What’s new? Baby gorilla joins the troop at Jersey Zoo Durrell celebrated the birth of a baby western lowland gorilla at Jersey Zoo late last year, when 25-year-old Bahasha gave birth to a beautiful baby. Gordon Hunt, Deputy Head of Mammals, said: “The entire team at Durrell is absolutely thrilled with the news and we are so pleased that Bahasha and her infant are doing well. This birth is a great success for Durrell and the western lowland gorilla captive breeding programme. With this species being severely threatened in the wild, every newborn is an important addition to the captive population.”
Channel Islands join the Liberation Route Jersey has become a member of the international Remembrance Trail and is now part of the Liberation Route Europe, which shares WWII knowledge and stories with the general public. Jersey’s liberation-related points of interest for the route include Elizabeth Castle, Liberation Square and Noirmont Point. Visitors can follow a digital route via the website or mobile app, which enables them to navigate points of interest along the route. They are then provided with written, pictorial, audio and video histories of the locations and their role in the liberation of Europe during WWII. Chris Addy, Sites Curator at Jersey Heritage, said: “We hope that our involvement in the initiative will help to raise awareness of the unique Channel Islands perspective, and encourage visitors to follow in the footsteps of our liberators, particularly in the year of the 75th anniversary.”

Grand designs for Jersey Airport Jersey Airport’s £42m revamp, launched by Ports of Jersey, will see the eventual removal of airfield obstacles, construction of a new integrated departures and arrivals facility, and relocation of the airport’s rescue and fire service building, as well as construction of a new two-storey passenger pier. On behalf of Ports of Jersey, Group CEO Matt Thomas said: “This project is one of the most significant construction projects undertaken on the island in recent years. In effect, we are creating a ‘new’ airport, which ultimately will future-proof our operational needs, meet the growth ambitions of our airline partners and provide a fantastic travel experience for our customers.”

National Trust for Jersey and The Jersey Royal Company have joined forces to plant thousands of metres of native hedgerow corridors throughout Jersey to reduce the island’s carbon footprint and boost biodiversity. Over 30 species of birds on the island rely on hedges for nesting and the RSPB reports that hedgerows support up to 80% of woodland birds, 50% of mammals, up to 30% of butterfly species, and provide a valuable habitat for amphibians. Additionally, a well-managed 100m length of mature hedgerow has the potential to sequester or store up to 120kg of Co2 per year, contributing to the island’s aim of becoming carbon neutral within the next decade. National Trust for Jersey stated: “We have been able to initiate an immensely important hedgerow restoration project, which will secure enormous environmental benefits for the island in the longer term. We hope to be able to further develop this initial pilot project in years to come.”

