WRITES

Darren Currie

Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to The Hive for this afternoon’s match with FC Halifax Town. Firstly I want to wish all of our supporters a Happy New Year and I hope you enjoyed the festive period. I also want to extend a warm welcome to the players, staff and supporters of our visitors this afternoon. Thanks to those of you who travelled to Aldershot and Boreham Wood over the last week, it was great to see you out in your numbers cheering us on. They were two very hard fought games and there are plenty of positives to take from those two draws against sides who are strong on home soil. I really appreciate your commitment in following us over the festive period and hopefully we can keep this little run of form going at the start of what feels like a very important year for our football club. We come into this game in good form and we have looked strong defensively over the previous matches which is really pleasing. But on the flip side, albeit we haven’t scored in the last two games but we have also scored a good number of goals in this little run we have going. It’s vital that we get ourselves on the score-sheet this afternoon and I have every faith in those boys in the final third. We obviously lost out in the game up at Halifax, so there is that little bit of edge to put things right on home soil this afternoon. The game up there was a frustrating one

because we had chances to win the game but defensively we were sloppy that afternoon and in the end we were punished. Plenty has happened since then and both teams sit near each other in the table, so I am sure it’ll be a really close encounter today. They are a good side, but we are in a good place at the minute so I know we are capable of getting the job done in front of our fans. The home form is going to be vital in 2020 and as I have said in the past we all have a part to play in making The Hive a difficult place to come. The players need to get themselves on the front foot and put in performances that get you excited. Then in turn you can get right behind the boys, because it does make a massive difference and we can build momentum with a good atmosphere in the stadium. So keep backing us and hopefully we can deliver our objectives for this season. I am passionate about this Club and I am determined to make a success out of this year.

Thanks for your continued support and enjoy the game!

FOOTBALL CLUB HALIFAX TOWN

OPPOSITION

History Following the demise of Halifax Town AFC at the end of the 2007-2008 season, a new Club was born and re-formed just in time for the 2008-2009 season. The new Football Club was placed in Level Four of the Non-League pyramid, taking a place in the Northern Premier League, in Unibond North One and called FC Halifax Town. Time was short and the new Club was faced with appointing a new Manager and bringing a team together from scratch in only five weeks. Jim Vince, a coach in the Crewe Alexandra Football Academy working closely with Crewe Manager Dario Grady and a former Manager of Witton Albion in the Unibond Premier Division, achieving two consecutive second places in the previous two seasons, was appointed. Pre –season friendlies were hastily arranged and the first ever game by the Club was played at Tamworth, when 22 trialists made appearances for the Club, trying to catch the eye of the new Manager. The first ever official game for FC Halifax Town was a home game against 12

Bamber Bridge at the Shay Stadium. For the Halifax fans, it was an emotionally charged game; as they were so relieved to see their beloved ‘Shaymen’ play a real game of football again, after all the heartache of previous. Over 1,500 fans attended the game, watching a team that barely knew one another. Perhaps with a possible sign of things to come, the Club went in at half-time 0-0, but ended up losing the game 3-0. Not the best of starts! Disappointingly, the team had a mediocre first season and for whatever reason, Jim Vince struggled to get things going with any real conviction on the pitch, culminating in a far from satisfactory 8th place, even missing out on a Play-Off place. A new Club and striving for stability and continuity, reluctantly the Board had to make a change, with Jim Vince leaving the position prior to the end of the season and player, Nigel Jemson taking the club though to the end of the season. Players who have gone on to play at a higher level include from that season include, Junior Brown in League Two at Fleetwood Town, Colin Daniel a loanee who is now playing in League Two also with Mansfield Town and Gavin Rothery at Guiseley.

