JOHN DREYER

John, this is your first interview since arriving at Barnet FC. How have you found it so far? “It has been excellent and I have really enjoyed it from a personal perspective. “In terms of how the team have done, I think they have been very receptive to what we have told them. “I am looking forward to seeing what the next few weeks bring.” We have not played for a week now. How have we used that time to prepare for the Boreham Wood match? “The players have had a heavy schedule since I have been here and have had a couple of days off to rest after the Northwood game. “We have been back on the training pitch today ahead of the game Boreham Wood and we are looking forward to the match.”

“The team went through a tricky time before I arrived and we conceded a lot of goals. “We were disappointed to concede two at Torquay, but we came back and showed character. We have done quite well defensively since then. “During my first game against Torquay, we had a back four and none of them played in their respective positions. “It is crucial that you have a settled back four and a defensive unit for each game so that you can create some stability.” Boreham Wood have shown their quality this season, specifically in their FA Cup run. What challenges could they provide tomorrow night? “There will be lots of different challenges and they are a very well-driven team.

Sam King came in and put the players through their paces with some intense boxing drills. Can you talk us through that?

“Luke has done a fantastic job at Boreham Wood and their FA Cup run this season was a fantastic achievement.

“It was a hard workout for the players, but I think they enjoyed it.

“They have been playing with a real spirit and you can see that the players are buying into what the manager is trying to achieve.

“It is beneficial to try different training techniques and we would like to thank Sam for coming in.” We have scored eight and conceded none over the last two games. How do we keep that fantastic form going? “We need to be strong in both boxes which is what we have been recently. “We have defended for our lives at times which has been great to see. “At the other end of the pitch we have been clinical as well, especially against Dover Athletic. “We are looking for more of the same against Boreham Wood and Woking this week.” You played as a defender yourself, so how impressed have you been of the defensive work from some of the players lately? “They have been great since I have come in.

“They are at the top end of the table for a reason and have a lot of quality within the team. “I believe Marsh scored a hat-trick down against us in FA Trophy game and Boden is a proven goalscorer. “They have a certain way of playing and we must deal with that. “We are going to have to be physical and stand up to the challenge.” Saturday will mark six years since Chris East sadly passed away and I know you will be going to the bus stop at 12 o’clock to pay your respects to him. “Myself, the staff and our captain Jamie Turley are all going to go down to pay our respects. It is a sad occasion, but we remember Chris with fond memories. “Personally, I did not know him but I think it is so

ASSISTANT

DEAN BRENNAN

HEAD COACH JOHN DREYER

Ephron Mason-Clark has been called up to the England C team. How much praise does he deserve for that? “Ephron deserves a lot of praise and it is a proud moment representing England at any level. “He is a player I had heard about and since working with him closely, you can really see his quality. “He is a real star in the making and he wants to learn. “A huge congratulations to him because it is a fine achievement.” Tuesday evening will be a game under the lights at The Hive London in a local fixture. How are you personally looking forward to that? “I love a Tuesday night game and I am really looking forward to it. “From a coaching perspective, I want to see how far we have come because we are playing against one of the top sides in the league. “We want to be swapping places with the likes of Boreham Wood, so this is a good marker for us. “We know we have quality in our team and Tuesday will give us an opportunity to show that and make a statement.”

WALKING FOOTBALL

WALKING football

BARNET OVER 50’S BARNET WALKING FOOTBALL TEAM IS GOING STRONG! We are incredibly proud to be recognised as an FA accredited club! Our football for all ethos, social groups and internal structure through a planned path has seen us receive this amazing recognition. On the pitch we visited our neighbours Cedars Harrow with our A team that was captained by Tom Moran. We won 4-2 and drew 2-2 in two exciting matches. Our B team captained by Remo were 2-0 and 3-2 down to Cedars before Kevin Ziants equalised in the last minute. Great character was shown by the players, and we are pleased with the results. Off the pitch we continued our support for Colindale Community Garden. We recently helped to plant apple trees to provide groceries to the food bank. We were pleased to welcome Melvin Lyons and Health Watch Barnet to The Hive London to talk to us about services available from 111 to vaccines. It was a valuable experience for us all. To join our walking football sessions, please email BarnetWft@yahoo.com Everyone is welcome to our sessions and we would like to wish Dean and the lads all the best for tonight’s game!

TODAY’S LOOK AHEAD

DANIEL POWELL

TODAY’S LOOK AHEAD

Daniel, we have had two fantastic results lately. How has that impacted the mood around camp?

“My aim is to stay fit for as long as possible, given the frustrating knocks I have had so far this season.

“It has definitely had a positive impact on us all, especially after the 6-0 win against Dover Athletic.

“I want to be playing in loads of games and contributing to goals.

“We are also into a final which is great for the club, no matter what competition it is in.

“It is always nice to score and I am hoping to finish the season with a few more goals under my belt.”

