Thank You, Old Oak
Written by Britt Crow-Miller and illustrated by Amy Schimler-Safford
When a 400-year-old oak tree falls, a community of forest animals gather to give thanks for her motherly care she provided the ecosystem. They learn that even after death, her legacy lives on as healthy oak seedlings that will serve the forest community for years to come.

Learn how oak trees provide shelter and food to forest animals and insects

Just as Owl settled into his hole, there came a pop from deep within Old Oak’s trunk.
The ancient tree leaned to one side.
Then, all at once, the forest floor began to tremble as scores of acorn weevils dug their way to daylight. They’d come to thank their friend, whose fruit had housed and fed them all as tiny grubs. Now grown, they scuttled into the crowd, joining the other critters at Old Oak’s noble trunk.
Teaches kids about the lifecycle of a tree

As the sun rose higher in the sky, the possum, deer, and black bear families made their way to the gathering.

Every branch in the forest was crowded with noisy nuthatches, blue jays, and thrushes, each crooning a call of gratitude, creating a symphony of crowing, whistling, and lively trills.

What Happens When an Oak Tree Falls?
How To Read a Tree Ring

Endmatter dives deeper into facts about oak trees, the ecosystems they support, and what happens when they fall

Fallen trees slowly release the nutrients locked up inside their wood into the surrounding environment. Because oak trees are so big and tall, there is a lot to be broken down through decomposition so other plants have nutrients and room to grow.
Although the wood of a fallen oak is dead, it will become a hotbed of life! Decaying logs, called nurse logs, are essential to the forest ecosystem. Fungi may begin growing on and in these logs, softening them as they decompose. Insects will make their homes inside the wood and mosses, ferns, and seeds may begin growing out of them. Eventually, the wood will transform into new soil, having nursed new life throughout its journey of decomposition.

Trees record their history and the history of the environment around them, including the weather, earthquakes, and wildfires. We can read the history of the tree, climate, and ecosystem by looking at the rings in their wood.
Tree rings can be counted to tell us how many years a tree lived, with each light ring and dark ring adding up to one year.
Light rings show growth that happens from spring to early summer.

Dark rings show growth from late summer through the autumn.

A wider ring usually indicates a year when the weather was wetter and warmer.
A thinner ring usually indicates a year when the weather was drier and colder.

If you see a nurse log in the forest, take some time to observe it up close!

When rings are very close together, it means the tree didn’t grow much that year, probably due to something stressful like a drought (lack of rain) or insect infestation.
Wildfires can show up in tree ring records as scars.