THE HISTORY

Shay Stadium. In front of over three thousand fans, the afternoon was electric and Halifax won the game comfortably, 4 nil and taking over the leadership of the division. The following Monday evening was a tough away game at Curzon Ashton who were also in the playoff places and Halifax recorded a stunning 5 nil away win. From then on, momentum carried the team to its first promotion as Champions, with 100 points and over 100 goals. A step up to the newly sponsored EvoStik Premier division. With some more astute signings and the average age of the team being reduced, Halifax tried to emulate the previous season. Again, the Club achieved promotion and the Championship, with five games to spare, missing the 100 points by just two and again scoring over 100 goals. As in the previous season, the Club just missed out on the 1st Round proper of the FA Cup, losing to Wrexham in 2009-10 to a 97th piledriver and 2010-11, to a 1 nil defeat against Mansfield Town.

An early appointment was made for the 2009-2010 season, with Neil Aspin joining from Conference North side, Harrogate Town. Despite dropping two divisions he was confident of a bright future for the Football Club and was ready for the challenge of moving the club further up the pyramid.

A nice recognition for the Club was goalkeeper Jonathan Hedge being called in to the England ‘C’ squad as he had also been chosen in the previous season. The only blot on a wonderful season was the emotional loss of Neil’s assistant Trevor Storton, who sadly died after a long battle with cancer. He was with the team nearly all the way, passing away just before our promotion was secured. Promotion was a fitting tribute to a wonderful man.

A mixture of new recruits, players known to him and some already involved with the Club from the previous season, he set about trying to establish a successful team. As we all know, achieving promotion from any division is a huge challenge and the early pace setters were Lancaster City, scoring goals for fun with striker Jordan Connerton hitting a rich vein of form, gaining him a move to Crewe Alexandra and seemingly winning games, no matter what. At one stage in to the second half of the season, they held a twelve point lead over the Shaymen, although Halifax had lost a lot of games through postponement due to the weather.

So, 2011-2012 saw the arrival in the Football Conference and the Blue Square Bet North division. Another tough challenge, made all the harder with the departure of star striker Jamie Vardy, after only four games of the new season. Jamie making a move to then Conference Premier, Fleetwood Town and soon to be Champions, making their way in to the Football League for the first time in their history. Jamie shortly made a second move to Championship Club, Leicester City becoming the first £1m non-league player.

Fighting their way through the backlog, the ultimate period in the second season and the moment at which Halifax moved in to pole position in the league, was an eventful three match period spread over six days, in the final third of the season. Garforth away on a Thursday night, two minutes to go the Shaymen losing 3-1. A goal for the Shaymen, 3-2. The referee announces four extra minutes and in the 91st minute another goal, 3-3. Everyone was delighted, equalising so late and hopefully securing an unlikely point out from the game. What drama was to follow, with the last kick of the game Richard Marshall thirty yards away from goal, produced an exquisite lob to beat the keeper for a 4-3 win. Despite Lancaster winning on the same night, they were told the Shaymen had lost, so what a shock when they got back on their coach, only to find Halifax had won so late in the game.

Despite that set-back on the pitch, the Shaymen battled their way to a play-off position, to meet Gainsborough Trinity. In the away first leg, a disastrous start being two nil down in the first twenty minutes and seeing very little of the ball. Two Lee Gregory goals, one just before half time and one midway through the second half brought the Shaymen back in to the tie for the second leg. In front of over three thousand fans in the second leg, Town could not turn their superiority in to goals and lost to a set piece, one nil. The season was also highlighted by finally achieving the FA Cup First Round Proper and what a draw. League One leaders Charlton Athletic who were to go up as Champions

and the game also being chosen for national live TV broadcast. Managing to stay in the game one nil until the 80th minute was very creditable, but once Danny Lowe was harshly sent-off, the team eventually lost 4 nil. Nevertheless, what a great day and profile for the Club.

Gareth McClelland, Darren Kelly and Jim Harvey all had spells in charge during the 2015/16 season. The season was to be one of mixed emotions as Town were relegated from the National League. A terrible start to the season was then met by a revival under Harvey but the damage was already done.

Understanding the league a little more, Neil Aspin brought in one or two fresh faces for the 2012-2013 campaign and said ‘goodbye’ to some good players, who had helped the Club progress so much. This season in particular was the hardest for the Club since reformation, only due to the number of match cancellations, both home and away for a variety of reasons, but mainly the incredible amount of rain. The fixture backlog and numerous re-arrangements took their toll and Halifax would have to do well, playing so many games a week to secure a play-off spot.

