To the Barker College Community
It gives me great pleasure to provide you with the outstanding HSC results from the leaving Class of 2023. The Class of 2023 has led the School exceptionally well. The cohesive nature of this year group and the hard work of the students has been simply amazing. There are so many wonderful stories and so much to celebrate. We honour each and every student and the care, effort and support provided to them by their teachers. We particularly acknowledge, Caleb Stace, who achieved an ATAR of 99.95. The School is incredibly proud of his hard work, commitment and this outstanding result. We also extend our congratulations to Nicholas Bradshaw, who achieved a First in Course for English Standard. This year there has been a significant increase in the number of Band 6s across subjects. In some subjects, the number of Band 6s has more than doubled! This is an extraordinary achievement and testament to the academic care provided and the hard work of the Class of 2023.

In addition, there were 21 All-Rounders (achieving top Band results in 10 or more units). It is inspirational to note that these students contributed to the broader Barker community through an extensive range of co-curricular and service activities. Barker is equally proud of the countless students in our graduating year whose efforts surpassed their own aspirations, demonstrating once again that the diversity of the School is a strength. To one, to all, we offer our deepest admiration and thanks. Barker is a non-selective school and we are greatly encouraged to see the exceptional effort that our students invested in their work. This augurs well for their future in whatever endeavour they choose to pursue. We continue to be competitive with schools that have selective student cohorts. The HSC League Tables published in the media indicates that Barker College was ranked 37 in NSW (up from 50 in
2022), whilst a useful guide for some observers, it fails to capture the countless stories of outstanding effort by students who lift themselves into higher bands by consistent and focussed efforts with the support of their caring teachers and encouragement of their loving families. I honour all the graduating class of 2023 for their dedication, and we are pleased to share just a few of these stories in the pages that follow. The Heads of Department, Heads of House and all staff are also to be congratulated for their support of their students. School education is a lengthy experience where so much more is accomplished than can ever be measured in ranks and marks. We seek to equip our students to do good in the world and to exercise their gifts for the benefit of others. The class of 2023 certainly bring us hope for their future.
On behalf of over 17000 alumni whose ranks you now join, congratulations. From the scores of teachers, coaches and mentors over your 13+ years of education, congratulations to each and every student. We give thanks to the Lord for the blessing that the 2023 Year 12 has been to our community. We wish every student the continued blessings of the Lord for a life of fulfilment ahead. We will watch their future with a thankful heart and remind them we are at the ready to care for them all their days. Peace.

Celebrating Academic Care
Today we honour the achievement of our Year 12 2023 cohort... truly finding success in learning is much more than an ATAR. At Barker we recognise that an excellent education engages the whole student and helps them to develop skills and character attributes that will last a lifetime. Because we understand that learning is a relational pursuit, our HSC programs prioritise dynamic and positive relationships and varied cocurricular experiences. Whether it is rehearsing a play which explores deep and difficult themes, or training for a Rugby or Netball team, or reflecting on the bigger purposes of life in Chapel, our students draw on friendships with peers and staff to help them understand themselves and others. Our 2023 cohort have sharpened their resilience, wrestled with ideas, taken physical or intellectual risks and harnessed their reserves of grit both within and outside the classroom.
We have gathered just a few snapshots here of broader student achievement for our 2023 cohort. All their stories and experiences are different, and their final scores are varied. But each one of these students has grown and their personal achievements are worth celebrating. We congratulate them for not only improving their scores and navigating the academic pressures of their HSC year, but we also rejoice that they have nurtured their curiosity, have found greater empathy for others and now better understand themselves and the world around them. It is these remarkable achievements that will set them up for success in life beyond the Mint Gates.
Dr Julie Wilson Reynolds Deputy Head Academic Care

