SPRING HAS SPRUNG Although I am a southern girl to my core, I did spend a good bit of time in the north. I lived in New Hampshire as a teen and Pittsburgh during the early years of my marriage. I was born on an army base in north Texas and grew up in south Louisiana, along bayous and cane fields. As much as I loved the south, I would dream of someday having a home in the mountains. When I did get a chance to live among the snowcapped peaks and rolling hills of the northeast, it felt a little like heaven. I enjoyed driving along winding back roads and loved the beauty of the first snowfall, but I could never really acclimate to the colder climate. That is when I truly began to appreciate spring, which in the deep south felt no different than most of our winters.

There is a weight that is lifted when winter fades away. Maybe it’s in the layers we shed or in the deeper breaths we take when the heaviness of winter dissipates. Everything around us begins to hum with renewed life. From fresh blooms of springtime flowers to the exhilaration we experience when planning activities and trips that were put on hold during winter and fall. We are ready for the new. That may mean organizing and decluttering our homes and lives by removing the things that no longer serve us. Or it could be about preparing for new experiences- weddings, babies, and vacations, with the people that bring us joy.

"Spring gives us the opportunity to start anew, to weed out the old and let new life grow in its place" I take this as a time to recharge. Although the holidays will always be my favorite time of year, they come with a lot of added stress. Every gift we buy, every get-together we plan, and every list we make comes with the weight of responsibility. As a mom, I can sometimes be so wrapped up in getting it “right” that I may miss out o the joy I should be experiencing. I know many others who feel the same. Spring allows us the time to start over, to reflect on what has passed, and to focus on what we want the next year to look like for ourselves and our families. My spring renewal started with a major home remodel, which we are in the messy middle. That has allowed me to purge and get rid of things collecting dust and taking up way too much space. I have decided to go with a more minimalistic design, and I feel much lighter. That is my goal this year, to do more with less. For me, that means spending more time with those I love, doing the things that I love, and less time on activities and people that do not add value to my life or business. It means celebrating events and moments that add more to my life and saying no to the things that do not. Our special spring edition highlights the places and things that help us celebrate those moments and our people. Take a trip to Montana to enjoy Yellowstone National Park and stop by the restored 1760’s barn that is the Greycliff Mill. Enjoy a bite at their charming restaurant and stay in the Airbnb for a night or two. The short term rental market has actually increased over 27% in the last year with more growth being predicted on the horizon. There’s money to be made out there and building and/or utilizing space in your barndominium could have some big financial perks ahead for you.

The design of your barndominium short term rental plays the second largest role (next to location) when it comes to drawing in guests and therefore profits. If you’re building, you’ll want to be sure to select a reputable builder who can help your vision to come life. You’d be surprised when you approach it from an investment standpoint how much easier it becomes to design; have a budget and stick to it.

When it comes to real estate it’s true, location is everything. So if you’re building a new barndominium be sure to select a location that is going to best fit the demographics you plan to attract. Are you in colder area where people want to escape to? Are you in the open plain lands where the eye can see for miles?

The highlight of utilizing a barndominium for your next short term rental investment is that a barndominium can be classified as a unique stay on short term rental sites, such as AirBNB. The ‘unique’ feature on these platforms puts your listing at a higher likelihood to be seen and booked. Not only that, but the reasonable cost to build barndominiums and the average per night rate for a short term rental being $185, your profit margin has just increased substantially.

Figure out who will be coming to stay at your barndominium and from there, you want to pick a design that revolves around that.

Creating memorable experiences Creating memorable experiences will require a little more thought in the short-term, but you and your guests will win in the long-term. Your guests become raving fans telling everyone they know about their stay (which means lots of referral business), they’ll leave 5-star meaningful reviews and you’ll be booked solid at premium rates. You see, I’ve always loved creating memorable experiences ever since I was little. I remember creating my own summer camp, carefully crafting the prizes or the games that the kids would play. Then “growing up,” I found myself creating experiences within my passion led businesses that have included, donor trips for my nonprofit Village Impact, adventure retreats for women in business through LadyStrength, creative gifts for my recent book called Passion to Purpose and last but not least, in our luxury lakefront home (which you can find on Instagram @DoverLakehouse). Creating these memorable experiences for clients, family and friends brings me immense joy. However, it does require an intention and commitment.

