WRITES

Darren Currie

First of all, I would like to welcome Jim Bentley, his players, staff and all the AFC Fylde supporters to today’s match. Jim has done well since taking over up there and is a top manager. He had such a brilliant spell at Morecambe and I am sure this evening’s match will be very tough. The result up at Mill Farm was superb and was a brilliant evening for everyone concerned with our football club. We were really clinical that night and it was a really good performance, however it means nothing coming into today’s game. They have a new manager, with a new style, so we will have to be at our best to get the points. We’re prepared and we’re ready to go out and give it our all. I was absolutely delighted with our result the last time we were here at The Hive. To score five goals in front of our supporters is always pleasing and it was key that we got back to winning ways. I just wanted to extend thanks to those who were there on the night, I felt there was a really positive atmosphere inside the stadium. The mood in the camp on the back of that result has been really good, there has been a great spirit about us. That obviously comes with winning football matches, so long may that continue! We find ourselves going into a busy run of fixtures between the league and the FA Trophy, so there is plenty to play for. We’re

5

BARNETFC.COM

not in the position in the table that we would like but this league is tight, so a couple more positive result will see us move towards where we want to be. We have to take that Ebbsfleet result as a turning point and really look to kick on now. Your support in this next run of fixtures, as always will be crucial. So get behind us this evening and hopefully we can reward you with a good result.

Last time out was a start, but there is plenty of work to do heading into 2020 so let’s all stick together. Thank as always for your support,

#LetsBeeTogether

Darren

AFC FYLDE

OPPOSITION

History The club was formed by the amalgamation of Kirkham Town FC and Wesham FC in 1988. By taking this name, the club was adopting the name of a previous club which had played in the West Lancashire League in the years immediately before the First World War. Kirkham & Wesham played their first season in the West Lancashire League in 1988–89, taking the place previously held by Kirkham Town in Division One. The following season they finished bottom of this division and were relegated to Division Two. After three seasons in Division Two they were promoted in the 1992–93 season, only to again suffer relegation in 1994–95. They were immediately promoted again, finishing as runners-up and only losing two games all season in 1995–96. The West Lancashire League was restructured with the First Division being renamed as the Premier Division in the 1998–99 season. After finishing fourth 14

in successive season in the 1997–98 and 1998–99 seasons, the club then dominated the Premier Division for a number of years. They were Champions in seven out of eight seasons between the 1999–2000 and 2006–07 seasons, finishing as runners-up in the one season they failed to win the league, 2002–03. Between January 2003 and October 2004, the club did not lose one match in any competition, a record that spanned 21 months. The run finally ended when they lost a league match, 1–0 to Dalton United In April 2006 the club completed a hat-trick of consecutive victories in the Lancashire Amateur Shield cup final when they beat fellow West Lancashire League side Charnock Richard 2–0 at the Lancashire FA ground in Leyland. It was the clubs fourth time winning the Shield in six years. As the nominated representatives of the Lancashire County Football Association (Lancashire FA), the club have been winners of the Northern Counties Cup in 2004–05, 2005–06, and 2006–07.

THE HISTORY

& Wesham scored twice in the last six minutes, both goals coming from seventeen-year-old substitute Matt Walwyn, son of former Blackpool player, Keith Walwyn, who only played the last 11 minutes of the game. They were promoted to the Premier Division after finishing second in Division Two.

FOR THE START OF THE 2008–09 SEASON, THE CLUB CHANGED THEIR NAME FROM KIRKHAM & WESHAM TO A.F.C. FYLDE

2010/11 Long serving manager Mick Fuller was moved upstairs in September 2010 and Kelham O’Hanlon was brought in as first team coach. The club finished in mid-table with a high turnover of playing staff and the side at the end of their first season in the Northern Premier League Division One North was barely recognisable compared with the one that started the campaign. The following season the club achieved a play-off place. In the semi-final Matt Walwyn scored in a 1–0 win over Skelmersdale United but the team lost 2–1 to Chorley in the final.

Following their West Lancashire League championship success in 2006–07, the club were accepted into the North West Counties League for the 2007–08 season. The club’s first match in the North West Counties League was a home match on 11 August 2007, against Darwen in front of 101 fans, which they won 5–0. The following Tuesday they played their first ever home match under floodlights winning 2–0 at home to Holker Old boys.

