The Manager TIM

FLOWERS

From the Manager GOOD AFTERNOON ALL AND I WANT TO FIRSTLY WISH EACH AND EVERYONE ONE OF YOU A HAPPY NEW YEAR. 2020 WAS PRETTY RUBBISH YEAR FOR THE WHOLE COUNTRY, SO LET’S HOPE FOR A POSITIVE YEAR AHEAD. I am of course gutted that I won’t be able to introduce myself to you in person, but I hope you’re all safe and well whilst watching from home on BT Sport. I know once the time is right, you’ll give me a warm welcome and get right behind our team going forward. It was disappointing to not play over the festive period, it would’ve been a nice chance to get some more minutes under our belts as we try to push forward. However, I feel it was the right decision from the National League and we have to do everything we can to keep everybody safe. I’m glad that we have been able to get back out on the grass this week and we have all worked very hard out on the training pitch for this weekend’s match. We have to show determination and commitment as a minimum, but then show the quality we have. As I said in my press conference, we have some really talented individuals here, who now need to start showing what they are about. The quality I have inherited on top of the ones I have been able to add so far mean we are heading in the right direction. I am also delighted to have the backroom set up in place too, I have to give thanks to the Chairman for his support since I came in, he has been nothing short of excellent in helping me with my vision for the Club.

Today’s visitors are one of the best in the division in my book, Luke is a top manager and has a well assembled squad. They have been together for a number of years and they are a top side, so there’s no doubt it’ll be a tough game this evening. We have to match them in terms of effort levels, I do not want us ever being beaten in desire, determination or commitment against any side. It’s a local derby, so there’ll be that extra edge on the game and we need to get points on the board, so it’s a massive match for us tonight. I have ensured that myself and my staff have done everything possible to set our boys up to be ready to go and give them a game. It’s time to turn talk into action, so let’s hope we produce a strong performance. That’s enough from me for now, let’s hope for a successful year for the Club on and off the pitch. Let’s kick off 2021 in the right way with three big points on home soil. Thanks for your support,

Tim

The Captain JAMES

DUNNE

From the Captain

FIRSTLY, ON BEHALF OF MYSELF AND THE BOYS, I WANT TO WISH ALL OF OUR FANS A HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope you all enjoyed the festive period as much as you could, it was certainly different but it makes you realise what we all have to be thankful for. Obviously, we couldn’t play our matches, so I’m glad we can get back out there this evening and start trying to kick on now. We are delighted to have Tim with us, he has been top class since coming in and the boys know exactly what he and his staff expect of us. We have been working exceptionally hard in training this week and I am sure we are ready to go and get a win this evening. We have to keep working hard and then I know we have the quality to start turning this season around. There is a long way to go, but we can’t keep telling ourselves that, it’s time for us to grab games by the scruff of the neck and get some points on the board. It’ll be a really tough game this evening, Boreham Wood are a good side and the matches between us last year were both very tight. There’s always a bit of spice in these games and now we have to go out there with the right attitude, so that we can give our fans something to shout about. They’ll be well organised, they play neat football and they can be very effective, so we have to be ready for that. They have some good players in their team, so we need to match their desire and then show our quality. Thanks for all your continued support and Happy New Year! See you soon,

Dunney

HALIFAX AWAY POSTCARD: Halifax is an away day I have been to a fair number of times due to the fact it’s about a 30 minute drive from my house in Leeds. Whilst many Tuesday night games here have been a nightmare for most fans, they have always been a blessing for me especially compared to midweek home games which are a 200 mile drive! Since it’s so local local it’s always been a good opportunity for me to drag some of my friends to the games too! The Shay Stadium is a pretty decent one and automatically gets approval from me as (like every proper northern away day) they sell chips and gravy! Due to the majority of our games at Halifax being Tuesday nights, I think there’s only been one occasion on which I haven’t been ridiculously cold! What’s more, whilst Halifax is a fun local away day, unfortunately I don’t really have any winning memories from these games. However, my memories aren’t all doom and gloom. Despite us losing 4-2 last season, I liked our goals from Simeon Akinola and Charlee Adams. Simeon’s lovely curling shot from just inside the box was one of my favourites of the season! Something that’s always stood out for me at our games at the Shay is despite the often small away following, we have usually stayed in good voice and had some fun in the away end. I remember one particular Tuesday night in 2015 when we decided to start up with chants from ‘older days’ which was a nice trip down memory lane and definitely helped distract me from the 90th minute Halifax equaliser and Stephens red card! Besides just Barnet memories, due to living close I remember attending an England C match back in 2014 when Paul Fairclough was in charge and Andy Yiadom scored too! I also found myself there in 2017 watching Halifax’s promotion game back to the National League as I needed my football fix once the season was over! So despite it somewhat being our bogey place, I do have fun memories from my trips to the Shay. I am excited to finally be back at The Hive today to watch some live football and hopefully we can put things right from Tuesday. Although I was gutted I couldn’t make my usual midweek trip to Halifax, something I did not miss was the confusing look on their stewards’ faces when someone with my accent was going into the away end!

