DEAN BRENNAN

HEAD COACH DEAN BRENNAN Dean, we have a busy bank holiday weekend coming up. What has our approach been like for it? “It was nice to win against Eastleigh last time out because it has boosted the lads confidence. “This weekend is going to be tough as Grimsby Town are flying at the moment. “They are at the top of the form guide and will be looking to secure a spot in the playoff places. “Grimsby have a lot of good players and an experienced manager so it will certainly be a difficult test. “On Monday we will then travel to Altrincham who are another team that are doing really well. “I have said before that there are no easy games in this division so we will wait and see how we come up against them.” We have a few positives to take into this weekend following the Eastleigh victory, but how do we go about bringing them forward? “Winning football matches gives players belief and confidence. “I was pleased with our work rate against

Eastleigh and I thought we earned our luck. “We stuck together and dug deep as a team which is something we need to be doing on a more consistent basis. “Ideally I would like us to keep more clean sheets but we need to be more consistent with our overall performance.” Do you think that the Eastleigh win could be a turning point for us given our results before that? “No disrespect to Eastleigh but Grimsby Town are totally different opposition. “Grimsby are a really good side who are strong in and out of possession. “We are going to have to be very competitive and hopefully we make them have an off day. “It will be a challenge and hopefully the players can step up to it. “We have got a game plan and there will be long periods where we will not have the ball. “We will need to work our socks off for as long as we can to try and force some errors.”

DEAN BRENNAN

Grimsby Town have had an impressive run of results lately, so what challenges are you expecting from them? “Grimsby have a lot of pace in the wide areas and have a few experienced lads in their squad as well. “Grimsby have been very consistent for the majority of the season but they did also go through a tricky spell when they had players out injured. “That just shows you that you need everybody fit in this division because when they had injuries, they struggled to win football matches.” James Callan has returned to training after a lengthy spell on the sideline. Have you got any news on some of the other injured lads? “Our injury list just keeps getting added to which is frustrating. “Reece Grego-Cox will not play after he has been suspended for three games following a red card. “Aston Oxborough did his first training session with us on Friday since suffering from concussion. “Jordan Thomas is out with an ankle injury which means we are depleted in the defensive areas again. “We have not had any other players return and Jake Askew has also picked up an injury. “The harder you work, the luckier you get in life, which is exactly what we will need to do this weekend.” The fans seemed to enjoy themselves at Eastleigh last weekend and I know you would like to get another positive result for them again? “Supporters just want to see honest, hard work, and we did that last weekend. “We got our rewards for that against Eastleigh and we will be looking for more of the same on Saturday. “We must cut out the errors and have a good concentration because we will be playing against better players. “Our fans have stuck with us which is appreciated because it has been a challenging season for everyone.”

TODAY’S LOOK AHEAD

Wes, we have just four games left of the season. Can you talk us through how you feel that it has gone? “It has not been as good as we would have liked but we are looking to finish strongly and put in some good performances for the fans. “There has been some improvement in our league position from last year and there is stability at the club which means we can kick on into next season.”

“We continued to press them to find the winning goal, which we thankfully did. “I hope it will be a turning point for us as we had lost a few games in the build up to it. “Since the win training has been loud and lively which is great to be a part of.” On Saturday we host Grimsby Town who have been on a good run lately. How can we stop their progression?

You have played close to 30 league games this season. How have you found it personally after coming back from your injury?

“Every game is tough in this league but we know that Grimsby Town will definitely be up for it.

“I am really pleased to be back playing again especially after I was out injured for a lot of last season.

“They are a strong side but we have done our analysis on them and we know what to expect.

