Welcome
to the first edition of DreamWorks, and thank you for your consideration of what we believe to be one of the highest quality sets of of Simmental and Angus genetics available for your appraisal. This inaugural sale has been many years in the making. Careful selection of sires for use in artificial insemination and cleanup roles, coupled with rigorous culling has resulted in a premier herd of highly productive cattle. Now, for the very first time, we have opened the gates to our bred and open replacement heifer pens for you to select from the cream of the crop. We expect a lot of our cows at NFF. Fertility. Fleshing ability. Feet and udders that last. Each year the calves deemed not to be of seedstock quality go to Iowa Corn Beef, owned and operated by Matt and Jordan Nelson, for finishing where they are monitored closely so that under performing genetic lines can be removed. www.nelsoncattle.com Equally as important is that our cattle exhibit a phenotype that Joe and Barb • Gabe and Kayla • Matt, Jordan and Maverick pleases the eye. While we realize that not every one is meant to be a show heifer, our females are selected heavily for balance and femininity. Through all of this selection pressure we’ve identified a number of cow families that have set themselves apart from the rest and become the cornerstones of our herd. It’s a formidable task, but each year we choose only the most elite of these females to be utilized in our embryo transfer program. This technology allows us to stack the deck in our favor and in turn, deliver to customers our most potent genetics in volume every year.
Nelson Family Farms
One thing you will not see in this catalog is any “retained embryo interest.” In fact, each and every female listed is selling in her entirety and we won’t even withhold a single flush. This is certainly not because we don’t think these females are worthy. Quite the contrary, we feel many of them have the potential to go on to be great donors. But they are intended to be your donors, not ours. Rest assured that if and when you choose to make those genetics available for purchase again we will be waiting at the front of the line to support your program, but your new acquisitions will be totally yours and free of any complications from us. A select group of the open heifers have been entered in the open show “on the hill” at the NWSS so that their new owners may show them in Denver if they would like. Also, it’s going to be an exciting summer for our juniors as both the Simmental and Angus Junior National shows will be returning to the upper midwest in 2018. We feel that the show prospects offered in this sale all have the potential to be successful at a high level. We look forward to hearing the reports and seeing photos of your new purchases around the show circuit, and please let us know if there is anything we can do to help you on your way to the backdrop! The bred females offered at DreamWorks all sell safe with an A.I. sired calf. By performing an ultrasound on our replacements 70100 days after artificial breeding we were able to determine with certainty which females had settled A.I. and sex almost all of the pregnancies. We have included all of this data in the catalog so that our customers can make an informed decision when making their selections. We have a strict policy at NFF: if we know something, you will know also. Also selling at DreamWorks will be 50+ open commercial cows nursing August-November calves. We sourced them as pregnant cows out of the west this spring and calved them out on grass this summer and fall. These young, sound females will make excellent recipient candidates for their new owners. They have been managed at a high level alongside cows receiving NFF embryos so regardless whether you choose to use them in a fall or spring calving rotation know that all the chute work will be done and they will be ready to go to work for you. We are fortunate to be partnered with some of the best breeders in the business. We are proud to say that those great partners have become great friends and we appreciate their continuing support of our program. Rest assured that they hold themselves to the same high standards for quality and customer service as we do, and we all anticipate the opportunity to expand our circle of friends thanks to this new event. There is only one thing more important than the cattle at NFF, and that is our customers. Large or small, near or far, there is nothing more valuable to us than your confidence in our cattle and our commitment to stand behind them. We look forward to the opportunity to assist you after the sale with nutrition, breeding decisions, or anything else you might encounter. Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions at any time. One close look at this offering and we think you’ll have no trouble finding the kind of females that are right for you. Simmental and Angus, opens and breds, the variety throughout these pages includes something for everyone. But as you study their differences also keep in mind the things they have in common, like a sound structure and pleasing look, backed by years of quality management practices and our promise to do everything we can to make you successful with them. So join us on Friday evening December 1 for a fine meal and even better fellowship at the first edition of DreamWorks, and help us kick off what is sure to become a great tradition for years to come! Sincerely, The Nelson Family

RCC-NFF Wicked was the most successful show heifer ever to stand under the fans at Nelson Family Farms. So, as we sat down to arrange this catalog for our first female sale it only seemed right that it should begin with her progeny. The Wicked females are easy to pick out on the farm. They possess a correct, extremely three-dimensional skeleton and lay down an extra big footprint to go with it. Particularly impressive is their added muscle mass and ability to move out in a free and athletic manner despite it. The consistently complete females generated by this cow family should come as no surprise to anyone who has studied the pedigree. Wicked, along with much of the foundation of our herd are descendants of the immortal Redalen Cattle Company donor BH Miss MT 02K, a female who set the standard in the showring and in the pasture for many years. An investment in these genetics will certainly not be misplaced.

