DEAN BRENNAN
I N T E R I M
HEAD COACH DEAN BRENNAN
Dean, having played at Ashford Town (Middlesex) on Tuesday evening, how have the players fared over the last few days? “The players are doing well and I have some selection headaches ahead of this weekend’s match against Chesterfield. “Kian Flanagan is the only player unavailable for the match and he had an injection on Wednesday - so we will see how he gets on over the next week. “It is nice to have the majority of the squad back and we are really looking forward to the game.” Chesterfield are unbeaten in their last 11 league games, so what sort of match are you expecting? “They have got a winning mentality which is what we are trying to create here. “Kabongo Tshimanga has had an impressive season so far and they have got a lot of quality going forwards. “Our supporters also know what Curtis Weston is like, who is a very experienced player. “They have got a big squad and they have done a great job so far this season. “Chesterfield also had a fantastic FA Cup run which ended last weekend against Chelsea.
DEAN BRENNAN
“We have got to respect the opposition and make sure we play to our strengths and exploit their weaknesses. “I think it will be a really good game like it was against Altrincham last Saturday.” There were a few changes to our team on Tuesday evening. What sort of side can the Bees fans expect to see? “It will be a much stronger team this weekend. Ephron Mason-Clark and Daniel Powell are both back and we have got good dynamics on the front line. “We have got power and pace back again which is what my teams always have. “We have also got some stability in midfield and have talented options across the pitch. “The squad are really looking forward to the fixture and there has been a positive energy around the camp over the last few days. “Hopefully we can execute our game plan and be on the right end of the result.” We are now about halfway through the season. Are we looking to strengthen the squad in any areas? “We are always looking to strengthen and upgrade our team which is a major test for any manager. “Recruitment is the hardest part of the business but it is key if you want success. “We have had two deals fall through this
week but that is the nature of the industry.” We have a few big games coming up over the next few weeks. How much are you looking forward to that? “We can only take one game at a time and it is a tough month for us. “There are no easy games in this division and some people thought we would dominate against Altrincham last Saturday. “They are a well-drilled side and have been averaging over 2,000 at home this season. “Chesterfield are realistically a Football League club but they have got to prove that in this difficult division.” Barnet Football Club are offering all Season Membership Card Holders the chance to bring a friend for free this weekend. How important can our supporters be in a fixture like this? “I think it is a great gesture and it is important that we can start to fill our stadium. “We have got to make sure that we keep performing on the pitch to get people back to The Hive London. “People want to be entertained in this business and it is down to us to do that.”
WALKING FOOTBALL

BARNET OVER 50’S BARNET WALKING FOOTBALL TEAM We recently welcomed our friends from Age UK Harrow Hillingdon & Brent to The Hive London along with the Colindale Community Garden/ food bank team for last Saturday’s fixture against Altrincham. We all had a fantastic time celebrating Mitch Brundle’s equaliser deep into second half stoppage time! The Barnet Walking Football Team would also like to congratulate our player Mike Moate who helped facilitate a £1500 charitable donation to Colindale Food Bank. We are also very excited to have been been awarded a grant by the Middlesex FA in conjunction with MeFit Football programme in partnership with OrangeBall. Our inclusive Walking Football ethos backed up by our cycle group, walking group, community garden group and curry club has brought us to the attention of the FA and Mr Sak Rafique. We look forward to experiencing our course that includes five, one hour sessions which will focus on the well-being of our players’ body and mind. Walking Football returned to The Hive London with a bang as both Tuesday and Friday sessions had excellent numbers! Everyone is welcome to join us. TODAY’S LOOK AHEAD
Sam, just initially, how pleased are you to get your contract extended here at Barnet Football Club?
“It is definitely a target of mine and Dean Brennan is always telling me I need to score more.
“I am very happy to finally have it extended. We have a great group here and there are a lot of exciting times ahead to come.”
“We keep working on it in training so hopefully I can get more goals in the coming weeks.”
It must give you great confidence to know that the Club are showing belief in you? “Yes, it has made me feel good. I have got to thank Dean Brennan and the Chairman for having faith in me and I am looking forward to the rest of my time here.” Looking back, Christmas is normally a very busy time in football, but it was not for us unfortunately. How did you find the festive period? “It has been different and challenging, especially when the games are cancelled at the last minute. “We have been in training over the Christmas period anyway, so you have got to keep focused and looking ahead.” This Saturday we host Chesterfield who are unbeaten in their last eleven league games. How can we make that run come to an end? “It is going to be a very tough game and I am sure that we will all have to be at our best to get anything from it. “With the group we have got, there is no reason we cannot get a good result though.. “We have beaten some big teams this year, so there is no reason that we should not be able to beat them this Saturday.” Do you think they will be in high spirits having just scored at Stamford Bridge last weekend in the FA Cup? “I watched the game and Chelsea are a quality team so they will be happy with that goal. I do not think you can look too much into it though. “They have got the game on Saturday and we have done our analysis, so it should be a good game.” You were on the scoresheet at Ashford Town (Middlesex) on Tuesday evening. Is that something you are looking to add more of to your game?
