Simon B ASSEY

Good afternoon everyone and I hope everybody is doing well ahead of this afternoon’s fixture with Aldershot Town. I would like to give a warm welcome to the Danny and his players to The Hive for what I am sure will be a very interesting battle.

On Maidenhead: When you go to Maidenhead if you don’t compete, you’ll find yourself beat and we certainly competed. There has been some accusations thrown at the group, some perhaps rightly so but you couldn’t fault their character last weekend. We had two days of training going into the game and there was lots to do, it’s a big job but we made a great start last weekend. You saw a team that worked hard, a team that was committed and a team that worked for the badge. Players put their bodies on the line and I was really proud of them.

On Aymen Azaze and Themis Kefalas: It was a big save, we switched off and got caught napping, he certainly turned up at that moment. It was a great save from Aymen. I was really pleased with Aymen’s performance, you have to remember he is a young ‘keeper and this kind of game time will do him the world of good, I really hope he can continue to build his confidence and progress. With Themis, we knew what they were going to be about, I knew it would be a game of second balls and winning the ball before they could try to get runners in behind. I needed to protect our centre backs and I thought Themis did the ugly side of the game really well. I asked all the boys how they felt, the answer was tired. If anyone is going to play for me, they have to crawl off this pitch, that has to be the minimum requirement for us.

On our style: I am not sure the last time we kept a clean sheet, so it was a great starting point. We put a lot of focus on being tough to beat and being physically and mentally strong ahead of the last match. There wasn’t really time to focus on pretty attacking patterns, I had to make sure we were compact and hard to break down, I certainly won’t apologise for that. The clean sheet gives us something to build on and going forward will come with time and plenty of work on the training ground. Having the full week of training ahead of Aldershot will obviously give me more time to focus.

On Aldershot: They got a good result in the week and will be heading here with plenty of confidence. Danny is a good good manager and will have his side really well drilled. They still have hopes of getting into the playoffs and make no doubt about it, it’ll be a really difficult fixture. However, we have to take what we did well last weekend and bring that to the forefront on our home pitch. We need to be difficult to break down again and offer more of an attacking threat when we get the ball to our dangerous attacking players.

Sam BEARD

After his Man of the Match performance on his debut against Maidenhead United, we caught up with Sam Beard ahead of our clash with Aldershot Town.

On Joining the Bees: “It’s great to be here, it’s a great Club, great set up, great coach, the boys are really good and I’ve really enjoyed my time so far. I’m really pleased to be playing full time football and to be at the Club.”

On his first week and his debut: “It was a great game to come into, a clean sheet and the boss had us well drilled on the Thursday and Friday. He made sure we were solid. To come in and get the Man of the Match and into the Team of the Week, I was really happy. “It was a silly yellow from me to be honest, I probably shouldn’t have got it. From then on I had to be sensible, the boys were really solid and I felt we deserved the clean sheet.”

On his time at Dorking Wanderers: “I was with Dorking for five years, it’s a really good set up and the boys were quality. They are a Club that is on the rise and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them in The National League in the next couple of years. I think they would have secured it (promotion) this year, but I had a great time and they really helped me progress.”

On his relationship with the boys: “It was obviously nice to join on the same day as a new boy (Sam Skeffington), obviously the boss had just come in, so it was a pretty good time to join. It worked quite well in the end!

On making his Home debut: “I’m really looking forward to playing inside the stadium on Saturday, it looks really good, the pitch looks great! It’s going to be another tough battle, but we need to build on the clean sheet we got on Saturday and progress from there I think.”

On the rest of the campaign: “As a team, we have to keep building and get as many points as we can. We need to put in some better performances and give the fans something to shout about. We need to play for the badge, do as well as we can and finish the season on a high.”

Match Report 0 MAIDENHEAD UNITED FC

SIMON BASSEY AND DAVE ANDERSON PICKED UP A POINT IN THEIR FIRST GAME IN CHARGE OF THE BEES AS THE TEAM PLAYED OUT A 0-0 DRAW WITH MAIDENHEAD AT YORK ROAD.

