FLOWERS
From the Manager GOOD EVENING ALL AND I HOPE YOU ARE KEEPING WELL AHEAD OF THIS EVENING’S VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE FIXTURE WITH FC HALIFAX TOWN. I, OF COURSE, WASN’T IN THE DUGOUT FOR OUR LAST MATCH, BUT I AM NOW FEELING MUCH BETTER AND I AM READY TO HELP US GET A BIG VICTORY THIS EVENING. I felt we actually played quite well in the match with Aldershot, but yet again found a way to lose by conceding two really poor goals. To concede from two set-pieces is ultimately not good enough and we must do better at ensuring we’re not simply handing teams a way back into matches. Up the other end, we created some really good chances, which is pleasing, and I felt we kept Aldershot at arm’s length for the majority of the match. Now we have laid some foundations, we need to build on them and start finding ways to pick up points, particularly here at The Hive. This is an important week for us, with three matches in seven days, it’s a good opportunity for us to start closing the gap on the teams above us in the table. There’s no easy game in this league and Halifax will cause us problems, they are very threatening going forward and will be very well organised. It was before my time here, but the players need to avenge the result at their place, it would have hurt them so I hope they go out there with the appropriate fight to go and win the match. We’re getting closer to turning things round, I know the results are frustrating but I think we are getting there, once we get one, I really believe the tide will turn. Your support from home has been great and I hope we can make you proud to be associated with the football club this evening. See you soon,
Tim

The Captain JAMES
DUNNE
From the Captain
GOOD EVENING EVERYONE AND I HOPE YOU AND YOUR FAMILIES are keeping well during these continued challenging times. I want to also give a warm welcome to the players and staff from FC Halifax Town for this evening’s match, which I’m sure is going to be a good battle. I am gutted that we didn’t take something from the Aldershot match, I felt the tide had turned and we had done really well to get ourselves ahead in the match, after scoring a really good goal. But then yet again we switch off and concede two really poor goals from our point of view, one of which is a free-kick which goes under/through the wall. It’s becoming a broken record and we simply have to do better in these moments. We have to count ourselves lucky that we aren’t out of site of those above, but there is no more second chances because we have to start closing the gap. We have two home matches this week and with the recent postponements we have had plenty of time to prepare, so we know what we need to do to get a positive result. It’s another difficult game against a side who we were well beaten by up at their place, so we have to try to put that right this evening. I am sure it is going to come together because this is a good group and a determined group at that. We need to stamp our authority from the get-go and give our everything to get something from the match. Thanks for sticking by us and see you soon.

ALDERSHOT AWAY POSTCARD A trip to the EBB Stadium is a decent trip out, even if it does take ages to get back to Leeds afterwards! I love the fact there’s a little Buddhist temple by the car park and even though it’s an absolute trek round to the ground, walking through a park to get there is peak non-league! Although when it was a bit icy it was a death trap! I think it’s fair to say my two visits to Aldershot were polar opposites, my first the first game of the season in 28 degree heat and the second 3 days after Christmas where I was still cold even with 4 layers on! Despite the fact I’ve never actually seen a goal scored at the EBB, Aldershot is enjoyable nevertheless. Opening our first season back in non-league there in 2018 was a lovely day! Sunny football days are always class anyway but drinking with my Dad in Hemel Hempstead the night before and having an opportunity to walk around and explore the town in the sun before the game is definitely a nice memory. I must give credit to Aldershot for their defending that day, how we didn’t score I’ll never know. We had a number of impressive shots our closest probably being a free kick from Dan Sparkes which just skimmed the bar (little did we know one of the free kicks he would go on to score!) But Aldershot were an absolute unit that day and didn’t let a single of our shots past them. However, it was a good performance to start off a new era at the club and it felt like we would have a decent season. It’s fair to say my last trip there at the end of 2019, was not quite as exciting! I would like to blame the amount of food everyone ate at Christmas for that because there wasn’t much quality from either team. Still, it was a fun day, as I always think everyone is in good spirits around Christmas time and due to the coldness I had 2 of their VERY nice hot chocolates! Watching our game against Aldershot on Tuesday gave me mixed feelings. First and foremost, I was very appreciative sitting under a blanket watching because it looked absolutely freezing there! Focusing on the football, it was a much better performance and I felt disappointed to lose. However, I am hoping we can carry on with the improvement and pick up some points soon! Finally, I’d like to take this opportunity to wish Tim Flowers all the best after he missed Tuesday’s game through illness.

