The ear cools rapidly at death and is an easy sample to collect. It is important to report disorders when samples are still available. For research, the affected calf, dam, a few half siblings and the sire are sampled for DNA harvest. Samples are saved, and when the analysis suggests further research is justified, genotypic or sequencing studies are pursued. The diagnostic program at the UNL accepts referrals from breed associations and veterinarians. I encourage breeders to contact their breed associations to report concerns and to access assistance. A local veterinarian, a local diagnostic facility or the UNL program can all initiate investigations when congenital calf disease concerns arise, and they will work together as a team with breed associations to solve these industry-wide problems.