Despite the relegation, The Shaymen made it to Wembley for the first time in their history. FC Halifax Town beat Nantwich Town 6-4 on aggregate to reach the final of the FA Trophy. Grimsby Town were the opponents that day and a early second half goal from Scott McManus was enough to give the Town fans their dream day out in the capital as The Shaymen lifted the FA Trophy. The 2016/17 season saw another manager in charge as Billy Heath took over the coaching duties and was able to guide Town straight back to the National League. Town had finished 3rd in the National League North and were promoted after winning the playoff final against Chorley.

This they did in fifth place and faced a local derby against Guiseley in the semis, who were in the playoffs for the third consecutive season. Chester FC had walked away with the Championship. After a 1 all draw at the Shay Stadium, Halifax managed a two nil deserved win away at Nethermoor, with Gregory and Johnson getting the goals. So to the Final and a long trip to Brackley, who in their first season has done tremendously well and it was going to be a difficult tie.

Heath’s second season in charge did not get off to a good start as Town languished near the bottom of the league. Eventually, the decision was made to part ways with Billy Heath and Neil Young was given the role of caretaker manager until FC Halifax Town’s current manager, Jamie Fullarton, was instated on a permanent basis.

In a tight game perhaps dominated by the Shaymen, Lee Gregory scored the only goal of the game to send the fans in to raptures and earn a place in the Conference Premier division, for the first time in their history. A great achievement in five years with three promotions, but everyone involved with the Club knows this will be a tough campaign and despite that, everyone is up for the challenge and look forward to welcoming everyone to Halifax and the Shay Stadium.

Fullarton managed to save The Shaymen from relegation in 2017/18 as they ended up finishing 16th. In the 2018/19 season, Town had one of the highest clean sheet records but struggled for goals and finished in mid table. However Jamie Fullarton decided to leave the Club in mid July and former Oldham boss Pete Wild is tasked with taking charge for the 2019/20 season.

The following season FC Halifax Town finished 5th in the Skrill Premier and the play-offs beckoned again, this time with the chance of a Wembley final and promotion to the Football League. However despite a 1-0 home win over Cambridge United at the Shay, a 2-0 defeat at the Abbey Stadium saw Cambridge head to Wembley. Last season, Town had a great start to the season and got to the quarter finals of the FA Trophy. However after defeat to Wrexham in the quarter finals, the season petered out and Town finished in mid table. Neil Aspin promised a number of changes over the summer, which he has duly promised. However, just a few games into the season, Aspin departed the Club having been in charge for over 300 games. Aspin’s departure would kickstart the managerial merry-goround that was to come in the next few years.

SAM JOHNSON

FC HALIFAX TOWN TEAM The 24-year-old had two previous loan spells with the Shaymen and was part of the side which won the FA Trophy at Wembley Stadium. Johnson played a major part in Town’s promotion via the Vanarama National League North play-offs in the 2016-17 season. Starting his career with Stoke City’s youth setup, the 6ft 7 goalkeeper joined Port Vale in 2007 where he went onto make 22 league appearances between 2011 and 2017. During his time with Valiants Johnson spent time on loan with: Stafford Rangers, Alfreton Town, Gateshead as well as The Shaymen. Johnson was an ever present for the club in 2018/19 as he kept 19 clean sheets.

Club Captain Brown is in his fourth season with the Shaymen after signing for the club on a free transfer from Chester in 2015. After a slow start for the team the central defender became a rock at the back in the second half of the 2015/16 season. The former Chester FC captain was on the youth books at Manchester City and has also played for Chesterfield, where he scored on his Football League debut in a 2-0 win over Plymouth Argyle. Brown seems to have an eye for goal as he also scored the shoot-out winning penalty against Gateshead in the quarter final of the memorable trophy run two seasons ago. Brown made 41 appearances for the club in 2018/19 scoring two goals.