Jamison Cameron To Jamison Cameron, getting involved in co-curricular activities at Barker was more than an opportunity to spend time with friends, but rather a chance to pursue his passions outside the classroom and develop new skills. A student who has immersed himself in four different Music ensembles since Year 7, multiple stage productions through Drama, appointed Cadet Under Officer (CUO) in Year 12, serving as Cru Captain, as well as participating in Basketball, Volleyball and AFL, Jamison’s co-curricular resume is inspiring. When asked how significant it is to immerse yourself in Barker’s co-curricular activities, Jamison highlights how incredibly important it is as they provide a ‘playground’ to grow skills in leadership, creativity and inter-personal skills. It’s no doubt that Jamison’s future will be bright and wherever he ends up, he will always remember the special memories from his time at Barker. His highlight was being part of the 2022 Garma Festival in Northeast Arnhem Land, Northern Territory. “Part of this Festival was the Youth Forum, where 60 selected student leaders from around Australia came together and formed a reconciliation plan for the future, acknowledging our past mistakes and highlighting our goals for Australia. Whilst there, I not only touched the surface of more than 60,000 years of cultural nuance and heritage, but I also discovered a lot about myself and my faith,” Jamison said.
Iris Lee Debating Captain, Iris Lee, speaks with distinction in all her debates. She was selected in the CAS First representative debating team and competed as a member of the NSW Schools Debating team at the National Championships in Melbourne, where she was chosen as a reserve for this year’s Australian Schools Debating team. This placed Iris as one of the six from the 32 speakers in the tournament, a phenomenal achievement. Iris shares that “debating has honed my analytical rigour and proved academically invaluable by helping me make stronger logical links in my essay writing. It’s also bolstered my public speaking confidence, a skill that I believe will serve me well in any career choice.” Iris is one of only three Australian debating representatives from Barker – Natasha Simonsen (2002), Bo Seo (2011-12) and now, Iris Lee (2023).

Celebrating Academic Care Max Hanley Max Hanley was part of the Barker Redbacks team that travelled to Canada and Dallas, Texas, for the FRC Robotics World Championships. A talented and creative student who fused Robotics and Design in his Design and Technology Major Project, creating an automated Medical Deliver System. The RES-Q Robot delivers emergency medical aid to people living in extremely remote areas of Australia. The robot provides life-saving medical equipment to persons who are critically injured or at risk in timely fashion by being airdropped from an aircraft; followed by automated transportation across varying ground terrain through video and GPS technology. “It’d be difficult to understate the impact of Barker Robotics, and the School more broadly, on my life so far and no doubt my future,” Max said. “Being able to work in the environment provided here has exposed me to a passion I might have otherwise taken years to find, not to mention the countless memories I already look back on fondly. “The DT major project was a great opportunity to demonstrate the skills I’d built in previous years and was only made possible by the amazing staff at Robotics and DT. I’m now heading toward an exciting future in engineering that will continue to be assisted by Barker, this time through the Robotics alumni program.”
Sophie Kovac For a student who joined Barker in Year 10, Sophie Kovac has immersed herself in many co-curricular activities including Netball, Swimming, Surf Lifesaving, Cadets, Cru and Duke of Ed. “I joined Cadets at the start of Year 10 because I didn’t know many people and knew it was a good opportunity to make new friends with similar interests in such a big school. And I did!” Sophie shares. After realising how much value she gained when applying herself in cocurricular activities, it became one of Sophie’s highly rewarding and best things about Barker. Within these activities, she made new friends, learnt new skills, grew in character, and built a fulfilling school routine. “For Cadets, it was like giving time to another subject, so I learnt to maximise the work completed in less time by working with others to achieve a collective goal. It was important for me to learn how to complete Cadet planning tasks to a substantial level in a certain time frame rather than spending hours to get it to perfection.” A special memory that she will always look back on is “every fortnightly Monday morning in the last term of Year 12, my friend Emma and I did Bible studies with Mrs Yuen to ground ourselves for the week and to learn the wisdom there is in the word. I felt so cared for and at peace amongst all the stress of school.

Harry Black Starting at Barker in Year 1, Harry’s Barker journey has been one of great enjoyment and growth, learning many valuable lessons along the way. “The first of these is kindness. Life is better when you are kind to others, and if you show kindness to others, they will be kind to you in return. The second is to dream big. Everyone has different aspirations and goals, and Barker has taught me that no matter who you are, or where you come from, you should always aspire to reach these goals, as it will bring your life fulfillment. Finally, I have learnt respect. Treat people around you how you would want to be treated, and respect everyone for their own opinions.” For Harry, the most enjoyable aspect of Barker was the people. “These include my friends who I would spend so much time with both in school and outside, from playing soccer squares at lunch, to basketball games at someone’s house on the weekend.” He also shares that by people, it also includes the teachers. “They put so much effort into making school a safe and fun environment, and I will forever be grateful for this.” “As I now finish at Barker, I can look back and appreciate the time I’ve had here and how this school has set me up for life beyond school”, Harry shares.
Millie Abbott Millie Abott immersed herself in both co-curricular and academic life at Barker, getting involved in Hockey, Netball and Football as well as dedicating time to her studies. Although Millie’s teachers have seen a wonderful improvement in her work academically, Millie doesn’t feel like there was one defining moment that motivated her to put in the extra work. Rather every time she got a mark that made her proud, that was the motivation to continue to work hard. “All my teachers were so supportive and encouraging and were always available if I needed help outside of class time. Throughout the year, there were also lectures for certain subjects which helped as well, specifically lectures after an assignment, where teachers spoke about each section they personally marked which gave the best feedback,” Millie says. In addition to her academic achievements, Millie has had several proud moments that she will look back on, but her proudest achievement “is probably making the 1sts Soccer team in Year 11 which was an amazing time. I really enjoyed it and made good friends from different years as well. I will always remember playing footy and sitting with my friends on the oval at lunch, mainly because I know it’s something we probably won’t do much again.”