2011/12

Manager Mick Fuller won the leagues manager of the month award for December 2007 following four successive wins during the month. On 26 January 2008 the club reached the last sixteen of the FA Vase, in their first season in the competition, when they beat Studley 3–0. On 9 February they reached the Quarter-finals of the FA Vase after they beat Sussex County league leaders, Crowborough Athletic 2–0 in front of a record crowd of 772 at Crowborough’s Alderbrook Recreation Ground. On 11 February they were drawn at home in the Quarter Final to Midland Football Alliance club, Coventry Sphinx on 1 March. The match ended in a 3–3 draw after extra time and Kirkham & Wesham won the replay 1–0 on 9 March in Coventry with a goal from Sean Paterson. In the two-legged semi-final against Eastern Counties League Premier Division club, Needham Market the team won 4–2 on aggregate.

In the 2011–12 season they were installed as early promotion favourites but Kelham O’Hanlon was replaced as manager in November 2011 after a poor run of results and was quickly replaced by a new management team of Dave Challinor and Colin Woodthorpe. Challinor left Conference North side Colwyn Bay to drop two divisions to join the Coasters, pointing to the club’s ambition and plans for the future as the factor that made them move to the Fylde Coast. They were 16 points off the top of the table when they came to the club but claimed the title with a 1–0 win over Salford City. Challinor won several awards including Manager of the Year at the NPL Awards Dinner.

On 24 April, the club won the Division Two knockout trophy with a 1–0 win over Bootle, and two days later secured one of the two automatic promotion places in North West Counties Division One when they beat Castleton Gabriels 3–1.

In 2012–13, the club managed to achieve a playoff position in their maiden season in the Northern Premier League Premier Division. They lost out 3–1 on penalties to eventual playoff final winners Hednesford Town F.C. in the semi-final, which ended 3–3 after extra time at Keys Park, Hednesford. The game was notable for a 60-yard goal scored from a free-kick by Coasters goalkeeper Ben Hinchcliffe.

2012/13

On 11 May, they won the FA Vase beating Lowestoft Town 2–1 in the final at Wembley Stadium in front of a total crowd of 19,537, with about 14,000 from Lowestoft and about 3,500 Kirkham & Wesham supporters. A goal down for most of the game, Kirkham

2015/16

The 2013–14 season was extremely successful for Fylde, as they won the Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy, the Northern Premier League Challenge Cup, and gained promotion to the Conference North via the playoffs.

Long-serving players Joe Booth and Michael Barnes moved on before pre-season started along with Michael Potts, Luke Denson and Dave Hankin also leaving the club. The signings of centre-half Dominic Collins from Southport and striker Matty Hughes from Fleetwood show serious intentions for the club in the upcoming season as both players had played in higher divisions than the Conference North the previous season.

They beat Chorley F.C. 4–1 at the Reebok Stadium, Bolton to win the Lancs FA Trophy, Skelmersdale United 1–0 at Edgeley Park, Stockport to win the NPL Challenge Cup, Worksop Town 3–1 at home in the playoff semi-final, and then required penalties to beat Ashton United at home in the playoff final, with the game finishing 1–1 after extra time. Goalkeeper Ben Hinchcliffe scored the deciding penalty to end a tense game and send the Coasters up to the Conference North

Fylde enjoyed a successful campaign, once again reaching the FA Cup first round and putting in a fine display in a narrow 3-1 defeat at League One giants Millwall, before ultimately losing in the play-off final against North Ferriby United. The Coasters also reached the last 16 of the FA Trophy.

2014/15

2016-17

The Coasters signed Tom Hannigan, Liam Tomsett & Danny Rowe in preparation for their first season in the Conference North and defender Josh Langley stayed on at the club after joining late the previous season.

In 2016/17 AFC Fylde moved into their new ground at Mill Farm as well as establishing a Ladies Team throughout the season they scored an incredible 109 goals and secured 88 points which was more than enough to win the National League North title and promotion to the National League for the first time in the clubs history. The clubs striker Danny Rowe created history scoring a record 47 league goals.

