FLOWERS
From the Manager GOOD AFTERNOON ALL AND I HOPE YOU ENJOYED THAT LONG-AWAITED VICTORY ON TUESDAY NIGHT. AS I SAID IN MY MEDIA INTERVIEWS, THAT WIN REALLY WAS FOR YOU AND NOW THE STANDARD HAS CERTAINLY BEEN SET GOING FORWARD. As a side note, I want to welcome Dowse and all of his players to The Hive this afternoon, I am sure it’s going to be another good battle out there. Starting with the decision from the league, it is an irrelevance, I want to finish the season as high in the league as possible and continue to make the fans proud. Tuesday night was really pleasing but I want to build on that and start looking up the table rather than down it. That’s the standard now, the boys ran themselves into the ground and that has to be the minimum expectation for every game for the rest of this campaign. I want us to start building for next season and I’ll have talks about that in the coming weeks, it’s important that we have a plan and we have a real go at it next season. But in the meantime, I want us to win football matches and make our supporters proud to support this great Club. That continues today and I am looking forward to seeing what we have to offer out there this afternoon. Despite everything that’s going on, let me assure you that there’ll be no downing tools at this Club, not a chance. This afternoon is going to be a really tough match, make no mistake about it. Dowse has Woking playing some really good stuff and they swept us aside in the reverse fixture on what was an extremely disappointing afternoon for the Club. We owe it to ourselves to right those wrongs and take the game to Woking. I think it’ll be another really entertaining contest this afternoon. For now, please take care and cheer us on from home!

The Captain JAMES
DUNNE
From the Captain
GOOD AFTERNOON ALL AND I HOPE EVERYONE IS DOING WELL AHEAD OF TODAY’S GAME AGAINST WOKING. I am glad we finally got a win for you on Tuesday night It’s been a long time coming, so let’s hope the wait for the next one isn’t so long. In fact, let’s get ourselves back-to-back victories so we can look on up the table. Regardless of what is going on off the pitch at the moment, me and the boys mindset won’t change towards matches. The gaffer has hammered home how we have to go full throttle into every match, we did just that on Tuesday night, so that has laid the foundations going forward. We want to make our fans proud and finish as high up the table as possible, a win today would certainly help us continue to close the gap on those immediately above us. Last time against Woking, we simply weren’t at the races. We avenged the defeat to FC Halifax Town on Tuesday, so now it’s about doing the same against the afternoon. It won’t be an easy game but we’re confident that we can go out there and get the three points this evening. Take care,
Dunney

BARNET OVER 50’S Football v homophobia On February 1st 2018, The Barnet Walking Football Team became the first Walking Football Team in the UK to recognise and support the FVH (Football v Homophobia) campaign a fact recognised by the organisation. February is chosen as a reminder that in Feb 1961 Justin Fashanu was born and sadly in 1998 he committed suicide he still is the only British based footballer to come out as gay. Every February we join the FVH campaign supported by The FA who are the governing body for walking football to show solidarity. Sadly with covid we moved our show of support online to our Zoom meet up Anything which stops people participating and enjoying the national game of football has to be tackled and eradicated. Our motto at the Barnet Walking Football Team is plain and simple... Football for everyone.
TODAY’S OPPOSITION Woking Football Club, known as the Cards (from the Cardinal red of the red and white halves), was formed in 1889. The Club joined the West Surrey League in 1895/96, winning the title by one point on the final day of the season. However, within 21 years of being formed, the Club was in danger of folding for financial reasons. The turning point came when, in January 1908, Woking played Bolton Wanderers in the First Round of the FA Cup, having battled through five qualifying rounds. Despite losing the away game 5-0, the Club made it into the national press. Bolton Wanderers, impressed by the minnows they had defeated, travelled to Woking for a friendly match the following season, which kept the Club solvent.
ISTHMIAN LEAGUE YEARS In 1911 the Club joined the Isthmian League, maintaining their place in the top division for 72 years and finishing as runners-up to Wycombe Wanderers in 1956/57. That achievement was eclipsed the following season when, in
front of a 71,000 crowd, the Cards beat Ilford 3-0 in the last FA Amateur Cup Final to be televised live. Sadly, the Club then went into decline, culminating in a first-ever relegation in 1982/83. By the end of the 1984/85 season the Club had plunged to Division Two South of the Isthmian League. It was during that season that former player, Geoff Chapple, was appointed as manager. Although he was not able to save the Club from relegation, the renaissance was underway. Just missing out on promotion at the first attempt, the Club clinched the Division Two South title in 1986/87 and, after two third place finishes in Division One, they were promoted back to the Premier Division at the end of the 1989/90 season.