A-Z OF FORMER
Andy Iro IRO WAS DRAFTED SIXTH OVERALL IN THE 2008 MLS DRAFT BY COLUMBUS CREW after coach Sigi Schmid was convinced Iro would remain in the United States to play. Iro made his professional debut on 28th March 2008, coming on as an 89th-minute substitute in the Crew’s first game of the season against Toronto FC. He would score his first MLS goal on 6th September 2008 against New England Revolution, heading in from a free kick. Iro and the Crew would go on to have a successful season. In the 2009, Iro and the crew again dominated the competition, resulting in their second consecutive Supporters Shield. As a result of their accomplishments from the previous year, Iro also saw his first continental action in the 2009-10 CONCAFF Champions League where he captained his side. During his time with the club, Iro made 58 league appearances and scored five goals.
Toronto FC With Iro’s inexplicably falling out of favour in addition to his looming contract situation, Columbus Crew traded him along with teammate Leandre Griffit in July 2011 to Toronto FC for Tony Tchani. He made his debut on 20 July 2011 against FC Dallas. He would appear for Toronto in 13 league games in addition to competing in the 2011-12 CONCAFF Champions League. At the end of the season, Iro and Toronto could not agree on a new contract and he left the club.
England Following his departure from Toronto, Iro signed Stevenage FC in September 2012. The move meant Iro would be playing under Gary Smith, a former Major League Soccer manager for Colorado Rapids, who he had known during his time playing in the United States. In November 2012, having failed to make a firstteam appearances for Stevenage, Iro joined League Two side Barnet FC on loan until January 2013. The loan at Barnet was extended until 9 February. Iro made 9 league appearances for Barnet, scoring once, before returning to Stevenage. Iro returned to Stevenage in February 2013 but did not appear in any first team games for the club. He made no senior appearances for Borough. Iro is the only Barnet player I could find that had a last name beginning with I which was interesting. Whilst at Barnet he lived close to me just a 5-minute walk up into Muswell Hill. I regularly saw him. On his twitter it says he lives in California Los Angeles but there is little information about his job nowadays although he is an ex uber driver.

We also congratulate Stuart lustigman , Maccabi GB Vice President who’s 50 years of dedication was recognised by induction into the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, based at the Wingate Institute in Netanya, Israel, what an amazing achievement. And we continue to wait for the safe return of our football sessions. Stay safe
TODAY’S OPPOSITION Following the demise of Halifax Town AFC at the end of the 2007-2008 season, a new Club was born and re-formed just in time for the 20082009 season. The new Football Club was placed in Level Four of the NonLeague pyramid, taking a place in the Northern Premier League, in Unibond North One and called FC Halifax Town. The elevation of Exeter City and Plymouth Argyle to the Time was short and the new Club was faced with appointing a new Manager and bringing a team together from scratch in only five weeks. Jim Vince, a coach in the Crewe Alexandra Football Academy working closely with Crewe Manager Dario Grady and a former Manager of Witton Albion in the Unibond Premier Division, achieving two consecutive second places in the previous two seasons, was appointed. Pre –season friendlies were hastily arranged
and the first ever game by the Club was played at Tamworth, when 22 trialists made appearances for the Club, trying to catch the eye of the new Manager. The first ever official game for FC Halifax Town was a home game against Bamber Bridge at the Shay Stadium. For the Halifax fans, it was an emotionally charged game; as they were so relieved to see their beloved ‘Shaymen’ play a real game of football again, after all the heartache of previous. Over 1,500 fans attended the game, watching a team that barely knew one another. Perhaps with a possible sign of things to come, the Club went in at half-time 0-0, but ended up losing the game 3-0. Not the best of starts! Disappointingly, the team had a mediocre first season and for whatever reason, Jim Vince struggled to get things going with any real conviction on the pitch, culminating in a far from satisfactory 8th place, even missing out on a Play-Off place. A new Club and striving for stability and continuity, reluctantly the Board had to make a change, with Jim Vince leaving the position prior to the end of the season and player, Nigel Jemson taking the club though to the end of the season. Players who have gone on to play at a higher level include from that season