They lost just two of their opening 11 Fourth Division matches, drawing 1-1 at home to Doncaster watched by 20,501. In the FA Cup, Halifax defeated Scarborough 2-0 and Walsall 2-0 before earning national headlines when Paul Hendrie’s strike clinched a 1-0 third round victory over Manchester City at The Shay. They lost 2-0 at Bolton in the fourth round. Future Republic of Ireland international Mick Kennedy was everpresent, while other favourites included top scorer Franny Firth, Peter Burke, Geoff Hutt, David Evans and John Kilner.

Halifax Town made an impressive return to the Football League in 1998-99. They began life back in the Third Division after a five year absence with a 2-0 victory at Peterborough and Geoff Horsfield scored seven goals in ten games before his record £350,000 move to Fulham in October. Halifax won their next match 4-0 at Scunthorpe, then four successive games to go top of the table with a 1-0 victory at Brighton in November. But they were unable to maintain their promotion challenge, failing to win any of their next seven games. Jamie Paterson was leading marksman as the Shaymen finished tenth in the Third Division.

Geoff Horsfield was leading marksman with 30 goals as Halifax Town stormed to the Conference title in 1997-98. George Mulhall’s side raced to the top of the table, unbeaten in their opening 12 Conference matches, with Horsfield grabbing a hattrick in a 6-1 demolition of Telford. They overcame a 4-0 defeat at Cheltenham to lose just one of their next 13 Conference games, with Horsfield netting another hat-trick against Hereford. The Shaymen lost 4-0 at rivals Rushden & Diamonds, watched by 3,675, but won the title by a nine-point margin. Stars included Brian Kilcline, player-coach Kieran O’Regan and Mark Bradshaw.

Chris Wilder guided Halifax Town to the Conference play-off final in 2005-06. The Shaymen started with a 1-0 defeat at Morecambe but gradually climbed the table, winning 4-0 at home to Tamworth and successive games against Kidderminster, Hereford and Altrincham. They took Rushden & Diamonds to an FA Cup first round replay before losing on penalties and just two defeats in 17 Conference games lifted them to third place by the end of March. John Grant was leading marksman as Halifax qualified for the play-offs in fourth place, beating Grays Athletic 5-4 on aggregate before losing 3-2 to Hereford United in the final.

HOW IT HAPPENED The first chance fell to the Bees as Jack Barham rose highest from a free-kick but his header went just past the post. The opening 20 minutes was a rather quiet affair with both sides showing attacking intent without testing either ‘keeper. The Bees had the better of the opening stages, keeping the ball well and moving it with purpose. The Wood almost took the lead as Kane Smith tried a curling effort from the edge of the box, but it whistled past Scott Loach’s left stick. On half an hour we had the moment of the half as Wes Fonguck danced through before sending his effort onto the corner of the post and crossbar. It was a majestic effort and he was mighty unlucky not to open the scoring. Eight minutes before the break Elliott Johnson tried his luck from 25 yards out and forced Nathan Ashmore into a smart stop as he dived across to push the effort aside. Moments later Fonguck sent Barham through but the striker’s effort from the angle was comfortably stopped by Ashmore. J Taylor then saw a free-kick go wide, as the Bees began to dominate proceedings. Darren Currie’s side went in level at the break but were the better side on a chilly afternoon in Hertfordshire. Into the second half and it started much like the first as both sides looked to stamp their mark on the game but didn’t quite find a killer instinct in the final third. 30

BARNETFC.COM

The only chance of note fell to Wood skipper Mark Ricketts but his volley sailed wide of the Bees goal. The hosts were edging the opening half of the second period without creating anything. The Wood looked the more likely as they looked to protect their nine-game unbeaten run. With 15 minutes left on the clock, J Taylor saw a dipping volley fiz past the post, as Currie’s side looked to change the tide of the game. Up the other end, Loach was called into action as he palmed away Smith’s powerful drive from distance. The teams were locked even as the final 10 minutes approached. With five minutes to go the Bees came close to taking the lead as Mauro Vilhete headed down for Akinola, but the striker’s effort was blocked by an oncoming Wood defender. Vilhete had a golden chance to nick it as added time began, he headed wide from Dunne’s superb cross. It was a massive chance after our number 20 did well to peel away from the Wood back-line. Moments later Tutonda flashed a ball across goal, leaving Ashmore to push away as we piled on the pressure in the dying moments.