A standout since birth, E108 has always been on the list of our top purebred Simmental show prospects. This is the first calf crop out of W/C Relentless 32C but one look through this catalog and I think you’ll agree this young sire will only gain in popularity as his daughters begin to make their way through sales and to backdrops across the country.

As livestock breeders we are always working to incorporate outcross genetics. While we believe this to be a very important part of a healthy breeding program, it is also one of the most challenging. We used Mack AF W237 to fill this niche and could not be more pleased with the results. Thanks to that outcross pedigree this female comes packed with breeding utility, and combined with her outstanding phenotype she will make a wise addition to any herd. Maternal sister sells as lot 31.

Her dam is a full sister to RCC-NFF Wicked who offers a similar massive body type with slightly more extension through her front one third. It’s because of daughters like E169 that WLE Big Deal has become one of the breed’s elite female makers and will remain one of our heaviest used sires.

This trio of full sisters represent one of the most successful flushes yet at NFF. Their dam is our hottest young donor cow who’s royal pedigree links top female makers like SVF/NJC Built Right, Rhythm 418P, and BC Lookout. Combine that with the up and coming sire W/C Relentless and you have a potent 3/4 blood package that will perform not only in the showring but in the pasture as well. Minor differences in body type will separate these three, but regardless whether you prefer a slightly deeper flank or cleaner neck know that each of them excel in terms of soundness, with an extremely soft pastern and flex to spare. As much as we would like to retain highly desirable females like these for our own herd, they will all have new homes on December 1! Maternal sister sells as Lot 31.

Mindemann Blacklass A24 is a female who never failed to exceed our expectations as a show heifer, and now she’s doing it again as a donor. She won more banners than we care to list for the Mayer family but what might be even more impressive is the fact that less than a week after returning home from Denver as a senior yearling division champion she laid down and had a bull calf unassisted and has been averaging more transferable embryos per flush than any other donor on the farm ever since. These four heifer calves, by four different sires, represent the first live genetics ever offered out of this up and coming donor. Each of them designed to fill a different role but regardless which of them you add to your herd you can rest assured that she will have the same extraordinary impact on your program that her mother has had on ours.

NFF Miss SnowbalY062 - reference dam
The Snowball cow family is one we are particularly proud of at NFF. The granddam, N901, is still in production at nearly 15 years of age and showing no signs of slowing down. Her daughters have set themselves apart from the rest of the herd thanks to an ideal foot, perfect udders, and a balanced, symmetrical design that makes them some of the most asked-about cows on the farm. These females excel in the traits that contribute in a large part to one of the most valuable characteristics we as producers look for in our cattle: longevity. Longevity is something very easily quantified in a production setting. It boils down to very simple questions like, did she last? Did she wean a good calf? Does she add to the overall profitability of the enterprise each year? There is, however, no EPD or index that can help us select for these traits as accurately as we can through visual appraisal and real world experience. One look at these three heifer calves and you know they are ready to follow in the footsteps of their mothers and grandmother, and become the same kind of cornerstone for your program that N901 has for ours. E059 and E060 are two of the most striking purebred females in the offering. They will without a doubt do some serious damage around the show circuit next year. E019 is an exciting daughter of FHEN Halftime who will get better every single day you own her!

I said earlier that the Halftime calves are one of our favorite sire groups, and here is another example why. E066 is ultra smooth from end to end and a top show prospect in this offering. Long in her muscle pattern and flat boned, she will be a force to be reckoned with in the showring!

The Wicked family does it again! A maternal half-sister to lot 3 and to the mother of lot 4, this Combustible daughter is ready to make a big impact in your herd. If you’re looking for a purebred female that deserves to be on the fast track to the donor pen, look no further than D072. She probably should have spent the summer in the show barn instead of the pasture!
This STF Royal Affair daughter is the 2016 natural calf out of the donor dam of lots 9, 10, and 11. The only thing more exciting than what that cow has done so far is what her daughters are poised to accomplish for their new owners and this bred heifer is no exception. The Big Deal heifer calf she carries will register as a purebred and undoubtedly make a speedy return on your investment!