big interview
s I travel up Gilbert O’Sullivan’s long steep driveway, tucked away in the Jersey countryside, I can immediately see why this notoriously private man decided to call this place home. Nestled deep within the greenery of this small island, his home is hidden from prying eyes, providing the much coveted solace craved by many a celebrity. Upon arrival I am greeted warmly by O’Sullivan’s brother, Kevin, who had arranged for me to interview him during a hiatus in his latest tour. I am guided up a grand, sweeping staircase leading to his studio where I discover an eclectic array of CDs, vinyl albums, handwritten notes and photographs, spanning back decades, littering the room. Gilbert walks into the room, a seemingly shy and unassuming figure with his trademark hair and casual look. We take a seat and he apologises as I try to avoid stepping on the albums which blanket the floor. I appreciate it’s an organised chaos that only he fully understands, and we start chatting.
O’Sullivan at the start of his solo rise to fame
This artistic freedom allowed him to develop his own style and forge a successful career in the music industry. Although the band recorded a couple of songs at a demo studio in London, he wanted to be a solo artist, so in 1966 when the band broke up, he headed to London in search of a career.
Back story
The big break
Born Raymond Edward O’Sullivan in Waterford, Ireland in 1946, the man we now know as Gilbert O’Sullivan moved to the UK with his family in 1953, settling in Swindon. It was here that he discovered a love of music, growing up in an era of change, with the likes of The Beatles making way for a new breed of talent. “All my musical background stems from growing up in Swindon,” says O’Sullivan. “I’m proud of my Irish roots, but I’m very much the traditional English songwriter. Before the Beatles there were the likes of Cliff Richard and The Shadows and although we all liked them, we didn’t feel that we could be like them. The Beatles were young, different, and wrote great songs, and that had a huge influence on me.” O’Sullivan’s lifelong interest in music and art developed during his time at Swindon Art College, where he briefly played drums and sang in a band called Rick’s Blues, along with his peers, Malcolm Mabbett on guitar, Keith Ray on bass and founder Rick Davies, on keyboard, who later formed Supertramp. “I started out playing the drums, but as I became a little more musically attuned I concentrated on the piano,” recalls O’SuIlivan. “I spent hours playing the piano in our garden shed, writing and singing. Goodness knows what the neighbours must have thought.”
O’Sullivan found digs in Notting Hill Gate, which he shared with three friends. He secured a Christmas job in C&A, where he met a colleague who had a recording contract with CBS records, so he asked him to pass on his tape. This led to a publishing and recording contract. “When I signed to CBS Records I wanted to create a character for myself because sitting behind a piano isn’t as interesting to watch as a guitar player who can move around,” explains O’Sullivan. “Art school was a magical time – we had a lot of freedom and dressed differently from everyone else and that provided inspiration for my future look.” The signature uniform of cap, hobnailed boots, Charlie Chaplin jacket, football socks and the pudding-basin haircut, was meticulously planned by O’Sullivan, who named this persona Gilbert. This name evolved into Gilbert O’Sullivan when Gordon Mills became his manager. O’Sullivan has enjoyed chart success for nearly five decades thanks to his ability to write great songs and catchy lyrics. Throughout his career he has accumulated three Ivor Novello awards, including Songwriter of the Year in 1973, and amassed 16 top-40 records, with six number-one songs that saw off the likes of Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley and Elton John. “If you’re lucky enough to be able to write melodies and lyrics it isn’t rocket science,” he asserts. “The joy was, as it is today, experimenting with chords and finding a variation which brings a melody into your head. I then work on the lyrics with the Leonard Cohen approach of writing more than is necessary. I may only need three verses, but I just can’t resist writing the sixth.” He reveals that he adopts a disciplined approach to music, working from nine to five in his music room, which he shows me. A grand piano sits in the heart of the modest-sized room with old-school boom boxes on top, which he uses to record his work onto cassette. The walls are covered in hand-written notes, lyrics, photographs of his family and pictures drawn by his children, who are now grown up. It feels like I have stepped inside his mind. A sacred space.

“Jersey greatly appealed to us because...it was a great place for our daughters to grow up”
Backstage at O’Sullivan’s New York sell-out show. L-R: Helen-Marie O’Sullivan-McGoff, Jeannie-Marie McGoff, Tara O’Sullivan, Gilbert O’Sullivan, Aase O’Sullivan
“Even if nothing is achieved, spending all day at the piano is never a waste of time because you’re always practising,” he says. “If you come up with a good melody you lock it away because it will survive any length of time. It’s different with lyrics because I write about things going on in the present, so I only write lyrics once I know they are going to be recorded.” O’Sullivan tells me he is currently working on content for his next album, in between his current tour dates across Japan and America. His latest album, Gilbert O’Sullivan, was produced by Ethan Johns, who has worked with the likes of Kings Of Leon, Paolo Nutini and Paul McCartney. The album, which is available on digipack, CD, vinyl and cassette, and recorded on analogue equipment at his Frobisher Drive Studios in Jersey, features guest appearances from several notable musicians including Andy Fairweather Low on guitar, and Chas Hodges and Geraint Watkins on piano. This album’s collection of songs covers musings on ageing and mortality and includes comic touches, influenced by O’Sullivan’s love of Spike Milligan. The album’s final two songs, The Mind Boggles and For The Record, both tackle serious issues, with references to Donald Trump and homelessness.
Establishing roots During his court case with MAM Records over publishing rights in the early 80s, O’Sullivan moved back to Ireland with his new wife, Aase, and daughter Helen-Marie. They chose to move to Ireland due to the country’s writers’ tax exemption, which provided financial relief during the expensive court process that he went on to win. “Following the court case and subsequent arrival of our second daughter, Tara, we didn’t want to move back to the UK,” explains O’Sullivan. “Jersey greatly appealed to us because, aside from the financial benefits, it was a great place for our daughters to grow up. “I am very happy at home, I am not a social animal and enjoy my privacy. However, Aase made friends really quickly when we first moved here and she really enjoys Jersey life. Of course, when the girls are here we all go out as a family.” Jersey has proved fruitful in more ways than one for O’Sullivan who says the ‘normal’ lifestyle and relative anonymity he enjoys have resulted in a productive working life. “People are always surprised at the difference between my professional and personal personas because they are poles apart,” laughs O’Sullivan. “The marvellous thing about living in Jersey is that I don’t feel any pressure, so it’s been fantastic for me to write here – I love it!”