FA CUP GLORY The next season saw the Club become part of FA Cup folklore. Entering the competition at the Fourth Qualifying Round, they beat three Conference sides to set up a Third Round tie away to West Bromwich Albion. Recovering from being a goal behind, Woking triumphed 4-2, thanks to a superb team effort and a never-to-be-forgotten hat-trick from Tim Buzaglo. To be drawn out of the hat with a home game against Everton was beyond everyone’s wildest dreams. The tie was switched to Goodison Park and, against a team packed with internationals, the sides were separated only by a solitary Kevin Sheedy goal. Over 34,000 people remained in the ground to give the players a rapturous standing ovation.
PROMOTION TO THE CONFERENCE AND FA TROPHY SUCCESS Promotion to the Conference was achieved in 1991/92. The Isthmian League title was clinched in early April, with seven
games still to be played. Nearest rivals, Enfield, had been swept aside 5-0 in a scintillating display of flowing, attacking football and the season ended with the Club 18 points clear of the Londoners. The new season kicked off with very few of the allconquering championship side in the line-up. After a shaky start a very respectable eighth place finish was achieved. The following summer saw Chapple make one of the most inspired signings in the history of the Club. Clive Walker, the former Chelsea, Sunderland, Fulham and QPR winger, was signed from Brighton & Hove Albion and he was to prove the catalyst in the most successful period in the Club’s history. The FA Trophy was won in 1994, 1995 and 1997 and the Cards also achieved five successive top five finishes in the Conference, including being runners-up in 1994/95 and 1995/96. The Club also continued to enjoy fine FA Cup runs. Barnet were defeated in successive seasons. In 1996/97 the Cards beat Millwall, then top of Division Two, and Cambridge United, who were challenging for promotion from Division Three. The Third Round draw paired the club with Coventry City. The game was closely fought, with the Premiership outfit 1-0 ahead with only seconds remaining at their Highfield Road ground. Then Steve Thompson struck to earn a replay. Although Coventry City ran out 2-1 winners at Kingfield, courtesy of a cruel own-goal, many people felt that Woking had more than held their own.
GEOFF CHAPPLE’S DEPARTURE AND RETURN At the end of the 1996/97 campaign, having just clinched the FA Trophy for the third time, Geoff Chapple and his coach, Colin Lippiatt, left the Club and joined Kingstonian. John McGovern, the former Derby County, Nottingham Forest and Leeds United midfielder, was appointed. Hopes were high that he would lead Woking into the League but, although the Club finished in third place, his style of play and his personality did little to endear him to the fans. A poor start to the 1998/99 campaign led to his dismissal. Brian McDermott, the former Arsenal player, joined Woking on a non-contract basis and achieved a temporary upturn in fortunes, guiding the team to a ninth place finish. However, the Club struggled again in 1999/00 and McDermott was relieved of his duties in March 2000. Colin Lippiatt returned and secured a 14th place finish. The 2000/01 season saw yet another poor start. The signing on loan of Chris Sharpling proved crucial in enabling the Cards to pull clear and achieve another 14th place finish. The team struggled once more in the 2001/02 season. Defeat in the FA Cup, by Newport County, saw Colin Lippiatt stand down and become the number two at the Club, with a certain Mr Geoff Chapple back as manager. Hopes that the duo could restore Woking’s status at the top of the non-League game proved sadly unfounded. Colin Lippiatt departed in January 2002 and Glenn Cockerill, the former Southampton midfielder, joined as Chapple’s assistant. The season ended with the Club just one place above the relegation places. In the meantime very significant events had taken place off the field. The downturn in the Club’s fortunes had led to a financial crisis. With the Club facing administration or worse, successful businessman and long-time fan, Chris Ingram,
came to the rescue, becoming Chairman in February 2002. He continues to own the ground, with the Club enjoying a 125-year lease at a peppercorn rent, but his financial backing of the Club and involvement in its running ceased at the end of the 2010-11 season.