These five Ruby NFF Yukon daughters are tough to part with because we already know what a huge contribution they will make to a breeding program. We have a number of his daughters in production and every one of them has the same picture perfect udder and balanced, feminine design that makes them front pasture type cows. In addition, the Yukon progeny excel in terms of pure performance.

T
wo years ago we partnered with T/R Cattle Co on a potload of high quality Angus bred heifers from the Ochsner Ranch in Torrington, Wyoming. They have matured into an incredible set of practical brood cows who seem to put everything they’ve got into their calf each year, but still maintain an exceptional A.I. conception rate. These bred heifers are members of the first calf crop out of this investment. Due in January/February to the proven calving ease sire Eathington Subzero, they are ready to go to work in your herd. Study their design, know the program they represent, and bid with confidence on females that put a check in every box.

Commercial Pairs
A
s part of the first DreamWorks Elite Female Sale we have elected to offer a group of 50+ commercial cow/calf pairs. These are mostly 3-5 year old cows who have been selected for foot and udder quality and disposition. They are nursing calves born August-November. The cows are selling open and we feel they will make outstanding recip candidates. They have received an Express 5 modified-live vaccine, Synanthic oral de-wormer and Clean-Up pour-on. The cows have also tested negative for BVD, Johne’s Disease, Anaplasmosis and Blue Tongue to ensure that your embryos and the rest of your herd will not be exposed to any unwanted contagion or parasite. At birth the calves received InForce 3, Bovilis Coronavirus, and Alpha 7 MB-1, and on November 9 we administered Pyramid 5 plus Presponse, Vision 7 with Somnus, and pour-on. These cows are ready to go to work in either a fall or spring calving rotation and you would undoubtedly have to put on a lot of miles to find this many open recip cows of such high quality and with these credentials. They will sell in small groups and a supplement sheet will be available sale day with penning information. catalog design by...