include, Junior Brown in League Two at Fleetwood Town, Colin Daniel a loanee who is now playing in League Two also with Mansfield Town and Gavin Rothery at Guiseley. An early appointment was made for the 2009-2010 season, with Neil Aspin joining from Conference North side, Harrogate Town. Despite dropping two divisions he was confident of a bright future for the Football Club and was ready for the challenge of moving the club further up the pyramid. A mixture of new recruits, players known to him and some already involved with the Club from the previous season, he set about trying to establish a successful team. As we all know, achieving promotion from any division is a huge challenge and the early pace setters were Lancaster City,
scoring goals for fun with striker Jordan Connerton hitting a rich vein of form, gaining him a move to Crewe Alexandra and seemingly winning games, no matter what. At one stage in to the second half of the season, they held a twelve point lead over the Shaymen, although Halifax had lost a lot of games through postponement due to the weather. Fighting their way through the backlog, the ultimate period in the second season and the moment at which Halifax moved in to pole position in the league, was an eventful three match period spread over six days, in the final third of the season. Garforth away on a Thursday night, two minutes to go the Shaymen losing 3-1. A goal for the Shaymen, 3-2. The referee announces four extra minutes and in the 91st minute another goal, 3-3. Everyone was delighted, equalising so late and hopefully securing an unlikely point out from the game. What drama was to follow, with the last kick of the game Richard Marshall thirty yards away from goal, produced an exquisite lob to beat the keeper for a 4-3 win. Despite Lancaster winning on the same night, they were told the Shaymen had lost, so what a shock when they got back on their coach, only to find Halifax had won so late in the game. A real night of drama! Our next home game on the Saturday? You guessed, Lancaster City at home at the Shay Stadium. In front of over three thousand fans, the afternoon was electric and Halifax won the game comfortably, 4 nil and taking over the leadership of the division. The following Monday evening was a tough away game at Curzon Ashton who were also in the play-off places and Halifax recorded a stunning 5 nil away win. From then on, momentum carried the team to its first promotion as Champions, with 100 points and over 100 goals. A step up to the newly sponsored EvoStik Premier division. With some more astute signings and the average age of the team being reduced, Halifax tried to emulate the previous season. Again, the Club achieved promotion and the Championship, with five games to spare, missing the 100 points by just two and again scoring over 100 goals. As in the previous season, the Club just missed out on the 1st Round proper of the FA Cup, losing to Wrexham in 2009-10 to a 97th pile-driver and 2010-11, to a 1 nil defeat against Mansfield Town. A nice recognition for the Club was goalkeeper Jonathan Hedge being called in to the England ‘C’ squad as he had also been chosen in the previous season. The only blot on a wonderful season was the emotional loss of Neil’s assistant Trevor Storton, who sadly died after a long battle with cancer. He was with the team nearly all the way, passing away just before our promotion was secured. Promotion was a fitting tribute to a wonderful man. So, 2011-2012 saw the arrival in the Football Conference and the Blue Square Bet North division. Another tough challenge, made all the harder with the departure of star striker Jamie Vardy, after only four games of the new season. Jamie making a move to then Conference Premier, Fleetwood Town and soon to be Champions, making their way in to the Football League for the first time in their history. Jamie shortly made a second move to Championship Club, Leicester City becoming the first £1m non-league player. Despite that set-back on the pitch, the Shaymen battled their way to a play-off position, to meet Gainsborough Trinity. In the away first leg, a disastrous start being two nil down in the first twenty minutes and seeing very little of the ball. Two Lee Gregory goals, one just before half time and one