“We showed a lot of quality to score six against Dover and there was a lot of character shown from the lads against Northwood too.

We host Boreham Wood for a third time tomorrow night. What are you expecting from them?

“We had a good week and will be looking to continue the positive performances against Boreham Wood and Woking this week.”

“They have had a great FA Cup run and shown they can beat top teams. “It shows the level of this league and how good it can be.

You have suffered with a couple of injuries this season, how are you doing now?

“We know their threats in the team and it should be a good game to be involved in.

“I have just suffered from a few small injuries that have kept me out for short periods of time.

“We drew 0-0 at their place so we have shown that we can match them.

“They have not been too serious which is good though.

“This time we are looking to go one better and secure the victory.”

“I am hopeful that I can get over them and get a good run in the team.” How frustrating has it been to keep suffering minor setbacks? “It is frustrating, but these things are part of being a professional footballer. “The aim is just to stay fit for as long as you can, which I have done throughout my career.

Eight goals and none conceded over the last two games is impressive. How do we continue that form? “We have good players at the back and have a lot of quality going forward. “As long as we play with confidence and have the belief that we have got in ourselves, then we can score goals.”

“I am just hoping I can have a good end to the season.”

This is the fourth time we play Boreham Wood this season. What do you remember from those matches?

We have Reece Grego-Cox and Louis Walsh also in attack now. How have you found the competition for places?

“We know that they have been big, physical and direct for most of this season.

“Reece and Louis are both great lads who have a lot of talent.

“We have not beat them yet, so we owe them one when they come to The Hive London.”

“They have come in and shown what they can do, especially in training. “When you have competition, it only brings out the best in players and that is always a good thing. “It keeps everyone on their toes and it is healthy for us all.” As we approach the final few months of the season, what are your ambitions for yourself and the team?

It is another game under the lights at The Hive London. How much are you looking forward to it? “It is a derby game and we know that the fans will be up for it. “It will be a good test for us and we are all looking forward to the occasion.”

THE OPPOSITION

TODAY’S OPPOSITION

Club History Boreham Wood Football Club celebrated its 70th Anniversary at the end of the 2017/18 season, having been formed in 1948 following the amalgamation of Boreham Rovers and Royal Retournez. The anniversary was celebrated in spectacular style with an appearance at Wembley and also beating a Football League club for the first time ever in the FA Cup – more later on both! First though, back to our formative years and the club gradually progressed through the Mid-Herts, Parthenon, Spartan and Athenian Leagues. Under the Chairmanship of local man Bill O’Neill and the management of fellow local man Mickey Hunter, the club moved forward by winning back to back promotions at Athenian League level, before being elected to the Isthmian Football League in 1974/75, under the management of another local man Micky Lennon. In 1976/77 the club won the Isthmian League Division Two Championship by sixteen points and then had a five-season spell in the Premier Division during the late seventies and early eighties. It then enjoyed another much more successful spell in the Premier Division during the nineties under the Chairmanship of Phil Wallace and the managerial expertise of Bob Makin. That sadly ended in relegation at the end of the 1999/2000 season under the then new Chairman Danny Hunter who remains our Chairman to this day. However, the club did bounce back immediately from that disappointment and once again gained promotion to the Isthmian League Premier Division, as Isthmian League Division One Champions in 2000/01. Following the Football Association restructuring of non-league football in 2004, Boreham Wood competed for the first time in

the Southern Football League, playing in Division One East for two seasons. Winning the championship in 2005/06 the club was promoted again and returned to the Isthmian League Premier Division for the 2006/07 season. Alongside the championship success in the 2005/06 season the club went on an incredible run in the FA Trophy, reaching the SemiFinals. We are very proud to say that, at present, we are still the lowest ranked team to have reached the last four of that prestigious tournament. The 2013/14 season ended in cup success, with a Herts Senior Cup triumph defeating local rivals Bishops Stortford on penalties in the final. Another poor start in our league campaign, however, meant the club had a long relegation battle on its hands for the majority of the season but a strong finish saw us end up in 13th place. Another cup run saw us again reach the First Round proper of the FA Cup, and that culminated in us holding Football League One side Carlisle United to a 0-0 draw at Meadow Park. The replay ended in heartbreak, though, as we led 1-0, only to miss a penalty before two late goals saw us bow out of the competition 2-1. In 2013, we got the go ahead to build a brand new 870-seater West Stand. The project was finally completed in May 2014 at a cost of around three quarters of a million pounds. The stand was officially opened by Mr Arsene Wenger in front of a bumper crowd of 3,400, in a specially arranged friendly against an Arsenal First Team on Saturday 19th July 2014. The 2014/15 season was, at the time, the most successful in Boreham Wood Football Club’s history. After leading the Conference South for the majority of the season, a controversial defeat at

