DARREN CURRIE

WRITES

Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to The Hive London for today’s National League fixture against Boreham Wood. On to today’s game, our defeat to Boreham Wood on Boxing Day is very fresh in our memories. We underperformed that day, there is no disputing that.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate John Still on a truly outstanding career in football management, a career that has spanned over 40 years with so many successful seasons. He retires as the most successful manager in the National League and, on a personal note, he has given me so much help and guidance throughout my time as his number 2. I also had the pleasure of playing under John on two separate occasions, one of which being so close to home here at Barnet.

I want to see the boys continue to perform with confidence and belief. I also want there to be a real connection between the players and the fans. If we are all together, we stand a much better chance of achieving what we all want. I cannot emphasise how important it is that everyone gets right behind the players today for the whole 90 minutes. I know what our supporters are capable of. You helped me so much as a player, I loved playing in front of you.

As I embark on my first steps into management, it’s to my advantage that I have someone with his wealth of experience in my corner and on my side. I was extremely proud on Saturday, having my first taste of management at this club, a club so close to my heart. I was pleased with how players applied themselves on the pitch for myself, Junior Lewis and Danny Senda. The support that we had before, during and after the game was truly humbling.

This group are a good group, please support them the same as you supported me.

I couldn’t have asked for much more from my first game in management; a clean sheet, a victory and a very hard working performance. I walked out of that stadium on Saturday very pleased.

Enjoy the match, #LetsBeeTogether

SKIPPER’S

NOTES

Hello everyone, Happy New Year and welcome to The Hive London for today’s National League game against Boreham Wood! Boxing Day was very disappointing. We didn’t have time to rest and reflect on what had happened as we were straight back into it against Dagenham. It was a good result for us, I was pleased with the reaction from the boys and happy to get the first win for Darren in caretaker charge. We have only conceded one goal in our last three games and we have won two of those three. We are looking to build on that today.

We’ll be looking to exact a little bit of revenge today after defeat to Boreham Wood on Boxing Day.

We’re back at home and we want to be able to take the game to them and impose ourself, be more positive going forward and earn that win.

John’s retirement from management was a bit of a shock to us when we found out on Friday, but on behalf of all the boys, I would like to congratulate him on an outstanding career.

Come on you Bees!

Callum

Boreham Wood

That sadly ended in relegation at the end of the 1999/2000 season under the then new Chairman Danny Hunter who remains our Chairman to this day. However, the club did bounce back immediately from that disappointment and once again gained promotion to the Isthmian League Premier Division, as Isthmian League Division One Champions in 2000/01.

FOOTBALL CLUB

Following the Football Association restructuring of nonleague football in 2004, Boreham Wood competed for the first time in the Southern Football League, playing in Division One East for two seasons. Winning the championship in 2005/06 the club was promoted again and returned to the Isthmian League Premier Division for the 2006/07 season.

HISTORY Boreham Wood Football Club celebrated its 70th Anniversary at the end of the 2017/18 season, having been formed in 1948 following the amalgamation of Boreham Rovers and Royal Retournez. The anniversary was celebrated in spectacular style with an appearance at Wembley and also beating a Football League club for the first time ever in the FA Cup – more later on both!

Alongside the championship success in the 2005/06 season the club went on an incredible run in the FA Trophy, reaching the Semi-Finals. We are very proud to say that, at present, we are still the lowest ranked team to have reached the last four of that prestigious tournament.

First though, back to our formative years and the club gradually progressed through the Mid-Herts, Parthenon, Spartan and Athenian Leagues. Under the Chairmanship of local man Bill O’Neill and the management of fellow local man Mickey Hunter, the club moved forward by winning back to back promotions at Athenian League level, before being elected to the Isthmian Football League in 1974/75, under the management of another local man Micky Lennon.

The 2009/10 season was also a highly memorable one for the club, as it saw us finish 4th in our Isthmian League Premier Division campaign and take part in a League Play-Off for the very first time. After defeating Aveley 1-0 away in the Semi-Final, the club went on to beat Kingstonian 2-0 at home in the Final and, under the shrewd management of Ian Allinson, we deservedly took our place in the Football Conference South.

In 1976/77 the club won the Isthmian League Division Two Championship by sixteen points and then had a five season spell in the Premier Division during the late seventies and early eighties. It then enjoyed another much more successful spell in the Premier Division during the nineties under the Chairmanship of Phil Wallace and the managerial expertise of Bob Makin.

A poor start to our inaugural 2010/11 Conference South league campaign saw us initially struggle to compete at that level and we sat bottom of the table around the Christmas period.

BARNETFC.COM 12

OPPOSITION

However, with clear leadership and further investment from our experienced Chairman, our manager Ian Allinson, our dressing room and our supporters all came together. We rallied and recovered well to finish in a very respectable 14th place.

A Lee Angol set piece put us ahead early in the second half before a late Whitehawk penalty levelled proceedings. However, a Junior Morias goal in the first minute of extra time proved to be the winner and sent the club into raptures and the town into delirium. Who could believe it, little Boreham Wood with the lowest average attendance in the league had deservedly achieved promotion to the top tier of Non-League football for the very first time in our then 67 year history!