AFC Fylde finished their first season in the Conference North in second place with 85 points, losing to Guiseley in the subsequent play-off semi-final. Their top scorer was Danny Rowe with 31 goals, with Richie Allen and Danny Lloyd both scoring at least 20 goals in all competitions. Josh Langley won both Player’s Player of the Year award and Supporters Player of the Year award, while Dion Charles took Young Achiever of the Year award.

2017-18 The Coasters first season in the fifth tier of Englis football brought unprecedented success with Dave Challinors side qualifying for the second round of the FA Cup. The opponents were Wigan Atheltic, the first leg ended 1-1 at Mill Farm before losing the televised replay 3-2. Success followed in the league as AFC Fylde finished the season in 7th, their highest ever league position. They qualified for the expanded playoffs, however, they were beaten 2–1 by Boreham Wood in the qualifying round.

Tom Hannigan took Manager’s Player of the Year in what was widely regarded as a successful season for the club, having only been promoted to this division the previous season. Three AFC Fylde players were selected in the Conference North Team of the Season at end of season AGM awards. Ben Hinchcliffe, Josh Langley and Brad Barnes were all picked by the fellow clubs within the league.

Goalkeeper James Montgomery signed for the Coasters from Forest Green Rovers, who he joined in summer 2018.

SCOTT DUXBURY

JAMES MONTGOMERY

AFC FYLDE TEAM He made 25 appearances for Forest Green Rovers in all competitions last year, a number which would have been more if not for a freak injury that kept him sidelined. The nature of the injury saw Montgomery make national news, as he lost several of his teeth in a collision with a Mansfield forward. The former Gateshead stopper signed for the Coasters until 2021, with the club holding the option of a further year.

A left-back who likes to get forward, Duxbury joined the Coasters in the summer from Stockport County, where he spent four years and amassed over 200 appearances. ‘Dux’ was part of Stockport’s title-winning side from the National League North last season, as well as featuring in both legs of the FA Trophy semi-final against Fylde. “He’s a young player with good experience, and comes from a team used to playing a club with plenty of expectation – so he can deal with that side of it,” said Dave Challinor.

Croasdale represented England C on multiple occasions whilst eligible, doing enough to earn the armband under Manager Paul Fairclough. His move to AFC Fylde in 2018 still stands as Fylde’s transfer record, as the midfield general joined for a reported £50,000.

Blackpool born and raised, the forward joined the Coasters following a 19-goal-haul in the Vanarama National League North for FC United of Manchester last season. Willoughby has plied his trade across the Fylde coast and beyond, with Fleetwood Town as a youth player, before AFC Blackpool and Clitheroe after this. Despite their relegation, his time at FC United was a productive one, finishing as top goalscorer, winning Players’ Player of the Year, and earning a first England C cap. Willoughby marked his England C debut with a goal, netting a powerful free-kick just after half-time, in a 2-2 draw against Wales C.

AFC FYLDE CONFIRMED THE APPOINTMENT OF JIM BENTLEY AS THE CLUB’S NEW MANAGER ON OCTOBER 28TH 2019. Jim Bentley joined the Coasters after a 17 year affinity with Morecambe FC, first as a player, and then as a manager, where he took up the reins back in May 2011. Bentley joined Morecambe as a player in 2002, making over 300 appearances for the Shrimps, leading them to promotion to League Two as captain. Following his playing career, Bentley stepped up as Manager for the Shrimps – a job that would see him become the longest-serving manager in the top four English leagues, serving eight years and five months in the post. Despite always being “the favourites to go down”, Bentley defied the odds season after season to keep The Shrimps in the Football League. Bentley is joined at Mill Farm by his long-term assistant Ken McKenna, and Goalkeeping Coach Lee Jones, all signing contracts that run until the end of the 2021/22 season.

AFC Fylde stormed to the Northern Premier League First Division (North) title in 2011/12. Ex-Republic of Ireland international goalkeeper Kelham O’Hanlon was dismissed as manager in November 2011 after a poor run of results and replaced by Dave Challinor. The Coasters were 16 points off the top when he arrived at the club but quickly surged up the table. They trounced Harrogate Railway Athletic 7-0, Clitheroe 6-2 and Ossett Town 5-0, clinching the title with a 1–0 win over Salford City at Kellamergh Park. AFC Fylde won 31 of their 42 Northern Premier League games and gained 99 points, finishing seven ahead of runnersup Curzon Ashton.