Jack Barham Reaction

We caught up with Bees striker Jack Barham after our 0-0 draw with Boreham Wood at Meadow Park on New Year’s Day. On being back in a Barnet shirt “Yeah I’m really pleased, I am happy to be back with the boys now. I feel fitter, sharper, stronger. I had to go out on loan to get some games and show people what I can do.”

On his performance “I thought I did alright today. When it came to me I looked after it, I gave it away a couple of times, but I’m still learning. “But overall I thought I did really well today!”

On his time with Dorking Wanderers “Dorking play a similar way to Barnet, so that actually helped me out. So I’ve learnt a lot. “They play a 3-5-2 and they play football as well, they pass it around. I learnt about getting in the pockets and getting in behind when the time is right. Overall I feel like I have learnt a lot”

On his goals for the new year “Hopefully get us into the play-offs and win those play-offs! Hopefully, I can help the team get back to where they want to be.”

ALDERSHOT TOWN

HOW IT HAPPENED The Bees started strongly at The Ebb Stadium and passed up a couple of opportunities to open the scoring within 8 minutes of kick-off. Jack Taylor at the heart of both opportunities, he teed up James Dunne at the edge of the box, but the latter’s shot was deflected just wide of the post before he floated one just the wrong side of the far stick himself. Harry Taylor was next to go close but his glanced header from a whipped David Tutonda cross scraped the far post, before Dean Rance smashed well high of Scott Loach’s goal moments later - the hosts’ first sight of goal. The Bees best chance of the half came just before half-time as Cheye Alexander put a wonderful cross into the middle of the box. Simeon Akinola got up so well to meet it but could only direct his header straight at Mitch Walker from closerange. Barnet’s dominance continued into the second half and Darren Currie’s side were again unlucky not to go ahead early on. Tutonda smashed an effort goalwards which Walker saved well, however it rebounded off Kodi Lyons-Foster and unfortunately for the Bees, the deflection dropped just the wrong side of the post. 32

Callum Reynolds then rose highest from a corner kick and headed wide of the far post - a golden opportunity to open the scoring. The hosts weren’t without their chances in the second period, however, as Ethan Chislett’s delicate chip from a tight angle pinged off the crossbar before former Bees forward, Mo Bettamer, directed goalwards following a corner kick, but the Bees defensive line hacked well clear as the game headed into the final 20. Chislett found space once again inside the Barnet box and H Taylor did brilliantly well to throw his body in the way and relieve the danger before some Scott Loach heroics denied Chislett for a second time. Neither side could break the deadlock and the ref eventually blew to bring a frustrating 90 minutes to an end.

Last weekend saw former England national team manager Peter Taylor leave Dagenham and Redbridge. The former Southend United, Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur player, who managed the Three Lions for one game back in 2000, was appointed Daggers boss in June 2018. He left the club last weekend, before the midweek round of fixtures, with the East London club sitting in 18th place, two points above the relegation zone. This season has also seen the club be knocked out of the FA Cup at the fourth qualifying round stage by Carshalton Athletic. He guided the side to an 18th place finish last season.

Sutton United captain Jamie Collins has announced that his sides’ game away to Chesterfield today will be his last for the club, as he will be retiring and subsequently taking up a job outside of football. Starting his career in the academy of Watford, he then played for various non league sides including Havant and Waterlooville, Hampton and Richmond Borough and Newport County, before joining then League 2 side Aldershot Town. After just a few months as a Football League player, the defender returned to non league with Forest Green Rovers and Eastleigh, before arriving at Gander Green Lane in 2015, helping United to the National League South title the next summer. The 35 year old has also spent some time as a coach at the south London club.

What’s the Buzz?