The 2011/12 season saw us build on our efforts from the first campaign and we achieved an excellent 8th place. The following season, 2012/13, saw the club start very well, only to finish poorly and from occupying a solid play off place in early March finished in a disappointing 9th place. However, the undoubted story of that season, was our glorious FA Cup run and First Round proper appearance that ended in a 2-0 defeat against a very good Brentford side at Meadow Park.

The 2015/16 season was undoubtedly an historic season for the Wood with us competing at the top table of non-league football for the very first time in the newly named National League. It was, though, no fairy-tale opening season at that level against much stronger opposition. In fact it proved a very difficult one just to survive and, apart from our opening day 3-1 win against Halifax, and the odd big win against the likes of Tranmere Rovers, we struggled to compete with the bigger clubs.

The 2013/14 season ended in cup success, with a Herts Senior Cup triumph defeating local rivals Bishops Stortford on penalties in the final. Another poor start in our league campaign, however, meant the club had a long relegation battle on its hands for the majority of the season but a strong finish saw us end up in 13th place. Another cup run saw us again reach the First Round proper of the FA Cup, and that culminated in us holding Football League One side Carlisle United to a 0-0 draw at Meadow Park. The replay ended in heartbreak, though, as we led 1-0, only to miss a penalty before two late goals saw us bow out of the competition 2-1.

By the October we had lost our very successful long standing manager Ian Allinson to his increased work commitments. We had replaced him with Allinson’s experienced, but young, assistant manager Luke Garrard who was just 30 years of age and we continued to struggle and adjust to football at that level and faced a relegation battle that took us to the very last game of the season.

In 2013 we got the go ahead to build a brand new 870 seater West Stand. The project was finally completed in May 2014 at a cost of around three quarters of a million pounds. The stand was officially opened by Mr Arsene Wenger in front of a bumper crowd of 3,400, in a specially arranged friendly against an Arsenal First Team on Saturday 19th July 2014.

The final three league games of the campaign will long live in the memory as it saw us beat Aldershot away 2-1, Guiseley at home 1-0 and then Welling United 3-0 away. That end of season turnaround finally secured our place in the National League Premier and sent our Chairman, Manager, staff, dressing room and supporters into raptures.

The 2014/15 season was, at the time, the most successful in Boreham Wood Football Club’s history. After leading the Conference South for the majority of the season, a controversial defeat at eventual League Champions Bromley cost us the title and so we took our place in the end of season Play-Offs.

The following season, 2016/17, saw the club improve further, with an 11th place National League finish but the best was still to come one year later. During that 2017-18 season the club finally realised two ambitions, the first of which was to beat a Football League club in the FA Cup. That happened on Saturday 4 November 2017 with a 2-1 victory over famous FA Cup winners Blackpool. Going a goal down with under half an hour left did not suggest that history was about to be made but an equaliser from Blair Turgott paved the way for Dan Holman to secure his place in the club’s history books with a very late winner.

After playing magnificently to beat Havant & Waterlooville 2-0 away from home, and then drawing 2-2 at home in a two legged Semi-Final, we faced the then big spending and strongly fancied Whitehawk Football Club at Meadow Park in front of a partisan 2,200 crowd.

appearance in the Play Offs and this time in the new format where 6 clubs were involved.

Optimism in our future has long returned to Meadow Park and we hope it will now lead to greater home support, greater sponsorship and, of course, further investment as we continue to progress. After the incredible infrastructure overhaul and huge facility investment in recent years, the club has never looked in better shape. We now have the excitement of another National League season to enjoy and the future of Boreham Wood Football Club has never looked brighter throughout our 70 year history.

In the eliminator round we beat AFC Fylde 2-1 in a hard fought game but suffered a series of nightmare injuries losing 3 key players before and during the game and putting them out of the remaining Play Off matches. We then faced Sutton United away just three days later, without those three key players but a stunning performance led to a 3-2 win against the odds. When the nerve wracking period of injury time ended, those present celebrated the impossible dream – Boreham Wood were going to play at Wembley Stadium! The second lifetime ambition of many at the club was to be realised in the same dramatic season as the first. A place in the Football League was at stake but it was not to be, losing 2-1 to Tranmere Rovers but the memory of the day, the walk down Wembley Way and seeing over 4,000 fans supporting the club will last forever in the memory of everyone connected with the club. Our Chairman Danny Hunter can proudly claim that he has overseen our rise through both the Ryman Leagues, the Conference South and into the National League where, in our fourth season, we are regarded as an established club at that level, the pinnacle of non-league football. During our Chairman’s tenure, he has continued to invest or raise over £14 million, to greatly modernise our current infrastructure, our player recruitment, our ground and facility, which has improved the football club hugely and enhanced every fan’s matchday experience when they visit our Meadow Park home.

