Good evening everyone and welcome to The Hive London for this evening’s league fixture with Dagenham and Redbridge. A very warm welcome to all the Daggers fans as well, I had a great spell with them and have a lot of respect for the people associated with the football club. It was a gritty and determined performance on Saturday and I was delighted that we were able to secure a crucial three points. The move for the goal was a great passage of play and it was great to see Macca on the end of it to get himself on the score-sheet again. We then defended really well and had chances to add more, but it was a good win and it keeps us in touch with those ahead of us. But as you know, I like to take one game at a time and its full focus on getting the result on home soil this evening. Daryl has his side playing some good stuff and they are in good form, so I’m under no illusions that it’ll be a very tough game tonight. We have been in really good form of late and the boys are all chomping at the bit to get out there, so I look forward to seeing us put in

another strong performance. It is so good to have a big squad to choose from again and have those nice headaches! Everyone will play their part in the run in and all the boys who aren’t perhaps starting will certainly be crucial to us during the next run of games. When I say everyone, I mean everyone! So that includes you guys, who are here cheering us on. I know it has been frustrating of late, but you’ve stuck with us, so keep it up and get right behind the boys. It was brilliant to see some of you at Chorley and I am glad we sent you home happy. Hopefully, we can keep putting in performances that make you proud.

History Despite only being in existence for 28 years, Dagenham & Redbridge Football Club have had their fair share of highs and lows their highest being promotion to League One following a 3-2 play off final victory over Rotherham United at Wembley Stadium. The Club came about following a series of mergers which saw Leytonstone, Ilford and Walthamstow Avenue form Redbridge Forest who in turn merged with Dagenham FC in 1992 to form the current Club. All four had proud histories as amateur clubs in the past but due to dwindling attendances, had fallen on hard times. The first season of Dagenham & Redbridge FC saw them finish third behind Wycombe Wanderers in the GM Vauxhall Conference and reach the 1st Round proper of the FA Cup, where they were defeated 5-4 in a thrilling game against Leyton Orient. Unfortunately after this things began to go downhill for the club especially off the pitch. Firstly manager John Still attracted a lot of interest and when Peterborough made an approach which 12

was too good to turn down, he moved on and this was followed by a Trustee of the Club illegally removing half a million pounds which he was later convicted of. Money was now tight and the 1995/6 season saw the Daggers finish bottom of the GM Vauxhall Conference and suffer relegation to the Isthmian League. To ensure the Club didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t continue a downward trend Ted Hardy was appointed to stabilise it. At 67 years of age, Ted worked the same magic as heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d worked in the seventies with Enfield and Dagenham FC and against all odds took the team to Wembley in the FA Trophy final. Despite the heavy underdog tag placed upon them they battled hard and were unfortunate to lose 0-1 in extra time to Woking having played for an hour with only 10 men. League finishes of fourth, fourth and third meant that Ted had achieved the target of stability and on Monday 1st March 1999 he announced his resignation, leaving the Club in a much healthier position than when he arrived. The Daggers installed Garry Hill into the hot seat and in his first season they returned to the Conference having romped to the Isthmian League title recording 20 victories and a draw from their 21 home league games and an outstanding 101 points.

Daggers a famous 0-0 draw only for an injury time goal to seal it for the canaries. A Conference record breaking eleven match winning run took them from 15th place in January up into the promotion play-off places which they qualified for. They defeated Morecambe after a penalty shoot-out in the semi-final and met Doncaster Rovers in the first ever final at Stoke City’s Britannia Stadium. Two goals behind, the Daggers took the game into a golden goal extra time period with two second half strikes but in the second period Francis Tierney scored the goal which spelled more heartbreak for the Daggers. Garry Hill departed at the end of the following season and the Club turned to John Still for a second spell in charge. The Daggers squad had been boosted over the previous three years by good cup runs and the 2004/5 season was a transitional one with new players being required to replace some of the higher paid and experienced ones. Within a year John had completed the task of making the whole playing squad full time with the average age only 23. They ended that season in 10th place, improving on the previous season’s position by one.

The success story continued into the 2000/01 season as the Club captured the National headlines on the Sports Pages as they first defeated Lincoln City in the FA Cup then came within four minutes of defeating Premiership Charlton Athletic at the Valley in the FA Cup third round. In the replay held at Victoria Road, the Club battled their way into extra time but the Premiership side eventually won 1-0. By the end of their first season back in the Conference they achieved third place.

No one realised just how much the young players had developed over the past couple of seasons but that became evident as last season panned out. At the end of October the Club were ten points behind hot favourites Oxford United and a play-off place was seen as the best they could hope for, instead they kept up the pressure on the leaders and on the last day of 2006 they took top spot in the League, a position they wouldn’t relinquish. Even the sale of Craig Mackail Smith and Shane Blackett to Peterborough for a Club record transfer fee in January didn’t affect their form and they continued to pull clear of the chasing pack. On 7th April 2007, a 2-1 home win over Aldershot Town gave them the Championship and with it a place in the Football League they had been so close to achieving in the past.