AFC Fylde won the Conference North title in 2016/17. Dave Challinor’s side won 11 times in a 15 match unbeaten start. The run ended with a 1-0 defeat at Tamworth but they bounced back with a 5-0 victory over Stalybridge, then hammered Boston United 9-2. The Coasters’ solitary home defeat was 2-0 against Chorley watched by a record 3,858 crowd on Boxing Day. They crashed to a 5-0 defeat at Salford in early February but lost just one of their final 14 games, with Danny Rowe breaking the club goalscoring record with his winner at Halifax. AFC Fylde scored 109 goals as they gained 88 points, finishing six ahead of runners-up Kidderminster.

Matt Blinkhorn was top scorer with 17 goals as they qualified for the Northern Premier League Premier Division play-offs in fifth place. AFC Fylde beat Worksop 3-1 in the semi-finals, then Ashton 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the final. They also won the League Cup and Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy.

AFC Fylde won the FA Trophy and were Conference National play-off finalists in 2018/19. Dave Challinor’s side lost just one of their opening 18 Conference games including a 6-0 victory at Maidenhead United. The Coasters also slammed six goals past Havant & Waterlooville and Danny Rowe was top scorer with 27 goals as they qualified for the play-offs in fifth place. They beat Harrogate and Solihull Moors but lost 3-0 to Salford City in the Wembley final. AFC Fylde defeated Stratford, Biggleswade, Ramsbottom, Barnet and Stockport County en route to the FA Trophy final, with Rowe scoring to clinch a 1-0 win over Leyton Orient at Wembley.

WALKING FOOTBALL TEAM

WALKING FOOTBALL TEAM MIDDLESEX FA LEAGUE TREBLE FOR BARNET WFT The Bees completed the 2019 Middlesex FA Central League season by adding another over 60’s FA trophy to the collection. In addition to being the over 60’s Spring League Champions, we also became the over 60’s Autumn League Runners-Up. Steve Chittenden captained the successful over 60’s who beat Staines 2-0 and Cedars 3-1 on their way to the trophy. Our over 50’s picked up too many injuries to be able to challenge and emulate their Spring League Runners-Up trophy, finishing the Autumn League in 4th place, but ended on a high with a 3-1 victory and a Daryn Lenz hat-trick versus Middlesex Blues. We congratulate goalkeeper Nick Kreiger who was awarded with the Players Player of the Year award after winning us many matches with his amazing saves including a penalty save versus Wigan in a 1-0 victory in the UK National Finals. Tom Moran also received a medal of recognition for representing us superbly in the England WF team. MATCH REPORT

THE BEES PUT IN A FIVE STAR PERFORMANCE AS THEY SWEPT ASIDE EBBSFLEET UNITED WITH A RUTHLESS PERFORMANCE AT THE HIVE LONDON. A HAT TRICK FOR SIMEON AKINOLA AND GOALS FROM JOSH WALKER AND JACK TAYLOR MEANT THE BEES RETURNED TO WINNING WAYS.

HOW IT HAPPENED The Bees came flying out of the blocks and dominated the early possession with Fonguck having the first effort on goal of the game, a chance that just sailed over the bar. The Fleet’s first dangerous opportunity came through Alex Reid who was baring down on goal before a fantastic tackle from James Dunne took the ball away from the forward. Reid was in again shortly after but fired wide thanks to the pressure of Callum Reynolds. The opening quarter of the game was an open affair that the Bees dominated large spells of. After numerous dangerous opportunities from the Bees, the opener finally came after 27 minutes. Jack Taylor audaciously

EBBSFLEET UNITED

shot from 30-yards, and his effort flew in via the underside of the bar, a certain contender for goal of the season. Barnet’s lead did not last long when in the 36th minute, against the run of play, Stephen Obileye twisted and turned through the Bee’s defence and slotted the ball past Scott Loach to level the game at 1-1. But the Bees were only on level terms for six minutes as a great team move, was delightfully finished by Simeon Akinola who put his side back in front. It was Akinola’s first goal since the win at AFC Fylde and his goal was richly deserved. Into the second-half, Fonguck once again had the best chance of the opening proceedings with a low cross that just evaded Akinola who was rushing into the six-yard box.