From the Press desk GOOD AFTERNOON BEES FANS I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and enjoyed the festivities as best you could.

Despite the extremely difficult circumstances we currently find ourselves in. Hopefully, the boys can give you a late Christmas present with three points against Maidenhead this afternoon. It was great to see fans back in the stadium earlier this month, it made a huge chance to the normal matchday atmosphere and I know the boys enjoyed having you back with us. Unfortunately, that isn’t currently possible with the restrictions but I am glad we now have an up to scratch streaming provider, so you won’t miss a kick of the action this afternoon. Although, you will have to put up with my dulcet tones on the commentary! Obviously, there’s been a change in the dugout since our last home match and it has been great to work with Tim since his arrival at the Club. It is never nice to see people go and I wish both Peter and Steve the best for the future. Tim is at the helm now and hopefully he will be able to kick start our season, there is still a long way to go! There’s lots of points to play for and I am extremely positive that he will implement some solid foundations during the remainder of the campaign. As for me, I hope you are enjoying the pre-match show’s and some of the other content that is currently being produced. I am doing my utmost to keep you connected with the Club during these challenging times, so I hope there can be plenty for us to shout about in 2021. This year has been such a challenging year for us all and I would like to thank all the Barnet fans for the support they have shown me this year from an off the field perspective, not forgetting the unwavering support you show for the boys every week. Hopefully 2021 will be a brighter year for us all and here’s to success both on and off the pitch. Happy New Year.

Walking football

BARNET OVER 50’S Our final 2020 walking football session at the Hive London Was dedicated to ‘Crisis for Christmas’ and the lads raised enough money for 4 homeless people to have sheltered accommodation over the holidays which is a fabulous achievement. We were then contacted by the Hive Foundation, the charitable arm of Barnet Football Club in relation to the upcoming ‘Warmer Winter’ project which is in partnership with OneStonegrove and Mesut Özil. Our players will be providing vehicles to help deliver 10,000 healthy meals and 10,000 gift packages to children in need. It’s been a very difficult year with COVID-19 and we are grateful to be able to play the game we love and are humbled to be able to give back to our local community also. We hope that as we approach 2021, we all have a safer and healthier year ahead. We would like to thank Matt Dixon for running our sessions and Barnet FC Chairman Mr Kleanthous for his continued support of our team and it’s ventures. Happy New Year from everyone at the Barnet Walking Football Team!

Following the Football Association restructuring of nonleague football in 2004, Boreham Wood competed for the first time in the Southern Football League, playing in Division One East for two seasons. Winning the championship in 2005/06 the club was promoted again and returned to the Isthmian League Premier Division for the 2006/07 season. Alongside the championship success in the 2005/06 season the club went on an incredible run in the FA Trophy, reaching the Semi-Finals. We are very proud to say that, at present, we are still the lowest ranked team to have reached the last four of that prestigious tournament. The 2009/10 season was also a highly memorable one for the club, as it saw us finish 4th in our Isthmian League Premier Division campaign and take part in a League PlayOff for the very first time. After defeating Aveley 1-0 away in the Semi-Final, the club went on to beat Kingstonian 2-0 at home in the Final and, under the shrewd management of Ian Allinson, we deservedly took our place in the Football Conference South.

TODAY’S OPPOSITION Boreham Wood Football Club celebrated its 70th Anniversary at the end of the 2017/18 season Having been formed in 1948 following the amalgamation of Boreham Rovers and Royal Retournez. The anniversary was celebrated in spectacular style with an appearance at Wembley and also beating a Football League club for the first time ever in the FA Cup – more later on both! First though, back to our formative years and the club gradually progressed through the Mid-Herts, Parthenon, Spartan and Athenian Leagues. Under the Chairmanship of local man Bill O’Neill and the management of fellow local man Mickey Hunter, the club moved forward by winning back to back promotions at Athenian League level, before being elected to the Isthmian Football League in 1974/75, under the management of another local man Micky Lennon. In 1976/77 the club won the Isthmian League Division Two Championship by sixteen points and then had a five-season spell in the Premier Division during the late seventies and early eighties. It then enjoyed another much more successful spell in the Premier Division during the nineties under the Chairmanship of Phil Wallace and the managerial expertise of Bob Makin. That sadly ended in relegation at the end of the 1999/2000 season under the then new Chairman Danny Hunter who remains our Chairman to this day. However, the club did bounce back immediately from that disappointment and once again gained promotion to the Isthmian League Premier Division, as Isthmian League Division One Champions in 2000/01.