THE OPPOSITION

eventual League Champions Bromley cost us the title and so we took our place in the end of season Play-Offs. After playing magnificently to beat Havant & Waterlooville 2-0 away from home, and then drawing 2-2 at home in a two-legged Semi-Final, we faced the then big spending and strongly fancied Whitehawk Football Club at Meadow Park in front of a partisan 2,200 crowd. A Lee Angol set piece put us ahead early in the second half before a late Whitehawk penalty levelled proceedings. However, a Junior Morias goal in the first minute of extra time proved to be the winner and sent the club into raptures and the town into delirium. Who could believe it, little Boreham Wood with the lowest average attendance in the league had deservedly achieved promotion to the top tier of NonLeague football for the very first time in our then 67-year history! The 2015/16 season was undoubtedly a historic season for the Wood with us competing at the top table of non-league football for the very first time in the newly named National League. It was, though, no fairy-tale opening season at that level against much stronger opposition. In fact, it proved a very difficult one just to survive and, apart from our opening day 3-1 win against Halifax, and the odd big win against the likes of Tranmere Rovers, we struggled to compete with the bigger clubs. By the October we had lost our very successful long-standing manager Ian Allinson to his increased work commitments. We had replaced him with Allinson’s experienced, but young, assistant manager Luke Garrard who was just 30-years of age and we continued to struggle and adjust to football at that level and faced a relegation battle that took us to the very last game of the season. The final three league games of the campaign will long live in the memory as it saw us beat Aldershot away 2-1, Guiseley at home 1-0 and then Welling United 3-0 away. That end of season turnaround finally secured our place in the National League Premier and sent our Chairman, Manager, staff, dressing room and supporters into raptures. The following season, 2016/17, saw the club improve further, with an 11th place National League finish but the best was still to come one year later. During that 2017/18 season the club finally realised two ambitions, the first of which was to beat a Football League club in the FA Cup. That happened on Saturday, November 4, 2017 with a 2-1 victory over famous FA Cup winners Blackpool. Going a goal down with under half an hour left did not suggest that history was about to be made but an equaliser from Blair Turgott paved the way for Dan Holman to secure his place in the club’s history books with a very late winner. That would have been the highlight of any normal season, but 2017/18 was anything but that for Boreham Wood FC as a great run of league form ended with an amazing 4th place finish in the National League. That meant yet another appearance in the Play-Offs and this time in the new format where six clubs were involved. In the eliminator round we beat AFC Fylde 2-1 in a hard-fought game but suffered a series of nightmare injuries, losing three key players before and during the game and putting them out of the remaining Play-Off matches. We then faced Sutton United away just three days later, without those three key players. Despite this, a stunning performance led to a 3-2 win against the odds with Angelo Balanta and Michael Folivi writing their names into Wood folklore. When the nerve wracking period of injury time ended, those present celebrated the impossible dream – Boreham Wood were going to play at Wembley Stadium! The second lifetime ambition of many at the club was to be realised in the same dramatic season as the first.

A place in the Football League was at stake but it was not to be, losing 2-1 to Tranmere Rovers. However, the memory of the day, the walk down Wembley Way and the sheer ecstasy of the Wood faithful celebrating Bruno Andrade’s equaliser will live long in the memory. Seeing over 4,000 passionate supporters in the Wembley stands will be a moment to cherish for everyone connected with the club. A difficult season was to follow the play-off disappointment with a 20th place finish, however we were on hand to crash the play-off party once again. The 2019/20 campaign was another spectacle for a multitude of reasons, both good and bad. The COVID-19 pandemic kicked off and had a severe impact on the world, forcing football clubs to play their games behind closed doors which proved to be most detrimental to lower leagues clubs. Despite this, it would still prove to be an enjoyable season, as a much improved 5th place finish allowed entry into the play-offs for a second time in three seasons and another attempt at making history. After getting past Halifax in the elimination round we faced Harrogate in the semi-final, with a narrow defeat in an empty stadium to the eventual winners. Similarly to the first play-off disappointment, we were unable to match these heights in the following campaign, although history was still made. A comfortable 3-0 win over Canvey Island saw the Wood go one better than in 2018 and reach the third round of the FA Cup for the first time. Championship outfit Millwall awaited, with the Lions’ league position of 17th making them the Wood’s highest ranked opponent. This was to be the end of the road for the cup run with a 2-0 defeat in an empty Meadow Park, but it was a memorable day nonetheless. Our Chairman Danny Hunter can proudly claim that he has overseen our rise through both the Ryman Leagues, the Conference South and into the National League where, in our fourth season, we are regarded as an established club at that level, the pinnacle of non-league football. During our Chairman’s tenure, he has continued to invest or raise over £14 million, to greatly modernise our current infrastructure, our player recruitment, our ground and facility, which has improved the football club hugely and enhanced every fan’s matchday experience when they visit our Meadow Park home. In 2017 he secured further investment of £1.8 million building a new training facility, laying a new DESSO pitch of Premier League quality, installing new floodlights and dugouts. Our facilities are now 90% utilised on a daily basis, 52 weeks of the year. The club houses the largest sports education programme in the whole country, which has now been established for well over a decade. It is a programme that boasts over 600 scholar/students for the next academic year and 2018/19 season. Optimism in our future has long returned to Meadow Park and we hope it will now lead to greater home support, greater sponsorship and, of course, further investment as we continue to progress. After the incredible infrastructure overhaul and huge facility investment in recent years, the club has never looked in better shape. We now have the excitement of another National League season to enjoy and the future of Boreham Wood Football Club has never looked brighter throughout our 70-year history.