“Are you celebrating anything special?” is a great question to ask. You’ll be surprised by what you’ll discover (and how this will enable you to WOW the guest upon arrival). For example, we recently had a guest stay that after reading his profile, I noticed he was from the UK. This was a connection point as I was born in the UK and moved to Canada when I was 10. So I instantly thought of my favourite British snacks. Then, when they checked in, I left a few of the British treats in the guestbook. The result was a raving review and an inquiry about our summer dates for a future booking. Here’s what I want you to notice…

The “snacks” didn’t cost a lot (less than $10). But it was meaningful because they felt noticed and cared for. Too often people think that to WOW a guest you have to spend a whole lot of money. That’s not true. It’s the thought. But here’s the other thing I want you to notice… Asking great questions BEFORE the guest arrives will enable you to discover what’s important to your guest. And that’s what sets up the experience when the guest arrives. So take the time to listen. It can (and will) lead to guests booking multiple stays.

Creating this out of this world experience - especially for your AirBnB, boils down to a focus on three key “experience elements”.

Element #1 - Communication BEFORE Your Guest Arrives As with relationships and anything business related, clear and meaningful communication is so, so important. You want to make your guests feel welcome when communicating details about their stay. Oftentimes, just adding a few simple lines, or even words into your communication can help a guest feel heard and appreciated. Phrases like, “thank you for booking with us, we look forward to hosting you soon, if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask.”

Element #2 - The Little Touches DURING The Guest’s Stay Too many hosts think of guests as a one night stay. They’re in and they’re out… never to be seen or heard from again. But instead of focusing on getting people in and out, shift the focus to how you can create an experience where your guests want to return every year. Imagine if 30%, 40% or even 50% of your availability is already booked with returning guests? What do you think happens when supply is limited? It drives up the demand for the remaining availability. Which also means premium pricing :) So how do you create such a memorable experience that has guests returning? It’s all about the little touches. Our welcome experience starts the moment a reservation hits my inbox and continues when they enter our home, with a warm welcome greeting with their name on a large chalkboard as soon as they enter. Having a small chalkboard, or even an erase board from the dollar store can do the trick. The key is to personalize it with their name. It takes an extra five minutes to prep, but guess what happens? They take and share pictures of the welcome! And when guests share, it begins to positively frame up the experience they’re about to have. This then leads them to the kitchen where they will find some other local treats. The first is a welcome card that is handwritten to welcome our guests. Then we have a welcome basket. This may differ depending on our guests, but here are some things we often include:

local wine, with free wine tasting experience local peanuts kids activity pack (I have backpacks made with our logo on them, with a customized coloring book inside) Plus, we try to support local businesses within the AirBnB by providing local soaps and showcasing local paintings and decor in the home. With this we point out the shops they can find these products in (which creates fun conversation when they visit these stores!). There are so many other ways to make the experience special but we’ve had guests leave reviews and specifically mention things like our towels, Dover Lakehouse robes (with special ones for the kids!), cozy blankets, organic shampoo, freshly baked goodies and so many more.

When you’re thinking about the experience you want to create, pretend that you’re the guest. What are the things that make you smile? What makes you feel good? What has you telling others about the experience you’ve just had? Whatever your answer, that’s where you start for ideas of things that you could do. Because it’s these little touches that make you stand out. It’s no longer a “place to stay”. It’s an experience you want to have. And that brings me to our final suggestion…

Instead, we just sent an email out to our list and communicated on social media that we had an opening. Those dates were booked again within 48 hours! Guests love to feel a part of something. And when they have a way to stay connected after their stay, it’s a constant reminder of the great experience they had with you. Don’t hope that people remember. Be intentional and remind them of the memories and special moments that were created while staying at your property. It keeps you top of mind and it leads to a lot more rebookings.