Despite the early second-half domination, the Fleet levelled once again as Ugwu touched home from six yards out. Just moments later, Akinola was played through on goal and he once again delivered as he slotted the ball into the back of the net. The Bees number 14 showing no sign of nerves as he raced through one-on-one with Palmer. It was soon four goals for Currie’s side and what a goal it was! Josh Walker skipped through five Ebbsfleet defenders before having the skill and composure to poke the ball into the corner. It was a goal that the young forward deserved after his tireless efforts. With 19 minutes to play Akinola completed his hat-trick from the spot after Fonguck’s effort was handled in the area. In trademark fashion, the striker stepped up and calmly put his spot-kick away to complete a richly deserved hat-trick. Kevin Watson’s side had the ball in the back of the net shortly after but the referee waved it away for deliberate handball. Currie made his first substitution of the half starting in the 83rd minute, a good testament to the individual performances of his side. As the game began to settle late into the second half, David Tutonda found himself in space on the left-hand side but his cross was unable to find anyone in front of the goal and shortly after, the referee blew his whistle to end what was a fantastic game for the Bees.

Barnet FC team: Loach, Johnson, Reynolds, Dunne, J. Taylor, Akinola (Vasiliou 92’), H. Taylor, Fonguck (Vilhete 83’), Walker (Adams 84’), Tutonda, Sweeney. Unused subs: Matrevics, Boucaud 36

WHAT’S THE BUZZ

Alex Jones Digresses Follow Fylde Some time ago, I set myself the additional task of writing about each new team that visited firstly Underhill and now the Hive. Already I resigned myself that the visit of Fylde would be problematic.1988 saw the amalgamation of Kirkham Town and Wesham, the new club adopting a name used prior to the First World War. Barnet have never played any of these sides before today, so let us first consider that Sesame Street is brought to you by the letter K.

Special K Kettering, Kidderminster, Kings Lynn. Three of the four sides beginning with the letter K which Barnet have played over the years. Kettering have had more than their fair share of problems since I visited Rockingham Road, initially as a neutral, then with Barnet. Steve Percy is probably screaming “what about Kingsbury Town” at this stage, and indeed 1992 saw the Bees travel to that side in the London Senior Cup. We won 4-1, although I did not make the journey. Saw Town play a couple of times, before they merged with the London Tigers, and attended a couple of functions at the bar. The complicated history of teams in the area means the ground is now shared by the phoenix club Edgware Town, and the formally nomadic Hendon. Silver Jubilee Park now boasts a 3G surface, making the ground share that much easier. Also the temple, when it is lit up, makes a spectacular backdrop to evening games.

Trawling the net One amusing, if slightly waspish contribution to the internet when I researched today’s opponents was “inbedwithmaradona”, where the writer observed inebriated fans of Boston attempting to taunt Fylde with the chant “You’re just a pub team with money”. Presumably the sixties hit Guntanamera

was revived, but Boston, chasing the playoffs from National League North , are awaiting progess on a new ground, whilst Fylde fly. The three events did not occur simultaneously. Mart was at a midweek

North London Roundabout

After one of the best performances of the season against Ebbsfleet, which certainly contained two early contenders for goals of the season, there followed a free Saturday, as Solihull was otherwise engaged. Time for Barnet fans to consider the managerial switches at the North London giants of Tottenham, the arsenal, and …Hendon FC.

Set fire to the Lane My old friend Alison, whose middle child I taught, and eldest, Charli played for London Bees when they were known as London Bees, has certain set views on Spurs, as she hails from a fire of Gooners, so I invented this gag when she mentioned Adele recently. So instead, we turn to the thoughts of Mr Howie Killick, who is landlord of my nearest pub, Café Chameleon. Howie opines “Mourinho wouldn’t have been my first choice, or even my tenth choice, but he has won more than Tottenham have in their history”.