GLENN COCKERILL TAKES OVER The 2002/03 season saw the Club get off to its best-ever start in the Conference. However, ‘black September’ brought seven consecutive defeats and a rapid descent into the relegation zone. Geoff Chapple resigned and Glenn Cockerill took over as manager, initially on a temporary basis. After an incredible sequence of results – winning and losing alternate games in a run of 12 matches and then embarking on nine consecutive draws – it all turned on the last day of the season. Woking went into the final game second from bottom, knowing that even a win over Telford would not guarantee their Conference status for 2003/04. However, a convincing 3-0 win for the Cards, plus victories by arch rivals Stevenage Borough, at home to Southport, and Farnborough Town, away to Nuneaton Borough, ensured relegation for those two defeated clubs and a massive sigh of relief around Kingfield. The Club went full-time in the summer of 2003. The fans’ hopes were borne out by a much better season, with the Cards achieving a ninth place finish, having been on the fringe of the play-off places until the last few weeks. Again, only a poor finish the following season deprived the Cards of a play-off place, but a final placing of 8th with 68 points was the best achievement since 1997/98. Disappointingly, the Cards failed to mount a challenge for a play-off place in 2005/06, finishing in 11th place. But they made the most of favourable draws in the FA Trophy, reaching the Final at Upton Park, only to lose 2-0 to Grays Athletic. 2006/07 was another season of underachieving and, despite bringing in fresh faces during the January transfer window, Glenn Cockerill was unable to turn around a poor run of results and left Kingfield at the end of March 2007, with relegation a distinct threat. Graham Baker and Club Captain Neil Smith took over for the final six games and steered the Cards to a safe 15th place.
RELEGATION The reprieve proved only temporary, with the following two seasons producing more disappointment, culminating in the Cards’ relegation in summer 2009 from the BSP after 17 years in the top flight of non-League football. In summer 2008 Frank Gray and Gerry Murphy assembled a young squad but the Board became disillusioned with the style of play and apparent lack of ambition and they left the Club by mutual consent shortly before the season ended, with the Cards finishing in 17th place. The appointment in May 2008, of Kim Grant, the former Charlton striker and Ghanaian international, as Head Coach, with Phil Gilchrist as his Assistant, proved disastrous. A poor start to the season led to Grant’s contract being terminated after only seven games, with Gilchrist taking temporary charge. Gilchrist was confirmed as Manager shortly afterwards but, while he steadied the ship, the Club still found itself facing relegation with six games to go. Graham Baker was appointed caretaker manager but, with other clubs making the best of their games in hand, he was unable to lift the Club above fourth from bottom.
BLUE SQUARE SOUTH Baker was confirmed as Manager just before the season ended and set about building a new side to compete in the Blue Square South, with Jimmy Dack as his assistant. A storming end to the 2009-10 season saw the Cards clinch 5th place. Dover Athletic were beaten in the play-off semifinal but the Cards lost to Bath City in the final. The Club went part-time in summer 2010, with Baker and Dack both being awarded new two-year contracts. But, in spite of good runs in the FA Cup and the FA Trophy, both decided to leave the Club in January 2011, with Garry Hill taking over the reins till the end of the season, with Steve Thompson as First Team Coach. A dramatic upturn in league fortunes took the Club into 5th place, but the Cards lost to Farnborough in the play-off semi-final. The revival continued apace in the 2011-12 season, with the Cards reaching the top spot in late September and staying there throughout the campaign in spite of being pushed hard by Dartford. The BSBS title was won by nine points, with only five games lost all season. The Cards finished in a comfortable 12th place in their first season back in the Conference Premier, playing an entertaining brand of football, and did even better the following season, ending in 9th place after showing great form in the second half of the campaign.

The 2014-15 campaign saw the Club finish in a commendable 7th spot, missing a play-off place by only three points. Garry Hill maintained his record of top-half finishes the following season as the side ended in 12th position. But the summer of 2016 saw the loss of some experienced players and the side struggled throughout the 2016-17 season, eventually averting relegation thanks to generally improved form from the new year onwards, finishing in 18th place.
ANTHONY LIMBRICK APPOINTED MANAGER In May 2017, following an announcement that new investment would take place in the Club, Anthony Limbrick was appointed manager, with Jason Goodliffe joining him as assistant manager shortly afterwards. The Club also announced that it would be moving gradually to full-time status.
