HEAD COACH SIAN OSMOND

SIAN OSMOND

Sian, we have had a break since our last game. How have we used the time to prepare for this weekend? “It was nice to have some time to rest after a really tough fixture against MK Dons. “The players came in at the weekend for longer than usual so that they could participate in some team bonding activities. “We have been working hard this week in training to get ourselves prepared for the visit of Portsmouth on Sunday. We are now sitting in the middle of the table, what are your aims for the final five fixtures? “We have got a tough run of games between now and the end of the season but we are looking at them positively. “We are looking to be very competitive in the games to make up for some of our results in the first half of the year. There was disappointment in our last fixture as MK Dons scored late on to secure a point. How do we make sure it does not happen again?

definitely expecting a challenge this weekend. “We know that we have the quality in our side to be competitive in the game.” Jo Wilson has scored quite a few goals lately. We have said it before but how important can she be in our final few matches? “Joey is vitally important for us to score goals and she has been really fantastic in helping us do that since coming in. “She is doing her job well and we also have a few goal contributions coming from elsewhere on the pitch too. “We still need to be more clinical in front of goal and hopefully that will help us to pick up more points.” Dan Carlton returned to the pitch after recovering from her injury against MK Dons. How has she been around the group since then? “It was obviously a massive moment for Dan who was a little bit emotional at the time, as were some of the staff.

“It is something that we have reflected on quite heavily and we came away from that game quite deflated.

“We were all so pleased to see her step onto the pitch, especially because we have been working with her for a long time during the recovery process.

“It almost felt like a loss even though we still got a point out of it.

“We are really excited to see where she goes from here because of her quality and experience.

“We have reviewed the footage back and assessed our game management towards the end.

“Dan’s minutes still need to be built up but we expect to have her ready for a full 90 minutes before the end of the season.”

“As staff we agreed that there were a few things that we could have done better and we will learn from it.

Is there any update on some of the injured players?

“The players have also grown from match and hopefully we will now be better prepared.” We host Portsmouth this weekend in the league. They showed their quality against us last time but what are you expecting from them this time? “We know that Portsmouth are a great side who are sitting in a league position that has surprised a few people. “We fully expect them to climb back up the table because of the talent they have in their team. “They have been prolific in front of goal all season and we are

“We hope to have a few players returning after having a few illnesses and injuries that have caused us problems. “We are hopeful that Lauren Heria will return but are waiting on a final clearance for that.. “Sophie Lee might also be back in contention having had some time on the sidelines.” How much are you looking forward to being back at The Hive London once again? “Yes we love being at home and hopefully we can see a few of our supporters there to cheer us on.”

WHAT’S THE Buzz

WHAT’S THE Buzz A Champions League match later this month is set to break the record attendance for any women’s club match in football history. The quarter-final second leg tie between holders Barcelona and their arch rivals Real Madrid will take place at the Nou Camp on Wednesday 30th March. Last week, over a month BEFORE the fixture was to take place, the Catalan club announced that all sections of the ground, with the exception of the VIP areas, had sold out of tickets. This means that there will be a near capacity (99,354) crowd in attendance. The previous club match attendance record was set at 60,739, when Barcelona beat Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano, three years ago in March 2019. Chelsea have confirmed that Melanie Leupolz will not play for them again this season, due to being pregnant. The 75 cap Germany international signed for the Blues in March 2020 from Bayern Munich and has gone on to be a regular in the West London side’s starting eleven. The former Freiburg player represented her country at Under 15, Under 17, Under 19, Under 20 and first-team level, winning gold at the 2016 Olympic games and the 2013 UEFA Championships. The 27-year-old will continue with the club doing light training over the remainder of the season but will not play in any matches. Vivianne Miedema’s 31st minute goal against Birmingham City last weekend saw her become the first player to reach 100 goal contributions in WSL history. The goal brought her record up to 70 goals and 30 assists as well as taking the score to 2-0 in the North London side’s favour. During the match Rafaelle Souza scored her first goal for the club, whilst Beth Mead slotted home 20 minutes from time for the third. Libby Smith and Lucy Quinn scored a goal apiece in the space of five minutes just after to put pressure on the hosts at Meadow Park, before Caitlin Foord eased their nerves by scoring to leave the game at 4-2.

WHAT’S THE Buzz

The draw for the Fifth Round of the FA Cup has been made. As it is the quarter-final stage, there are four ties. Two of these are all WSL affairs, the first being Chelsea hosting Birmingham City, and the second Manchester City, who are at home to Everton. Arsenal are at home to the only remaining Championship side, Coventry United, whilst the only National League side still remaining in the competition, Ipswich Town, have been handed a home tie against West Ham United. These ties are all scheduled to be played on Sunday 20th March.

Last weekend saw title competitors and rivals Glasgow City and Rangers both score six goals in their respective matches. Glasgow City won 6-0 at home to Motherwell, whilst Rangers won 6-1 at home against Partick Thistle. This leaves City at the top of the table with 50 points, whilst Rangers are second with 49, although are yet to lose a game. Celtic are in third place with 42 points, but Rangers have only played 17 times, compared to 19 by both Glasgow City and Celtic. Rangers are due to travel to bottom placed Hamilton Academical today.