Road to discovery Jersey may be small, but it has a lot to offer, so make sure you don’t miss out! Although Jersey is modest in size, its winding leafy lanes and coastal roads provide over 350 miles of routes for visitors to explore. Whether you traverse the island by hire-car, coach, bus or pushbike, there are plenty of places to see on your journey. So, sit back and relax while we take you on a tour of the highlights. If you want to travel in style visit Le Riche Restorers, home of Jersey Classic Car Hire, and pick from their range of classic cars, which include the Citroën 2CV Dolly, Triumph Stag and MG Sprite, as well as VW Campervans to get you from A to B. Our first stop is a family favourite, Jersey Zoo – home of the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust. Situated four miles north of St Helier, in the parish of Trinity, it is easily accessible by car, bicycle, bus or coach. Here you will find a range of animals including apes, bears, lemurs, meerkats, reptiles and birds in addition to seasonal activities. If you fancy a meander around the east coast, start at St Catherine’s Breakwater where you can find the Sandwizard, Simon Smith’s giant sandcastle sculpture, and the popular Breakwater Café, with its award-winning ice cream. Next head west towards St Clements to The Botanic Gardens at Samarès Manor, where you’ll find unique plant collections which thrive in Jersey’s exceptionally fertile soil. It’s also home to one of the largest herb gardens in the UK. Now time for some history as you move onto Mont Orgueil Castle in Gorey, one of the world’s finest medieval castles. Here you can discover secret rooms, gruesome tales and hidden treasures. No tour of Jersey would be complete without driving down Five Mile Road, which is, believe it or not, one of the longest roads on the island. This road, which runs

Parking in these areas is chargeable during the evenings and also on Sundays. In Car Parks the charge is variable and you should take a look for the Signs at the entrance and within each car park for details of charges and maximum permitted stay rules. Several car parks are provided for shoppers and have a maximum stay of 3 hours only.

History Jersey’s rich history provided local author Paul Darroch with a diverse tapestry of stories to share with the world The Angel of Zhaotong
Paul fell in love with history as a boy and went on to read Modern History at St Hugh’s College, Oxford. After marrying a Jerseywoman and moving to the island, he unearthed a treasure trove of stories. In his books, Paul brings the past to life by recreating the voices of those who witnessed it. His second book, Jersey: Secrets of the Sea, is the story of an island forged by the seas, set at a crossroads of maritime history and told by the Jersey seafarers whose lives were at the centre of it. Here we meet Lilian Grandin, Jersey’s first female doctor, who set sail for China, in an abridged version of her story.