In 2017 he secured further investment of £1.8 million building a new training facility, laying a new DESSO pitch of Premier League quality, installing new floodlights and dugouts.

Danny joined the Wood in July 2015 with plenty of Football league experience having made over 250 appearances with spells at Exeter City, Crewe Alexandra, MK Dons, Bristol Rovers and Tranmere Rovers. The defender’s career began at Chelsea where he made over 70 appearances for the reserves, but later departed without making a first team appearance. After being released by Chelsea he moved down to the South West and joined Exeter City.

Boreham Wood secured the return of Femi Ilesanmi, in June 2018. The leftback originally featured for the Wood in the 2016/17 campaign, where he started all but four matches under Luke Garrard. The attack-minded defender began his career in the academy of AFC Wimbledon, before being snapped up by Queens Park Rangers. He departed Loftus Road without making a senior appearance and would sign for Dagenham & Redbridge, via Ashford Town.

After two seasons at Exeter, he joined Crewe for a fee reported to be £30,000. It was his versatility that persuaded Dario Gradi to sign him as he could play anywhere along the backline and in midfield. After his contract expired in 2011, he joined MK Dons and made 66 appearances before joining Bristol Rovers. After departing the Gas, he signed a six-month contract with Tranmere Rovers, where he made five appearances before suffering a metatarsal injury. Danny combines his first team footballing duties, with a coaching role in the hugely successful PASE academy.

While with the Daggers, Femi featured over 100 times, across a four-year stay, before departing for League Two outfit York City. Ilesanmi would go on to make a further 70 appearances for York City, before he began the first of his spells at Meadow Park.

David signed for Scottish Premier League team Hibernian on a three-year deal in July 2010 and made his debut for Hibs as a substitute in the opening day 3–2 win at Motherwell on 15 August.

Highly rated central defender Manny Parry joined the Wood in June 2018, having departed Dover Athletic. The 24-year-old central defender joined the Wood on the back of a very successful campaign, having been named in the Non-League Paper’s Team of the Season for 2017/18.

Stephens left Hibs in August 2012 and signed for Football League Two club Barnet. Stephens featured regularly for Barnet, forming several different centre back partnerships throughout the course of the 2012/13 season. Barnet kept 15 clean sheets out of 46 games in the League in total, but were relegated following a 2–0 loss to Northampton on the final day of the season. Boreham Wood captured sought-after midfielder Tom Champion on a one-year deal in the summer of 2017. Champion began his career in the academy at Watford, but departed for Barnet in 2004 without making an appearance.

Born in Brixton, Shakes began his career at Bolton Wanderers in 2004 and made his debut in an FA Cup third-round replay against Tranmere Rovers in January 2004, scoring a last-minute equaliser to take the match into extra time. He failed to make a league appearance for Bolton, and after spells on loan with Bristol Rovers and Bury, joined Swindon Town in July 2005. Shakes made almost 70 league appearances in two seasons at Swindon but was released at the end of the 2006–07 campaign.

The midfielder helped the Bees to the then Conference title in his first season at the club, however departed later that summer for Bishop’s Stortford. The 31-yearold would make over 100 appearances for Bishop’s Stortford in a five-year spell with the club.

He joined Brentford in August 2007 after training with the club during the summer and scored a late goal on his debut in September 2007 to give Brentford victory at Bury. After making 39 league appearances, Shakes was released at the end of the 2007–08 season. He joined Conference Premier club Ebbsfleet United in July 2008. Having scored 11 goals for Ebbsfleet, he added to that statistic by scoring eight goals in 40 league appearances for the club during the 2011–2012 season. On June 28, 2012, Shakes signed for Kidderminster Harriers and made 17 appearances helping the club finish second in the Conference Premier.

Spells with Braintree Town and Dartford followed, where he played a pivotal role in the latter’s promotion to the Conference. A run which included an underdog victory over Football League opponents Northampton Town in the 1st Round Proper.

The 28-year-old left the Valley for Fisher Athletic without making an appearance, but was back in the Football League a year later with League One outfit Yeovil Town. Bradley Ash first signed for Boreham Wood during the summer of 2017, joining on a season-long loan from Championship side Barnsley. However, his loan spell was cut short, as he suffered a serious knee injury, during pre-season. The young forward had impressed Luke Garrard enough in that short period though, who snapped up the striker permanently, upon his departure from Barnsley, in 2018.

Boreham Wood completed the signing of former Yeovil Town midfielder Connor Smith in July 2018. The former Republic or Ireland Under 21 international arrived with an impressive Football League C.V., having previously enjoyed permanent spells for AFC Wimbledon, Plymouth Argyle and Yeovil Town. Born in Ireland, Smith’s footballing talents first came to prominence on Sky television show “Football’s Next Star.” The offensive midfielder was runner up to Ben Greenhalgh in the 2010 addition of the show, which attracted the interest of Watford, who signed him on a youth contract. Smith signed his first professional deal with Watford in 2012 and would go on to make his Football League debut with the then Championship club three months later, against Crystal Palace.