“Hopefully we can implement our game plan “It took me a while to build up my match sharpness and come out with the three points.” but I have felt like myself again over the last few months.” Since coming back from injury you have played in a variety of positions. What has that been Have you got a personal goal for the remainder of like? the campaign? “It has been good and it is nice to know that I “I just want to play as much as I can so that I can am dependable and versatile. help contribute to some more wins. “I have played all over the pitch including as a “Our goal as a team is to go unbeaten in the number 10, out wide and holding midfielder.” final four games and build on the positives from Eastleigh. 2021/22 The Mariners’ return to the National League saw the club’s best start to a League campaign for almost 40 years, with two draws and five victories in the first seven games of the campaign. Paul Hurst recruited 15 new players over the summer, looking to bounce back to the EFL at the first time of asking.

THE OPPOSITION

MANAGER

PAUL HURST Paul Hurst was reappointed as First Team Manager on December 30th 2020 following the departure of Ian Holloway. The Mariners welcomed back Paul as he returned to the club where he spent fiveand-a-half years, taking charge of over 300 games. Memorably, he guided the Mariners back to the Football League after a 3-1 victory at Wembley Stadium over Forest Green Rovers in 2016, ending a six-year spell in the National League. Paul went on to spend two years at Shrewsbury Town, guiding them from the bottom of Sky Bet League One to the League One Playoff final in 2018, falling just shy of promotion after a 2-1 defeat to Rotherham United at Wembley in extratime following a 3rd place league finish. His stock continued to rise, as he was appointed manager of Sky Bet Championship side, Ipswich Town where he spent a short period before joining Lincolnshire rivals, Scunthorpe United at the start of the 2019/20 season.

giles coke GILES COKE PENNED A ONEYEAR DEAL IN SUMMER 2021 Giles Coke has penned a new one-year deal with the Mariners during the summer of 2021. The experienced midfielder joined Paul Hurst’s side back in February 2021, after receiving permission from the EFL and FA following a contract dispute and went on to become a solid figure in the central midfield role. Despite not playing in front of supporters during his time at the club during his seventeen appearances, Giles quickly became a firm favourite amongst the fan base, through his no-nonsense approach, tough tackling and calming influence in the centre of midfield.

john mcatee MCATEE JOINED GRIMSBY FROM SCUNTHORPE UNITED McAtee joined Town from Scunthorpe United during the summer following the expiration of his contract. He started out as a scholar at the Shrewsbury Town Academy, before being awarded his first professional contract with the Shrews by then manager Paul Hurst. After being released by the New Meadow club, he was snapped up by Paul Hurst at Scunthorpe United in 2019, joining his former manager once again after his departure from the Iron. McAtee has quickly cemented himself as a firm fan’s favourite with his drive, determination and passion.

david longe-king DEFENDER LONGE-KING JOINED GRIMSBY ON A TWO-YEAR DEAL The former Newport County defender joined us on a two-year deal during the summer. The Mariners have fought off strong competition from a number of clubs for the signature of the 26-year-old who became Paul Hurst’s fifth new recruit of the close season. Longe-King enjoyed a period at Biggleswade Town during the 18/19 season, making 45 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal, and helping the club achieve 14 clean sheets. Following an England C call-up whilst in the third step of football against Estonia in June 2019, David joined Albans City, where he was an everpresent making 40 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal, and contributing to 10 clean sheets in the National League South.

MAX WRIGHT WRIGHT JOINED THE MARINERS IN THE SUMMER OF 2017 Wright signed his first professional contract with the Mariners in the summer of 2017, before being given a two-year extension in the summer of 2018 by manager, Michael Jolley. Wright has been at the club from a very young age, progressing through each age group, gaining a reputation for his incredibly hard work and determination to succeed. After a number of impressive loan spells, most notably at Sc arborough Athletic, Wright was given his chance at the back end of the 2018/19 season, showing fans and staff his abilities. Wright took his chance with both hands at the start of the 2019/20 campaign, scoring his first goal for his boyhood club in our 2-0 victory over Morecambe on the opening day.