Element #3 - The Follow Up AFTER The Stay Your guests' stay is just the beginning. Don’t pass the opportunity to continue communicating with your guests. You can do this in a couple of ways. One - Start a social media account. Have you ever considered naming your property? Giving it a name and sharing updates and guests reviews on social media is a great way to stay connected to your past guests, but also attract new guests. Two - Where you can, collect your guest’s email address. If they’re willing this is also a great way to stay in touch. Sending out a monthly letter or seasonal newsletter letting them know about when the summer calendar opens or maybe the new outdoor sauna you have installed, will keep that memory alive and they will want to come back and visit. Better yet, when you have cancellations, you can use this list and your social media account to share about it, and fill that spot fast. We recently had a guest cancel because of an unfortunate family emergency. But we don’t get frustrated and refuse a refund (like I’ve seen far too many hosts do).

At the end of the day, success with your short-term rental isn’t a big mystery. It’s about listening before your guests arrive, incorporating some little touches during their stay and maintaining contact after they leave. As Maya Angelou once said, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

love LITTLE grows best in HOUSES. My grandparents had 10 children. All were born in an 18-year span from the oldest to youngest, so there was a point in time that all 12 members lived under 1 roof. My mom, aunts and uncles often spoke of their childhood with deep affection. There was never a sense that they didn’t have enough, whether that be food, clothing, or even space. When my oldest uncle married and moved away, my mom and I moved back in after her divorce. The best parts of my childhood were spent in my grandparents’ home. Like the others, I never felt that there was less of anything. When I realized years later that the home was less than 1200 sq. ft., with only 4 bedrooms for all of us, I couldn’t comprehend it. It never felt small. We were always crowded into the living room and kitchen, sometimes spilling over into the porch and yard. The space felt expansive to me, brimming with laughter and food and a lot of love. When they left that house and moved to another, only slightly bigger, the branches of our family tree had begun to expand with spouses and grandkids. By the time I was a teen, our weekend get togethers were sometimes 50+ strong. There were kids running around the yard, through the front door and out through the back, voices raised in excitement. The men would often be gathered outside, around a crawfish pot or big black cast iron pot where large batches of jambalaya were made. The women, my grandmother, mom, and aunts, could be found in the kitchen. As the oldest, I would gravitate towards them. I loved listening to them talk and watching my grandmother preparing some of my favorite dishes. Those sounds and smells are still with me, years after that old house was torn down and many of its inhabitants no longer with us. Even after I married and became a mom myself, I found that I was always more at home in smaller spaces. As my family expanded from 2, to 4 and then to 7, we did buy a bigger home. It is what I told myself I wanted. After all, there was that sense that with success, came bigger everything. From cars, to vacations, to the homes we lived in. But even though we had 5 bedrooms, my kids would still sneak in to sleep with us many nights. They loved snuggling in our bed talking until they fell asleep. When we moved to the living room with the big sectional, we only took up half the space, preferring to sit close together as we watched movies or our favorite TV shows.

And there was no better place to be than in our kitchen, where I would bake and cook with them and tell them stories of being in my grandmothers’ kitchen, while making many of her favorite dishes. After my oldest 3 graduated and left home, we sold that house and planned to build another. The new home was in fact even bigger. We found 8 beautiful acres and began planning the construction, but our plans were deterred by a low appraisal and a 500-year flood. As we regrouped and decided how to move forward, we ended up buy an existing home in the community that was much smaller than the one we planned to build.


We told ourselves it was temporary as we worked through appraisal issues and planned out how to address the flooding on our land. That “short term” living situation extended from 1 year to 3. Then the pandemic hit, and my niece and nephew came to live with us. One of the best things to come out of that time was the ability to slow down, re-access and prioritize. I realized that I loved the space we were in. I loved being with my family, even as we were forced to spend much more time with each other that we normally would. I scrapped the plans I had and created new ones. I thought about what mattered most. I remembered what brought me the happiest moments of my childhood; the people and the places that brought me the most joy. That is how I began the design of my new home, focusing on the spaces that we loved being in, the things we loved doing together. As I sketched everything out, I realized that the house I was planning was becoming smaller. While it still had higher ceilings, and lots of windows, there were less walls separating us. It was less of a house and more of a home. Like the lyrics in the 1994 song by Doug Stone, “Little Houses” - “This place is pretty small, but you know, love grows best in little houses with fewer walls”. The love my grandparents created in that little Acadian all those years ago spanned generations. The depth of that love was not restricted by the confines of the space that they lived in. It is something that has stayed with me as I raised my family and continued their legacy. Perhaps love does grow best in little houses.