What do you feel is the key to keeping the positive momentum going at The Hive London considering we are unbeaten in our last four league games here? “I think the fans play a big part. The scenes for the lastminute equaliser against Altrincham were great. “Obviously, you want to get the win, but it shows the spirit of the group to level so late on in the game. “We are going to need them on Saturday and I am sure they will be cheering us on as they always do.” There is a great togetherness here which you have touched on, how good does it feel to be a part of? “It is a really close group and we all get along well here. I think that is key to success. “When you get on with the players off the field, you can trust them when you are playing on a Saturday afternoon. “We still want to build on that because it is a relatively new group. Hopefully, we can kick on towards the end of the season and finish strongly.” With Season Membership Card Holders able to bring a friend for free on Saturday, how important is it that our supporters continue to get right behind us? “It is crucial and I am sure Chesterfield will bring a decent number of fans as they took loads to Chelsea. I am sure it will be a great atmosphere. “Our supporters have been fantastic home and away this season and we will try and get a good result for them.” “The matches that stood out for me were Wealdstone and Boreham Wood away. It felt like a home match when we went to Grosvenor Vale.” “We want to repay the support and record some positive results for them.”
THE OPPOSITION
TODAY’S OPPOSITION
Club History Chesterfield FC was officially established in 1866, though it would be the third incarnation of that name that turned professional in 1891 and changed its name to Chesterfield Town. Town entered the FA Cup for the first time the following year, and competed in the Sheffield & District League and Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup, before joining the Midland League in 1896–97. A third-place finish in 1898–99 resulted in a successful application to the Football League Second Division for the following season. After ten seasons in the Second Division they failed to gain re-election to the League and returned to the Midland League in 1909, as champions in 1909–10. The club entered liquidation in 1915, and were reformed as Chesterfield Municipal in April 1919. They again rejoined the Midland League and finished as champions in 1919–20. The club was renamed Chesterfield FC in December 1920, and became founder members of the Third Division North in 1921–22. They marked their tenth season in the division, 1930–31, by winning the title, though only managed two seasons in the Second Division before suffering relegation. They again won the Third Division North title in 1935–36, and after World War II recorded their best ever league finish of fourth in the Second Division in 1946–47. However they were relegated again in 1950–51, and were relegated out of the Third Division in 1960–61. Chesterfield won the Fourth Division in 1969–70, and then won the Anglo-Scottish Cup in 1980. After relegation in 1982–83, they again won the Fourth Division title in 1984–85, though would again be relegated after five seasons in the third tier. They secured their return to the third tier with a 2–0 win over Bury in the 1995 play-off Final at Wembley.
Chesterfield reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 1997, but were relegated back to the basement division in 1999–2000. They made an immediate return to the third tier after securing a Third Division automatic promotion place in 2000–01. Relegated in 2006–07, they secured the League Two title in 2010–11, but were relegated from League One the following season. In 2011, Dave Allen took full ownership of the club and oversaw progress to two League Trophy finals; Chesterfield won the trophy with a 2–0 victory over Swindon Town in 2012, and finished as runners-up after losing 3–1 to Peterborough United in 2014. Chesterfield were crowned champions of League Two for a record fourth time in 2013–14, but remained in League One for just three seasons. Two consecutive relegations saw the club relegated out of the English Football League at the end of the 2017–18 season.

MANAGER
JAMES ROWE After being released by Charlton Athletic at the age of 18, Rowe joined Ilkeston Town and then Histon, where he scored 30 goals as an 18-year-old before a serious knee injury interrupted his progress. Spells at Heybridge Swifts, Stamford, Grantham Town and Rugby Town followed before he returned to Histon. He then had stints at Needham Market, AFC Sudbury, Leiston and Canvey Island. In 2010, Rowe began working for Birmingham City in a part-time academy coaching role, which allowed him to continue to play and he joined Leamington. In 2013, following a gap in his playing career due to his coaching commitments, he rejoined former club Canvey Island.