SUPPORTERS’ Association

In the Community

BARNET FC Supporters’ association “Bee as One” It’s fair to say that recent seasons won’t go down as vintage years and there are a lot of elements that have contributed to this. Despite this we are now able to sit back, reflect on the last few campaigns and identify what is missing both on and off the pitch. I am not alone in looking back at the Underhill days through rose tinted glasses and it’s easy to feel that the relationship between the supporters and the club was much closer than it is now, and I guess in many ways it was, but the big question is why? It’s often said that The Durham Suite allowed the players and supporters to mix, although true to a degree, it’s not the entire truth. The likes of Ian Hendon and Liam Hatch would be in the bar after every game regardless of the result, Ian to meet his family, Liam because he was Liam - win, lose or draw he always gave 100% and therefore supporters would be very unlikely to give him a hard time. If we won then the majority of the team would drift through, delight in the smiles and praise, if we lost then they would simply slip out of the ground as unnoticed as possible and I totally understand why. So, this leads us to where we are today, currently 18th in the league, safe from relegation but some 21 points from the play-off positions with the “togetherness” not being anywhere near where it needs to be. Everyone that I know who went to Eastleigh away mentioned how much they appreciated and enjoyed Dean and the team coming over to them at the end of the match, a last-minute winner always increases the collective togetherness, but a simple gesture like this creates huge inroads into the “one team” mindset. I know that very few, if any, of the current playing team will want their time at Barnet to be the pinnacle of their careers and that is understandable, so how do we make them want to give more for the shirt, give more for us supporters and help push us into play-off contention next season? This season saw the rebirth of the BFCSA, the main objectives have been to give our members a voice, be a recognised body that holds the club accountable and a sounding and advisor board for the Chairman and his leadership team. Our part in making the players feel more appreciated started with the introduction of the “Player of the Month” award. This award is voted on by BFCSA members and is the first time the supporter base has been able to show their collective gratitude to a player on a monthly basis. This year we will also see the return of the awards for Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year, Goal of the Season, Most Improved Player and The Lester Finch Trophy. This is the opportunity for

supporters to show their appreciation, our way to help build the right culture within the club, a culture where we win, lose and draw together - we stand shoulder to shoulder in the desire to make Barnet FC the best possible version of itself. Giving pride to the players in the shirt so that they play for you, their team mates and play for future successes. We need significant stability within the backroom team, the manager and coaches building the right culture and mindset over a prolonged period of time, stability within this team allows for a squad to be built with the right characteristics, the right desire to help us be successful and a team that us supporters can be proud to support. Switching your allegiance as a supporter is almost impossible, we don’t support Barnet because of the ground, the Chairman nor the current crop of players. We support Barnet because of our friends and/ or family. Our loyalty to the club isn’t eroded because of a season where we didn’t achieve the expected levels. But as much as we need something on the pitch to make us cheer, we also need to help encourage that thing to happen. We are one big team, we all want the same thing, we want our support of the players rewarded by their hard work and dedication, players want their efforts rewarded by our unwavering support and if this happens, then success will come to us all. Who knows what next season will bring, what the team will look and feel like? However, we have the opportunity to close this season off in the right way. If you are a member of the BFCSA then please cast your vote for the end of season awards. It’s just one of the ways that we can “Bee as One”. MIDDLESEX FA SENIOR CHALLENGE CUP FINAL POSTCARD On Tuesday 12th April, we were crowned Middlesex FA Senior Challenge Cup Winners! After following our journey to Hayes & Yeading, Ashford Town (Middlesex) and Northwood, we were up against Brentford B at Hampton & Richmond’s ground. James and Janice picked me and Max up after work and we headed through London to the ground. Despite James taking a few wrong turns, we got to the ground just after 19:00 which gave us time for a drink in the clubhouse before the game. The start of the game was quite open with both teams having their share of the ball despite playing slightly different styles of football. However, on 23 minutes it was Brentford B who took the lead with a good shot into the top corner. We went into half-time 1-0 down but showed glimpses of equalising before the break. We had a quick drink and catch up with some friends at the interval before switching ends for the second half. Shortly after the game got back underway Ryan De Havilland levelled the score from inside the box. The goal gave us momentum and we threatened the opposition but when Brentford B were awarded a penalty four minutes before the end, it was a massive blow. However, as their player stepped up to take it, Jake Askew dived the right way to save the penalty and keep us level. Just before full-time, a heavy tackle on Ephron Mason-Clark meant he had to come off which was sad to see. The game finished level and we had to go straight to penalties to decide the winner. After a nervy shootout, De Havilland had the opportunity to win the cup with the fourth penalty which he did in front of the fans. After he had won it, we made our way round for the trophy lift and the celebrations which were a lot of fun. Afterwards, we headed back to North London and got back just after 23:00. It was a dramatic but well-deserved win against Brentford B which made the whole cup run worth it!

HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH

The mariners It has been confirmed this week that the Vanarama National League Play-Off Final will take place at the London Stadium. This match will be the second successive year that the fixture has not taken place at Wembley Stadium, with last season’s final taking place at Ashton Gate, home of Bristol City. It was moved there due to the delayed Euro 2020 tournament happening at Wembley. This year sees the match to confirm next season’s 92nd member of the Football League take place at West Ham United’s ground. The fixture is set to take place on 5th June 2022. National League South side Hemel Hempstead Town have revealed that they have banned a “fan” for life who directed racist abuse at George Elokobi. The person in question was quickly identified after the match last Saturday and was given the ban. The 36-year-old is currently captain of Maidstone United who are currently leading at the top of the table. Elokobi had been out with a serious groin injury for almost six months before making a return at Vauxhall Road, where his side ran out to a convincing 4-0 win. In League Two, Forest Green Rovers have officially and mathematically been promoted to League One for the first time ever. This comes after results went their way last weekend, meaning that they are guaranteed a place in the top two. However, despite sitting top of the table by three points going into the last couple of matches of the season, they will have to wait until they better second placed Exeter City’s results to confirm the league title.

Friday evening. Having been in charge of the Red Devils since December 2019, it is reported that the FA are aware of the allegations and are investigating into them. Yems had also been in charge of the West Sussex club during the 2006/07 season, when he was joint caretaker manager. In the Championship, all three teams to be relegated have now been confirmed, after last weekend’s round of fixtures. Despite their large 21-point deduction coming into the season, Derby County failed to avoid the drop despite picking up 52 points from 13 wins and 13 draws. They will be joined in the third-tier next season by Peterborough United and Barnsley. Meanwhile in League One, no team is yet to be confirmed promoted, although Wigan Athletic, Rotherham United and MK Dons are all confirmed at least a play-off spot. At the other end of the table, Crewe Alexandra are the only club confirmed down at the time of writing, with Doncaster Rovers and AFC Wimbledon joining them if Fleetwood Town picked up a point or more vs Sheffield Wednesday last Tuesday evening.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the table, both teams being relegated have already been confirmed. Despite there being three matches left to be played Scunthorpe United will go down along with Oldham Athletic, who become the first team to have played in the Premier League to subsequently play in non-league. Crawley Town have announced that they have suspended first team manager John Yems over accusations of using discriminatory language and behaviour towards his players. The League Two side said in a statement that they were made aware of the allegations against the 62-year-old former Horsham manager and Exeter City coach late on

an Akinde effort being cleared off the line. Barnet’s third goal came in the 53rd minute when Campbell-Ryce won a free-kick just outside the corner of the box. He took the kick himself - it was only half blocked by Andrew Boyce and fell nicely for Weston to finish from six yards out. The Bees continued to have chances, but the Mariners got one back after 74 minutes. A corner from the Barnet left to the far post found Disley unmarked