Family affair Discover Catherine Best’s award-winning jewellery The story of Catherine Best’s rise to critical acclaim began three decades ago when she embarked on a night course to study the art of jewellery making. Her love of the craft and passion for design was the beginning of a successful family business, popular with locals and visitors alike. Today, Catherine Best remains a family business with mother and daughters working alongside each other to create beautiful jewellery influenced by the natural elements of the island. Vikki, who is a designer and head of operations, creates some of the beautiful pieces on sale in the iconic windmill, while Penelope heads up PR and marketing from the new Mayfair boutique. Visiting Catherine Best’s Jersey showroom is no ordinary shopping experience. Within the lovingly restored granite walls at St Peter’s Windmill, dating back to 1837, is where visitors will find Catherine Best’s collections, the jewellery manufacturing workshop and the Windmill Inn café.
Creating masterpieces Visitors can experience the art of making jewellery first-hand, safely behind the viewing glass, from where they can watch the talented team use the tools and technology required to create Catherine’s innovative collections of jewellery. Jersey’s local granite has the most unique and beautiful colour collectio collection ranging from pink-brown to deep red-brown to black. “I have also designed a range of fo tourists who want to take home a piece of Jersey, including the Jersey Ice Cream Cone ‘fun jewellery’ for range which is inspired by my favourite Jersey Dairy Ice Cream!”
The Born to Impress baroque pearl collections are influenced by both Chenny’s oriental heritage and European culture. The Ocean Coral bangle and ring set, set with colourful gemstones around a lustrous large Southsea baroque pearl. Most pieces are one-off as each pearl is individually sourced around the world.
With its bright coloured gemstones, mixing 18ct yellow gold with black rhodium and sterling silver, it gives the bold and stunning effect to this collection. Also part of the collection is the handcrafted Woodland Hunter Spider Ring – a unique statement piece of artwork with its intricate tree trunk detail.
“What interests me in this collection is the challe challenge to create something as little as a piece of jew jewellery and endow it with lots of meaning and detail,” reveals Chenny. “We only pick the mos most beautiful pearls to work with. walking and wildlife
Walk the wild on
side
With miles of coastline and acres of countryside, Jersey is an island packed with places to explore and wildlife to discover
Although covering only 45 square miles, this tiny island has a varied terrain that’s rich with wildlife and easy to explore on foot. Visitors who follow the coastline paths blanketed in gorse and wildflowers, the reservoir walks, or any of Jersey’s other many walking routes, will be able to experience the island’s rare and varied wildlife, flora and fauna.
Exploring on foot National Trust Jersey maintains an extensive network of footpaths through a range of natural habitats, such as coastline, valleys, woodland and heathland, for the public to enjoy. The trust also organises an annual programme of regular guided walks, led by experienced and knowledgeable guides, which can be booked via the website.
Beautiful Jersey Walks La Valette Scenic Walk
Le Col de la Rocque Coastal Walk
This exhilarating circular walk, which takes around 50 minutes to complete, overlooks Bonne Nuit Bay, allowing walkers to take in the stunning coastal vistas and discover a variety of wildlife. Although this is a short walk, there are some very steep sections and the terrain can be rough, so suitable footwear is advisable. The walk begins at Bonne Nuit Bay, halfway up Les Nouvelles Charrières, opposite the bus layby.
A fantastic circular walk featuring fabulous flora, picturesque coastal views and beautiful islets. This walk, which starts at Grève de Lecq Barracks, takes around three hours, although there are also shorter loops starting from Devil’s Hole or La Mare Wine Estate. This walk has been given a medium difficulty rating by National Trust Jersey as it is steep in places, so care should be taken. Parking is available at Grève de Lecq Barracks.
St Lawrence Heritage Walk This gentle three-mile walk takes visitors around the very heart of the island and through one of Jersey’s most beautiful valleys, whilst providing a profound insight into the island’s fascinating historical heritage. The walk begins at St Lawrence Parish Hall, La Grande Route de St Laurent and there is limited parking available near the starting point. Bus routes 7 and 7a.

walking and wildlife Bird watching Jersey is a hub of birding activity, with a wide range of birds to spot all over the island. The Wetland Centre is at the centre of all the birding action, perfectly situated overlooking La Mare au Seigneur (St Ouen’s Pond) SSI nature reserve, and acts as both a state-of-the-art bird hide and a wetland interpretation centre. The Wetland Centre’s 16 viewing windows are arranged at different heights, enabling visitors of all ages to view the reserve and its wildlife, without disturbing the resident waders and waterfowl. Jersey has seen the loss and decline of many birds such as the skylark, yellowhammer and stonechat over the years, but projects like Birds on the Edge – a partnership of Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, States of Jersey Department of the Environment, and National Trust Jersey – aim to restore Jersey’s coastal lands, to help the recovery of declining bird and other animal and plant species, and to encourage the return of those that have died out. “The red-billed chough became extinct in Jersey around 1900,” explains Neil Singleton, who runs Birding Tours Jersey (birdingjersey.co.uk). “This exciting programme of habitat restoration on the island’s coastline will once again provide these wonderful birds with a suitable home.” Jersey is also home to Atlantic puffins, albeit in small numbers, which breed on the north coast of the island between Plémont and Grève de Lecq. Before the
Great War there were an estimated 300 pairs, but this number reduced rapidly leaving only 20 pairs by 1920. Since then, a slow but inexorable reduction has brought the island’s puffin population close to extinction. There is a small chance of seeing them bobbing on the sea during breeding season, but you’ll need some binoculars handy. They also have breeding colonies in the other Channel Islands, including the small island of Burhou just off the coast of Alderney. “We offer free puffin watches at Plémont and Grève de Lecq,” says Neil. “We find a safe place on the cliff top where adults and children can view the birds through our telescopes and binoculars. They can even bring a picnic.”