There are no warranties, expressed or implied, by either the auctioneer or consignor, except as set forth herein, as to the merchantability of fitness for any particular purpose of any animal offered in this sale. The right to bid or the right to reject the final bid, if done before the hammer falls, is reserved for all sellers unless otherwise announced from the sale block or as prohibited by law in the state wherein the sale is being conducted. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Any change of information other than in the catalog will be announced from the auction block and such announcements shall take precedence over printed material. All statements made from the auction block or those made by the seller (in private treaty) must be documented by seller if requested by the buyer at time of sale. PURCHASER’S RISK: Each animal becomes the property of and therefore is also the risk of the purchaser as soon as it is sold; except it shall be the obligation of the seller to see that animals are fed and cared for free of charge to purchaser, until loaded for shipment or until the expiration of twenty-four (24) hours after the sale, whichever occurs first. HEALTH REQUIREMENTS: 1. All cattle entered for sale must meet the health regulations of the state in which they are sold. All other agreements regarding the health of the animal will be between the buyer and seller and should be documented in writing. 2. CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRY: Each animal which is catalogued, offered and sold as a registered animal shall have a certificate of registry available at time of sale. When an animal is sold as “eligible for registry” or “registry applied for”, the seller shall be responsible for obtaining the certificate of registry and for the proper transfer of the certificate to the purchaser including full payment of transfer fees. IDENTIFICATION: Each animal at time of sale must have a readable tattoo or brand corresponding to that shown on the certificate of registration. AUTHENTICITY OF PEDIGREE: When an animal, through parental validation, is determined to have an ancestry other than that reported on the registration certificate, the buyer shall be entitled to a refund of the purchase price from the seller upon return of the animal to the farm of the seller at the seller’s expense. The animal in question, at the buyer’s option, may be exchanged for another animal of equal value, or if agreeable with the buyer, the seller may have the certificate returned to the buyer. Any adjustment provided herein, if selected, shall absolve the seller from further liability for authenticity of pedigree to the buyer. BREEDING GUARANTEES AND DEFINITIONS: 1. Females are guaranteed to be breeders, with the exception of: a) Female calves sold at side of dam b) Injury or disease occurring to the animal after time of sale c) Gross negligence or willful misconduct on the part of the purchaser d) Females used in ovum transplant after time of sale e) Cows sold with calf at side or a female that calves after sale to a breeding prior to the date of sale 2. Any guarantees with respect to the ability to freeze semen shall be made by separate agreement between buyer and seller. 4. Safe in calf females are females that have been diagnosed pregnant by a competent veterinarian, and are pregnant at time of sale. 5. A bred female is a female known to have been served by a bull either by natural breeding or artificial insemination, but it does not necessarily mean that the female is safe in calf to that service. 6. A pasture bred female is a female that has been pastured with a designated bull and has been exposed for the time stated, but it does not necessarily mean that this female is safe in calf to that bull. 7. An open female is a non-pregnant animal. 8. Calves sold off their dams (split pairs) shall carry the full breeding guarantee. PRIVILEGE OF PURCHASER TO EXAMINE: The purchaser of a female animal may have her examined within twenty-four (24) hours after the fall of the hammer and prior to removal from sale premises. EMBRYO TRANSFER: 1. Sellers should provide upon request a complete history of embryo transfer activity for any female offered for sale.
2. Withholding information on the existence of frozen embryos at the time of sale would be considered an unethical practice. HORNED-SCURRED-POLLED: DEFINITIONS: 1. HORNED — An animal with a horn growth affixed to the skull that has or has not been removed. 2. POLLED/SCURRED — An animal with rudimentary horn growth that will not develop into a horn. The buyer has thirty (30) days from date of sale to notify the seller that an adjustment is in order. 2. If an animal is sold as smooth-polled and proves to be scurred, the seller shall be obligated to refund the price upon return of the animal to the farm of the seller at the expense of the seller or at the buyer’s option shall be exchanged for a smooth-polled animal of equal value. 3. If an animal is sold as polled and develops scurs, the seller will not be obligated to make any adjustment as a scurred animal is considered polled. 4. If an animal is sold as polled and has scurs, it shall be so announced at the time of sale that the animal has scurs. If it is not announced and the buyer finds before the animal leaves the sale premises that the animal has scurs, the buyer must notify the seller of the findings. The seller shall then be obligated to refund the purchase price. OPTIONS AND PRIVILEGES OF RETURN OR ADJUSTMENT: The following adjustments do not preclude the right of the buyer and seller to mutually agree upon other terms and conditions for settlement of any dispute. 1. All claims for adjustment or refund must be made in writing either six (6) months from the date of sale or no later than when the animal reaches 24 months of age whichever occurs later, with the exception of claims involving misrepresentation of service sire or as otherwise provided herein. 2. In the event an animal is claimed to be a nonbreeder, the animal may be returned to the farm of the seller, at the buyer’s expense, if in good physical condition, and the return is in compliance with the health requirements of the seller’s state. The seller shall be entitled to a six (6) month trial period following the return of the animal in which to prove the animal is a breeder. If at the end of six (6) months the seller is unable to prove the animal is a breeder, the seller shall, at the option of buyer, replace the animal with another equal value or refund the purchase price. Either option shall be deemed full satisfaction and settlement. 3. If a female is sold as “safe in calf” to a given sire or sires on a specified date or dates and proves not to be as represented, the buyer is entitled to a refund of the purchase price from the seller upon return of the animal and resulting progeny thereof to the farm of the seller at the seller’s expense. 4. If a female is sold as “open” and proves to be with calf at time of sale and examined pregnant within sixty (60) days after sale, the buyer may return the animal to the farm of the seller prior to calving for a refund of the full purchase price or for another animal of equal value, whichever acceptable to the buyer. It shall be the obligation of the seller to bear any expenses incurred for transportation of the animal in question to the farm of the seller. GENETIC TESTING AND TraitTrac STATUS: Sellers must identify the TraitTrac status and the results of any qualitative genetic testing performed on any animals or genetic material offered for sale. The ASA considers it an unethical practice to misrepresent or fail to disclose the TraitTrac status or qualitative genetic test results of any animal or genetic material. DISCLOSURE OF MATERIAL INFORMATION: Sellers must disclose all material information concerning any animal or genetic material offered for sale. For the purposes of these Sale Terms and Conditions, “Material Information” is defined as any information which would be likely to affect the value of the animal or genetic material if the information were known to the public.