After a spell as West Ham’s assistant academy manager, he attended the Johan Cruyff Institute in Amsterdam, where he earned a master’s degree in coaching. In the summer of 2016, Rowe was appointed assistant manager of Aldershot Town, helping manager Gary Waddock guide the Shots to two successive play-off positions. He was appointed manager of Gloucester City in November 2019 and led them to the top of the National League North table before being named manager of Chesterfield 12 months later. Rowe steered the Spireites to the play-offs at the end of the 2020/21 season.

BARNET FC Supporters association Barnet FC Supporters’ Association Page As many of you may know, I was born and brought up in Leeds, so my love for Barnet may seem a bit of a strange one. However, my Dad is originally from Barnet so he’s essentially to blame! My parents started me early and my first game was a trip to Blackpool when I was 16 months old (we lost 3-2). We went to Underhill when we were visiting family in London and always enjoyed the walk down Barnet High Street and getting a winners (or losers) milkshake on the way back up the hill. What really stands out in my memory from supporting the club whilst I was younger are all the northern away days we could easily travel to. I’ve had many trips to Bradford City, Rochdale and Morecambe. A proper northern away day is still my favourite kind to this day! My first ever Barnet hero was Lee Harrison and I remember once getting a programme signed by him and being completely starstruck! When I was a teenager, Mark Byrne became my favourite player and my demands to my parents were clear. I wanted to go to as many Barnet games as possible including home games, despite it being a 400-mile round trip! What enticed me about Barnet is the ‘family’ element of the club. I have met so many amazing friends through being a Barnet fan and have shared some great trips with them along the way. On top of this, the way you get to know the players on a personal level is special and I could list so many explayers who are still part of the Barnet family. Therefore, joining the Executive Committee of the BFCSA was an easy choice for me. I think it’s clear we need to rebuild a close
relationship between the club and the fans and as someone who was hooked because of this relationship, I will push to help build this back up. I have enjoyed working with the other members of the Executive Committee as it has allowed me to meet new Barnet fans, and due to our different experiences, we all bring a different perspective to the conversation. The Club have also been great and really committed to working with us in order to get consistent communication between the Club and fans. In 2022, I really hope we can continue to make progress on and off the pitch. As time goes on, I hope new fans can become hooked the same way I was and we can all have high aspirations for the future! Carla Devine.
ASHFORD TOWN (MIDDLESEX) AWAY POSTCARD After a win against Hayes & Yeading in the previous round, we had a Middlesex FA Senior Challenge Cup trip to Ashford Town (Middlesex) on Tuesday evening. Despite it being a local cup, it is a difficult stadium to get to because of how close it is to Heathrow Airport. Thankfully, there were a few of us travelling together which made the journey easier. Chris, Cranners, Henry and I left King’s Cross around 16:30 and travelled to Hatton Cross. There’s a pub near the station where we had a few drinks before the game and got a taxi to the ground, arriving just after 19:00. This gave us time for a drink in the Club House before kick-off and a chance to catch up with other fans that had made the journey. The stadium was quite small, but a group of us found a decent place to stand behind the goal for the first half and the game kicked off. The game had quite a lively start with both teams having chances and both goalkeeper’s having to make saves. In the 25th minute, Jake Askew made a brilliant save to keep out a good shot from the opposition. Moments later they had another attempt that went just over the crossbar. However, towards the end of the half it was us who had the chances, but neither team could find the opener and we went into half-time at 0-0. At the break, I had a lovely hot chocolate and we switched ends to stand in what was quite a nice little terrace for the second half. About 15 minutes into the half the deadlock was broken with Sam Woods putting us ahead after getting on the end of Josh Payne’s corner. Ashford pushed hard for an equaliser and were rewarded for their efforts in the 86th minute when McLeish-White found the net. At this point I thought we were going to penalties, but just two minutes later, Daniel Powell regained our lead with a calm finish after beating several defenders. The referee blew the whistle soon after, meaning we were through to the semi-finals, without having to endure a penalty shootout! We got a taxi back to Hatton Cross for the same lengthy tube journey back into London, but it felt a bit shorter on the way back! We got off at our various stations and I was back home by 23:30. Ashford Town was a nice evening out and I’m happy to be into the semi-finals. Here’s hoping for a good tie!