Red Squirrels Red squirrels are a rare sighting for most visitors from the UK, but on Jersey they are abundant. In fact, they are the only type of squirrel on the island, having been introduced by local naturalists in 1885, and have colonised the woodland ever since. Unlike Great Britain, where aggressive grey squirrels from North America were introduced and competed fiercely with the native species, red squirrels thrive on Jersey. “Woodland areas like St Catherine’s Woods and St Peter’s Valley are great places to see red squirrels,” says Alli Singleton, islander and nature enthusiast. “However, you will often see them crossing the country lanes or sitting on the verges.” Jersey has been an island for over 6,000 years, Red-billed chough – Elizabeth Corry which has given it time to develop its own natural environment, with many species of wildlife that are exclusive to the island. From wild flowers and butterflies to lizards and toads, you’ll have hours of fun discovering Jersey’s gems.

beaches
Coast to coast With numerous bays, beaches and coves to discover, here are our firm favourites…
Anne Port
Grouville
Green Island
This small secluded bay, found at the north-east of the island, has a combination of pebbles and fine sand. Limited parking means the bay is often quiet, but parking can be found just a short walk from the beach.
Archirondel
Known to locals as ‘Long Beach’, this stretch of sand is calm and sheltered, making it ideal for swimming. There are plenty of water sports on offer during the summer including water skiing and wakeboarding.
Green Island
Havre des Pas
Named after the grass-covered rock just off the coastline and accessible at low tide, this beach is situated at the southerly tip of the island. Here beachgoers can enjoy silky sand, rock pools, gullies and clear waters.
Archirondel
Grève de Lecq
Found on the east coast, the unspoilt beach and spectacular views of St Catherine’s make it a popular destination for locals and holidaymakers alike. Access isn’t easy and the pebbles may prove problematic for wheelchair users.
Stretching between the parishes of St Mary and St Ouen, this is the most accessible and frequented beach on the north coast. Visitors can enjoy sandy shores with safe swimming during the summer months.
Beauport
Grouville
Beauport Surrounded by cliffs, this sheltered sand-andpebble bay is accessed via a steep wooded incline, which means it’s rarely overcrowded. Its pristine water makes it perfect for snorkelling.

Havre des Pas Just a short walk from the capital, St Helier, this sheltered spot features a late 19th century tidal pool. The soft sand and seawater lido are ideal for family fun and safe bathing.
beaches Ouaisne
Plémont
Ouaisne Situated next to St Brelade’s Bay, which can be reached on foot at low tide, this secluded sandy beach is less crowded than its neighbour, making it popular with families.
BEACH SAFETY
Plémont Shouldered by high cliffs on the dramatic north coast, this picturesque beach is accessed by a long staircase. Great for swimming on calm days and surfing when the wind picks up, searching in rock pools at low tide or visiting the caves by kayak.
Always read and obey the safety signs, usually found at the beach entrance. Where possible, swim between the red and yellow flags at beaches patrolled by lifeguards.
St Brelade’s This large sheltered bay is one of the busiest beaches on the island. It offers plenty of activities, including banana boat rides, canoe, paddle board and kayak hire, trampolining and volleyball.
St Ouen’s Rozel Bay This beautiful fishing port on the north-east coast, although charming, isn’t the traditional pleasure beach. However, low tide reveals a small sandy beach perfect for sunbathing, and safe swimming at high tide
Situated on the west coast, this long sandy bay’s exposure to the Atlantic makes for perfect surfing, but with strong currents even the most accomplished swimmers should take care.
Portelet
Portelet
St Aubin’s
Located on the south coast, this golden sandy beach and clear waters attract swimmers and snorkellers. The beach is accessed via a long stairway which may prove unsuitable for visitors with mobility issues.
Popular for water sports, this beach stretches from St Helier to the harbour at St Aubin. The sandy shores are popular with volleyball players and you can walk to Elizabeth Castle when the tide permits. BeachAbility offers free, specially designed wheelchairs which manoeuvre easily over sand, pebbles and slipways. The service, including friendly helpers who will give you a demonstration and answer any questions, is available at six locations: • Gorey at Longbeach • West Park, on the upper wall adjacent to La Fregate Café • St Aubin Gunsite slip and Bel Royal slip • St Brelade Oyster Box disabled slip • St Ouen, Le Braye slip • St Clement, La Mare slip Contact BeachAbility on 07797 935088 or www.beachability.org

inside story
Love island Jersey had such an impact on Jennifer Velazco that she upped roots and made it her home