ALAN
DOWSON
The Manager
ALAN, BETTER KNOWN AS ‘DOWSE’, took over as Woking manager in May 2018 following the Cards relegation from the National League. Despite starting the season with just one contracted player as well as a whole host of other issues to be resolved both on and off the pitch, Dowse enjoyed a superb first season as boss, earning an immediate return to the top flight of non-league football with promotion via the play-offs. After finishing as runners-up to Torquay United, the Cards defeated Wealdstone and Welling United in the end of season competition to bounce back at the first attempt, much to the delight of everyone associated with the club. His side continued that great form into the shortened 2019/20 season, securing a top 10 finish in the National League for the first time since 2015. It hasn’t just been in the league that Dowse has tasted success, as he also led the Cards to the third round of the FA Cup in his debut season, the first time Woking have progressed to that stage since 1997. They knocked out League 2 side Swindon Town on route to a third round meeting with Premier League Watford, which ended in an admirable 2-0 defeat, in front of a sold out crowd at the Laithwaite Community Stadium. Dowse has an enviable record of success throughout a 15 plus year run in non-league football. After enjoying a playing career which took him to Millwall,
Fulham, Bradford City and Darlington, he became player-manager at Walton and Hersham in 2004, with the highlight of a three-year spell being a run to the fourth round of the FA Trophy the following year. In 2007 he moved to Kingstonian where he led the club to promotion from the Isthmian Division One South as champions. His side also twice reached the play-offs of the Isthmian Premier Division, including one final in 2010, which saw the K’s defeated by Boreham Wood. In 2014, supported by his now familiar backroom team of Ian Dyer and Martin Tyler, Dowse joined Hampton & Richmond Borough, winning promotion from the Isthmian Premier at the second attempt as the Beavers went up as champions. Their fine form continued into National League South as back-toback play-off campaigns followed – with only a penalty shoot-out defeat at the hands of Braintree Town preventing the club from earning promotion to the National League in 2018. That would prove to be Dowse’s final game with Hampton as he took his self-proclaimed dream job at Woking that summer – quickly winning over supporters with his selfless work off the pitch to engage and galvanise the local community, whilst backing it up with results and ultimately promotion on it.

Harvey White HARVEY JOINED THE CARDS IN THE SUMMER OF 2020 AFTER A SUCCESSFUL TRIAL PERIOD. The young goalkeeper, who will provide competition for first-choice stopper Craig Ross, started his career with Queens Park Rangers before joining Watford, where he was part of the club’s Under-23 setup last season. He also spent time on loan with Stratford Town and Hendon during the 2019/20 campaign.
Jose Casey JOSH IS WOKING’S CLUB CAPTAIN AND IS CURRENTLY MIDWAY THROUGH A TWOYEAR CONTRACT EXTENSION HE SIGNED IN THE SUMMER OF 2019 Following the Cards promotion to the National League at the end of the previous campaign. He joined the club in 2018 alongside manager Alan Dowson and several other former Hampton players who subsequently formed the core of the club’s play-off winning side. A natural leader and an industrious left-sided defender, he has become a firm fan favourite at the Laithwaite Community Stadium, as emphasised by the number of personal accolades he’s won during his two years at the club. The skipper enjoyed a clean sweep of the end of season awards in 2019 when he took home the Manager’s, Players’, and Fans’ Player of the Year awards.
Charlie Cooper CHARLIE JOINED WOKING IN THE SUMMER OF 2020 AFTER IMPRESSING MANAGER ALAN DOWSON DURING A BRIEF TRIAL PERIOD. The ball-winning midfield player spent last season with fellow National League side FC Halifax Town, for whom he made 30 appearances in all competitions, helping the Shaymen reach the end of season play-offs. He also scored once, in a 5-2 win over Maidenhead United. He was offered a new contract to remain at the Shay, but opted to return south instead, eventually joining the Cards.
Dave Tarpey DAVE EXTENDED HIS STAY AT THE LAITHWAITE COMMUNITY STADIUM INTO A THIRD SEASON WHEN HE SIGNED A NEW CONTRACT IN THE SUMMER OF 2020. He initially joined the club on a one-month loan deal during the 2018/19 season, scoring three times in seven appearances, helping the Cards win promotion to the National League. After finishing the campaign with parent club Barnet, he returned to Woking that summer, becoming one of manager Alan Dowson’s first new signings ahead of the club’s return to the fifth tier. He went on to enjoy a positive season as the Cards secured a tenth place finish, predominantly playing on the right of a three-man forward line. He scored eight times in 41 appearances in all competitions, including the club’s goal of the season, a late winner in a 2-1 home victory over Hartlepool United.
What’s the Buzz Josh Palmer
South Shields’ chief executive Lee Picton has said that he hopes to have the new main stand at the 1st Cloud Arena completed by the summer, and are targeting it to be in use for the 2021/22 season. The new stand at the 3,500 capacity ground is intended to be equipped with some additional features as opposed to just seating, including a new main bar, toilets, club shop, kitchen, food kiosks, board room, media and office facilities, a cellar and some turnstiles. It has also been revealed that the stand will include 15 glass fronted commercial sponsored boxes at the top of the stand behind the seating, as well as a covered TV gantry on the roof.
New Wrexham owners and Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have revealed that they will repay the wages lost by club staff and players due to the government furlough scheme during the pandemic lockdown. The duo took over the Welsh club earlier in the month, but have insisted that they will not use their money to pay inflated wages, instead using it to pay back the wages lost when the league was suspended last March. The side go into this weekends round of fixtures sitting in 6th place in the league table, and play away at Aldershot this afternoon.
