Welcome Credit Suisse Jersey International Motoring Festival 2010 Programme introduction by Roy McGregor, Chief Executive Officer, Credit Suisse Channel Islands

C

redit Suisse is delighted to be supporting the Jersey International Motoring Festival for a third successive year. Last year’s festival attracted more than 100 participants from Jersey, the UK and Europe, who joined thousands of islanders in enjoying the wide range of events over the weekend. We are proud to give our support to an event that is enjoyed by so many of our community and also attracts visitors to Jersey. Such events rely on the enthusiasm of the organisers and we would like to thank everybody involved in making the weekend a success.

T

he Classic and Vintage Motor Racing Club of Jersey has this year put on what we hope to be a spectacle for all interested in motorsport, ranging from the touring and static show of classic and vintage cars to a demonstration of F1 cars to coincide with the 60th Anniversary of Grand Prix racing. We are also demonstrating some Crescent Suzuki World Super Bikes so there will hopefully be something for everyone encompassed in a whole weekend Festival for visitors and locals to enjoy free of charge. Steve Salmon President The Classic & Vintage Motor Racing Club of Jersey

I

am pleased to welcome yet again the Credit Suisse Jersey International Motoring Festival, which brings together enthusiasts having a variety of interests. As many readers will know, I have had an ongoing interest in classic cars, which continues to this day, although sadly I do not have the opportunity for the same lavel of involvement. Occasions such as this can only serve to stimulate and encourage interest from new enthusiasts, who I know will be supported by existing members of the Classic and Vintage Car Club and other related organisations. I thank all those who have organised or who are participating in this year's event, which hopefully will set new and growing standards as well as reminding us of aspects of our motoring history. Senator Terry Le Sueur Chief Minister

Produced by Barnes Publishing Jersey, Tel: (01534) 618166

T

he Parish of St. Helier welcomes participants in the 2010 Jersey International Festival of Motoring. The races, cavalcades and static displays involving so many fine vintage cars, motorbikes and other features, provide a fantastic spectacle to our residents and visitors, and I am extremely grateful to everyone who is taking part in this year's festival. This year's festival includes a new element, the arena at West Park, and I am keenly looking forward to the extra value this will bring to the weekend. I am confident that the variety of races and exhibitions laid on by the organisers will provide our visitors with great entertainment and interest, and I wish everyone involved in the weekend's events a safe, enjoyable and spectacular festival. Constable Simon Crowcroft Parish of St Helier

History of Karting

T

he Jersey Kart & Car Club celebrates 50 years of kart racing in Jersey this year and is delighted to be participating in the Festival for the second year running with demonstrations around the “circuit”. Karting started at the Belle Vue Track at Quennevais in early May 1960 with Lord Louth and the Lieutenant Governor starting the first race. The original track was a simple design but karting proved so popular that the track was closed just a few months later in order for a more intricate circuit to be swiftly developed.

Interestingly, the organisation of regulated kart racing was a requirement of the Planning consent for the track. Many Islanders and visitors have fond memories also of “racing” the hire karts available at the track. Programmes featuring 200+ racers for international events included Guernsey drivers, French teams, the British forces and visitors from other countries. Ex F1 team owner, Eddie Jordan, remembers his Jersey karting days with great enthusiasm and former F1 driver Derek Warwick also participated – including at the emotional final race meeting before the developers moved in to convert the site to housing.

The 50th Anniversary is being marked with a number of events and an exciting initiative to create a permanent facility at Sorel. The initial consultation process has commenced and it is hoped that this will provide a positive thrilling experience – primarily for Island youngsters. Karting is an exciting but disciplined hobby with cadet racers commencing at 8 years old; racers progress through 3 categories, based on age, all using the 125cc Rotax engine and the top class is the fabulous 125 Open category – using geared karts capable of up to 85mph. We wish the Jersey International Festival of Motoring great success and look forward to welcoming visitors to watch the kart demonstrations and to the Jersey Kart & Car Club stand where full details of the track plans are available.

FORCE FORMULA 1

During the 2009 racing season Formula One Race Car Entrants, or FORCE, were the primary organisers of, or took part in, a number of exciting and high profile events. FORCE has, over more than twenty years, established a reputation for delivering high quality grids tailored to meet the requirements of the

BENETTON B192 - SCHUMACHER In the nineties the regulators tried to slow the cars down. The designers adopted more and more technology and lap times fell constantly. Weird and wonderful shapes linked to engines revving to 20,000 produced a spectacular show.

BRM P261 - STEWART

WILLIAMS FW06 DFV - JONES

The BRM P261 was an absolutely superb jewel of a car and probably the best of the 1.5 litre Formula . Lead driver Graham Hill was joined by Jackie Stewart in 1965 and ran the Lotus 33 of Jim Clark close, on occasions beating the Flying Scotsman so it must have been a great little car !. Jackie could well be described as 'the Lewis Hamilton of his day' having a meteoric rise through the ranks to Formula 1 and winning a World Championship Grand Prix at Monza in his first season.