MANAGER

LUKE GARRARD Luke started his career as a YTS at Swindon Town, making his full professional debut at 18-years-old against Oldham Athletic on 26th April 2003. He went on to make 17 appearances for the Robins before brief spells at Bishop’s Stortford, Boreham Wood and Northwood. Luke later joined AFC Wimbledon in March 2006. A cult hero with Wimbledon’s fans, he made over 100 appearances for the club, mainly as a right-back but also occasionally in the centre of midfield. In November 2008, Garrard tore his cruciate ligament during training which kept him out for the rest of that season. From the start of the 2009-10 season, he made only occasional appearances for the Wombles, which saw him re-join the Wood in January 2010. Luke couples his role as First Team Manager at Meadow Park with his role as the Academy Manager. Luke was originally an Academy Coach at the Club in 2008, before being promoted to Academy Director in 2012. Luke was then appointed Ian Allinson’s Assistant Manager in 2013, a position he held for two-and-a-half-years. Upon Ian’s Departure in October 2015, Luke was appointed as the

First Team Manager, becoming the youngest boss in all of England’s top five division’s. His first game in charge was a 1-1 draw away with Guiseley. Luke would steer the Wood away from the relegation zone in the club’s inaugural season in the National League. The side clinched survival on the last game of the season away to already relegated Welling United with a comprehensive 3-0 victory. Luke’s stock has further risen in the following seasons, having taken the Wood to Wembley for the first time in their history back in 2017/18. The side achieved their highest ever National League finish of 4th position, and reached the play-off final against Tranmere Rovers, narrowly losing 2-1. Garrard maintained the Wood’s National League status in the 2018/19 season, finishing 8 points above the relegation zone in 20th, before mounting another play-off push during a very disrupted 2019/20 campaign with the season being curtailed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A 5th placed finish on points-pergame set up a play-off eliminator match at home to FC Halifax Town which Wood won 2-1 before losing to eventual play-off promotion winners Harrogate Town in the semi-finals 1-0.

JOSH REES REES JOINED THE WOOD LAST SUMMER Rees scored seven goals from midfield in 49 appearances for the Clarets, before joining Bromley a year later despite interest from higher leagues. He was a part of the team that reached the FA Trophy final at Wembley Stadium and despite losing on penalties, as well as falling short in their attempt to finish in a play-off spot, it was a superb individual season for Rees who notched 20 goals in all competitions. A move to the Football League finally came to fruition with League One side Gillingham, however this was shortlived with a return to Bromley after just a season. Rees then joined Aldershot ahead of the 2020/21 season, where he scored 12 goals in 39 appearances, before opting to join up with Luke Garrard at Meadow Park in the summer of 2021

GUS MAFUTA MAFUTA JOINED BOREHAM WOOD IN 2020 Following a two-year stint with the Ammies Mafuta was snapped up by fellow league competitors Hartlepool United ahead of the 2019/20 season where he made over 30 appearances in a curtailed season, notching three goals during his time at the Club. After a single season with the Pools, Mafuta signed a two-year contract with Boreham Wood FC ahead of the 2020/21 season.

frankie raymond RAYMOND JOINED THE WOOD ON A TWO-YEAR DEAL Frankie Raymond joined the Wood on a two-year deal from league rivals Bromley in the summer. Following his release from Reading having come through the club’s youth academy, Raymond was picked up by Gillingham for a brief spell before dropping into the National League South with Eastbourne Borough. It was here that he began to receive his first experience of regular first team football, making 61 appearances over a two-year period. His form at Priory Lane earned him a move back to the Football League, spending three years with Dagenham & Redbridge.

connor smith THIS IS SMITH’S SECOND SPELL AT THE WOOD Smith spent a season with Yeovil Town before dropping to the National League for his first spell with Boreham Wood. After signing for Billericay Town, he enjoyed loans with Kingstonian and King’s Langley before signing to Wealdstone and was a part of the side who won promotion to the National League in 2019/20. A return to the Wood soon came calling where he acts as player-coach.