Ipswich Town manager Paul Lambert has signed a new deal, which sees him stay at Portman Road until the end of the 2024/25 season. Having originally signed for the club back in October 2018, the 50 year old had 18 months left on his original contract. So far, the former Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers and Wolverhampton Wanderers boss has led the Suffolk side to ten wins and eight draws out of their opening 23 league games, seeing them lie fifth in League 1 going into this weekend, three points off of the automatic promotion places. However, the side have not won any of their last ten games in all competitions, including five draws and three defeats in their last eight league games, including a 5-3 loss to Lincoln City.

Thursday saw a bad start to the new decade for John Sheridan, who was sacked by the club on only the second day of the decade. The former Leeds United, Sheffield Wednesday and Oldham Athletic midfielder was in his second stint as manager of Chesterfield, having previously spent just over three years at the club between the summers of 2009 and 2012, where he won the League 2 title in 2011, claiming the Football League Trophy the following summer. His second spell started last January, with the 55 year old leaving just shy of a year later, with the Spirites sitting in 22nd place in the National League, five points off of safety, having been relegated twice in the past three seasons.

36

BARNETFC.COM

Also leaving his job on just the second day of the decade was Daryl McMahon, who resigned for his post as manager of Macclesfield Town. The 36 year old former Leyton Orient, Stevenage and Boreham Wood midfielder joined the financially troubled club in August, when former manager Sol Campbell left the club. This bad news is another in a series of problems for the Cheshire side, who have recently had several games postponed, received a six point points deduction and have many of their players unhappy, as well as their financial difficulties. Amar Alkahdi, the owner of the League 2 side, has recently said that he is in “advanced negotiations with various third parties” about a possible takeover of the club.

Former Barnsley, Cardiff City and Southend United defender Chris Barker unfortunately passed away on new years day. Aged just 39, the former defender made over 130 appearances for each of those three clubs, as well as smaller spells at Stoke City, Colchester United, Queens Park Rangers and Plymouth Argyle. During his playing career, he only won one major honour, the Second Division playoffs in 2003 with Cardiff. His only step into management came in 2015 at another of his former clubs, when he became caretaker manager at Aldershot Town the club were he had previously won two player of the season awards in three seasons.

Jefferson Louis has this week joined St Albans City – the 42nd club of his career. The Harrow born player has had a real journeyman career, playing for 42 different clubs, playing for three of them on two separate spells. The striker has scored over 230 goals in the over 721 clubs games that he is recorded to have played. On top of this, he also has one international cap for Dominica, in a 2010 World Cup qualifier against Barbados, where he played alongside his cousin Richard Pacquette. Now aged 40, he started his career in 1996, making his first, first team debut for Risborough Rangers. Despite spending most of his career in non league, he would play several times in the Football League, notably for Bristol Rovers and Mansfield Town, among others. During the calendar year of 2005, he played for six different clubs.

The 2010s decade saw Barnet play a total of 604 games in all competitions, including friendlies. Out of that total, there were 223 wins, giving a win rate of 36.92%. There were also 140 draws and 241 defeats. A total of 461 league games were played across League 2 and the Conference / National League, with 24 FA Cup, 13 FA Trophy, 9 League Cup, 15 Football League Trophy, 11 Hertfordshire Senior Cup and 9 Middlesex Senior Cup games, as well as a total of 52 friendlies. During those games, we won two trophies, the 2011 Hertfordshire Senior Cup and the 2015 Vanarama Conference.