TINY HOMES In the last 5 years we have seen an increase in interest of smaller homes and tiny houses. Homes built in 2020 had a median square footage of 2,261, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. That is down from 2,467 in 2015. People are choosing to downsize the space they live in, simplify, and live with less. The movement is about more than simply living in a small space. The roots of the tiny house movement can be traced to 19th-Century US naturalist and essayist Henry David Thoreau, whose book Walden (circa 1854), is an inspiring reflection on simple living in natural surroundings. In the small town of Greycliff, Montana, just an hour and a half drive from Yellowstone, you will find the Greycliff Mill. On the surface, the charming rustic barn and gristmill serves as a café and local attraction. When you dig a little deeper, you will find the building is deeply steeped in early American History, dating back to Pre-Revolutionary War times. The barn itself was salvaged by the timber frame company operated by The Gristmill’s owner, Matthew Brandstadt. They specialize in restoring historic barns and have rebuilt more than 300 over the course of 20 years. They have also sourced reclaimed timberwood from thousands of other barns throughout the country, which could not be salvaged in their entirety. When clients hire them to build homes and event centers from the reclaimed wood, Matt does his best to source similar materials for the builds that are comparable in age and condition.

When Matt found the barn that would become the Gristmill in upstate New York, he immediately recognized that it was something special. He had been searching for a timber frame structure that he could turn into a fully functioning gristmill. Built sometime between 1740-1760 in Cobleskill, NY, the traditional Dutch frame structure was one of the few barns left standing after the British marched though the valley during the war. “Their goal was to strike the colonies by destroying their food sources”, explained Elisa Sherman, the Gristmills manager. “Somehow, this barn was left intact.” It not only survived the attacks, but the passing of time. Matt decided that he wanted to bring it to his family's Montana ranch, and in early summer of 2020 his crew began dismantling the structure and by the fall it was on its journey to find new life some 2,000 plus miles across the country. “The actual process of sourcing these types of buildings in preparation for them to be re-built elsewhere is quite intensive”, Elisa explained. The hand-hewn beams were joined by interlocking the beams using a method called “joinery”. The entire frames, including posts, joists, girts, and rafters, are made from different sizes of wooden beams. What is unique to timber frame barns is the way in which these pieces are joined. Typically, they are connected by using a technique that notches the wood into “female” and “male” connectors and then joining the pieces together with wooden pegs. “That means that each piece is unique and must be marked once it is dissembled, so you know how to put it back together”. Once the barn reached its destination at Matt’s facility in Big Timber, he began searching for a gristmill that he could incorporate into the design. He found that piece of the puzzle in South Carolina. The gristmill itself is believed to have been built around 1874, as evidenced by markings in the wood. The French stone, Queen of the South stone mill was powered by water and had only recently stopped being used. Once purchased, the gristmill made its own trek across the country and found new purpose in Greycliff. Matt reached out to his friend, Elisa Sherman to partner on the project as the General Manager and miller. Elisa, originally from Texas, had moved to Big Timber 5 years prior to run a bakery. One of his first jobs was running a mill very similar to the one Matt was envisioning. “I was really excited about the possibility of working with an older gristmill. Milling flour is a craft that I really enjoy.” There was a great deal of planning and research that led up to the opening. Once the foundation of the structure itself was laid, Matt and Elisa were deeply involved in laying the groundwork for the mill and restaurant and the mission behind it.

From the menu they would ultimately offer, to the feeling of warmth and welcome they hoped to evoke for guests once they entered, the Greycliff Mill family were determined to create something special. An experience that visitors would not easily forget. Before they could put all their carefully laid plans to work, the construction of the restaurant and mill itself had to be completed. In August of 2020, amidst the early days of the pandemic, site work and foundation were started. By the fall, the timber was on site and erection started. When asked if they encountered any setbacks during construction, Elisa stated that there were a few. Despite shattered glass and material and labor challenges, the project ultimately was finished in record time. Part of that was due to having a schedule to adhere to because the restoration was being chronicled on Restoration Road with Clint Harp on HGTV. Having their origin story documented in such a public way was both challenging and rewarding for all involved. By spring of 2021, when many other establishments were still closed, Greycliff Mill was working towards making their debut. During this time the team worked on sourcing the finest whole wheat flour to begin milling. They also experimented with the menu, including coffees, bagels, sandwiches, and wraps. One thing they wanted to expand on upon opening was a specialized menu that would offer farm to table fare.