HOW IT HAPPENED Bassey and Anderson were overseeing their first match in charge of the Bees and were expecting 100% from all their players from the off and that is certainly what the Bees looked to offer in the opening exchanges. Neither side were creating much in the way of chances, although the Bees had a few early shouts for a penalty, which were waved away by the referee. It would be the home side who would have the first real sighting at goal through Rohan Ince, whose effort was driven just wide.

0 BARNET FC

The hosts did have the ball in the back of the net on the 60th minute mark, but again were caught out for offside. The early intensity in the half seemed to quieten down a bit with neither side creating any chances, but Azaze was kept on his toes when called into action, parrying away a shot from the edge of the box with just over 20 minutes to go. Defensively the Bees were having a superb afternoon, but in attack there was very few chances to talk about, with JJ Hooper getting the Bees first shot on target in the second half after 77 minutes with a tame effort. Maidenhead were probably having more of the ball and were starting to gain momentum as the game entered the final ten minutes, having a succession of chances, but the Bees were putting their bodies on the line to defend each and every one. However, as the fourth official was getting his board ready with stoppage time, Ephron Mason-Clark broke at pace, playing in an inch perfect pass to Hooper, who was just denied by Taye Ashby-Hammond, in what was a golden opportunity for the Bees to snatch a win.

The Bees however continued to defend well and had their own chance on goal when Harry Taylor got on the end of a free kick from Alexander McQueen, but his header was too soft to cause a threat.

The Magpies pushed hard in the four additional minutes to get the three points and were awarded a free kick just before full time, but the Bees remained resolute to clear it from harms way and earn themselves a hard fought point on the road.

Ayman Azaze had a relatively quiet first 30 minutes, but was then called into immediate action after a Bees mistake from a throw in allowed Danilo Orsi-Dadomo to go through on goal, but Azaze was on hand to pull off a remarkable save.

Barnet FC Team:

The game was starting to become very scrappy as it got closer to the break, as both sides struggled to put two passes together and maintain possession.

AZAZE, PRESTON, MCQUEEN, HOOPER, KEFALAS, TAYLOR, BEARD (NUGENT 90+4), SKEFFINGTON, MASON-CLARK, VAUGHAN, DALY

Both sides came out for the second half with a lot more intensity and some confusion among the Bees backline nearly allowed the Magpies an opportunity to get a goal, but were saved by the linesmen flag.

BARNET OVER 50’S Five PITCHES with 70 PLAYERS out at The Hive London in the sunshine.

With eight new to Walking Football. The Barnet Walking Football Team returned to The Hive London with a bang! It was a gloriously sunny afternoon at The Hive and there was lots of laughter and banter as the cobwebs of lockdown were blown away after lockdown. Eight new players appeared and there was a welcome return of Peter Spironi after he was injured. We then retired to The Hive Bar for a takeaway coffee and rested those tired legs after our first session back. Everyone agreed it was a great day, with the added bonus of a new goalkeeper in Reshad Sufraz. We’ve also celebrated the launch of our new monthly walking and cycling groups at the end of March, where 14 players led by Mike Moate and Kevin Ziants joined in a 10k walk to Stanmore. Whilst Seven bikers led by John Cockburn rode the 39k out into Hertfordshire. We’re more than a Walking Football Team, we like to be a community social hub. If you want to join our team, please email barnetwft@yahoo.com for details. Come on you Bees!!

TODAY’S OPPOSITION Formation and the Isthmian League Years On March 25th 1992, Aldershot FC became the first Football League team to fold during the season since Accrington Stanley in 1962. From the ashes came phoenix club Aldershot Town, who were formed on April 22nd 1992 and managed by exAldershot FC centre back Steve Wignall. The “new” Shots began life in Isthmian League Division 3 and opened the 1992-93 season in a carnival atmosphere at the Recreation Ground against Clapton. Braces from Mark Butler and Steve Stairs secured a 4-2 win in front of 1493 fans, which was more than watched their predecessors’ last home game at the same ground. Aldershot Town won their first 10 games and didn’t suffer their first (and only) defeat of the season until losing a league game at Clapton on January 2nd (at Clapton) in what was their 24th outing in all competitions. By then, they had