The young forward joined the Tykes in Janaury 2016 from West-super-Mare AFC following an eye-catching debut season in the Conference South, netting 14 goals in as many appearances. Ash has been capped for England Colleges and featured in an England C select XI. The 21-year-old spent last season back at Westonsuper-Mare on loan and netted an impressive 19 goals in 34 appearances.

The explosive striker would earn a move to England with Brentford in 2016 and then a callup into the first team just a month later. He started on the bench against Exeter City in the EFL Cup and replaced Emmanuel Ledesma to make his debut.

The now 25-year-old began his career at Reading, where he enjoyed loan spells with Ebbsfleet United, Yeovil Town, Plymouth Argyle and Shrewsbury Town. The attacker would then spend a stint in Scotland with Boreham Wood’s Irn-Bru Cup opponents Dunfermline Athletic. He enjoyed six months with the Pars, scoring seven goals in just 14 games.

Following 10 goals in just 18 games for the B team, Shaibu became a regular on the bench for the Bees first team, which earned him a fresh three-year contract. The striker has also spent time on loan in League One with Walsall. A tall and powerful striker with great pace and energy, Shaibu has stated that he models his playing style on Romelu Lukaku.

LUKE GARRARD MANAGER

Garrard started his career as a YTS at Swindon Town, making his full professional debut at 18-years-old against Oldham Athletic on 26th April 2003. He went on to make 17 appearances for the Robins before brief spells at Bishop’s Stortford, Boreham Wood and Northwood. Luke later joined AFC Wimbledon in March 2006. A cult hero with Wimbledon’s fans, he made over 100 appearances for the club, mainly as a right-back but also occasionally in the centre of midfield. In November 2008, Garrard tore his cruciate ligament during training which kept him out for the rest of that season. From the start of the 2009-10 season, he made only occasional appearances for the Wombles, which saw him re-join the Wood in January 2010. Luke couples his role as First Team Manager at Meadow Park with his role as the Academy Manager. The 31-year-old was originally an Academy Coach at the Club in 2008, before being promoted to Academy Director in 2012. Luke was the appointed Ian Allinson’s Assistant in 2013, a position he held for two-anda-half-years. Upon Ian’s Departure in October 2015, Luke was appointed as First Team Manager, with his first game in charge a 1-1 draw away with Guiseley. Luke would steer the Wood away from the relegation zone in the club’s inaugural season in the National League. The side clinched survival on the last game of the season away to already relegated Welling United with a comprehensive 3-0 victory. Luke’s stock has further risen in the following seasons, having last season taken the Wood to Wembley, for the first time in their history. The side achieved their highest ever league finish, in the National League play-offs, and Garrard steered the Wood to the Promotion Final against Tranmere Rovers, narrowly losing 2-1.

1973/74 Boreham Wood won the Athenian League First Division title in 1973/74. After the Athenian League Premier Division had been disbanded in 1973, Boreham Wood were placed in the First Division and won 25 of their 34 Athenian League games. The Wood lost only three times and were top scorers with 68 goals. They also boasted the best defensive record, conceding just 20 goals, gaining 56 points and finishing nine ahead of runners-up Cheshunt. The Wood also reached the FA Cup first round proper for the first time in their history, eventually losing 3-0 at Southend United. They joined the Isthmian League Second Division at the end of the season.

1976/77 Boreham Wood stormed to the Isthmian League Second Division title in 1976/77. The Wood swept all before them, winning 33 of their 42 Isthmian League games and losing just once at Meadow Park where they conceded only 11 goals during the season. Micky Lennon’s side boasted the best defensive record and conceded only 26 goals in the Isthmian League, gaining a record 103 points and finishing a remarkable 16 points ahead of runners-up Carshalton Athletic. DANIELE ACCURSO

A FOOT IN BOTH CAMPS BY DANIELE ACCURSO A FOOT IN BOTH CAMPS’ COMBINES MY TWO PASSIONS: HISTORY AND BARNET FC. I’LL BE TRAWLING THROUGH THE ARCHIVES TO FIND PLAYERS WHO HAVE PLAYED FOR BOTH BARNET AND OUR VISITORS. TODAY, WE LOOK AT THOSE WHO HAVE PULLED ON THE FAMOUS BLACK ‘N’ AMBER AND BOREHAM WOOD STRIPS.

David STEPHENS

The 6 ft 3 centre-back arrived at Barnet in September 2012 from Hibernian and went straight into Mark Robson’s side. Unfortunately, a then 21-year-old had to suffer the heartbreak of relegation to the Conference, making 42 appearances during that season but did win the Barnet supporters player of the season award. The bad times were soon replaced by the good ones though. In the Vanarama Conference, Stephens was at the heart of Edgar Davids’ and Martin Allen’s rock-solid defence. With a back-line that included Graham Stack, Elliot Johnson, Andy Yiadom and of course David himself, the Bees only saw their net bulge on 46-occasions throughout the 2014/15 season. The Welshman was rewarded with a new contract offer by the club but the defender refused it. Following that decision to not play with Barnet in League Two, following the club’s promotion, Stephens has not experienced the Football League since Barnet’s relegation during the 2013/14 campaign. After his departure, no league side came in for him rather surprisingly, but he soon found a home with local rivals Boreham Wood. For three-years now, ‘Denzel’ has been the first name on the Wood’s team sheet and was appointed club captain during the summer. Notably, during his time at Meadow Park, Stephens featured in last season’s playoff-final in which our visitors lost to Tranmere. Featuring for Barnet 130-times has nearly been matched by his impressive tally of 103 for Boreham Wood. I’m sure if he was to make an appearance today at The Hive, he’ll be sure to get a warm reception from the home faithful!