Let’s face it, the old terrace wasn’t great and wasn’t used by too many people, but when it was used, it did add significantly to the atmosphere at The Hive London. I suspect a lot of people, like my wife and I, preferred the great view and extra facilities of the Legends stand. However, a recent survey of our members showed that 33% of those who responded said the lack of standing at The Hive London put them off and, maybe surprisingly, 58% of respondents said they’d rather stand. The latter seems quite contradictory to the fact that the terrace wasn’t used by that many people. Is it a case of a little bit of nostalgia creeping in, rather than actually wanting to stand? Or, would a better terrace, maybe with a bar available, entice more people to use a terrace, especially if the price point was lower. There certainly seems to be demand for a better terrace ‘product’.

We cannot urge supporters enough to become a member. If you haven’t already, head to www.bfcsa1926.com where you can sign up. If you do have questions, suggestions or issues you wish to raise with us, you can contact us via social media (@BFCSA1926) or via email on hello@bfcsa1926.com

Standing on the terraces at Underhill was all me, my wife and my Dad did, until the South Stand was built. Whether that was the North or North West terrace, the ‘Popular’ side or the old ‘West Bank’, ironically on the south side of the ground. With a large crowd it was a great atmosphere and the view of the action somewhat mixed. There’s no doubt that The Hive London needs a better atmosphere but its facilities are light years ahead of Underhill. Has the lack of a terrace this season impacted attendances downwards? Based on the attendances from three years ago, before Covid-19, crowds this season are slightly up so it seems likely that it hasn’t. Maybe though, the excellent community work being done by the club is the reason attendances look stable or a little higher? Perhaps a terrace would have added a hundred or so to the average, we’ll never know now. All we can do is look forward to the future, the exact design of the South Stand and also changes to the East Stand are not finalised yet, we believe. Hopefully the club will be able to update us soon. BFCSA Chairman Mark Whitelegg

Let’s hope for three points against Boreham Wood today!

HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH boreham wood

HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH

boreham wood The Bees and Boreham Wood have met on nine occasions in competitive matches, excluding games in the Herts Senior Cup. The first meeting was as recent as Boxing Day 2018.The sides have already met three times this season before today, in both the Emirates FA Cup and Buildbase FA Trophy, and at Meadow Park in the league. Seven meetings between the sides have been in the Vanarama National League. Of the nine meetings, five have been drawn and the others have been victories for the Wood. There have been 16 goals in total and no Barnet player has scored more than once. Tyrone Marsh, who scored a hattrick in the Trophy meeting in December, has scored four times for Boreham Wood in this derby game. Bradley Ash (now with Weymouth) and Kabongo Tshimanga (now at Chesterfield) have both scored twice. Harry Taylor has played for the Bees seven times in games against the Wood and Ephron Mason-Clark has appeared six times.

as a substitute for Boreham Wood in 2020/21. Inih Effiong, Byron Harrison, Callum Reynolds and Mauro Vilhete, who all formerly represented Boreham Wood (Vilhete on loan), subsequently played for Barnet against the Wood (Reynolds four times). Apart from Coulthirst, three other ex-Bees have played for the Wood against Barnet. They are Tom Champion (five times), Krystian Pearce (once) and David Stephens (five times). Among the others to play for both sides, but not in this fixture, are Jamie Turley (the current Barnet captain, of course), Simeon Akinola, Cliff Akurang, Conor Clifford, Jack Connors, Sam Cox, Harry Crawford, Darren Currie, Joe Devera, Clovis Kamdjo, Charlie MacDonald, Steve O’Neill, Omer Riza, Terry Robbins and Dean Samuels.

The highest attendance for this fixture was 2,087 on New Year’s Day 2019 at The Hive London. The two league games last season were both played without spectators due to Covid-19. Until the most recent game at Meadow Park, Bees’ fans had always outnumbered Wood supporters, home and away, when fans were admitted. The most recent league game between the sides, a goalless draw, was on January 2nd this year. The Bees team that day was: Aston Oxborough, Jordan Thomas, Jamie Turley, Ben Richards-Everton, Sam Beard, Harry Taylor, Sam Woods, Mitch Brundle, Rob Hall (Wes Fonguck), Adam Marriott (Serhat Tasdemir), Mason Bloomfield. Shaq Coulthirst (who recently joined Billericay Town) is the only player to have featured for both the Bees and the Wood in this derby game - twice for Barnet in 2018/19 and then

CLASSIC ENCOUNTER WITH

THE WOOD

The first ever league meeting between the Bees and Boreham Wood was on Boxing Day 2018 at Meadow Park. The Wood took all three points, thanks to a goal in the 88th minute. It proved to be John Still’s last game in charge of the Bees, as he left the Club two days later. Barnet had backing from a contingent of 977 fans for this fixture. It remains the Bees’ best away following in the league since the final day of the 2012/13 season against Northampton Town. The Bees supporters saw a hard-fought battle, but with few clear chances for either team. An early chance fell to Femi Ilesanmi, but his shot on the turn went way over the crossbar. The Bees’ first opportunity saw Elliot Johnson cross for Shaq Coulthirst, but his glanced header went tamely wide. A Jack Taylor shot from the edge of the box was comfortably held by Ryan Huddart in the Wood goal.