Five years ago yesterday (29 April 2017), the Bees recorded a comfortable 3-1 victory over Grimsby Town at The Hive London in League Two. The Bees were 2-0 ahead by half-time though John Akinde and David Tutonda, and a Curtis Weston goal put them further ahead in the second-half, before Craig Disley grabbed a consolation goal for the Mariners. It was the penultimate match of the season, with Barnet safe in mid-table and Grimsby needing a miracle to make the play-offs. There was a carnival atmosphere, with some Mariners’ fans wearing sombreros. It was Wes Fonguck’s first start in the league and Tom Champion’s last match for the Bees. The game took 20 minutes to spring into life, with Barnet trying to play in Akinde at every opportunity and having openings through a Jamal CampbellRyce free-kick and a Michael Nelson long-range effort. When it came in the 21st minute, Barnet’s first goal was route one. Michael Nelson picked the ball up midway in the Barnet half and sent a long, high ball forward to John Akinde, who met the ball just outside the box and sent a lofted header into the top right-hand corner of the Mariners’ net, leaving ‘keeper James McKeown clawing at thin air.

and with the simplest of tap-ins from no more than two yards. Later, a replica corner ended with the same player heading wide. After the final whistle, the Barnet players undertook the customary lap of honour at the last home game and received a rousing reception for an excellent display. Akinde’s goal took him to 26 in league games in 2016/17, which saw him end the season as equal top goalscorer for League Two. Teams: Bees: Josh Vickers, Harry Taylor, Charlie Clough, Michael Nelson, David Tutonda (Elliott Johnson), Wes Fonguck (Luke Coulson), Curtis Weston, Jamal Campbell-Ryce, Jack Taylor, Simeon Akinola (Tom Champion), John Akinde. Grimsby: James McKeown, Danny Andrew, Shaun Pearson (Andrew Boyce), Danny Collins, Ben Davies, Craig Disley, Brandon Comley, Chris Clements, Jamie Osborne (Callum Dyson), Scott Vernon (Tom Bolarinwa), Sam Jones. Attendance: 3,247.

The Bees continued to press and Akinde had another opportunity. Then Simeon Akinola was on the end of a neat inter-passing move down the Bees’ left involving Campbell-Ryce, Jack Taylor and Tutonda, but his effort was blocked by McKeown. A delicate Campbell-Ryce cross bounced off the top of the crossbar before the Bees scored their second five minutes before halftime. It was a flowing move begun by Campbell-Ryce. He took a return pass from Akinde, then did the same with Fonguck before playing in Tutonda, who in turn played a one-two with Curtis Weston, moved forward and struck a low shot inside the far right-hand post. It was a cracking goal, Tutonda’s first of five for the club.

ON THIS Day

ON THIS day SIX YEARS AGO (2016) Barnet lost 4-3 at The Hive London to Yeovil Town in a fourth-tier game. Barnet’s goals came from Michael Gash and John Akinde (two). The Bees led 2-0 and 3-1 but lost at the death. The attendance was 2,379. In the first season back in the Football League the Bees finished in 15th, four places above the Glovers.

75 YEARS AGO (1947) Barnet lost at home to Hayes 3-2 in an Athenian League game. The Bees’ goals were scored by Ron Phipps and Phil Reilly. Despite this result, at the end of the season (which finished on 14 June) Barnet won the league championship on goal average from Sutton United.

&

CURRENTLY

11 YEARS AGO (2011) The Bees lost 3-1 at Accrington Stanley in the fourth tier. Mark Marshall scored the Barnet goal and the crowd was 2,764. A week later, on the final day of the season, the Bees beat Port Vale at home to avoid the drop.

The Bees’ win at Eastleigh last Saturday ensured they are mathematically safe from relegation this season. Dover Athletic and Weymouth are relegated, and the final relegation spot could be determined today.

28 YEARS AGO (1994) York City won 3-1 at Underhill in the third tier. Terry Gibson scored Barnet’s goal and 2,363 people saw the action. Barnet were relegated, but York City (now in Vanarama National League North, three levels lower) made the playoffs.

34 YEARS AGO (1988) Barnet lost 2-1 at home to Runcorn in what is now the Vanarama National League. There was a bumper crowd of 5,143 to see this key game. Barnet went into the match needing to win their final two games to be sure of clinching the championship and gaining promotion to the Football League, but a Steve Cox goal was not enough. Although the Bees won their final match a week later, Lincoln City won the league by two points, having been relegated only 12 months earlier. At that time only one side went up each season and Barnet had to wait for three more years to be promoted.