DANIELE ACCURSO

Clovis KAMD JO

He’s one of my all-time favourite Barnet players! Clovis Kamdjo wasn’t the most gifted footballer in the world however he was the epitome of playing with your heart on your sleeve and leaving nothing out on the pitch. A tenacious and energetic player, the Cameroonian was initially played as a centre-back however he could fill in as a defensive-midfielder which happened often under Lawrie Sanchez and then Edgar Davids. Part of the side which was ultimately relegated under Davids, Clovis fell outof-favour during that first season back in the conference and duly departed for Salisbury City in August 2013. 130appearances to his name in the Black ‘N’ Amber, Kamdjo will be remembered by the Bees for all the right reasons i’m sure. Following his departure to Salisbury City, where he stayed for one-season, Clovis went on to play for several National League sides such as Forest Green Rovers and then Boreham Wood. One year into his two-year contract with the Gloucestershire outfit, the Reading youth player joined our opponents in September 2015 until the end of the 2015/16 campaign. 35-games across all competitions for the North London side, Kamdjo helped the club stay up in their first season in the fifth-tier, so for that he will be fondly remembered by the Wood army. Clovis would go on to feature for York City in the National League and National League North before moving to St. Albans who ply their trade in the National League South.

MATCH REPORT

Early kick off on a crisp winter afternoon always promises much and for Mauro Vilhete it certainly did. On his welcome return to the team after almost a year out, he finished the tie with a beautifully slotted goal as Barnet stormed to a 2-0 victory over Dover.

chances, Ephron Mason-Clark could have had his name on the scoresheet twice, the better of his chances came as he brilliantly rounded the keeper but unfortunately couldn’t apply the finish that was required.

Barnet welcomed lowly Dover to the Hive at the start of a hectic Christmas period which sees them playing four matches in ten days. However, the finishing wasn’t as warm as the winter sun that shone brightly over the ground. A first half of few clear-cut chances.

It took only ten minutes for the bees to get their reward for their early second-half pressure. Callum Reynolds playing a 40-yard Pirlo-esq ball over the top of the defence for Jack Taylor to expertly finish. He showed great technique with a cute side-foot volley. How it stayed 1-0 for so long was unbelievable. The bees kept knocking at the door. Wes Fonguck and Mason–Clark having their shots fizz past the post.

Barnet were quicker out of the blocks between the two teams. Medy Elito back in the starting line-up, was the first to have a meaningful effort at goal. His deflected shot squirmed just wide, and it was the closest the Bees came to testing Mitch Walker in the Dover goal. The battle between Dan Sweeney and Inih Effiong was the highlight of an uneventful first half.

With 25 minutes to go Mauro Vilhete returned to the pitch despite not being in the initial matchday squad. An injury to Craig Robson in the warm-up allowed Vilhete to make his fairy-tale return. Dover pushed forward in search of an equaliser but in truth never looked like getting it. Again, had Effiong shown some composure Barnet may have been sweating but it always seemed more likely for the Bees to get their second.

The two giant’s aerial duals certainly offered Bees fans some good defending to cheer on. Dover grew throughout the half. Anthony Jefferey looked very lively down the left wing and it was his shot that was cleared off the line by Elliott Johnson.

Vilhete’s flick header from a corner tested the Dover keeper and Jack Taylor could have had his second of the day; his long-range effort whizzing narrowly over the bar. As Dover searched for an equaliser they left a lot a room at the back and it would be their downfall. Barnet caught them out on the counter in stoppage time.

Mark Cousins was certainly the busier of the two keepers saving two Dover shots well to his left-hand side. Dover should have taken the lead, a smart turn and snapshot by Effiong from about 6 yards out was the closest anyone came to breaking the deadlock.

Who else but Vilhete to slot the ball into the bottom corner to a great roar from Bees fans to seal the deal on national television.

It was clear that John Still had had some choice words with the players at the half; the bees stepped up a gear and had Dover all at seas. Barnet had a great number of

MATCH REPORT

A late Bradley Ash strike was the difference as the Bees were defeated at Boreham Wood. In truth, it was a game of few clear-cut chances for either side as both Boreham Wood and Barnet came head-to-head in the first league meeting between the two sides.

Ugwu rose highest from a corner but headed wide of the mark before Shakes volleyed off target from the edge of the box. Murtagh took aim from 25 yards out but Cousins got down well to keep out the effort.