midway through the second half brought the Shaymen back in to the tie for the second leg. In front of over three thousand fans in the second leg, Town could not turn their superiority in to goals and lost to a set piece, one nil. The season was also highlighted by finally achieving the FA Cup First Round Proper and what a draw. League One leaders Charlton Athletic who were to go up as Champions and the game also being chosen for national live TV broadcast. Managing to stay in the game one nil until the 80th minute was very creditable, but once Danny Lowe was harshly sentoff, the team eventually lost 4 nil. Nevertheless, what a great day and profile for the Club. Understanding the league a little more, Neil Aspin brought in one or two fresh faces for the 2012-2013 campaign and said ‘goodbye’ to some good players, who had helped the Club progress so much. This season in particular was the hardest for the Club since reformation, only due to the number of match cancellations, both home and away for a variety of reasons, but mainly the incredible amount of rain. The fixture backlog and numerous re-arrangements took their toll and Halifax would have to do well, playing so many games a week to secure a play-off spot. This they did in fifth place and faced a local derby against Guiseley in the semis, who were in the play-offs for the third consecutive season. Chester FC had walked away with the Championship. After a 1 all draw at the Shay Stadium, Halifax managed a two nil deserved win away at Nethermoor, with Gregory and Johnson getting the goals. So to the Final and a long trip to Brackley, who in their first season has done tremendously well and it was going to be a difficult tie. In a tight game perhaps dominated by the Shaymen, Lee Gregory scored the only goal of the game to send the fans in to raptures and earn a place in the Conference Premier division, for the first time in their history. A great achievement in five years with three promotions, but everyone involved with the Club knows this will be a tough campaign and despite that, everyone is up for the challenge and look forward to welcoming everyone to Halifax and the Shay Stadium. The following season FC Halifax Town finished 5th in the Skrill Premier and the play-offs beckoned again, this time with the chance of a Wembley final and promotion to the Football League. However despite a 1-0 home win over Cambridge United at the Shay, a 2-0 defeat at the Abbey Stadium saw Cambridge head to Wembley. Last season, Town had a great start to the season and got to the quarter finals of the FA Trophy. However after defeat to Wrexham in the quarter finals, the season petered out and Town finished in mid table. Neil Aspin promised a number of changes over the summer, which he has duly promised. However, just a few games into the season, Aspin departed the Club having been in charge for over 300 games. Aspin’s departure would kickstart the managerial merry-go-round that was to come in the next few years. Gareth McClelland, Darren Kelly and Jim Harvey all had spells in charge during the 2015/16 season. The season was to be one of mixed emotions as Town were relegated from the National League. A terrible start to the season was then met by a revival under Harvey but the damage was already done.
Despite the relegation, The Shaymen made it to Wembley for the first time in their history. FC Halifax Town beat Nantwich Town 6-4 on aggregate to reach the final of the FA Trophy. Grimsby Town were the opponents that day and a early second half goal from Scott McManus was enough to give the Town fans their dream day out in the capital as The Shaymen lifted the FA Trophy. The 2016/17 season saw another manager in charge as Billy Heath took over the coaching duties and was able to guide Town straight back to the National League. Town had finished 3rd in the National League North and were promoted after winning the playoff final against Chorley. Heath’s second season in charge did not get off to a good start as Town languished near the bottom of the league. Eventually, the decision was made to part ways with Billy Heath and Neil Young was given the role of caretaker manager until Jamie Fullarton, was instated on a permanent basis. Fullarton managed to save The Shaymen from relegation in 2017/18 as they ended up finishing 16th. In the 2018/19 season, Town had one of the highest clean sheet records but struggled for goals and finished in mid
table. However Jamie Fullarton decided to leave the Club in mid July and former Oldham boss Pete Wild took charge for the 2019/20 season. Wild guided The Shaymen to a 6th placed finish after 37 matches - due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the season was cut short in late-March. Halifax played the final televised National League game that season – a 1-0 loss to Ebbsfleet, this would be Town’s last game up until the league made the decision to go ahead with the play-offs. This resulted in Town playing Boreham Wood away in the National League Play-Off eliminator in July – four months after the season ended abruptly. The Shaymen unfortunately lost the match, after going 1-0 up through Tobi Sho-Silva, the Wood came back to win 2-1. Wild is tasked with another season as the boss at the Shay, and has had a Summer overhaul ahead of the 2020/21 season.