Frank Williams and Patrick Head, names which for thirty years have gone together like Bonnie & Clyde or Marks & Spencer... but back in the winter of 1977 who could have predicted the future of this partnership ? Frank had finally turned the financial corner, this time to his relief finding that nobody was round there waiting for him ! And Patrick at last had the budget and freedom to design a complete car. The light and compact FW06 chassis was the last and most successful of the cars before ground effect aerodynamics changed the face of Formula 1 for ever.

With more than twenty years of experience as organisers of Motor Sport Events, including working closely with the World Governing Body the FIA, FORCE is in pole position to provide the event which you want to satisfy your criteria.

Our vast range of contracts not only in the field of Historic Racing but also Modern Formula 1 can provide grids of cars from the birth of racing through to the present day. In paricular they are convinced

David & Lorina McLaughlin have encompassed the entire field. TOLEMAN TG 184 - SENNA

RENAULT FW18 - HILL

In the mid eighties came the most powerful Formula 1 cars of all time, from just 1500cc the engineers soon produced engines delivering more than 1000 horsepower. The Drivers could just hang on for the ride but some, such as Rosberg, Mansell and Senna harnessed the horses!

The Williams FW18 brought together all of the skills of Patrick Head and Adrian Newey; was there ever a more formidable combination. The Williams had great pace and rock solid reliability and was powered by the magnificent Renault V10 engine. Drivers Damon Hill and Jaques Villeneuve scored no less than twelve Grand Prix wins between them, threatened only by Schumacher who had now made the switch to Ferrari. Damon won three Grands Prix in this chassis on his way to being the first man to emulate his father as Formula 1 World Champion.

GATHERING OF SUZUKIS AT MOTORING FESTIVAL A SPECIAL attraction for the fans of two wheels will be a gathering of Suzukis from the GSX-R sportsbike range. This year marks 25 years since the launch of the iconic and legendary Suzuki GSX-R 750. To mark the occasion a collection of the various GSX-R models produced between 1985 and 2010 will be on display on the People’s Park on Sunday 6 June. The Festival will have a special appeal to motorcycle fans since Crescent Suzuki are bringing over a number of racing machines and it is hoped that among them will be the GSX-R ridden by Tom Sykes in the

World Superbike Championship, Kevin Schwantz’s RG500 Grand Prix bike and a more recent GSV-R Moto GP bike ridden by Loris Capirossi. The event will give fans a rare opportunity to take a close up look at top class racing machinery. Festival organiser Steve Salmon says, “These Suzukis are amongst the most exciting machines on two wheels and will be a major attraction for all bike fans.”

R4D: A BRIEF HISTORY

E

.R.A. (English Racing Automobiles) R4D may be familiar to some of our older spectators. The car is returning to Jersey after a considerable hiatus, for it came third in the Jersey International Road Races of 1947 and 1949.

R4D is the last development of the classic E.R.A. design. First built as a 2 litre B-type in 1935, the works modified the car into a C-type, and finally a D-type, in which form it first competed in 1938. With Dr. Porsche-designed independent front suspension and a fully boxed chassis, R4D was the only D-type ever built. Featuring a straight six of just under 2-litres, and burning methanol in its hemispherical combustion chambers, the car still produces over 300 bhp. R4D spent most of its early life driven by Raymond Mays, initially for the E.R.A. works, then as his personal car. At one time the car held virtually every hill climb and sprint record in the UK, and continued competing successfully well into the 1950’s in the hands of drivers such as Ron Flockhart and Ken Wharton.

In Mays’ hands R4D won the RAC Hill Climb championship in 1947 and 1948. Ron Flockhart was so successful with R4D in 1953 that he became a works driver for BRM the following year, going on to have works drives with Connaught, Aston Martin, Lotus and Cooper as well as winning Le Mans twice in Ecurie Ecosse Jaguars. Ken Wharton bought R4D from Flockhart, and alternated between R4D and a Cooper-JAP to win the RAC Hill Climb Championship in 1954 and to come first equal in 1955. Raced brilliantly in vintage competition by the late Anthony Mayman, R4D now competes regularly in the hands of Mac Hulbert. In his ownership, R4D has set new pre-war records at such venues as Silverstone, Avon Raceway, Shelsley Walsh, Colerne and Loton Park. Indeed, R4D has had more FTD's at Shelsley Walsh and Brighton than any car in history. R4D is still a quick car by modern standards. In 2002, R4D reached 120 mph at the end of a 12.33 second standing-start quarter mile, achieving 146 mph at the end of the standing kilometre.