Shaq Coulthirst had a header from an Elliott Johnson cross go wide prior to Jack Taylor taking aim from 20 yards but he fired straight at the keeper.

The deadlock was broken with just 2 minutes of regulation time to play.

Mark Cousins pulled off a great reaction save from Ugwu’s flicked on header at close range to keep the score level at the break.

Shakes played through Ash who, despite the offside calls, set himself and calmly powered it past Cousins to give the hosts all three points.

After the restart, Cheye Alexander fired wide of goal and Charlee Adams shot wide of the target from the edge of the box.

THE FREESTYLIN’ TYLER SWIFT I have always believed that it takes a special talent to do something badly well. Comedy great Tommy Cooper had it in abundance when regularly making a hash of magic tricks, but was in fact a well respected member of the Magic Circle, and for those with even longer memories Victor Borge was masterful at the physical comedy he could work with a piano, occasionally making apparent mistakes before correcting himself with a punchline that then launched into a virtuoso performance.

It is also clear from what transpired that afternoon that quite a few of the audience didn’t watch Soccer AM either, and - at least initially - took it all for real. To relive the magic – and tragic - I would recommend you to search YouTube for “Tyler Freestyler stuns Barnet and Crawley fans at The Hive”. For those not satiated at that point, there are a further 38 Tyler videos on which to gorge.

None of which, however, prepared either an unsuspecting Hive or myself for the arrival of Tyler Swift on December 19th 2015.

What I must add is that Tyler himself was an incredibly nice fellow to talk to before and after his spoof display. Definitely a real “please” and “thank you” guy, and someone who was absolutely humbled to be given the opportunity by the Bees to get out there and perform in front of a live audience, so top marks there.

The only advance notice I had was on my arrival at the ground, when one of the club’s staff forewarned me that, “Just to let you know, we have some freestyler performing at half-time”. And then added: “He’s awful.”

And it does take a special skill to do something badly well. Tyler had it, but it was a talent that only really commands fifteen minutes of fame, and he has now disappeared back into the mists from which he originally emerged.

To this day, I don’t know whether that last comment meant that he “got it” and considered that Tyler was a one trick pony, or “didn’t get” his schtick and thought that Tyler was simply a lousy freestyler.

Which means you’re now safe to go back in the water.

Either way, I don’t regularly watch Soccer AM, so was none the wiser. Fortunately, my son does – and quickly tipped me off as to what was in store.

Or are you?

WHAT’S THE BUZZ

WHAT’S THE BUZZ JOSH PALMER

Chesterfield boss Martin Allen has said that his side are “disappointing” after their 4-0 home defeat to Solihull Moors last Wednesday. “I thought it was a very disappointing afternoon all-round” he said, after they dropped back into the bottom four (at the time of writing). “The first ten minutes, I thought our performance from defending setplays, long balls, direct balls was appalling. Then every time they went forward, I thought they were going to score. It was an opportunity for some players coming into the team, who hadn’t been playing. I was expecting and hoping that they would come in and keep to the same standards that we had been playing to. But the standards were nowhere near it”. The side have suffered two successive relegations, having gone from League 1 to the National League in 2 seasons, and the threat of a third relegation in as many years in on the cards.

MO SALAH

MARTIN ALLEN

The FA have said that Liverpool forward Mo Salah will not receive punishment for his part in the penalty incident at Anfield on Boxing Day. The Reds won 4-0 against Newcastle United, with Dejan Lovren, Xherdan Shaqiri and Fabinho also getting on the scoresheet. Two minutes into the second half, with the score at 1-0, the Egypt international went down in the penalty area after the most minimal contact from Magpies’ player Paul Dummett. He went on to convert the awarded penalty, helping to send the club top of the Premier League by 6 points, after Manchester City’s shock defeat to Leicester City. The FA said that as there was contact between the players, even though small, it did not meet their criteria for a disciplinary charge. If the charges had been applied, Salah could have picked up a two-match ban, which would have resulted in him missing the key league games against Arsenal and title challengers Manchester City

UNAI EMERY

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has publicly apologised for kicking a bottle which hit a Brighton and Hove Albion fan during the tie between the two sides on Boxing Day. He revealed that he went to speak to the supporter in the stand immediately after the incident before doing so again at full-time. “I said to them I’m sorry” the Spaniard said. “It wasn’t hard but it touched one supporter. I said to them apologies because I kicked the bottle after a disappointing action for us in the last minutes”. Despite taking the lead after just 4 minutes, a mistake by the Gunners led to an equaliser 31 minutes later, with the game ending 1-1.

Following that 4-0 home defeat it was announced that Martin Allen had been sacked. Last Thursday saw him relieved of his duties due to the poor start that they have made to their league campaign, sitting in 23 place, having won just 4 of their opening 25 games, having draw 11 and lost 10. Also departing the Derbyshire club are assistant manager Adrian Whitbread and head of recruitment / goalkeeper coach Carl Muggleton, who both also spent time with Barnet under Allen. “On behalf of the club, I would like to thank Martin and his staff for their hard work and wish them all the very best for the future. The search for a new manager is now underway” said CEO Graham Bean. He continued to say that the clubs’ academy manager John Pemberton will take temporary charge of the club until a new manager is found.