broken attendance records at most grounds at which they had played, buoyed by a superb away following of around 1000. The campaign finished with the Shots as champions by a commanding 18-point margin, whilst strikers Mark Butler and Steve Stairs scored a combined total of 62 goals in all competitions. A second successive promotion (via a third-place finish) followed in 1993-94 together with a run to the FA Vase quarter-finals. From the start of their inaugural season, Aldershot Town went 20 months (35 games) before suffering their first-ever home league defeat – to Banstead Athletic in April 1994. Steve Wignall departed in January 1994 to take charge of Division 3 side Colchester United and was replaced by ex-Nottingham Forest winger Steve Wigley. Despite a strong finish to the 1994-95 season, the Shots missed out on a third successive promotion on goal difference. Following fifth- and seventh-place finishes over the next two seasons, Wigley left to take up a post in (former club) Forest’s youth set up in the summer of 1997. Following a spell under the caretaker management trio of Andy Meyer, Mark Butler and Joe Roach, Enfield boss George Borg was appointed in September 1997 and his first season yielded increased crowds and the Isthmian League Division 1 title. In 1998-99, striker Gary Abbott scored 48 goals in all competitions as the Shots won both the Isthmian League Cup and the Hampshire Senior Cup. In 1999-2000, they retained the latter trophy, won the Isthmian League

Charity Shield and ended the campaign as runners-up (to Dagenham and Redbridge) in the Isthmian League Premier Division. A fourth-place finish was claimed in 2000-01, whilst November 2001 saw a club record crowd of 7500 fill the Rec for the 6-2 defeat by Brighton and Hove Albion in the FA Cup first round. Following a run of poor results and pressure from fans, Borg resigned in mid-January 2002. Borg’s assistant Stuart Cash took temporary charge before Terry Brown left his post at Hayes in late March to come to North East Hampshire, thus beginning a five-year love affair with the Shots fans. Following a third-place finish and a third Hampshire Senior Cup win in 2001-02, the squad was overhauled and, having attained top spot in mid-November 2002 (ironically by way of victory over Brown’s former club Hayes), the Shots remained in top spot to claim the title and, with it, promotion to the Football Conference; they also retained the Hampshire Senior Cup with a victory over Bashley.

The Conference Years Following a home victory over Accrington Stanley, Aldershot Town remained in the play-off positions for the entire 200304 season as well as winning the Isthmian League Charity Shield (for a second time) and reaching the FA Trophy semifinals, where they lost to eventual winners Hednesford Town. Further disappointment followed, when the Shots were beaten on penalties by Shrewsbury Town (after a 1-1 draw) in the play-off final at Stoke City’s Britannia Stadium. That summer, one era ended as another began: record appearance-maker Jason Chewins left the club having worn the red and blue of Aldershot on 489 occasions. Meanwhile, the club went full-time. More play-off heartache was experienced in 2004-05, this time in the shape of a shoot-out defeat at Carlisle United in the semi-finals. The next two seasons were disappointing for the Shots (13th and ninth places respectively being secured), whilst the only silverware came by way of a fifth County Cup in 2006-07. In March 2007, Terry Brown resigned to take care of his wife, who had been ill for some time. Assistant Manager Martin Kuhl took caretaker charge for the remainder of the season. Promotion to the Football League Gary Waddock was appointed as Aldershot Town manager in May 2007, whilst Martin Kuhl stayed on as his assistant. The Shots played an attacking brand of football, especially at home, where they lost just three times and, having won the Conference Premier title by drawing 1-1 on an emotional night in Exeter, they finished the 2007-08 season with an 18-match unbeaten run and two divisional records: 31 wins and 101 points. A “double” was achieved as a 3-3 extra time draw against Rushden and Diamonds at the Recreation Ground was followed by a win in the shoot-out to claim the Setanta Shield. Sixteen years after the quest had begun, the town of Aldershot had a Football League side to cheer again. A club record £130,000 was received from Crewe Alexandra for winger Joel Grant in the summer of 2008.