PETE WILD
The Manager
WILD PLAYED AMATEUR FOOTBALL BEFORE TAKING UP COACHING AT THE AGE OF 18 After working for the club for 10 years, including as their interim academy manager Wild was appointed as Oldham’s caretaker manager on 27 December 2018 following the sacking of Frankie Bunn. He won his first two games in charge. On 6 January 2019 he led the club to a “famous” FA Cup victory against Premier League club Fulham, his third straight win as manager. Following the match he said that he was considering stepping down as caretaker manager, stating that “I’ve been an academy manager two minutes the fairytale will come to an end at some point, reality will strike. And you’ve got to be prepared for that. I’ve got a family to support and a mortgage to pay”. After eight matches in charge (four wins, three losses, and one draw) he was replaced as Oldham manager by Paul Scholes on 11 February 2019. Wild’s final game in charge was a 3–0 away victory at Crawley Town two days previously. In March 2019, following the resignation of Scholes, Wild returned as caretaker manager. On 22 March 2019, he was appointed the club’s permanent manager, on a contract until the end of the season. He left the club in May 2019, for “personal reasons”. On 24 July 2019, Wild was appointed the manager of National League Premier side FC Halifax Town. In November 2019 he was linked with the vacant Grimsby Town manager’s job, but he denied receiving an approach from them.

What’s the Buzz Josh Palmer
National League South side Chelmsford City have signed former Premier League star Simeon Jackson. The former 49 cap Canada international played 35 appearances in the top flight across two seasons for Norwich City. He was born in Kingston, Jamaica, before moving to Ontario, Canada, at a young age, gaining citizenship, allowing him to play for their national team. The 33 year old then moved to England as a teenager to progress his football career, started out at Dulwich Hamlet, before moving on to Rushden and Diamonds, Raunds Town, Gillingham, Norwich, Eintracht Braunschweig in the Bundesliga, Millwall, Coventry City, Barnsley, Blackburn Rovers, Walsall, Grimsby Town, St Mirren, Kilmarnock and Stevenage.
This weekend saw the fifth round of the FA Trophy be played. The round saw two out of the eight ties be competed by two National League Premier sides, firstly Woking beating Sutton United 1-0 at Gander Green Lane, and Aldershot vs Chesterfield being postponed after members of the Spireites’ squad and management returning a positive Covid test. Darlington defeated our local rivals Wealdstone 4-1, Hereford defeated National League North rivals Leamington 1-0, Notts County travelled to Havant and Waterlooville and won 4-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw, Torquay United defeated Southport 2-0 away, Oxford United overcame Peterborough Sports 2-0, and Hornchurch of the Isthmian League, the lowest ranked club still remaining in the competition, won 5-4 against National League South side Maidstone United.
Despite some clubs having stated they they’ll refuse to play, it has been announced that the National League North and South will continue this weekend, after a break of two weeks. The divisions were initially paused after a dispute over funding, which is still yet to be settled. It was decided to continue the fixtures because there is still a possibility that they would be forced to soon anyway, as a result of the upcoming vote on whether to void the season again. If the vote in a few weeks’ time returns a result showing that the season will continue, then there would not be enough time available to complete all the remaining fixtures.