by the Wood ‘keeper and a scuffed shot by Charlee Adams missed the target. Boreham Wood’s best chances in the second half came first when Ugwu got his head to the ball from a corner, but his effort was off target. Then, a shot from the edge of the Barnet box struck another Wood forward and went for a goal-kick. A draw looked the likely outcome, until Boreham Wood made the breakthrough with two minutes of normal time remaining. The home team attacked down their right. The ball was delivered into the Barnet box for Shakes, who took one touch and knocked the ball sideways for substitute Bradley Ash. He struck his shot across goal past Cousins’ left hand and into the Bees’ net. Boreham Wood: Ryan Huddart, Danny Woodards (Sorba Thomas), Femi Ilesanmi, Mark Ricketts, David Stephens, Ricky Shakes, Tom Champion, Kieran Murtagh, Jamal Fyfield, Gozie Ugwu, Justin Shaibu (Bradley Ash). Bees: Mark Cousins, Cheye Alexander, Callum Reynolds, Craig Robson, Elliot Johnson, Dan Sweeney, Charlee Adams, Jack Taylor, Wes Fonguck (Medy Elito), Byron Harrison, Shaq Coulthirst (Jack Barham). Attendance: 1,894.

On the half-hour mark, the Wood won possession from Callum Reynolds, but when the ball came to Ricky Shakes, he fired well over. Boreham Wood managed a better effort when Gozie Ugwu met Kieran Murtagh’s cross with his head, only for Mark Cousins to pull off a great reaction save to see the sides go in level at the break. Most of the second half was a series of half-chances. In the early stages, Barnet pressed forward, first through Coulthirst on the left, his final ball finding a defender, and then through Cheye Alexander on the right, but his shot bent wide of goal. Later a cross from Taylor was gathered easily CLASSIC ENCOUNTER WITH the WOOD

ON THIS Day

&

ON THIS day EIGHT YEARS AGO (2014) The Bees lost 1-0 away to Kidderminster Harriers in what is now the Vanarama National League. The attendance was 1,950. Harriers finished the season in seventh place, immediately above the Bees.

CURRENTLY The Bees’ 6-0 victory over Dover Athletic completed their second double of the season (having previously beaten Aldershot Town twice). It also set a host of records. The win over Dover was the first time that the Bees had: •

14 YEARS AGO (2008) The Bees beat Chester City 3-0 at Underhill in a fourthtier game. All three goals were in the second-half. Albert Adomah (now with Queens Park Rangers, having played over 100 games for each of Barnet, Bristol City, Middlesbrough and Aston Villa) opened the scoring and that was followed by a brace from Cliff Akurang. The crowd was 1,663.

19 YEARS AGO (2003) Morecambe and Barnet shared the spoils in a game at Morecambe. The score for this National League game was 1-1 and the Bees’ goal came from Wayne Purser. A total of 1,667 fans saw the action. The Shrimps finished the season in second place and so made the play-offs. It was the first time that play-offs were held in the National League and Morecambe were knocked out at the semi-final stage.

25 YEARS AGO (1997) Swansea City beat Barnet 1-0 at Underhill in the fourth tier. The crowd was 1,881. The Swans finished the season in fifth place (losing in the play-off final at Wembley to Northampton Town) and the Bees were placed 15th.

28 YEARS AGO (1994) The Bees lost 3-0 to Fulham at Craven Cottage in a third-tier game (it was Barnet’s only season at that level). The crowd was 3,326. The Cottages ended the season in 21st and Barnet 24th, so both were relegated. Fulham are currently top of the Championship.

70 YEARS AGO (1952) Barnet lost at Hoddesdon Town 3-2 in the semi-final of the Herts Senior Cup, then a first-team fixture. The Bees’ goals were scored by Steve Blackburn and Ron Phipps.

Won by six goals or more and without conceding in a firstteam competitive game since they beat Blackpool 7-0 in November 2000 at Underhill, in a fourth-tier game; Won by six goals in a first-team competitive game since they beat Farnborough Town 7-1 at home in March 2005, in a Vanarama National League game (coming back after going behind); Scored five in one half of a first-team competitive game since they beat Morecambe 5-1 in September 2004, in a National League game (coming back after going behind and with all the Barnet goals coming after half-time); Scored six in a competitive game since they beat Tring Athletic 6-1 away in November 2012, in the Hertfordshire Senior Cup (not a first-team game); Scored six in a first-team game since they won 6-2 against Crystal Palace in July 2019, in a pre-season friendly; and Two players (Reece Grego-Cox and Adam Marriott) scoring a brace in one match since Albert Adomah and Cliff Akurang did so in a 4-1 win against Shrewsbury Town in March 2008, in a fourth-tier game.