A poor start to our inaugural 2010/11 Conference South league campaign saw us initially struggle to compete at that level and we sat bottom of the table around the Christmas period. However, with clear leadership and further investment from our experienced Chairman, our manager Ian Allinson, our dressing room and our supporters all came together. We rallied and recovered well to finish in a very respectable 14th place. The 2011/12 season saw us build on our efforts from the first campaign and we achieved an excellent 8th place. The following season, 2012/13, saw the club start very well, only to finish poorly and from occupying a solid Play-Off place in early March finished in a disappointing 9th place. However, the undoubted story of that season, was our glorious FA Cup run and First Round proper appearance that ended in a 2-0 defeat against a very good Brentford side at Meadow Park. The 2013/14 season ended in cup success, with a Herts Senior Cup triumph defeating local rivals Bishops Stortford on penalties in the final. Another poor start in our league campaign, however, meant the club had a long relegation battle on its hands for the majority of the season but a strong finish saw us end up in 13th place. Another cup run saw us again reach the First Round proper of the FA Cup, and that culminated in us holding Football League One side Carlisle United to a 0-0 draw at Meadow Park. The replay ended in heartbreak, though, as we led 1-0, only to miss a penalty before two late goals saw us bow out of the competition 2-1. In 2013, we got the go ahead to build a brand new 870-seater West Stand. The project was finally completed in May 2014 at a cost of around three quarters of a million pounds. The stand was officially opened by Mr Arsene Wenger in front of a bumper crowd of 3,400, in a specially arranged friendly against an Arsenal First Team on Saturday 19th July 2014. The 2014/15 season was, at the time, the most successful in Boreham Wood Football Club’s history. After leading the Conference South for the majority of the season, a controversial defeat at eventual League Champions Bromley cost us the title and so we took our place in the end of season Play-Offs.

After playing magnificently to beat Havant & Waterlooville 2-0 away from home, and then drawing 2-2 at home in a two-legged Semi-Final, we faced the then big spending and strongly fancied Whitehawk Football Club at Meadow Park in front of a partisan 2,200 crowd. A Lee Angol set piece put us ahead early in the second half before a late Whitehawk penalty levelled proceedings. However, a Junior Morias goal in the first minute of extra time proved to be the winner and sent the club into raptures and the town into delirium. Who could believe it, little Boreham Wood with the lowest average attendance in the league had deservedly achieved promotion to the top tier of Non-League football for the very first time in our then 67-year history! The 2015/16 season was undoubtedly a historic season for the Wood with us competing at the top table of non-league football for the very first time in the newly named National League. It was, though, no fairy-tale opening season at that level against much stronger opposition. In fact, it proved a very difficult one just to survive and, apart from our opening day 3-1 win against Halifax, and the odd big win against the likes of Tranmere Rovers, we struggled to compete with the bigger clubs. By the October we had lost our very successful longstanding manager Ian Allinson to his increased work commitments. We had replaced him with Allinson’s experienced, but young, assistant manager Luke Garrard who was just 30-years of age and we continued to struggle and adjust to football at that level and faced a relegation battle that took us to the very last game of the season. The final three league games of the campaign will long live in the memory as it saw us beat Aldershot away 2-1, Guiseley at home 1-0 and then Welling United 3-0 away. That end of season turnaround finally secured our place in the National League Premier and sent our Chairman, Manager, staff, dressing room and supporters into raptures. The following season, 2016/17, saw the club improve further, with an 11th place National League finish but the best was still to come one year later. During that 2017/18 season the club finally realised two ambitions, the first of which was to beat a Football League club in the FA Cup. That happened on Saturday, November 4 2017 with a 2-1 victory over famous FA Cup winners Blackpool. Going a goal down with under half an hour left did not suggest that history was about to be made but an equaliser from Blair Turgott paved the way for Dan Holman to secure his place in the club’s history books with a very late winner. That would have been the highlight of a normal season, but 2017/18 was anything but that for Boreham Wood FC as a great run of league form ended with an amazing 4th place finish in the National League. That meant yet another appearance in the Play-Offs and this time in the new format where six clubs were involved. In the eliminator round we beat AFC Fylde 2-1 in a hardfought game but suffered a series of nightmare injuries, losing three key players before and during the game and putting them out of the remaining Play-Off matches.