Good old Arsenal Not content with events at their rivals, the Arsenal entered the fray by sacking Unai Emery. I mention Hendon for a reason. Gary McCann is the longest serving memory in the history of the Greens, nearly eleven years, which is nearly unprecedented by today’s standards. Now he is at Hampton and Richmond Borough, but it is a wonder that Gary Mac’s s voice doesn’t resonate 37

BARNETFC.COM

all the way from Surrey. A larger than life character, and a super guy, who I’ve chatted to on several occasions, as befitting his profession, he has the Knowledge. Gary Mac defined and shaped Hendon, despite difficult circumstances with their nomadic status for well over a decade, as he was their goalkeeper in his youth. Arsene never played for the Arsenal, but the same phrases apply. Monsieur Wenger is not only their most successful boss, but he revolutionised the club. So following the great man, however diminishing his powers in later years, was never going to be easy. In any case, both Tottenham and the Arsenal were in European finals just over six months ago. How fickle fate…. And London football fans can be….

Team of the decade Recently the Only Barnet site had a thread with this very purpose. The first side read… David Stephens in goal, a back four of Yiadom, J Stephens, Santos and Johnson, midfield Holmes, Togwell Jack Taylor and Luisma with an attacking duo of John Akinde and Izale McLeod. Obviously these men would have played under a number of different managers, and not all in the Football League. I chose not to comment at the time, and there are no wrong answers, but just one observation, that although Edgar Davids was in the twilight of his career, where he possibly played himself too often and not necessarily always to optimum effect, we saw touches of one of the greatest footballers to grace Dutch football, never mind Underhill.

QUIZ Soon I will include an annual quiz of the year, but a quick one, is which of the 92 clubs has the longest running manager at present. The answer, possibly surprisingly, is Gareth Ainsworth at Wycombe. This does not account of the short time Eddie Howe spent away from Bournemouth, and I should have mentioned, when given the poser a few weekend ago, that Gareth was the first away boss to lead a team out at Underhill. Miss Emma Stent, a local lass, and enthusiastic Loftus Road season ticket holder, since before I taught her dryly refers to Wycombe as the QPR B side, but they are certainly enjoying a good season at present, just the one defeat, and five points ahead of Ipswich.

A statement on the clubs’ website reveals that the directors, officials and the players of Wrexham have publicly apologised to their fans upon reaching their worst ever league position last week. The side lost 2-1 away at fellow struggler’s Ebbsfleet United to go bottom of the league, five points off of safety. They have been in the National League since relegation from League 2 back in 2008, having been in the third tier in 2005. They were also last in the second tier in 1982, and have played in the European Cup Winners’ Cup through their exploits in the Welsh Cup, once reaching the quarter final, as well as beating giants FC Porto. “As lifelong fans of the club ourselves who follow the team up and down the country, we really understand the frustration, embarrassment and upset this is causing everyone and that we need to urgently address the situation”, the statement read. The side won 2-0 at Eastleigh on Tuesday to take them back up to 21st.

Oldham Athletic have signed former Premier League midfielder David Jones on a short term deal. Jones came through the academy at Manchester United, but did not make a first team appearance. After loans at Preston North End and NEC Nijmegen, he transferred to Derby County, where he helped them gain promotion to the top flight, including making a few appearances. He then moved to Wolverhampton Wanderers, helping them gain promotion to the Premier League, before spending time at Wigan Athletic, Blackburn Rovers, Burnley and Sheffield Wednesday, across the top two tiers. Dino Maamria, the Oldham manager, said: “He’s coming to Oldham to make a real impact and help the team climb up the table”. The Latics currently sit in 20th place in League 2, five points off of the relegation zone.

Gabriele Cioffi has left League 2 side Crawley Town by mutual consent, after having spent 14 months as manager. The Italian has been in charge of the Red Devils since September 2019, when former manager Harry Kewell left the club to take the helm at Notts County. He leaves the Broadfield Stadium having won just once in the clubs past 11 league games, leaving the side in 17th place. Cioffi’s assistant, Edu Rubio, has been appointed as interim head coach. “The club would like to thank Gabriele for his services to Crawley Town and we wish him all the best for the future” said a club statement. The spell was only his second in management, with his only previous experience being with Italian lower league side U.S. Gavorrano for several months back in 2013.