chesterfield The Bees have met Chesterfield on 26 occasions, playing the Spirieites first in November 1991 following the Bees’ promotion to the Football League. Of those 26 games, 20 have been in the fourth tier of the Football League and six in the Vanarama National League. The sides did not meet at Chesterfield in 2019/20, due to the curtailment of the season due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Chesterfield (in 2013 and May 2018). Michael Nelson played once for each team in this fixture. Scott Loach has played twice for Barnet and once for Chesterfield. Jerome Binnom-Williams turned out for Barnet against the Spireites twice last season and had previously played three times for Chesterfield (as well as once for FC Halifax Town) against the Bees. Curtis Weston and Scott Loach are both still with the Spireites.
Barnet have come out as winners on nine occasions, there have been four draws and Chesterfield have won 13 times. At home, Barnet have been victors four times, the Spireites six times and there have been three draws. The sides have met at The Hive London four times. Chesterfield have had the upper hand in recent seasons, with Barnet achieving one draw in the past five meetings, home and away. Barnet were the first team to visit Chesterfield’s new stadium in a competitive match in August 2010, following the Spireites move from their old stadium Saltergate. John Akinde, Gary Bull, Sam Deering, Dougie Freeman, Paul Furlong and Jack Taylor have all scored twice against the Spireites. Joe Devera has played for the Bees against Chesterfield most often (eight times), while Lee Harrison, Ephron Mason-Clark Harry Taylor have appeared for the Bees on six occasions. The most recent meeting between the sides was at Chesterfield in September 2021. The Spireites opened up a two-goal lead, but the Bees hit back to go in level at the break, thanks to goals from Serhat Tasdemir and Adam Marriott. However, Kabongo Tshimanga completed his hat-trick (with a second penalty) in the second half and Gavin Gunning added another to see the home side win 4-2. Barnet’s team for that game was: Sam Sargeant, David Sesay, Ben Richards-Everton, Harry Taylor, Joe Widdowson, Mitch Brundle, Kian Flanagan (Jordan Thomas), Sam Granville, Serhat Tasdemir (Sam Beard), Mason Bloomfield, Adam Marriott (Ephron Mason-Clark). The attendance was 4,538. Martin Allen has managed both teams, mostly recently Chesterfield from May to December 2018. Michael Nelson and Curtis Weston followed Martin Allen from Barnet to Chesterfield, and they have played for both teams in this fixture. Finally, Alex Nicholls collected a pass in midfield, moved a few yards forward and let fly from more than 25-yards out, finding the top corner of the net. CURRENTLY As noted in the last programme, the Bees have not conceded more than a single goal in their past seven away games, a run not bettered since they went 10 away games without conceding more than one goal between 21 December 2019 and 18 July 2020. After last week’s 1-1 draw with Altrincham, Barnet have now gone nine league games, home and away, without letting in more than one goal. That equals their performance between 14 December 2019 and 22 February 2020. Barnet have lost just three times in 14 league games under Dean Brennan, picking up 25 points. They are undefeated at home in the league since 23 October 2021. The Bees have gained 11 points from their latest six league games at home, while the Spireites have gained the same number in their last half dozen matches away. Chesterfield have lost only once in the league all season, which was on 28 September 2021 away to Woking. The Spireites’ Kabongo Tshimanga is the Vanarama National League’s top scorer with 18 (19 in all competitions). Compiled by “59 Years A Bee”

WHAT’S THE Buzz
WHAT’S THE Buzz
The FA have this week fined Shrewsbury Town and Accrington Stanley for a fight between players of the two Clubs. The two sides met at the New Meadow on Wednesday 29th December and played out a 0-0 draw. The incident occurred when Ross Sykes of Accrington put in a late challenge on Dan Udoh of Shrewsbury and was subsequently booked. Both Clubs accepted the charge of failing to ensure that their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion, with the Shrews now set to pay a £3,750 fine, and Stanley £3,375.
Oldham Athletic owner Abdallah Lemsagam has said that he been sent many threats in the post. With supporters of the Club having staged many protests over recent years about his ownership, Lemsagam has said that he is willing to sell the Club and is reported to be in talks with “credible owners”. He has said that several handwritten threatening letters were sent to the Club’s ground, one also containing bullets. This comes as Oldham sit bottom in the Football League, with just four wins and six draws from their opening 24 matches. With over half their league fixtures having now been played, the side are four points from safety, with several clubs marginally above them having played fewer fixtures.
Chester FC have been in disagreement with the government in recent weeks, when it was revealed that the club may have inadvertently broken Covid-19 restrictions. The Club’s ground, The Deva Stadium, is famous for being probably the only stadium in the world of sport to be directly on a border, with the main entrance and club offices being on the English side, whilst the actual pitch and terraces being on the Welsh side. This caused an issue as there are different rules surrounding Covid-19 in England and Wales, with fewer attendees being allowed in Wales. The stadium hosted several fixtures over the festive period, despite the Welsh government stating that the Club should be subject to their rules rather than the English ones. The Welsh rules effectively ban fans from matches. The Club are looking at alternative venues for upcoming fixtures until the situation is resolved, including reversing fixtures to play them away instead of at home.