We then faced Sutton United away just three days later, without those three key players but a stunning performance led to a 3-2 win against the odds. When the nerve wracking period of injury time ended, those present celebrated the impossible dream – Boreham Wood were going to play at Wembley Stadium! The second lifetime ambition of many at the club was to be realised in the same dramatic season as the first. A place in the Football League was at stake but it was not to be, losing 2-1 to Tranmere Rovers but the memory of the day, the walk down Wembley Way and seeing over 4,000 fans supporting the club will last forever in the memory of everyone connected with the club. Our Chairman Danny Hunter can proudly claim that he has overseen our rise through both the Ryman Leagues, the Conference South and into the National League where, in our fourth season, we are regarded as an established club at that level, the pinnacle of non-league football. During our Chairman’s tenure, he has continued to invest or raise over £14 million, to greatly modernise our current infrastructure, our player recruitment, our ground and facility, which has improved the football club hugely and enhanced every fan’s matchday experience when they visit our Meadow Park home. In 2017 he secured further investment of £1.8 million building a new training facility, laying a new DESSO pitch of Premier League quality, installing new floodlights and dugouts. Our facilities are now 90% utilised on a daily basis, 52 weeks of the year. The club houses the largest sports education programme in the whole country, which has now been established for well over a decade. It is a programme that boasts over 600 scholar/students for the next academic year and 2018/19 season. Optimism in our future has long returned to Meadow Park and we hope it will now lead to greater home support, greater sponsorship and, of course, further investment as we continue to progress. After the incredible infrastructure overhaul and huge facility investment in recent years, the club has never looked in better shape. We now have the excitement of another National League season to enjoy and the future of Boreham Wood Football Club has never looked brighter throughout our 70-year history.

LUKE

GARRARD

The Manager

LUKE STARTED HIS CAREER AS A YTS AT SWINDON TOWN making his full professional debut at 18-years-old against Oldham Athletic on 26th April 2003. He went on to make 17 appearances for the Robins before brief spells at Bishop’s Stortford, Boreham Wood and Northwood. Luke later joined AFC Wimbledon in March 2006. A cult hero with Wimbledon’s fans, he made over 100 appearances for the club, mainly as a right-back but also occasionally in the centre of midfield. In November 2008, Garrard tore his cruciate ligament during training which kept him out for the rest of that season. From the start of the 2009-10 season, he made only occasional appearances for the Wombles, which saw him re-join the Wood in January 2010. Luke couples his role as First Team Manager at Meadow Park with his role as the Academy Manager. The 31-year-old was originally an Academy Coach at the Club in 2008, before being promoted to Academy Director in 2012. Luke was the appointed Ian Allinson’s Assistant in 2013, a position he held for two-and-a-half-years. Upon Ian’s Departure in October 2015, Luke

was appointed as First Team Manager, becoming the youngest boss in all of England’s top five division’s. His first game in charge a 1-1 draw away with Guiseley. Luke would steer the Wood away from the relegation zone in the club’s inaugural season in the National League. The side clinched survival on the last game of the season away to already relegated Welling United with a comprehensive 3-0 victory. Luke’s stock has further risen in the following seasons, having taken the Wood to Wembley for the first time in their history back in 2017/18. The side achieved their highest ever National League finish, and reached the play-off Final against Tranmere Rovers, narrowly losing 2-1. Garrard maintained the Wood’s National League status in the 2018/19 season, finishing 8 points above the relegation zone in 20th.

Nathan Ashmore NATHAN’S SENIOR CAREER STARTED OUT AT HAVANT AND WATERLOOVILL He made his first team debut in 2008 following a youth career with Portsmouth. In 2011, Nathan had a loan spell at Gosport Borough, and after some impressive performances the move was made permanent. In his 5 years at Gosport, Nathan helped them gain successive promotions to the National League South, as well as a trip to Wembley in the FA Trophy Final. Ashmore was then snapped up by Ebbsfleet helping them gain promotion to the National League. Since then Nathan has amassed over 170 appearances for the Fleet and has won the Supporters Player of the Season award for the past two years. In October 2019, a deal was completed between the Wood and Ebbsfleet that saw Nathan come to Meadow Park for the remainder of the 2019/20 season on a season long loan. These stats led to trials with Premier League side Crystal Palace and League One outfits Shrewsbury Town & Coventry City. Smith won both Players’ Player & Supporters’ Player of the Year for Hitchin in 2016. At the end of his first season with the Wood, Smith suffered a serious knee injury which kept him out for the entirety of the 2018/19 season. Since getting back to full fitness, Kane signed a new two-year-deal to stay at Wood until at least 2021.