Former England youth team manager Neil Dewsnip has been appointed Director of Football at League 2 side Plymouth Argyle. Dewsnip started his coaching career in 1996, where he coached the academy sides at Everton, before leaving in 2013, to work for the FA. He would then manage England’s’ Under 17s, 18s and 20s, taking them to the Under 17 World Cup in 2015 and the U20s Toulon Tournament in 2017. He initially joined Argyle over the summer as a technical consultant for manager Ryan Lowe, but he has now been promoted to his new role. “I am really excited to start as director of football”, he said. “I have been lucky enough to have enjoyed success previously with the English FA, and I will be working hard to ensure that this pattern of success continues at Home Park”.

With former manager Steven Pressley having been sacked last month, Carlisle United have appointed Chris Beech as their new manager. The 45-year-old moves to Brunton Park on a deal which runs up until the end of the 2020/21 season. He joins the side as they lie in 21st place in League 2. “His enthusiasm when speaking to us was fantastic to see”, said chairman Andrew Jenkins. “We’re taking a new approach for the club in defining the position, with us in the past having appointed managers. “Chris will pick the team, coach the squad and organise the day-to-day routine as he prepares for each game”. Beech started his career at Blackpool, before spells at Hartlepool United and Huddersfield Town. He then signed for Rochdale in 2002, where he would spend the next 17 years first as a player, then in various coaching roles, including as assistant manager.

The Football League have relaunched their programme to get more people with disabilities involved in football, having recently received a donation of £500,000 by the Wembley National Stadium Trust, who provided funding as part of the “Every Player Counts” campaign. The EFL have said that almost 11,000 people with disabilities have been helped by the scheme in the three years that it has been running. 28 clubs currently run community organisations that provide the programme, with the programmes themselves being designed to involve and include those fans who have not been able to physically participate in football before due to their disabilities. “We look forward to hearing the many moving stories that we have become used to as the programme literally changes and improves the lives of its many participants”, said EFL Director of Operations Mike Evans.

Another draw taking place recently is that for the first round proper of the FA Trophy. As you are probably already aware, Barnet will be hosting Weymouth here at The Hive next weekend. It will be the first time that the two sides have meet in just under 31 years, with the last fixture being a GM Vauxhall Conference tie on 30th December 1988 at Underhill, with us winning 4-1 in front of 2324 fans. Weymouth would go on to finish bottom of the league that season, getting relegated. They currently play in the National League South, and go into this weekend in second place, six points behind leaders Wealdstone.

41

BARNETFC.COM

Some other notable ties in the draw include rivals Enfield Town hosting Ebbsfleet United, Kingstonian entertaining Woking, and Royston Town taking on Hertfordshire rivals Boreham Wood. Arguably the tie of the round is a tie between two former Football League sides in Chesterfield and Notts County, which was a League 1 fixture as recently as 2015. There are four other all National League Premier ties, including Harrogate Town vs Hartlepool Town, FC Halifax Town vs Wrexham, Sutton United vs Dagenham and Redbridge, and Torquay United vs Aldershot Town. Winners qualify for the second round, which takes place next month. Winners of this round of fixtures would need to win three more times before reaching the two legged semifinal, before the Wembley final on 17th May.

Just like the Conti Cup encounter, there was a red card shown as Coombes was dismissed for a foul on Nikita Whinnett. Both sides also had firm shouts for a penalty too but both were left frustrated by the ultimate decisions, in the end, a point apiece is what both sides deserved in a tight and cautious encounter. In a game of few chances, the Bees saw speculative efforts from Merrick Will and Nicola Gibson dealt with by the Addicks keeper, meanwhile up the other end, Quantrill was alert to smother at the feet of Charlie Devlin. Five minutes before the break we had controversy as Whinnett appeared to round Katie Statrup but was brought down by the ‘keeper, despite big appeals the shouts were waved away by the officials. Into the second half and there were more penalty shouts, this time for the Addicks as Devlin was felled in the area, but like the first half, the shouts were ignored by the referee. Incidentally Devlin’s effort almost crept in, only for Georgia Robert to hack it off the goalline. With 20 minutes gone in the half, the visitors were reduced to ten players, as Whinnett was sent through on goal only to be tugged back by Coombes, the referee made no hesitation in producing the red card.