ALAN J CRAVO PHOTOGRAPHY
“I fell in love with the laidback lifestyle”
Love first blossomed for Jennifer some 20 years ago when she first visited Jersey for a holiday, falling for the slow-paced way of life, stunning scenery and friendly residents. When she returned to Ireland, she packed her bags to start a new life in the Channel Islands. “It was only supposed to be a holiday, but I fell in love with the laid-back lifestyle and couldn’t wait to return,” recalls Jennifer. “Within two weeks I was back for good and the rest is history.” Upon her return, Jennifer worked as a care worker before following her passion for jewellery, landing a job with a local jewellers as a buyer. By 2015 her love of design culminated in the fulfilment of her dream to open her own store, called Aqua, in the centre of St Helier. “I have always been creative and Jersey’s beautiful coastlines have provided me with great inspiration,” says Jennifer. “Now nearly everything in the shop is designed by me and features unique materials that are a big part of the island’s heritage, such as Jersey ormer shell and pink Jersey granite.” Having lived on Jersey for over two decades Jennifer has got to know the island inside out and is still as enamoured with it as she was when she first arrived, noting its tranquillity as a real attraction for tourists. “It’s the ideal place to chill out and relax because everyone is so friendly and the choice of beaches, shops and restaurants is amazing,” enthuses Jennifer. “I love Plémont and Portelet bays because they are stunning and secluded. If you go mid-week or early in the morning you can have them all to yourself, but be warned, the walk down is a bit of a hike.” Jennifer makes the most of the island’s vast array of eateries when meeting up with friends and classes Oyster Box in St Brelade’s Bay, Banjo in St Helier and Crab Shack in Gorey amongst her favourites. “The beauty of living on an island is that you are surrounded by ocean, which means there are so many great fish dishes,” says Jennifer. “The Oyster Box has fish, meat and vegetarian options on the menu. The cocktail bar outside is wonderful because no matter where you sit you’ll have a panoramic view of the sea.” Island living clearly suits Jennifer who is as much in awe of Jersey as she ever was, enthusing about the lifestyle, people and scenery. She shares that she enjoys driving through the green grassy lanes and walking the various costal paths around the island. “The north-west of the island is great for path walks, as is the south-west where you will find Corbière lighthouse,” says Jennifer. “There are lots of great places to hike, caves to explore and waterfalls to discover. The great thing is that it’s a small island, so visitors can pack in a lot during their stay, but I’ve yet to meet anyone that didn’t want to come back!”

After sun
Jersey’s night scene has a lot to offer everyone, from real ale country pubs and speakeasy-style cocktails to comical cabaret and classical opera
Project 52
Whether you fancy a quiet walk along the beach and a glass of wine while watching the sun go down, or you’re up for an exciting evening of entertainment, Jersey has it all. If you’re determined to make the most of every last ray of sunshine then head to one of the island’s roof terrace bars. Bohemia Bar and Roof Terrace at The Club Hotel and Bar on Green Street is a haven for cocktails, champagne and wine, with casual seating, making it the perfect place to relax. The Merchant House Brasserie’s terrace and garden bar are ideal for enjoying a drink and listening to music on a warm summer’s
eve. If it’s breathtaking views and live music you’re after then pop into the Radisson Blu Terrace which overlooks Elizabeth Marina. Here you can watch the sun silhouetting Elizabeth Castle as it goes down. For something a bit different head over to Project 52, if you can find it, discreetly tucked away on Waterloo Lane in the heart of St Helier’s historic underbelly. This Orwell-inspired, member-funded, exclusively inclusive establishment offers well-mixed artisan spirits, fine wines and sharing boards in a unique setting. Vittoria is Jersey’s latest bar and nightclub, offering a mixture of music and dancing. Located at Liberation Square, this luxurious bar has quickly established itself as a hangout for the island’s most discerning crowd, for early and late evening entertainment. Dance the night away at the Havana Club, Halkett Street, St Helier. This over-21s club has three different rooms, playing music that ranges from 60s Motown and 80s R&B to modern tunes. For those who are in the mood to be entertained, the Jersey Opera House in St Helier is the place to go. This beautiful Edwardian horseshoe-style auditorium has been carefully restored to recreate the ambience and appeal of the original 1900s theatre and offers a range of events and shows all year through. The Jersey Arts Centre in Phillips Street, St Helier, encourages participation in the