Mafuta then signed for Gateshead FC ahead of the 2015/16 season where he made a great impact in over 60 appearances for the Club. His strength and powerful performances earned Gus a move to the Class of 92’s Salford City in 2017, where he started in the Promotion Final victory at Wembley over AFC Fylde in 2017/18. Following a two-year stint at ‘the Ammies’ Mafuta was then snapped up by fellow league competitors Hartlepool United ahead of the 2019/20 season where he made over 30 appearances in a curtailed season, notching three goals during his time at the Club. Mafuta has since left the Pools to sign a year-long contract with Boreham Wood FC ahead of the 2020/21 season.

The National League North leaders sign Groves from Maccabi Haifa in Israel, where he had been assistant manager. He has also previously managed Grimsby Town and AFC Bournemouth, as well as being caretaker manager at Portsmouth. Groves won his first match in charge of the club – a 4-2 home win at home to Needham Market in the FA Trophy third round. Groves joins the side as they sit top of the 6th tier on 27 points, with eight wins from their 13 fixtures so far. They sit six places above second placed Kidderminster Harriers, who have played two games less. Former Barnet fans’ favourite goalkeeper is also currently on the books of the Tigers, but is set for a short time on the sidelines.

Slough Town joint manager Neil Baker has confirmed that he is going to be taking a step back from his duties with the Rebels for at least six weeks, and that co manager Jon Underwood will take full charge of the National League South side in the mean time. Last month saw Baker manage his 500th game in charge of the Berkshire club, making him the longest serving managers in the league. This new comes after it was revealed that his father is to undergo chemotherapy, with Baker opting to take time out to spend with him during the treatment.

Former Leyton Orient, Walsall and MK Dons forward Jabo Ibehre, who retired earlier this month, has revealed that he almost lost a leg as a result of a freak injury. The 37 year old, who has played for nine different clubs since 2009, said that he collided with an opposition player in a development squad match in October 2019. He continued to say that he was in the hospital two days after the match, only to have a couple of the opponents teeth lodged in his knee. He described the feelings and look of the wounds, stating that the doctors told him about the serious infection that he sustained, resulting in surgery which meant that he eventually just couldn’t continue playing. The 6ft 4in forward scored 138 goals in 677 games across clubs in the lower divisions of the EFL, and later said that if he hadn’t sought the medical help when he had, the infections may have led to needing to lose the entire leg.

Match Report 3 DORKING

WANDERERS FC

IT WAS A QUIET OPENING TO PROCEEDINGS AT A RAINY MEADOWBANK STADIUM HOW IT HAPPENED The Bees first chance fell to JJ Hooper, but his effort was comfortably dealt with by Sam Howes. Up the other end, Harry Taylor had to be alert to get a crucial touch on a dangerous cross with Jason Prior lurking behind him six yards from goal. It would be the National League South side who would take the lead after a cross was headed against the crossbar by Prior, before James McShane scored on the follow-up. It was almost two just minutes later as the ball struck the post after a dangerous ball flashed across our six-yard box.

1 BARNET FC

The first chance of the second half fell to substitute Alex McQueen, he flashed an effort just wide of the post following an extended spell of Bees pressure. Up the other end, Loach was called into action as he tipped a low Matthew Briggs stop behind for a corner. With twenty minutes left on the clock, we were down to ten men as Fox’s debut ended early as he was shown a straight red card for a late tackle. Fox was already on a booking but it didn’t appear that the ref showed a second booking. As the game ticked on, the 10-man Bees continued to force the issue, with second half sub Josh Walker having a golden chance after being found by McQueen, but our number 22 couldn’t make a clean connection to guide it goalwards. As the match went into five added minutes, the hosts sealed the victory as Luke Moore stepped up to convert a penalty, after Loach had brought down a Dorking attacker. It wasn’t the start new boss Tim Flowers wanted and leaves him plenty to ponder ahead of the busy upcoming schedule

Tim Flowers side soon found their feet and almost levelled through Hooper after he headed onto the roof of the net following a good delivery from Jack Connors. Ten minutes before the break, we were level as a neat move found debutant Ben Fox on the edge of the box, he made no mistake as he curled home. The hosts responded almost immediately, as a quick free-kick was played wide before Prior powered a header home from a brilliant cross into the Bees box.