Woking, our opponents today, have revealed this week details of a vote to decide on the new badge for the club. The new badge comes as part of the Cards’ “exciting vision for new club branding”, as the club have recently accepted that they were founded in 1887, as opposed to the originally believed 1889. One the article on the club website, club historian Mark Doyle said: “No one seems to know for sure why 1889 has been used over 1887 as the ‘Officially Founded’ date of the club. There’s written confirmation from early newspaper reports and early Woking FC yearbooks which directly relate back to 1887, in addition newspaper reports at the time of the Cremators famous FA Cup encounter with Bolton Wanderers in 1908 repeat the line “the most momentous event in Woking FC’s twenty-one-year history”.

Crawley Town manager John Yems has received a two match touchline ban for an incident that occurred during his sides’ home tie against Leyton Orient earlier this month. The 0-0 draw took place on 2nd February and saw Orient go down to ten men. After the match had ended, Yems attempted to enter the referees’ changing room, with the 61 year old accepting the charge of improper conduct, the ban and a £750 fine. The former Horsham manager missed Tuesday nights’ 0-1 home loss to Stevenage, and will also miss this afternoons visit of Colchester United to the Broadfield Stadium.
Both Accrington Stanley and Northampton Town have been fined £2,500 by the FA after a melee between player late on in a game between the two sides earlier this month. The incident in question took place in the 85th minute of the League 1 tie on Saturday 6th February, a 0-0 draw at Stanley’s Wham Stadium. The clash came after a rough challenge that saw Accrington’s Joe Pritchard get sent off, with the Lancashire side unsuccessfully contesting the penalty at a later hearig. Stanley’s Sean McConville was also banned for four matches due to a separate incident earlier on in the match. Former Bee Sam Hoskins featured in the match for Northampton, being replaced by another former Bee in Mark Marshall in the 89th minute, whilst a third Bee was also involved in the match – Ryan Watson, who was an unused substitute. Ricky Holmes is also in the Cobblers’ squad, but did not feature in this fixture.
Peterborough United have announced a deal to buy their Weston Homes London Road Stadium will be completed on 31st March. The club had sold the stadium to a property developer in 2003, who late sold it to the city council in 2010, for a fee of £8 million. The club are again taking control of the stadium, with the deal originally announced back in October 2018, having had their plans to build a new one delayed due to the pandemic. The side go into this weekends round of fixtures in 3rd place in League 1, just one point off of top spot, and -4 goal difference off of the second automatic promotion spot, having played two games less.

Match Report 2 BARNET FC
THE BEES CLINCHED THEIR FIRST VICTORY OF 2021 AND THEIR FIRST IN ALL COMPETITIONS SINCE NOVEMBER WITH A 2-1 WIN OVER HALIFAX TOWN, THANKS TO GOALS FROM MICHAEL PETRASSO AND ANTHONY WORDSWORTH.
HOW IT HAPPENED The Bees were playing what was their first game in two weeks, after a number of games had been postponed due to the weather. The match had a lively opening, with the home side causing a lot of problems early on for Halifax, with Courtney BakerRichardson having a half chance within the first minute, which was comfortable for Sam Johnson. The visitors were very quick in progressing up the pitch, with some fast interchanges, but were unable to translate it into a meaningful chance. JJ Hooper had the ball in the back of the net on 18 minutes, but was judged to have kicked the ball from the goalkeepers hands and so the goal didn’t stand. Neither side were causing much of a threat on goal as we entered the halfway point in the first half, but Liam Daly very nearly found himself giving his side the lead when Anthony
1 FC HALIFAX TOWN
Wordworth’s free kick fell to him on the edge of the box and he drilled an effort just wide of the post. The Bees however would take the lead less than 10 minutes later, when Petrasso broke into space, poking a shot in the far corner of the goal and putting the home side 1-0 up. The final two minutes certainly produced a dramatic end to the first half. Wordsworth out of nowhere shot at goal, curling into the top right corner a beautiful effort to double the Bees lead. But right as the fourth official announced stoppage time, the Shaymen came up the other end to grab a goal of their own thanks to Jeff King meaning the sides would go into the break at 2-1. Halifax started the second half with a lot of the ball, aiming to build on the goal they scored just before the break, pressing high up the field against the Bees low block. The Bees though were resolute in their efforts to contain them and even looked to threaten on the break on occasions. But the visitors didn’t give up hopes of a comeback and continued to grow frustrated as the home side held their nerve against any attack which came their way, which was very much a combined effort from the Bees, as the clock continued to countdown. Despite the frantic end to the game, the Bees were able to hold onto their 2-1 lead and clinch a vital three points.