“We really wanted to create a true farm to table experience, utilizing the natural resources that surrounded us.” Elisa explained. “Everything that we serve is sourced locally. The beef is raised just 10 miles away, the produce is local, the milk is from the cows on the ranch and the rolls, bagels and other pastries are all made from the flour from the mill.” The goal was to have the coffee and bagel bar be opened to the public daily and then have Bi-Weekly farm to table dinners. Prior to opening their doors, there was some concern about how far out of the way they were located. They were not sure if people would be willing to travel the distance to have coffee and bagels. One of the saving graces was the location off I-90 going to Yellowstone. The mill is an hour and a half from the park’s main entrance. The popularity of the Yellowstone TV series written by Taylor Sheridan and starring Kevin Costner, bolstered Montana tourism even more.


All these things may have factored into the mill’s success when it finally opened its doors, but it is something more that kept them coming back. Since opening, over 30,000 people trekked through in the first 6 months. It was much more than Matt and Elisa could have imagined. Their first call was from a Colorado Springs resident who booked a farm-to-table experience and drove over 8 hours. Since that time, they have had every state in the country represented and have even had international visitors from as far as South Africa, Israel and New Zealand. Although most of their guests come from Billings and Bozeman, it has been exciting to see so many visitors traveling so far to come out and experience all that Greycliff Mill has to offer. Aside from the amazing fresh food prepared, there is an ambiance that the history of the building naturally creates.

People love hearing about the stories behind it and can see that history is reflected in the deep grooves and rich character of the posts and beams around them. The early success is something that the team hoped for and eagerly celebrates. It allowed them to start implementing other plans for the property earlier than they expected. The first step in that was opening an Airbnb on the ranch. About a quarter of a mile from the restaurant sits a log cabin that was original to the property. Built sometime between the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, the 1 bed, 1 bath home allows its guests to step back in time and imagine what it was like at the turn of the 20th century. With the popularity of the Airbnb, there are plans to add 2-5 more in the next few years. The expansion also includes an underground creamery, fish tanks to raise trout and a large greenhouse. In addition, there is an open-air event center offering a bridal suite and kitchen. All are set to be open later this year, with the first wedding already booked for 2023! In a time where people are craving connection- to others, to nature and all that both promises, Greycliff Mill is uniquely positioned to provide the space where they can come together. “Our mission is to create an environment where people come to relax, hangout, unwind and experience life to its fullest” Elisa continues. Cynthia Berman, property host of FOAL HOUSE FALLBROOK said that early four years ago, they left Los Angeles and bought a 4-acre farm in Fallbrook, California, known as the Avocado Capital. It was not their intention to buy a farm, although I she referred to herself as an accidental farmer. Her property has over 120 avocado trees and various fruit trees. The ranch house was built in the '70s along with the cinderblock pole barn. At the start of the pandemic, she lost two jobs and turned her energy and creativity into transforming the horse barn into a luxury country getaway for short-term rental. Foal House Fallbrook is a 1200 square foot barndominium converted from a horse barn. The interior is designed to reflect country living with hints of farm life, vintage furnishings, repurposed farm equipment, and all that makes the area unique. The barn is a short drive from wine country, wedding venues, hiking trails, and the beach. Foal House Fallbrook is an excellent opportunity for people to take a break from the city and enjoy a relaxing time in the country. We first opened for guests in February 2021. We are also available for photoshoots. It has been a heartwarming experience to share the barndo with people.

About the property Our property is a quiet and relaxing getaway nestled in the mountains between the ocean and wine country . Fallbrook is a charming rural community known for being the avocado capital. Many people choose to stay in Fallbrook instead of Temecula because of its small-town feel, acreage of homes, close proximity to Temecula, & cooler weather. Spring is a time for vacations and vacation rentals with family and friends. A time to laugh, eat , drink and play! Food should be fun and simple! I believe that vacations are the perfect time for cheat recipes. You know the store bought shortcuts that make it easy to get back to what you came there for! So here are 3 recipes that are simple easy peasy cheats that can look like a million bucks instead of a cheat! I am also using a Rotisserie Chicken for the main dish and the appetizer so you get 2 dishes for the price of one.