Two Barnet players scored their debut goal in the league for the club in the victory over Dover - Reece Grego-Cox and Sam Woods. A total of 16 players have now scored for the Bees in first-team competitive games this season, more than in the past two seasons, but two less than in 2018/19. Today is the fourth meeting between the Bees and Boreham Wood this season. It is the first time the Bees have met a team four times in a season since they played Swindon Town on four occasions in 2011/12, twice in the league and twice in the area semi-final of the Football League Trophy. This season is the first in which Barnet have met one team three times at home in a season since Farnborough Town played at Underhill on three occasions in 2004/05: in the league, the FA Cup and the FA Trophy. ALDERSHOT TOWN AWAY POSTCARD NORTHWOOD AWAY POSTCARD Last Saturday we had a short trip for the game against Aldershot Town. Due to it being quite far The next round of the Middlesex FA Senior Challenge Cup took us to Northwood. The game had been postponed from Leeds, my parents came to stay with me in London the night before. We set off around twice due to a waterlogged pitch, but Tuesday was a dry day and the game was finally going ahead. After work, I 11:00 on Saturday morning with the intention of getting lunch before the game. We arrived in got the tube to Northwood Hills and had a short walk to the ground from there. It’s quite hidden away so at one Aldershot around 12:30 and found parking up by the away end. As we were heading into the point I was worried that I was trespassing! Thankfully, I made it in one piece by about 19:00 and made my way town, we bumped into fellow Bees Mark and Adam who joined us in Wetherspoons for a few into the Clubhouse. I had a drink pre-game and a catch up with a few of the other Barnet fans who had made it. A drinks and lunch. We headed back to the ground around 14:00 and as we arrived, we were told few of us went out to the pitch just before kick-off having the chance to chat to a few members of the coaching the usual away end was shut so we had parked all the way up the hill for nothing! We went staff before the game. As the teams came out, we took our place behind the goal we were shooting into. inside and joined other fans on the away terrace ready for kick-off. We had a big chance really early on, but Ben Richards-Everton just missed the ball. We had some good balls going We got off to a great start as just five minutes into the game, Adam Marriott gave us the lead into the box but didn’t offer much threat on the end of it and their goalkeeper dealt with everything well. Unfortuwhen he got on the end of a lovely cross from Rob Hall. 11 minutes later, we doubled our nately, just before half time Harry Taylor had to go off injured but hopefully it’s nothing too serious. Jamie Turley advantage with a super strike from Sam Beard into the roof of the net. We carried on the half came on to replace him and we had a few more decent balls in the box before half-time. The first half was pretty strongly with some brilliant chances and went into half-time 2-0 up. At the interval I went for one-sided with Northwood struggling to create many chances at the other end but we went into half time 0-0. the usual hot chocolate but shout-out to Aldershot who gave me cream and a flake on the top After the break a few of us walked round to stand behind the other goal in the hope we would see some action in too! The second-half started very well too with Adam Marriott getting his second of the the second half. Thankfully our wish was granted just nine minutes into the half when Reece Grego-Cox’s initial afternoon eight minutes in. Aldershot had a few more chances but Harry Taylor made some shot was deflected into Adam Marriott’s path who scored. Then five minutes later Marriott did it again, scoring excellent tackles to stop any danger. We carried on attacking and were unlucky not to add to this time from a yard out after Rob Hall’s free kick hit the bar. There was a nervy moment when the referee our tally. Four minutes were added at the end of the game and unfortunately Aldershot got one seemed like he wasn’t going to allow it for offside, but the linesman had his flag down and luckily the goal stood. back in the 93rd minute, but the whistle blew soon after and we had our three points. The boys After scoring our goals we had more about us and were playing some lovely football on the floor. Ryan De came over to a lot of well-deserved praise from the fans who were in good voice all afternoon. Havilland, Serhat Tasdemir and Ephron Mason-Clark all had close shots that were saved by their ‘keeper. Despite our efforts, Northwood stopped us scoring anymore and the game finished 2-0. Feeling relieved that we didn’t My parents and I walked back up the massive hill where we had parked and set off back to have to endure penalties, we applauded the boys off the pitch. London where we arrived around 18:00. It made a nice change as every time we’ve been to Aldershot before, it’s been a trip back up to Leeds! We had a takeaway and got to enjoy a Us fans headed out of the ground (the scary dark path was less scary when I was with people) and James and Saturday night in London to top off a brilliant day in Aldershot. Janice were lovely enough to offer me a lift to the station - meaning I was home before 23:00. After a slow first 45 minutes, we played well in the second half and thoroughly deserved the win. Now we head to the final to take on Brentford B. Let’s hope we can come back with some silverware!