Celebrating Academic Care Marcus Kumar For Marcus Kumar, English wasn’t always his favourite subject, but when he figured that he would be doing English for the rest of his schooling, he decided to try and develop an interest in the subject. Much to his surprise, writing became really enjoyable and “a way for me to express different opinions and make different thoughts tangible,” he shares. Although developing an interest in English, Modern History was Marcus’ favourite subject, especially the Year 11 and 12 courses where he explains that there were many opportunities where students could deep dive into a topic they found interesting, and it’s a process which has really influenced his worldview. Marcus said he “always enjoyed how studying could be done beyond a textbook and that it’s given me the opportunity to build viewpoints about certain historical events.” So how has Barker supported his academic journey? One of the most important ways has been through the mentoring program where students can attend subject support sessions in the weeks before an assessment task. “My mentor was crucial throughout my final year by keeping me accountable for my studying and providing advice on how to best manage my workload.” Reflecting on his time at Barker, Marcus shared that Barker is unique in the fact that the teaching staff always tried to spend time with and understand each member of the cohort. Specifically, he shares that he will always remember the “net sessions with Mr Giltrap and Mr Walker at lunch, the conversations, laughs and my inability to play a straight drive.”
Georgie Bacon In the 2023 school musical Les Misérables, Georgie brought to life the lead character of Fantine, a young grisette in Paris who represented the downtrodden of France. With numerous standing ovations, Georgie’s performance is one that will long be remembered. Georgie’s creative skill extends beyond the theatre stage into the Visual Arts classroom. Her major works showcased the hours of work and dedication that was invested to produce beautiful pieces. “I have always been drawn to the arts for its freedom of expression and endless possibilities, both on stage, and in the Visual Arts classroom. These spaces were a reprieve from the stresses of Year 12 and the HSC, giving me some of my best and most memorable experiences of my final years at Barker.” Georgie says.

Oliver Uy Starting at Barker in Kindergarten, Oliver Uy has spent 13 years at Barker College, graduating with many cherished memories. “I feel very fortunate to have started in the first Kindergarten cohort at Barker for over 40 years and with a year group of only 16 students, it was a very tight-knit group. While our cohort has dramatically grown to over 300 students, what has remained constant throughout my journey as a veteran, has been the wonderful friendships forged, leadership and support from my teachers and the variety of opportunities both in the classroom and the co-curricular realm.” For Oliver what stands out most to him is being part of such a wonderful community, extending to all the teachers and coaches who act as great role models. “This year’s slogan, the Red Thread, has captured the way that all of us as students are connected and share a strong spirit and passion for the School which has made the last 13 years so enjoyable and given a great sense of inclusivity.” “What Barker has also taught me, through its motto, values and Christian ethos of the School is service, in leadership, everyday actions and seeking to help others who are in much less fortunate positions.” When asked to describe his Barker experience in just two words, Oliver didn’t hesitate to answer, “second home”.

Early Entry Offers A significant number of Barker students were given early entry offers to university in 2023. Students may apply for early entry programs based on the following categories and typically their Year 11 NESA grade plays a key role: • Academic merit • Elite athletes and performers • Future leaders recognised by the School • Students who have demonstrated significant school and community engagment and volunteering • Rural or remote applicants • Those who have experienced disadvantage It is pleasing to note that so many Barker students who applied for an Early Entry program, were successful in receiving at least one offer, with many students receiving multiple early entry offers. These offers helped to provide an extra level of certainty as students continued to work hard to achieve their best in their final HSC exams.