BBQ Chicken & Slaw Sliders Ingredients: Rotisserie Chicken (I used half of it) BBQ Sauce (Get what you like) Bag of Slaw Slaw Dressing Kings Hawaiian Sliders (I used the Walmart brand) Prepare your slaw and set aside. You can always use store made coleslaw as well. Shred half of the rotisserie chicken and pour in your bbq sauce and mix together and set aside. Then use a bread knife to cut your rolls because they are so soft and add on your bbq chicken and top with slaw.

Oreo Ice Cream Cake Ingredients: Oreos (I used the thin ones but use what you want) Ice cream Sandwiches (I used the Walmart brand) Cool Whip (I used the Walmart brand) Line a metal pan with ice cream sandwiches (I cut them to fit the pan). Top with a cool whip. Then add crushed Oreos to the top. If you have a big crowd you can double the layers. Place it in the freezer and serve when ready. I also sometimes use Reese's instead so make it your own.

Toasted Sesame Lettuce Wraps Ingredients: Rotisserie Chicken (The remaining half) Asian Toasted Sesame Dressing (I used lite Kraft) Lettuce (I used green leafy but romaine is great too) Shred the remainder of your chicken and pour in a little of the asian toasted sesame dressing at your own discretion. After you have washed and dried your lettuce, fill them with the chicken mixture. Place them on a platter and drizzle with a little more dressing on the top.

TIP: Pay off your credit card before the closing date instead of the due date. If you’ve reached this part, congratulations! You’re well on your way to getting a fresh start on your credit! As a final reminder, regularly review your score and report. If you see issues, take care of them as soon as possible. Establishing smart financial habits is the best way to keep a healthy credit history and score.

We used true 6x6 marine grade poles spaced 12ft apart, a vaulted clear span scissor truss and all poplar wood interior finish, building it as we do all of our other structures. Located on the Slivinski Ranch deep in Santa Fe Texas, the Barn is nestled under 4 beautiful oak trees, the chapel over looks the pond and it's so secluded you will forget you are just miles away from the 4th largest city in the US. I think most of us are seriously ready for warmer weather and Springtime energy. The weather, especially when it is harsh, can definitely effect the way we feel inside our bodies. In order to prepare for the change in season, let's concentrate on the most crucial area of our body, the center! I am a firm believer that duration does not equate positive results. We do not need to be working out for hours at a time in order to heal past injuries, or to become incredibly fit. What is required however, is the dedication to truly understanding what it means and what it takes to having a strong core. Learning the muscles of the back, the sides, and the front of our bodies is essential to recruiting your core muscles correctly and effectively. When you do this, there are no limits to how strong and aware you can become. This term, “core” is thrown around like confetti. Unfortunately, there are doctors, chiropractors, physical therapists and trainers, alike out there who bark at their clients and patients and tell them to strengthen their core. This creates massive confusion and doubt, making it challenging for people to gain momentum and achieve their desired results. We will cut to the chase here, and use verbiage and even imagery you may have not experienced before. I have witnessed clients of my own, (after using these techniques and methodologies) who’ve had C-sections and hernias, and even tummy tucks regain strength and awareness in the abdominals.

Their core is forever strong, and will always protect their spine. Please follow along and learn these few exercises to lay your foundation, and feel what it really means to work and challenge your core musculature. Renew the commitment to yourself, while turning a new leaf for this season of Spring! Bird Dog-start on all 4’s and reach your right arm in front of you at shoulder height. Lift your left leg at height. Hold for 3 breaths. Change sides. Repeat for 5x on each side. No shifting side to side, as you change. Minimize the movement and force the body to move with efficiency. This will challenge your abdominals and increase your proprioception (body awareness). Table Top-lying on your back, bring both knees above your hips to create a 90 degree angle at the hip and the knee. Your shins should now be parallel to the floor and sky. Hold for 5 full breaths. Pull knees to chest to rest. Repeat 5x. Most trainers will tell you to pull your navel to your spine, or press your spine to the floor. I will not. I ask that you pull your muscles IN and UP toward your throat. I call this, “pulling North.” As you continue to pull North, while holding the legs at table top, you will feel the challenge provided by gravity! Luxury Barndominiums Magazine | Issue #5