38 YEARS AGO (1984) The Bees beat Scarborough 1-0 at Underhill in the second leg of what was then the Alliance Premier League Cup but, having lost the first leg 2-0, were beaten finalists. The attendance was 1,250 and the Barnet goal came courtesy of Stewart Atkins.

Ryan De Haviland’s winning goal against Eastleigh was his first for the first team (excluding the Middlesex FA Senior Challenge Cup) and means that 17 players have now scored for the Bees this season in first team competitive games, two more players than last season. It is the most since 18 different players scored in 2018/19. Adam Marriott’s brace at Eastleigh was the third time he has scored two in a game this season. He is the first Bees player to achieve that since Shaq Coulthirst bagged a brace on four occasions in 2018/19. Marriott is now on 16 first-team goals. John McAtee is Grimsby’s top goal scorer with 13 goals (including his two penalties against Barnet in September), having scored once in every 212 minutes played in the league. Chesterfield’s Kabongo Tshimanga is the league’s top scorer with 24 goals, and he also has the best minutes to goal ratio, having scored once in every 100 minutes. If today’s game ends in a draw, it will be the Bees’ 100th home match in the Vanarama National League to have finished all square (out of 459 home games including today). Barnet go into today’s game with four wins, one draw and five defeats in their latest league 10 matches. Grimsby have won six, drawn two and lost two in their most recent 10 games, and are undefeated in their last six. Compiled by “59 Years A Bee”

MATCH Report

MATCH Report THE BEES STRUCK DEEP INTO SECOND-HALF STOPPAGE TIME TO RETURN TO WINNING WAYS – BEATING EASTLEIGH 3-2 AT THE SILVERLAKE STADIUM IN THE VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE. Eastleigh had the first attempt at goal as Michael Kelly found space to get a shot away towards the bottom corner. Aymen Azaze got down low to make the save but parried the ball into Danny Whitehall’s path who put the rebound over the crossbar from a few yards out. Vincent Harper was a real threat in the first-half and went close to scoring when he fizzed a shot narrowly wide of the post from the edge of the area. The Spitfires early pressure paid off as they took the lead in the 15th minute when Harper dispossessed Harry Taylor inside the box and squared it to Sam Smart who tapped in. The Bees had a chance to level the score in the 32nd minute when Ephron Mason-Clark cut the back from the right flank to Rob Hall who had his first-time strike blocked by Andrew Boyce. Dean Brennan’s side almost equalised moments later when Hall’s corner to Ryan De Havilland on the edge of the box was swept past Adam Marriott’s reach and wide of the post. Straight after the break the Bees were awarded a penalty after Mason-Clark was brought down by Brennan Camp. Adam Marriott was handed the responsibility for the spotkick and converted it into the bottom left corner beyond Joe McDonnell’s reach. Marriott put the visitors ahead two minutes later when he latched onto a poor clearance from Mason-Clark’s cross and lashed the ball into the bottom corner from close-range. Eastleigh responded to going behind and got themselves level in the 56th minute when Jake Hesketh’s deep free-kick from the left was headed in by Whitehall.

Smart looked to score his second of the game on the hour mark when he beat Jordan Thomas down the right wing and flashed a shot narrowly past the far post. The Spitfires had a big opportunity to retake the lead when Whitehall won and took a penalty in the 72nd minute which he crashed against the crossbar before it got cleared away by the Bees defence. With less than 10 minutes to go Reece Grego-Cox received a straight red card for a high foot on Brennan Camp – leaving the Bees to see out the remainder of the game with 10-men. Dean Brennan’s side showed their character and won it late on when Teddy Howe’s cross from the right was cleared by Michael Kelly to De Havilland inside the area who slotted it home to secure all three points.