The Football League Years Scott Donnelly (the Shots’ scorer “that night” at Exeter) scored the only goal of the club’s first-ever Football League game, a 1-0 win at Accrington, and the club finished a respectable thirteenth in League 2 in 2008-09. In mid-October 2009, Waddock and Kuhl left the (now named) EBB Stadium to join Wycombe Wanderers. Jason Dodd and Paul Williams took caretaker charge before exReading assistant manager Kevin Dillon was appointed as boss. An unexpected sixth-place finish was attained in 200910, but a 3-0 aggregate defeat to Rotherham United haled the Shots at the semi-final stage. With the 2010-11 season having yielded several poor performances, including a toothless 2-0 loss at Conference South outfit Dover Athletic in the FA Cup second round, Kevin (and assistant Gary Owers) were dismissed in early January having attained just a dozen wins from 39 games in all competitions. When Kevin departed the EBB Stadium, Aldershot were in 20th place in League 2 and just six points above the drop zone. The next occupant of the Shots hot seat was Dean Holdsworth, who resigned from his post at Newport County to come to Aldershot, eventually guiding the club to a mid-table finish that season. Aldershot Town gained nationwide attention in 2011-12, when FA Premier League giants Manchester United visited the EBB Stadium for a League Cup fourth round tie; 7044 fans saw the Red Devils win 3-0 in front of the Sky Sports cameras. The Shots had a good end-of-season run-in and eventually finished just six points outside the play-offs in 11th. Unfortunately, despite paying a club record fee to Stevenage for striker Craig Reid, neither the home form nor the style of play from the previous season was evident very much in 2012-13 and Holdsworth was sacked in midFebruary with the team in 20th spot. Former Rotherham United boss Andy Scott was brought in, but couldn’t stem the tide and relegation back to the Conference Premier (the club’s first such event) was confirmed at end of the season as the Shots eventually finished rock-bottom of the table.

Administration and Return to the Conference Premier On May 2nd 2013, just five days after their relegation from League 2, Aldershot Town officially entered administration with reported debts of £1.4 million. Following a period of uncertainty over the club’s survival, which led to the departure of the majority of the playing staff and numerous redundancies behind-the-scenes, the club exited administration under the auspices of a CVA on July 30th, with a consortium led by former chairman Shahid Azeem taking ownership of the club on August 1st. The Shots began the 2013-14 season with a 10-point deduction as a punishment for the aforementioned entry into administration. With a hastily-assembled squad (some of whom were signed in the hotel the night before the season’s opener at Grimsby Town) that hadn’t trained together, even the most ardent Shots fan wasn’t expecting the draw and

three wins in the opening seven games that saw the deficit wiped out by the first week of September.

2015-16 onwards

However, within two months of that achievement, Andy Scott’s men were knocked out the FA Cup by Gloucestershire side Shortwood United, who were three divisions and 65 places below them in the football pyramid; what made the 2-1 replay defeat (following a 1-1 draw) more embarrassing was that it occurred in North East Hampshire!

The 2015-16 season was another one of disappointing performances, epitomised by a club record 8-2 defeat by Chester in early March. The Shots finished the campaign having scored just 23 home league goals, equalled the club record for fewest home league wins (7) and most home league losses (12) as well as setting new club records for most league losses in a season (22) and lowest average home league attendance (1607); the season was also the fourth in succession in which the aforementioned crowd figure had dropped. Conversely, the nine away league victories was the club’s best tally since they won the Conference Premier in 2007-08. Another lasting memory will be the dearth of attempts on goal that the Shots had over the course of the season.

An eight-game winless run across January, February and March saw the Shots eliminated at the quarter-finals stage of the FA Trophy (by Havant and Waterlooville) and plunged into a relegation fight. However, Brett Williams’ 24 x league goals coupled with the return of Brentford loanee midfielder Manny Oyeleke and the arrival of centre half Mark Phillips (on loan from Southend United) resulted in the club’s Conference Premier place being retained. The team attained four wins out of seven at the end of the season, with safety being assured by a 2-1 win on Easter Monday at local rivals Woking in the penultimate game – Mission Accomplished!