Jim Parmenter, the chairman of Dover Athletic, has this week resigned from his position on the National Leagues’ board of directors. He announced this through a published open letter, revealing his motive for stepping down being a disagreement over the league’s recent position on the lack of funding received to play matches. He has also described the “chaos” in the leagues’ position, with clubs being split on the idea of continuing the season or null and voiding it. He also went on to imply that there were some decisions that were made by the board were then not carried out.
The youngest player to ever play for Wrexham has passed away over the weekend, aged 84. Ken Roberts made his debut for the Red Dragons in 1951, in a fixture again Bradford (Park Avenue), aged just 15 years and 158 days. This was also the joint record for the youngest player in the Football League, having originally been set by Albert Geldard, ironically of Bradford (Part Avenue). Roberts’ record would stand until 2008, when Reuben Noble Lazarus, then at Barnsley, broke the record by 113 days. That fixture would turn out to be his only match for Wrexham, before going on to play 38 times for Aston Villa, scoring three times. He would then managed Chester between 1968 ad 1976, and Oswestry Town between 1983 and 1984.
It has been revealed that the weekend of the 13th and 14th March will see a double header of EFL Trophy finals be played. First up, on the Saturday, will be the originally postponed 2020 edition, known as the Leasing.com Trophy, which will see Portsmouth face Salford City, having originally been scheduled to be played last April but was postponed due to the pandemic. Then, on the Sunday, will be the 2021 final, called the Papa John’s Trophy. This year’s competition is still at its’ semi final stage, with Oxford United vs Tranmere Rovers and Sunderland vs Lincoln City set to take place next Tuesday and Wednesday respectively. Both fixtures will take place at Wembley Stadium, and of course will be played behind closed doors.

Match Report 2 ALDERSHOT TOWN FC
DESPITE TAKING THE LEAD AND AN IMPROVED PERFORMANCE, THE BEES FELL TO DEFEAT AT THE HANDS OF ALDERSHOT TOWN. IN A TIGHT OPENING FIRST 10 MINUTES, IT WAS THE HOSTS WHO HAD THE BEST CHANCE, AS RICKY MILLER CURLED A FREE-KICK WELL OVER FROM 25 YARDS. Meanwhile, up the other end, Courtney Baker-Richardson curled an effort from range well wide of Mitch Walker’s goal. It was a cagey opening 20 minutes at the EBB but in truth, the Bees would have been pleased with their solid start to the evening. The lively Myles Judd was next cause the host’s problems, as his teasing cross was just flicked away from the on-rushing Anthony Wordsworth who was charging in towards the back post. Just after the midway point of the half, the hosts were next to threaten, as Miller curled a shot wide of the post after jinking past two Bees defenders. As half time approached it was the Shots who had the final opportunity as Harrison Panatiotou dragged an effort into the
1 BARNET FC
arms of Scott Loach, in what was the only meaningful effort of the half. The Bees made the perfect start to the second half as they took the lead on 53 minutes. Wordsworth played a quite frankly magical cross into the box, leaving Michael Petrasso to head the ball home from six yards out. It should have been two just moments later, as Petrasso burst clear after good work from Baker-Richardson, but his low effort was brilliantly saved by Walker. The Bees were punished on the hour mark after a recycled corner found it’s way to Sendles-White who turned home from close range. It was nearly a quickfire double for the hosts, as one long ball went through to Nouble who lobbed Loach but his effort struck the crossbar and bounced clear. It was the hosts who ultimately took the lead with twenty minutes from time as substitute and former Bee Mo Bettamer drove a low free-kick into the bottom corner. The Bees looked for a leveller as Mason-Clark cut inside and shot, but his effort struck JJ Hooper on its way over the crossbar. In the absence of Tim Flowers, the Bees huffed and puffed but ultimately couldn’t find a crucial equaliser to take anything from the game.