The Hundred-lying on your back, find table top position, or extend both legs in front of you at between 90 and 45 degrees. If you have any back issues, soften your knees toward your chest to eliminate compensation. Lift your head and look down your body. If you have neck issues, you may do this without lifting the head. Start to pump your arms up and down about five inches and apply resistance, like you are trying to push a ball beneath the surface of water. Inhale for five pumps, exhale for five pumps. Repeat 10x. If lung capacity is an issue, try this for 3 inhales and exhales for each repetition. Scissors-lying on your back, reach both legs to 45 degrees, or higher with bent knees of there is a back issue. Curl head forward to look down your body. Bring your right leg into your hands and the left hovers over the floor. Change sides. Repeat 10x for 3 sets. All the while, pull those abdominals North!

You are not to “suck in” your tummy! You are to lift the low abdominals and feel like they are floating up toward your throat-the entire exercise! Use the image of a straw, if that helps. Pull your abdominals up through a straw, engaging front, sides, and back muscles. This is not a fast or easy fix. This is challenging, but I guarantee it will create STRENGTH AND AWARENESS! Let’s jazz up a traditional snack that has taken parties by storm!

As a nutrition chef, my mind is always in the mode of creating new recipes that are delicious, but also serve our bodies with nourishment. We can have both, and it’s my mission to show you that. Wedding season is here, and with that comes stress, long hours, meetings, and endless decisions. And most often, during these exciting times in our life, we neglect our nutrition. For lack of time, our food choices are last on the list of priorities, and sadly, that is when we need nutrition the most. But healthy choices can be very overwhelming at the grocery store due to all the advertising that companies do on the packages. Until you become an expert and seek the packaged foods that are genuinely good for you, it is always a guarantee that when you whip up your own recipes, you know exactly what’s in your food; taking complete control over your health.

Over the years, I have fallen in love with hummus. It’s on most kitchen tables at parties, and you see it in all the grocery stores. But sadly, in recent years, these popular hummus companies are starting to cut corners (to save money) and are using not-so-good ingredients in their hummus; like refined oils. Oils like canola, palm, and vegetable to name a few are very inflammatory to our bodies. They are ridden with chemicals our body doesn’t recognize. That’s why I like to make my own hummus. Did you know traditional hummus is made with Extra Virgin Olive Oil? This oil is a very good source of healthy fat and has minerals in it that support our overall health (and helps lower inflammation). These 2 recipes are so quick to make but will leave your taste buds wanting more. Not only is hummus a good dip but it’s also a wonderful spread on a sandwich or wrap so you can take in on the go! And if you have hummus at your next wedding or dinner party, be sure to avoid the ones with canola oil!

GREEN GODDESS HUMMUS A Recipe by Shelley Loving

INGREDIENTS 1 can Chickpeas ¼ cup Chickpea Liquid (reserve from the can) ¼ cup Tahini ¼ cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil (or a little less) 1 cup Baby Spinach ½ cup Parsley (roughly chopped) 3 tbsps Lemon Juice 1 stalk Green Onion (roughly chopped) 2 Garlic (cloves) ½ tsp Cumin 1 tsp Sea Salt & Black Pepper

PROCESS 1 Add everything to a high-speed blender and blend until smooth. You may need to add more chickpea liquid.

2 Place in a serving bowl and top with extra olive oil and parsley if desired.

INGREDIENTS 1 Beet (peeled & roasted) ¼ cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil 1 tbsp Raw Honey 1 Lemon (Juice & zest) 2 tbsps Tahini 3 tbsps Apple Cider Vinegar 2 cups Chickpeas (1 can drained and rinsed) 1 Garlic 1 Jalapeno Pepper (deseeded) 1 tsp Sea Salt & Black Pepper (to taste)

PROCESS 1 .After your beet has been roasted and cool, place everything in a high-speed blender until smooth. 2. You can use this as a spread or a dip 3 . Add water to thin it for a dressing 4. This is a great recipe to dip vegetables or use as a spread on a wrap or sandwich

Finding the perfect wedding location is no small feat! The venue you choose will set the tone of your big day so whether you’re looking to get married in a breathtaking barn, an elegant ballroom, a cozy restaurant, or even a quiet stretch of beach, choosing your venue must be done with great care. I’ve rounded up 5 factors you need to immediately decide on to help you narrow down your options and come up with a venue that’s right for you. Let’s get started!