Exiting CVA and Starting From Zero in 2014-15 On July 31st 2014, Aldershot Town announced that they had paid off all of their debts, which enables them to exit the auspices of the CVA after just 12 months – a massive two years ahead of the required date! The icing on the cake came with the additional news that the club had made “a modest profit” in the first year of trading under the new owners. Even though the fans’ expectation levels were low, the 201415 campaign still yielded very little joy. The only real highlight was the 1-0 victory over League 2 side Portsmouth at home in an FA Cup first round replay following a well-deserved 2-2 draw at Fratton Park. Another strong home display saw a goalless draw claimed against League 1 Rochdale in round 2, although many criticised the fact that the Shots’ dominance didn’t materialise into a victory. A season-defining four days was endured in mid-December – they were surprisingly dumped out of the FA Trophy at home in a first round tie by Isthmian League Division 1 South side Burgess Hill Town (who were 55 places below the Shots in the football pyramid) before being brushed aside by Rochdale in their FA Cup second round replay (4-1). Following constant criticism of his playing style, a run of just one win in 12 games in all competitions (including five successive home league defeats and just two wins in 11 league games that had seen the Shots drop to 18th in the table) led to Andy Scott being sacked in mid-January 2015. Defender Chris Barker took picked up the reins for the season’s remaining 15 games on a player-caretaker basis and led the Shots to Conference safety before stepping aside in the summer to become player-assistant to newly-appointed ex-Dundee boss Barry Smith.

With boss Barry Smith having decided to return to his native Scotland, May 2016 saw Gary Waddock become the first-ever Shots boss to return, which ultimately led to the Shots starting a campaign with a higher level of hope than had been seen for many a season. That optimism proved well-founded, as Waddock’s new-look side lost just three of their first 16 National League games and, after a sticky period in October and November saw them win just twice in ten games, then embarked upon a superb run from the start of December. The Shots lost just two games in the second-half of the season to secure fifth place in the table and a Play-Off semi-final against Tranmere Rovers. Unfortunately, The Shots lost the home leg 3-0 but at least restored a great deal of pride with a battling 2-2 draw in the Prenton Park return. Having retained the vast majority of his squad, Waddock entered 2017-18 with optimism. The squad picked up where they left off and spent the majority of the season challenging for the title. They lost 2-1 at home to eventual champions Macclesfield Town in February where a win would’ve put the Shots top of the league. Form dipped afterwards but the Shots still managed to finish 5th in the table and faced Ebbsfleet United in the new play-off eliminator format, with penalties and play-offs again proving to be the Shots ‘Achilles heel’, a fiercely contested 1-1 draw was played out at the EBB Stadium with former-Shots player Dave Winfield equalising in the final minute of extra time for Ebbsfleet, the Shots had two chances two win on penalties but failed to convert either and the Fleet progressed through. With key players from the play-off squad departing in the summer and replaced with a young squad, the Shots struggled to reach the heights of the previous two seasons, that, coupled with an injury crisis mid-season that saw a youth team sent to an FA Trophy game against Bedford Town culminated in the Shots relegation from the National League and Gary Waddock departing the club by mutual consent once the season had finished

National League side Wrexham have this week received a grant from the Welsh Government. The Red Dragons picked up the grant of £100,000 from the Welsh Government’s Spectator Sports Survival Fund. This comes after all National League clubs were offered £11 million in loans to cover their expenses earlier this year by the UK government, however with the club being based in Wales, the side were not eligible, despite having played in the English league system for over 100 years. The side currently sit in 7th place in the division, the bottom playoff position, 14 points off of top placed Hartlepool United, and level on points with eighth placed FC Halifax Town.

Just a week after having been taken over by an American investment fund called ORG, Ipswich Town have appointed Mark Ashton as their new chief executive. He has previously held the CEO position at Watford, Oxford United and Bristol City, where Ashton has held the position at Ashton Gate since 2016. He will officially depart the Robins for Portman Road on 1st June. Ashton drops down a division to League 1 from the Championship side, whose board of directors are due to be considering candidates for his potential replacement. The Tractor Boys currently sit in 9th place in the third tier, five points off of a playoff spot.

Walsall Town have appointed Jamie Fullarton as the clubs’ new technical director. The former Scotland Under 21 international has previously managed Bolt Wanderers’ reserve side, Notts County and FC Halifax Town in the National League. His playing career saw him feature for St Mirren in his homeland, SC Bastia in France, then Crystal Palace and Bolton Wanderers in England. After a brief return to Scotland with Dundee United, he returned to England with Brentford, Southend United and Chesterfield, before ending his playing days with the now defunct Woodlands Wellington in Singapore. The 46 year old has been brought in by the Saddlers to oversee their football department, mainly leading the League 2 sides’ recruitment of key personnel, alongside the clubs board. Fullarton has also recently worked at Palace, with his role consisting of identifying potential signings of younger players.

Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed some more bad news regarding their manager Darren Moore this week. He had initially returned to the club for training at the beginning of the week, having completed his mandatory covid 19 isolation period, but by Friday was reported to be set for another spell on the sidelines due to contracting pneumonia, which was in turn triggered by coronavirus. Moore was said to have felt unwell after his sides’ 2-0 defeat by Swansea City at Hillsborough on Tuesday evening. He is now set to spend another period away from the club, with Moore himself saying that he had blood clots on the lungs and being in extreme discomfort.

Last Saturday saw Swansea City defeat Millwall 3-0 at the Den to end their run of four successive Championship defeats, thanks to a brace from former Bee Jamal Lowe. The Harrow born forward came through the academy at Underhill, before going on to make 19 first team appearances, scoring on three occasions before joining Hampton and Richmond Borough in 2015. After just a year and a half in south west London, he joined Portsmouth, helping the side to promotion to League 1 in his two and a half season, then a season Wigan Athletic before joining the Welsh side at the start of this season. Both of Lowe’s goals came within an 8 minute spell towards the end of the second half, taking his total for this season up to 12 in 44 games in all competitions.

This weekend sees the fourth round of the FA Vase take place, having been delayed from the weekend of 9th January. Our only local side remaining out of the 32 are Hadley, who travel to Sutton Common Rovers this afternoon. The Bricks, who play in the Essex Senior League and play at Brickfield Lane, across the road from The Gate in Arkley, are currently on their best ever run in the competition, which was previously set at the second round, achieved in the 2009/10 and 2013/14 seasons. Elsewhere, North Ferriby FC, the phoenix club of 2015 FA Trophy winners North Ferriby United, are at home to West Auckland Town, FA Vase finalists in 2012 and 2014, Leighton Town take on Walton and Hersham, the 1973 FA Amateur Cup winners, and Cobham being awarded a walkover to the fifth round, after opponents Stowmarket Town withdrew from the competition for financial reasons.

Last time at The Hive The Bees made it three wins on the trot as a superb second half showing was enough to secure the points against Aldershot Town. After a cagey opening 45 minutes, two early second half strikes from MasonClark and Wes Fonguck gave Darren Currie’s men a comfortable cushion. A solid defensive display meant it was two home clean sheets on the spin, in a confidence boosting victory at The Hive, London. In the early exchanges Ricardo Santos made a superb block to deny Ethan Chislett as he struck just inside the area. The Bees struggled to really get going in the opening 15 minutes, as the buoyant visitors started quickly following their win over Stockport in their previous match. Midway through the half and it was Currie’s side who made the next opening, as Mason-Clark slipped in Fonguck but his shot was well saved by Mitch Walker. Seconds later it was Fonguck again but he couldn’t get the better of the Shots number one.

There was plenty of endeavour from the Bees but the final ball massively let them down in the opening 45, as they looked to build on back to back wins. At the other end Shields’ effort was brilliantly blocked at the end of the half, as the visitors tried to assert themselves at the end of the half. That was the final opportunity of a half that lacked any cutting edge on a chilly autumn evening in North London. Currie opted to bring on new signing Alfie Pavey at the break as he replaced Josh Walker. Just three minutes into the second half the Bees had the lead as Mason-Clark broke through and fired into the back of the net. In response the Shots came inches away from an immediate response as Powell struck a decent free-kick from 30 yards out, leaving Loach scrambling across goal. Just eight minutes later the Bees had a second of the evening, a whipped in ball was headed clear as far as Fonguck who curled an inch perfect strike into the top corner. It was superb strike and sent the Bee Army into delight after a fast start to second half. With twenty minutes to go the Shots should have halved the deficit but Harrison Panayiotou slotted wide from six yards after the ball fell to him kindly. The bar was rattled up the other end as Fonguck lifted the ball over Walker on the rebound, after Akinola broke into the area and saw his shot saved. The Bees were scintillating to watch at times in the second period, as their confidence grew following the goals. J Taylor saw a long distance effort fly over the bar, as the Irishman looked to add the icing on the Bees cake. The win means Currie’s men head to Halifax in good form as they will look to gain a positive result on the road against a promotion rival. A further three points sees the Bees climb to fifth in the Vanarama National League, with still only one defeat to their name.

