Our mission is to inspire a life-long love of music in an atmosphere of enjoyment and mutual respect, engaging all students in creative, active and purposeful learning.

We provide an innovative continuum of teaching and learning from Pre-K - 12, through an expansive curricular and co-curricular program, reflecting the diversity of music in the 21st century.

We acknowledge the Dharug, Darkinjung, Wonnarua and Yolŋu peoples who are the traditional custodians of the land on which Barker College, Darkinjung Barker, Ngarralingayil Barker and Dhupuma Barker stand. We pay respect to the Elders past, present and emerging of the Dharug, Darkinjung, Wonnarua and Yolŋu nations and extend that respect to other Indigenous people within the Barker College community.

Introduction

The Junior School Music Concert is a showcase of the School’s outstanding music program, which provides the opportunity for each student in Years 2-3 to learn an instrument and develop their skills as part of a smaller ensemble group.

Additionally, Junior School students have the opportunity to participate in an auditioned choir, as well as band and orchestra groups developing their collaboration and teamwork skills as well as their listening and performance skills. As part of the curriculum program students also participate in massed choir groups highlighting the value of skills in this particular area.

The ability to play a musical instrument should not be underestimated and the aim of the program is to inspire students and develop a passion for music that will hopefully last throughout their lifetime. It is an opportunity that I wish I had when I was at school.

The students are supported in their endeavours by a talented and committed team of class and peripatetic instrumental teachers. I would like to thank the Music Department for their work in ensuring a wonderful music program.

I look forward to what should be another wonderful night of entertainment showcasing the extraordinary talent of the Junior School musicians.

Music is not just an extracurricular activity at Barker, it is an integral part of our school community. More than fifty percent of our school population enthusiastically participates in the joy of music making