Despite the numerical advantage, chances were at a premium for the Bees, Meg Alexander whipped a curling effort just wide in a spell of pressure from Lee Burch’s side. Then came what looked to be the sucker punch goal as Charley Clifford powered home a header from a corner with only three minutes left of normal time. But the Bees had other ideas as they almost immediately went up the other end and found an equaliser, as Hazard pounced from six yards out to touch home, sending the Bee Army into delight. The relief was palpable come full time as the Bees secured what could be a precious point over their London rivals. Up next for Burch’s side is the visit of table-toppers Aston Villa, as they visit the Hive London next Sunday for what is set to be a classic Championship encounter.

Akinola’s

“It was a collective performance, where we worked hard and did the basics well”. “We got ourselves ahead on the score-sheet which always helps, to a man I thought we played well” It was Akinola’s first time on the score-sheet since the win away at AFC Fylde and will most certainly boost the striker confidence. With a busy Christmas period to come, Akinola is sure that yesterday’s win can be a big confidence boost for the whole team.

Bees striker Simeon Akinola expressed his delight after his hat-trick helped his side to a 5-2 victory over Ebbsfleet United. Our number 14 was influential in last night’s victory over the Fleet as he was at his clinical best in front of goal. He scored his first on the stroke of half time with a neat finish, before adding a second goal to put the Bees 3-2 ahead, he finally rounded off the scoring with his third and our fifth with a cool penalty.

“It’s always good to score and I have to keep working hard to make sure I can remain in the team”

Akinola was pleased to be on the score-sheet but keen to emphasise the importance of the team effort that went into the victory.

“I feel like it can be a turning point for us. It’s a positive start but we have to continue now” “We will always back ourselves against anybody, we have to go into each game with the mentality of working hard and doing the basics well to get three points”

Lauren Pickett’s leveller on the stroke of half time looked to have snatched a point for Lee Burch’s side, but a late Emma Follis free kick gave the Villains all three points.

Up the other end, Nikita Whinnett was lively and saw an effort deflected into the gloves of Rogers. The second half an open affair, the Bees gave everything to take a priceless result.

The opening 20 minutes was a cagey affair, with the visitors dominating the possession without creating a clear opening. The Bees too looked to get in the right positions but the final ball just wouldn’t fall to an amber shirt.

With 15 minutes to play the visitors retook the lead as Emma Follis struck home from a long range free-kick, it was cruel on Lee Burch’s side just as they looked to build some pressure.

Midway through the first half, the visitors took the lead as West ghosted in at the back post from a corner to tap home and give Villa the advantage. The league leaders continued to dominate and would’ve been two goals to the good, but for Sarah Quantrill who saved well at the feet of Sophie Haywood. It wasn’t all one-way traffic however, Lauren Pickett saw a deflected strike well stopped by Sian Rogers as the Bees looked to get back on level terms. Haywood was in again but yet again it was Quantrill who denied her as she got there just in front of the Villa attacker. Just on the stroke of half time we were level, as Pickett burst through on goal, before tucking it into the bottom corner, tucking away her 5th league goal of a prolific season. Into the second half and the first opening fell the way of the visitors as Quantrill had to be alert to tip over a looping effort from the edge of the box. 49

BARNETFC.COM

The visitors has more chances towards the end but again Quantrill stood firm to keep her side in the contest. The Bees huffed and puffed but couldn’t quite find that equalising goal on a frustrating afternoon at The Hive London. Burch’s side will look to build from the lessons learnt from today’s game as they travel to high flyers Sheffield United next Sunday, (2pm KO) in what looks set to be an intruiging match up. Our next game at The Hive is our last before Christmas as we take on Blackburn Rovers on Sunday 15th December. So please come along and cheer on the Bees in another crucial league match. BARNETFC.COM

Billy MEADOWS RIP We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former Barnet FC player/manager, Billy Meadows. Billy represented the Bees on over 150 occasions, scoring 93 goals along the way. Following a brief return to the club in 1973, Meadows took up the role of player/manager in 1975 and guided his team to the 1977 Southern Division 1 South title. Billy will be remembered not only as a fantastic football player, but more importantly, a good person with an incredible sense of humour. Everyone at Barnet Football Club would like to send their thoughts and prayers to Billy’s family at this difficult time.