Barnet: 1 S Loach (G/K), 2 C Alexander, 4 C Reynolds (C), 5 R Santos, 11 D Sparkes 7 J Taylor, 8 C Adams, 14 S Akinola, 18 W Fonguck, 22 J Walker (Pavey 45’), 27 E Mason-Clark (Vasiliou 87’)

STOCKPORT COUNTY AWAY POSTCARD An away day at Stockport must’ve been a dream one for my parents back when my brothers and I were younger because it’s such a short trip across the Pennines from Leeds, which means no restless kids asking “are we nearly there yet?” for 3 hours of a journey! I think my first visit to Edgeley Park was when I was about 6 or 7 years old but without social media it’s hard to pinpoint. Despite us not having played them for a while before last season, I always get excited about going to Stockport as, I’m sure most people know by now, I absolutely love a classic northern away day! When someone mentions Stockport to me, the first thing that comes to mind is always their old goalkeeper Matt Glennon. Back when we played them in 2010 I distinctly remember him having good banter with our fans probably fuelled by the fact we lost the game 2-1. He left such an impression that every time we’ve come up against him since even when he’s played for different sides it’s been a ‘thing’ in the family! I think it’s fair to say our last trip there will be in the history books for a long time as it was our last Saturday game before lockdown hit us. Due to me being in London I attended this game on the mini bus with other Barnet fans, enjoying a nice pre-match stop in Knutsford. It was a lovely day (I even met England goalkeeper Karen Bardsley) and despite the fact I felt we could’ve come away with all 3 points, as far as final days out go it was a good one. Northern teams always serve up very decent food too! It was great to see us carry on our improvement in performance in our recent game against Stockport and although we did lose, I thought it was a great performance against a team in the playoffs and we were so close to coming away with more.

Match Report 5 WEALDSTONE FC

THE BEES WERE BLITZED AWAY BY WEALDSTONE AFTER THE HOSTS SCORED THREE SECOND HALF GOALS WITH THE BEES DOWN TO TEN MEN. HOW IT HAPPENED The Bees made yet another slow start to a match and found themselves behind as John Okimo headed home unmarked from a Green corner. We responded well to falling behind and had a cracking chance to level things up, after good trickery from Antonis Vasiliou found Lee Vaughan in acres of space, but the fullback’s strike whistled past the post. The Bees saw a lot of the ball in the first half, but couldn’t unlock the resolute Wealdstone defence, with chances at a premium in the Easter Monday sunshine. We would once again become the leaders of our own downfall as we went two behind on the half hour mark, as the Stones won the ball on the halfway line and broke quickly, with Dennon Lewis firing a deflected strike past the despairing glove of Aymen Azaze. It is unfathomable how the Bees didn’t get themselves back into the game before the break, as they spurned a succession of chances to get one back. First, Mason-Clark found Anthony Wordsworth in space on the edge, only for his goalbound strike to be blocked away. Then it was Vasiliou, who was the Bees brightest player in the opening 45, who had the next chance as his deflected effort was saved by the legs of the Wealdstone of the ‘keeper. Before the young Cypriot did well to work some space on

the corner of the box, only for his effort to go inches past the far post. The Bees finally got their goal back just 120 seconds into the second half, after Vasiliou did brilliantly to get into box before squaring for Courtney Baker-Richardson who couldn’t miss. It all boiled over just before the hour mark, as BakerRichardson was shown a straight red for what appeared to be violent conduct after 20 of the 22 players were in a scrum pushing and shoving. The ten man Bees should have been level with 25 minutes to play, as substitute Muhammadu Faal raced clear one-onone but was denied by the ‘keepers legs when trying to slot home. It was a chance the Bees were left to rue as moments later the Stones scored their third of the afternoon, as Fasanmade poked home at the near post. It was four just a minute later as the Bees imploded and conceded a spot kick that was duly converted by Jacob Mendy. It was five moments later as Lewis added his second of the afternoon, as he had time and space to convert with the Bees pushed high the Stones half. Things went from bad to worse as Wordsworth limped off injured with eight minutes to play.