WHAT’S THE Buzz

WHAT’S THE Buzz Following the dismissal of Kenny Jackett towards the end of last month, Leyton Orient have appointed Richie Wellens as their new manager. Until his sacking on 22nd February, Orient had failed to win in their previous 14 games, since their win over Swindon Town on 7th December - a run that left them in 20th place in League Two, four points above the relegation zone on 35 points. Wellens previously managed Oldham Athletic, Swindon Town, Salford City and Doncaster Rovers, winning the EFL Trophy in the 2019/20 with Salford. During his playing career he spent time at Blackpool, Oldham, Doncaster, Leicester City, Ipswich Town, Shrewsbury Town, Salford and Macclesfield Town. Last Wednesday saw a non-league cup match in Sunderland break the record for the longest penalty shootout in football history. This shootout saw 54 spot kicks taken, before Washington finally won the shootout 25-24. The Ernest Armstrong Memorial Cup first round tie ended 3-3 and had an attendance of 40. The Northern League Division Two sides beat the previous record of 48 penalties, set by KK Palace and Civics in a Namibian Cup tie in 2005. In October 2021, another tie came close to breaking the record, when AFC Wulfrunians beat Lane Head 1918 after 44 kicks were taken.

Swindon Town announced their plans to buy their County Ground stadium last week. The ground is currently owned by Swindon Borough Council, who are set to meet tomorrow to make a decision on the sale. The reported deal on the table will see a joint venture between the club and a supporters group purchase the stadium for £2.3 million, with each owning 50% each. This comes after a similar deal that took place in March 2019 was approved, but fell through due to a separate issue that involved a legal dispute about who owned the club. There are also multi-million pound plans to redevelop parts of the ground.

WHAT’S THE Buzz

WHAT’S THE Buzz

League Two side Colchester United have revealed that they will be donating the entirety of their gate receipt of their match next week to help the humanitarian aid efforts in Ukraine. United are to play Forest Green Rovers next Monday evening, with all tickets to the match costing £10. Part of their efforts has also seen them apply to the EFL to gain permission to wear a special edition kit, in yellow and blue colours in the style of Ukraine’s national team. The club have pledged for anyone who has already purchased a ticket, e.g. season ticket holders, to “make up the difference” to support the campaign, with any complimentary ticket holders being asked to pay the £10 fee.

Another club in the news this week buying back their ground is Cambridge United. The League One side are said to have already agreed a deal to buy back the freehold of the Abbey Stadium, having been forced to sell it in December 2004 to help raise funds for the club to stay in existence. That deal did help the club to survive but could not prevent them from being relegated to the Conference that season. USA-based club owner Paul Barry, who is the majority shareholder in the club, has agreed the deal to buy back the ground from Grosvenor Property UK, who have been landlords since 2010.

The newly renovated Riverside Stand at Craven Cottage is to be reopened this summer, Fulham have announced. The stand will be fully completed in 2023, with construction having been started in 2019 and been planned since 2011. The redeveloped stand and will increase the ground’s capacity by 3,900, from 25,700 to 29,600. The work was expected to be completed sooner, but was delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic. The opening of the stand will also coincide with the opening of Fulham Pier. Fulham are currently top of the Championship by 14 points with 13 matches to go, and are hoping that the new stand will be used for Premier League fixtures next season.

THE BEES EARNED THREE POINTS IN A DOMINANT DISPLAY AT THE HIVE LONDON – WINNING 6-0 AGAINST DOVER ATHLETIC IN THE VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE. The game started quickly with both sides having chances early on as TJ Bramble’s long-range strike was caught by Aston Oxborough shortly before Adam Marriott drove his effort over the crossbar from range. Dean Brennan’s side opened the scoring in the 6th minute as Marriott found the run of Reece Grego-Cox down the left wing with a well-weighted pass. The Bees’ No. 39 cut back inside and beat his defender before curling the ball into the top right corner beyond Adam Parkes’ reach. The hosts continued to press and went very close to doubling their lead when Marriott found Mason-Clark in the box who headed the ball against the inside of the post before it got cleared away. Marriott looked to score one of his own moments later when his flicked header from Ryan De Havilland’s corner was pushed away by Parkes. The Bees continued to create chances in the first half with the next coming in the 28th minute through Grego-Cox who was denied by the Whites’ goalie after Rob Hall laid the ball off to him on the edge of the box. Marriott scored the Bees’ second of the afternoon just after the restart as Hall’s corner towards the back post was headed back across goal by Ben Richards-Everton to Marriott who nodded in from close-range. The constant pressure paid off again as Marriott had his second goal of the day two minutes later after Grego-Cox’s curling effort was tipped onto the post by Parkes. The Bees’ leading goalscorer reacted first to the rebound and headed it into an empty net to score his ninth of the season. Dean Brennan’s side had a chance to further extend the advantage in the 57th minute after Ephron Mason-Clark was

Mason-Clark stepped up for the spot kick but had his shot towards the bottom corner pushed around the post by the Dover stopper. A fourth goal for the hosts came in the 67th minute when Ryan De Havilland’s corner into the middle of the box was flicked up by Richards-Everton to allow Reiss Greenidge to turn the ball home from a yard out.