The Wedding Date Selecting a season and some potential dates for your wedding will be helpful as you start to engage with venues and try to lock in a save-the-date. Keep in mind that the season you choose has bearing on what the rest of your wedding will look like. As you finalize the time of year, also consider weather constraints. Ask questions, such as, what on-site plans does the venue have in case of rain? If the wedding is during the day, what additional installations are allowed on site?

The Wedding Budget Once you’ve picked a date, the second thing that you want to be thinking about is how much can you afford to spend. It is important to recognize that venues with in-house catering, like hotels and resorts, will charge a price per plate, in addition to the venue fee. TIP: When you’re working with a limited budget, you may want to select a venue that approves external catering and already offers a similar look to your desired wedding style. If the venue does not already have your preferred aesthetic, trying to totally transform the venue will also drive up the cost.

The Size of the Wedding How many people are you planning to host? Answer this by preparing your guest list, not forgetting to take into account, the people who will play major roles during the wedding. Conclude on the guest count before hunting for venues. Have in mind that the maximum capacity of a room isn’t always the comfortable point. Make sure to ask how many people the space can comfortably seat and what’s allowed. Equally important to consider are the logistical requirements so don’t forget to consider other installations that may eat into the space. Examples would be the dance floor, a place for the projector, an area for the live band, and the like.

The Wedding Style Start by creating the perfect mood board. A wedding mood board is a carefully curated collection of photos that convey your wedding vision -the look, essence, and feeling you are hoping to create through your design. Choose a venue that aligns with your vision. It is important to seek out venues that fit the aesthetic that you’re working with. As a rule of thumb, both the ceremony and reception sites should share one, cohesive look. TIP: If you’re planning a dreamy, yet modern wedding, consider an upscale hotel ballroom or well-designed restaurant spaces. On the flipside, if you’re planning a rustic wedding with lots of natural earthy tones, consider outdoor venues with beautiful wooden elements.

Proximity Ultimately, there are three points you need to consider here: your dress-up location, the ceremony site and the reception site. It is important to think about how comfortable your guests will be and answering these questions can help you decide which venue will be the best for you: Will the ceremony and reception be held in the same place? If not, how far are they from each other? How easy is it to get to? What is the walking or driving distance from the ceremony site to the reception site and from the reception site to the after-party? As you think about these things, also consider the road network and make sure that are easily connected to public transport.

The business as usual attitude of the locals, despite the nearly perfect weather and time of year makes this an even more Impressive destination. There are no gimmicks or tourist traps here. What you see is what you get, and that level of sincerity is just part of the appeal of this area. Book yourself a stay at the Spearfish Canyon Lodge for something a bit fancy, or reserve time at Beneath the Pines for a more rustic experience. You’ll want to cozy up to a bowl simmering buffalo stew, or newly caught fish from the creek at Latchstring Restaurant. Don't hesitate to fan out and explore what draws the most to this history-filled state, of course. The main attractions are just a hop, skip, and jump away. But I guarantee, you'll be itching to return to the tongue wagging beauty, and utter serenity of Spearfish Canyon…and tuck this experience away as one of your all time favorites.

However, tucked between famous filming locals, shoot outs, and land claims, is a canyon so beautiful, your breath will be something of the past. As we traveled south in our car on a land search trek for a barndominium build, we came around a bend and my heart started palpitating. The immeasurable beauty that lay before us brought tears to my eyes. Spearfish Creek is a narrow but deep gorge, whose power carved the canyon before us. I had to ask my husband to slow his driving pace and even stop the car so I could savor being along the creek and attempt to peer into the thick trees for any sign of civilization. The water rushing over rocks, paired with the pine nettles moving about in the gentle wind was the only sound our ears could detect as we gazed at the Black Hills before us. We then found a sweet restaurant that lay in front of us and attracted cyclists, fisherman, and other nature enthusiasts, offering them fresh and yummy bites to savor.

South Dakota is well known for its pioneer origins and wonderful western tales. The cities of Custer, Keystone, and Deadwood boast enormous energy from the very colorful and rich stories of the Gold Rush.