LONDON BEES

LONDON BEES

MID SEASON REVIEW

Written By Adam Rowe

ROUND UP

Media and communication executive Adam Rowe talks us through the first half of London Bees campaign. The London Bees have reached the halfway mark of the season and have now entered into the winter break which happens across the women’s game. Since the summer where Head Coach Lee Burch was appointed, the Bees have gone from strength to strength and currently sit 5th in the FA Women’s Championship. The Bees made a decent start to the season and went four games unbeaten after opening day defeat to full time outfit London City Lionesses. They defeated newly promoted Coventry United and Blackburn Rovers, before coming from two goals behind to take a point at Leicester City. An unbeaten Lewes side then visited The Hive London and the Bees thrilled the crowd as they secured an impressive 2-1 victory. As a result of that impressive form Head Coach Burch was awarded manager of the month for September, with his side just a point off of top spot. Lauren Pickett was taking the plaudits for her early season goal scoring exploits but a team built around 10 new summer signings was gelling together nicely. Arguably the highlight of the season so far came in the Continental Tyres cup when the Bees visited rivals London City Lionesses. The Lionesses are a full time outfit and were many pundits tip to secure promotion to the top flight after a summer of heavy investment. But the Bees showed no fear and put in a fantastic performance as they blitzed the side nicknamed ‘The Pride’ 3-0 in a dominant display. The Bees most certainly took the bragging rights that afternoon and it was a result that outsiders looked on in surprise, however it came as a surprise to no one in the Bees camp. A result of that nature was on the horizon and gave Burch’s side an outside chance of qualification. A dramatic penalty shootout victory over Charlton followed, on a memorable afternoon at The Hive London. We were 38

BARNETFC.COM

reduced to ten players in the second half but held strong to take a bonus point victory that left us in touching distance of the qualification places. In recent weeks, there has been a tough period for the Bees as we took on three of the top four in league action and have been on the wrong side of narrow contests. Burch’s side ran the league leaders Aston Villa all the way at The Hive a couple of weeks ago but lost out 2-1 just a week after falling to defeat away to Durham in controversial circumstances. They then faced off to two top WSL sides and suffered heavy defeats to Brighton and Arsenal, however those experiences have only made the team stronger and they did the Club proud with the heart they showed in those tough matches. Just like Barnet FC there has been plenty for the Bees Academy to shout about as they continue to produce players who make the First Team. Our most recent graduate is midfielder Mathilda Finburgh who made her debut in the Conti Cup against Brighton before making her first league appearance in the 1-1 draw with Charlton Athletic. Goalkeeper Faye Hazelton has also travelled and been on the bench in recent games as she continues to develop into a future Bees number one. All in all it’s been a really positive half to the campaign for the Bees and they are positioned with a chance of breaking their record points tally for a season in the second tier. We would love to see some more supporters down to cheer us on in 2020, so if you haven’t been to a London Bees game before then come on down and give it a go! Everyone at London Bees hopes you had an enjoyable Christmas and we wish you a Happy New Year. Let’s hope it’s a successful one for both London Bees and Barnet FC!

BOREHAM WOOD AWAY POSTCARD

We were entering the new year with a derby day at Boreham Wood which meant what felt like a very early departure after New Year’s Eve celebrations the night before. My parents and I left Leeds around 10am to head down the M1 to north London. We were parked in Boreham Wood’s car park just before 2pm which was perfect timing for us to get in the ground for some food and grab a good spot on the terrace. We enjoyed lunch whilst watching the teams warm up and the away end started to fill up nicely. By the time 3pm came, the 760 Bees fans were ready to cheer the team on. The game started lively with chances from Jack Taylor early on. As the half went on, the game started to settle down but we still had chances, with the opposition doing well to keep us out on 20 minutes. On 31 minutes, Fonguck’s shot hit the bar and just 6 minutes later Elliott Johnson took a beautiful shot from far out which Ashmore did well to save. We went into half time 0-0 and I enjoyed a hot chocolate to warm me up from the freezing cold. The teams came out for the second half in the hope of finding the goal. The second half started more equal with us going forward as well as Boreham Wood taking their opportunities too. On 76 minutes Jack Taylor took a wonderful shot which went just wide of the post and down the other end it was Loach who was impressive, making a spectacular save to keep Smith’s shot out. Mason-Clark and Vilhete were introduced into the game and in the closing minutes we threw everything at it with many chances going forward and were unlucky not to score, our biggest chance being a header that went just wide from Mauro. The game finished 0-0 and Currie and the boys came over to applaud the fans. We took a detour via Barnet for some tea before heading back up North and arriving home around midnight. Although it wasn’t our most thrilling game, we come out of the festive period unbeaten and with 2 clean sheets. Onto Saturday’s game!