WHAT’S THE Buzz
Last Tuesday evening saw a group of supporters walk to a match in awareness of mental health. They did the walk to raise awareness of issues surrounding it and to support the charity, Mind. This came after the National League fixture between Southend United and Yeovil Town was designated as the “Match for Mind”. Southend won the fixture 2-1, with Yeovil getting the consolation goal in the 90th minute. The supporters walked 22 miles/35 kilometres from the County Cricket Ground at Chelmsford to Roots Hall, the home of Southend United to deliver the matchball.
Weymouth have announced that they have parted company with manager Brian Stock. This comes with the side having won just four of their opening 21 National League fixtures, which sees them lie in 21st place (out of 23 teams). This leaves them with just 15 points, four more than 22nd place King’s Lynn Town, and 23 more than Dover Athletic, who have a points deduction. The side are currently in the top relegation spot, and are four points off their nearest opponents, Maidenhead United, who have played one match fewer. Stock has three caps for Wales at international level, as well as more youth caps, and had previously played as high as the Championship with Preston North End, Doncaster Rovers and Burnley. He is replaced at the Terras by Paul Maitland, who has been placed in interim charge of the Club until a permanent replacement is found.
This weekend sees the Fourth Round proper of the Buildbase FA Trophy take place. There is a local derby between two of our nearby clubs – St Albans City vs Cheshunt. The two lowest ranked sides in the competition, step four sides Larkhall Athletic and Plymouth Parkway, have both been handed away ties, at Stockport County and Spennymoor Town respectively. There are three all National League ties, notably Aldershot Town vs Bromley, Notts County vs Eastleigh, and Dagenham & Redbridge vs Southend United. Elsewhere, FC Halifax Town face an away trip to Alfreton Town, Wrexham host Folkestone Invicta, York City play Slough Town, Guiseley travel to Stourbridge, King’s Lynn Town are at Tonbridge Angels, Solihull Moors are on the road at Southport and Dartford host Weymouth. There is also Morpeth vs Boston United and Yeovil Town vs Needham Market, with Maidstone United also being in the draw.

MATCH Report
MATCH Report THE BEES LEFT IT LATE TO EARN A POINT AGAINST ALTRINCHAM IN THE VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE – DRAWING 1-1 AT THE HIVE LONDON. The hosts enjoyed the first attempt at goal which came following some pressure from the visitors. Adam Marriott brought down a long ball forward before he laid it off to Rob Hall on the right side who cut into the penalty area and had his low effort saved by Tony Thompson. Dean Brennan’s side went close again in the 19th minute when they were awarded a free-kick in Altrincham’s half. Rob Hall bent the set-piece into the penalty area to Mitch Brundle who sent his header into the goalie’s gloves. The Robins’ first chance of the afternoon arrived in the 23rd minute as a corner was sent towards the back post. Toby Mullarkey got on the end of it and shot goalwards to force the Bees defence to throw bodies in front of the strike and eventually clear their lines. Oxborough was called into action as the first-half came to a close when Dan Mooney picked up the ball and found space inside the box. The Robins’ No. 7 rifled it towards the bottom corner, with only a diving save from the Bees’ stopper preventing Phil Parkinson’s side from finding the opener. Altrincham looked to score their first of the match in the 51st minute after Josh Hancock dibbled along the edge of the box before firing just over the crossbar. The Bees responded quickly and almost broke the deadlock when substitute Wes Fonguck delivered an in-swinging corner towards the front post. Adam Marriott rose highest and flicked his header goalwards to make Thompson pull off a reaction save and tip it over the crossbar. The deadlock was broken just after the hour mark when
Thompson’s long ball forward was brought down by Hulme towards the byline. He held the ball up before passing to Ben Pringle on the edge of the box who curled it into the far corner to give his side the lead. Jamie Turley went close to bringing the Bees level in the 79th minute when he got on the end of Fonguck’s corner. The Captain nodded the ball up and across goal towards Mason Bloomfield who failed to get the finishing touch. Dean Brennan’s side levelled deep into stoppage time after Harry Taylor crossed into the centre of the box following a long pass forward by Oxborough. Marriott took the ball under control before laying it off to Mitch Brundle who hit a first-time half volley into the bottom corner to rescue a point for the Bees.