WHAT’S THE BUZZ

Also in the transfer market, before the January window has actually started are National League title challengers Wrexham. The Dragons have signed Ben Tollitt on a short term loan from last seasons National League playoff winners Tranmere Rovers. Starting out his career in the academy of Premier League side Everton, he turned out for Widnes and then Skelmersdale United, before making his Football League debut for Portsmouth. However, after just a few month on the south coast, he returned to non league with Rovers, making 22 appearances, scoring 7 times, in all competitions as they were promoted along with league winners Macclesfield Town. He now joins the Welsh side on a short term loan spell, with clauses to extend the deal in required.

ALEX FINNEY

Aldershot Town have signed defender Alex Finney from Maidstone United. The ‘Shots have been through an injury crisis recently, being made to play a youth team in their FA Trophy first round replay against Bedford Town two weeks ago. The 22 year old joins the club on an 18 month deal, with the contract expiring at the end of next season. He has spent the last 18 months with the Stones, playing 24 times this season. He signed permanently in the summer, having previously spent last season on loan from QPR. He cam through the academy at Leyton Orient, before leaving for Bolton Wanderers in 2014. He made 3 appearances before returning to London with QPR in 2017.

BEN TOLLITT

With the side sitting in the relegation zone of the National League, having been relegated from League 1 down to the National League in the past two years, Ashley Carson has resigned from his post as director of Chesterfield. A notice was filed with the Companies House which has confirmed his departure from the board. As well as this, a club statement said: “Director and company secretary Ashley Carson has today resigned from the Chesterfield FC board of directors with immediate effect. He listed his current workload outside the football club as a reason for his resignation. With football club matters taking a considerable amount of his time recently, he wished to reduce his day to day involvement in the club”. The statement continued: “Carson will continue to remain as company secretary, attend board meetings and retain his three per cent of shares within the company. His shareholding is the third largest after Dave Allen and Sue Roberts. “He also confirmed that his director’s debenture would remain in place for now and that he would not be requesting the loan be repaid”.

RICHARD MONEY

ASHLEY CARSON

“It can take players a little while to get used to positions on the pitch, especially when they are new,” said Hartlepool United manager Richard Money. The former Scunthorpe United, Fulham and Liverpool defender joined United as manager on 11th December, and was trialling a new 4-1-4-1 formation. The side travelled to their local rivals Gateshead on Boxing Day, but were defeated 2-1. “I think there was evidence in the second half was the players are getting used to it” said the former European Cup winner. “The players were brave and I thought 2-0 was a disappointing scoreline but did not reflect the first half. We edged it but second half we were miles better”. Money replaced former manager Matthew Bates after he was sacked at the end of November on the back of six successive league defeats, having only joined the side as manager back in May 2018.

BARNETFC.COM 44

Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson said that he had “never experienced anything like” losing three players to head injuries in one game before, after the fluke took place during last Wednesdays’ 1-0 defeat at home to Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership. Charles Dunne and Carl McHugh were taken to Wishaw General Hospital after clashing heads 10 minutes into the game and sustaining concussion and head injuries. After another clash of head, substitute Christian Mbulu followed them to the emergency room with a suspected detached retina later on in the game. “I’ve come out of the dressing room and the boys are all in hospital” said Robinson “Two of them have really bad concussion. Both have been taken to hospital. Carl McHugh has a bit of history with that so we don’t know how long he’ll be out. We have a potential detached retina with Christian, so it’s crazy injuries”. STEPHEN ROBINSON

With the last fixture of the second round having taken place shortly before Christmas, the quarter finals of the Middlesex Senior Cup have been made. Last seasons winners Hendon, who are also the most successful club in the competition with 16 wins, have been drawn at home to Hayes and Yeading United, Wealdstone will host Brentford B and Harrow Borough will travel to Staines Town. Thanks to our 4-1 win over Wembley back in early November, we will now host National League South and our preseason opponents Hampton and Richmond Borough here at the Hive.

THE RECKLESS GUIDE TO

Sheffield United 06 • 01 • 2019 - KICK OFF: 2:00PM FA CUP 3RD ROUND LOCATION: BRAMALL LANE SHEFFIELD, S2 4SU

CAR PARKING

Chris Wilder is the current Gaffer at Bramall Lane. A defender who started at Southampton and made nearly 500 professional appearance for amongst others Sheffield United, Rotherham United, Halifax Town, Notts County and Bradford City. His management career began at Alfreton Town, he moved on to Halifax Town, Oxford United, Northampton Town and joined the Blades in May 2016.

Street parking is fairly unrestricted but arriving late will involve a bit of a walk. There is also the option of renting a private driveway near Bramall Lane via YourParkingSpace.co.uk.

