GLUTEN-FREE BEER ROUTE

So, you’re booked into Barcelona for the weekend and it’s a Friday night… but you are allergic to gluten and the options look limited. That might be true in some parts of the city, but gluten-free options are now becoming increasingly available. Here is a quick guide to finding una cerveza sin gluten.

El Maravillas

After a quick stop off at Barca’s football ground, head towards one of Barcelona’s most charming, hidden squares. This is a great place to start, or indeed finish the evening. El Maravillas is a charming bar. We sat on the tantalising terrace situated on the vibrant square and tried the locally brewed Daura beer by Damm. This bar has featured in all the top guides throughout the years and, to be honest, it was very hard to leave!

Gluten-free dining tip: If you are stuck for food, try Flax & Kale (Tallers, 74) or M2 Gluten-Free (Diagonal, 505) for an extensive selection of meat and vegan dishes. BrewDog Barcelona

Billing itself as a no-nonsense chain bar, Scotland’s Brew Dog craft beer brewery is extending its global reach by opening its own bars in major European cities. This beautiful Barcelona venue showcases the company’s selection of excellent beers, real ales and gluten-free tipples like Vagabond Pale Ale and the Catalán beer Zatec brewed by Lo Vilot. Cheers!

Bodega Fermín La Barceloneta

This is the craft beer central in the popular seaside barrio, and offers some great flavours from the local Wylie Brewery, as well as one or two gluten-free options on rotation. They serve another locally brewed gluten-free beer, Espiga, made near Montserrat, which is by far the locals’ favourite!