performing arts and frequently has excellent performances, from comedy to dance and drama. There is also a Bar Gallery on the ground floor, which is a small exhibition area, and the Berni Gallery which doubles as a foyer to the theatre. The Merton Hotel, St Saviour, offers a wide range of entertainment, with fantastic tribute nights, the glitz and glamour of variety acts, hilarious stand-up comedy, magic acts and performers. Originally a Napoleonic fortress, Fort Regent in St Helier is the island’s largest leisure and entertainment venue, offering panoramic views of the south and east coasts. It hosts a number of concerts and events throughout the year. Enjoy dinner and drinks at Wildfire Bars, Grills and Tapas in Mulcaster Street, where they serve some of the best steak on the island. Pop downstairs for a pre-dinner drink in Moo Moo’s Cocktail Bar or pre-show tapas at Fuegos.

other islands
Island hopping Take a trip to Jersey’s neighbouring islands and explore their individual beauty Jersey is just one of eight inhabited Channel Islands, with Guernsey, Sark and Alderney all within easy reach by scheduled boat service or private RIB charter. If you have the opportunity to take a trip across the water to one of the other islands during your stay, do - you won’t be disappointed. First up is Guernsey, the second-largest island after Jersey, which is renowned for its golden stretches of sand at Cobo bay, rugged coastline, rich history and a great range of places to eat. Top attractions include Castle Cornet, a 13th century harbour fortification in the capital St Peter Port, which houses history and military museums, and Candie Gardens, a stunning 19th century garden in the heart of St Peter that has spectacular views across the harbour to neighbouring islands. Herm is just a short hop from Guernsey and is lovingly referred to by locals as the paradise island. With no cars, crowds or stress, this little island, measuring just three miles wide, is the perfect place to unwind. Visitors can enjoy its unspoilt beaches, explore the coastline and see breeding colonies of puffins, take in the view of the French coast, or visit Shell Beach. Take a trip to Sark, nestled between Guernsey and Jersey, and step back in time. Like Herm, there are no cars on this island, but you can take a leisurely carriage ride around the island or hire a bicycle and explore it for yourself. Surrounded by dramatic cliffs, the coastline of Sark is a rugged mixture of
tiny bays and rock stacks, littered with offshore reefs and half-submerged pinnacles teeming with marine life. Visitors to Sark can catch a scheduled boat ride from Guernsey or charter a private RIB boat through Jersey Seafaris or Island Rib Voyages which both offer a reliable service, comfortable boats and crew with plenty of experience of Channel Island waters. There are several hotels on Sark, along with a reasonable selection of self-catering properties and a campsite. We would recommend

Sark’s stunning coastine
La Sablonnerie Hotel on Little Sark for visitors looking for tranquillity and scenic views. It also has its own mooring, ideal for those arriving by RIB direct from Jersey. Alderney is known for its rich wildlife and miles of scenic walking trails and is home to the only working railway in the Channel Islands. Visitors to this small island will discover an ancient and varied history and an easy-going pace of life. Les Ecréhous is a group of islands and rocks located just six miles north-east of Jersey and eight miles from France and is only accessible by Private RIB charter. “Les Ecréhous is one of our most popular trips,” says Stef Stevens at Jersey Seafaris. “On a typical trip passengers will cruise around the reefs spotting birdlife, Atlantic grey seals and, if they’re lucky, bottlenose dolphins too.” Les Minquiers, which, like Les Ecréhous, form a protected wetland site under the Ramsar Convention, are a group of rocks and islands situated nine miles south of Jersey and only accessible by private charter boat. Maîtresse Île is the largest island within Les Minquiers and is home to a small number of cottages, which are the most southerly buildings in the British Isles, and a wide variety of birds. The outer sandbank is perfect for paddleboarding, swimming and picnics. Jersey has a lot to offer, but if you have the time do take the opportunity to visit the other Channel Islands – they’re well worth a look.