EATING AND DRINKING LOCALLY The pubs very close to the ground ‘Sheaf House’, ‘Railway Hotel’, the ‘Golden Lion’ and

BRIEF DIRECTIONS BY ROAD Allow at least 3-4 hours for the journey from Barnet. Leave the M1 at Junction its junction 33 and follow the A630 (Sheffield Parkway) into Sheffield City Centre. Follow signs for A621 Bakewell, where the ground is well signposted. My preferred route is more scenic via the A1 – this road has always been my fiend – junction 35 and onto the M18 and then onto the M1 for its junction 33 as above.

‘The Cricketers’ are for home fans only. On Eccleshall Road, about 10 minutes walk, is the Wetherspoons Sheaf Island. The Beer Engine on Cemetery Road comes recommended by the club. Close to the station are the Globe or my choice the Rutland Arms on Brown Street. Alcohol is available in the ground where the normal array of food is also on offer.

DIRECTIONS BY TRAIN OR COACH Sheffield Station is only about a mile away from the stadium. A 15 walk via St Mary’s Road is your route. An east Midlands train from St Pancras will take around 3 hours. At the time of writing – just before Christmas – Barnet FC had laid on four coaches (so far). Both Coaches A & C which depart from the Everyman in Barnet at 8.30am prompt are sold out. Coach B which runs from the Hive and also departs at 8.30am is full but Coach D from the Hive still has spaces. The return journey is just £12.00. Please book on line www.barnetfc.com BARNETFC.COM 50

THE RECKLESS GUIDE

GROUND DESCRIPTION

OVERNIGHT STAY FACTOR

The ground has a marvellous history and today boasts a capacity of just under 38,000. It is possibly the oldest stadium in the world still hosting professional football being built in 1955 as a cricket ground but started to stage football in 1862. (Mansfield Town argue otherwise but they did drop out of the professional league for a spell). The first ever floodlit match was held here in 1878. The ground was three sided until 1975 when the GAC cantilevered stand and car park swamped the old cricket outfield.

Had this been a Saturday kick off at 3pm an overnighter in the Steel City would have been a 7/10 but the FA just have to tinker with everything including tradition. I’ve got to go to work next morning! #beeinbonnet

CELEBRITY WATCH Autograph books and selfie stick at the ready everyone! Sean Bean, actor, Dave Berry singer, “Crying Game” 1964, in my top 10 singles of all time, Two Cockers Jarvis and Joe, Brian Glover, actor “I read a book once – green it was!”, a couple of Artic Monkeys, Eddie Izzard, a sort of comedian, Patrick “The Prisoner” McGoohan, actor, Michael Palin, outstanding personality, Donald “pick that pin up” Pleasance, actor, Gordon Banks, 1966 hero, Lord Coe, Jogger, Trevor Francis, Joe Root...........enough now?

This stand which with its large single tier and the Redbrik Estate with two tiers now meet in the corner. The John Street Stand has a line of executive boxes while the home fans stronghold is the Kop stand -the old terrace now converted to seating. A couple of pillars can obscure your view.

ADMISSION PRICES ADULTS £10.00 CONCESSIONS £5.00 to be purchased from the Hive in normal office hours or after the Wood game on January 1st. Tickets will be available on the turnstile at Bramall Lane for an additional £2.00 We will be allocated the lower section of the Redbrik Estate stand.

RIVALS A team in blue and white with a silly name on the other side of the city.

DAGENHAM AND REDBRIDGE AWAY POSTCARD After a disappointing loss against Boreham Wood and the announcement that Darren Currie would be taking the reins following John Still’s retirement, the match against an in form Dagenham had shaped up to be quite the event. After all the recent long drives, Dad made the decision to head down south on Friday night, staying near Toddington before we set off towards Dagenham at about midday on Saturday. We took the M1 and M25 arriving near Dagenham in enough time to get some lunch before heading towards the ground and parking at a nearby street. We walked to the ground, got a programme and a badge and took our seats behind the goal ready for kick off. The teams came out to a brilliant reception and the game was underway. We started the game strongly having lots of possession and we looked promising going forward. It was clear we were going for it. On 34 minutes we were rewarded when Shaq Coulthirst put us one up from a corner. The 301 Bees fans were buzzing with that and we continued the half with the same momentum going forward. At half time I had a lovely hot chocolate, not long after the teams were back on the pitch ready for the second half. It was apparent that Dagenham wanted to get their own back in this half but Cousins, Sweeney and Reynolds did a good job keeping their efforts away. Down the other end of the pitch, Jack Taylor was playing some lovely football going forward and it was great to see him joined by Simeon Akinola in his first game back since getting injured last season. Us fans were shocked with 5 added minutes at the end of the game but we managed to see the game out and come away with all 3 points. Chants of “Darren Currie’s black and amber army” as the boys went into the tunnel topped the day off nicely. We walked back to the car and set off back home up the M11 & A1 finally getting back to Leeds at about 9:30pm. It’s safe to say that was an excellent way to top off 2018 and I hope it continues in the New Year.