The 2001/2 season saw the Club rise to top of the Conference on September 11th for the first time ever. After the previous season’s exploits in the FA Cup, there was a high level of expectation at the team didn’t disappoint. After defeating Football League Exeter City 3-0 in a second round replay, they took the lead in the third round tie at home to Premiership Ipswich Town in front of the Clubs record attendance of 5949. Unfortunately an upset wasn’t to be and Ipswich ran out 4-1 winners. The Conference championship turned into a two-horse race with Boston United and the Daggers heartbreakingly missing out on promotion to the Football League on goal difference. The disappointment was made even worse when the Lincolnshire side were found guilty of illegal payments to players but the points deduction was carried into the following season.

Dagenham & Redbridge’s first Football League game ended in a 0-1 defeat at Stockport County. Life in the Football League was tough for John Still’s men but they made it to the Third Round in both the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and FA Cup before away defeats against Gillingham and Southend Untied respectively. February saw the Daggers start a five match unbeaten run, which saw them record their best wins home and away, beating Chester City 6-2 and Grimsby Town 4-1. Those victories gave the Daggers hope of finishing outside the relegation places but the next nine matches ended without any victories. In the penultimate fixture of the season, a fantastic second half display at Darlington saw them turn a 0-2 deficit into a 3-2 victory to retain their position in the Football League.

The following season saw the Club miss out on promotion to the football league for the second season running again by the closest of margins. In the giant killing style they had become associated and drew 2-2 to Second Division Plymouth Argyle at Home Park in the third round of the FA Cup before defeating them 2-0 in the replay televised live by Sky TV. The fourth round paired them with First Division Norwich City at Carrow Road where a heroic performance from goalkeeper Tony Roberts looked to have earned the

The second season saw the Club start the season how they meant to go on with a 6-0 victory over Chester City. The Daggers went into the final game of the season needing to avoid defeat against Shrewsbury to qualify for the play offs but lost the game 1-2 to miss out. They did finish as the top goalscorers in League Two and pushed League One Champions Leicester City all the way losing by the odd goal in five at the Walkers Stadium in the FA Cup second round.

The 2012/13 season saw the club fail to collect a win in their first eight games. Dwight Gayle, with seven goals and two assists in 18 games, gave the club the lift they needed going into the winter period including a 5-0 hammering of Rotherham United. Gayle’s performances earned him a move to Peterborough United and the club netted over half a million pounds in the process. Long-serving manager John Still decided he needed a new challenge in March and headed for Luton Town taking Coach Terry Harris with him. Wayne Burnett took over the position in an interim capacity and in his first game the club earned a 1-1 draw at Bradford City who had played in the Capital One Cup final at Wembley four days earlier. A win at Exeter with four games to go looked to have sealed the Daggers Football League place for another season but three defeats in their last three games saw the Daggers escape relegation on goal-difference on the last day of the season with Barnet and Aldershot Town finishing below them.

The 2009/10 season saw seven players leave to move up the leagues including Scott Griffiths to Peterborough and Solomon Taiwo to Cardiff City. Despite this, John Still brought in players from a lower level to fill the void and saw the side top the table on occasions during the first half of the season. A mid-season slump saw them drop to thirteenth at one stage but a surge at the end saw the Club reach the end of season play off’s by virtue of a seventh place finish. In the semi-final first leg they broke all previous play-off records with a six goal rout of Morecambe and despite losing the second leg 1-2, went through to the final at Wembley 7-2 on aggregate. 32,054 attended the final on 20th May and saw goals from Paul Benson, Danny Green give the Daggers the lead on two occasions only for the Millers to equalise on both occasions. Barbados international Jon Nurse struck the winner after 69 minutes as the Essex side continued their amazing climb through the football pyramid.

Wayne Burnett signed a two-year contract as manager in May 2013 and in his first full season in charge led the team to a ninth place finish in League Two, playing a more attractive style of football in the process however a poor start to the 2015/16 led to his departure and the return to management of John Still. The Daggers’ 2016/17 season was an eventful season both on and off the pitch for Dagenham & Redbridge, with the Essex side almost returning to the Football League at the first time of asking only narrowly missing out in the promotion Semi-final to Forest Green Rovers. Daggers captain Scott Doe reached 300 appearances for the Club in March as well as the Daggers finishing fourth after being hit with a number of first team injuries.

The size of the task facing the squad in League One was evident in the opening game of the following season as a trip to Sheffield Wednesday saw over 23,000 fans watch on as the home side ran out 2-0 victors. The club’s first win in the third tier came against Leyton Orient in early September, this coming a few days after fans favorite Paul Benson left the Daggers for Charlton Athletic. Despite all the odds the club went into the last day of the season with fate in their own hands but with over 1,000 Daggers making the trip to London Road Peterborough ran out easy winner to condemn the Daggers to relegation.

John Still’s men began the 2017/18 season in fine form, occupying a play-off place until the turn of the year. However, in February 2018 it was announced that Glyn Hopkin had resigned as a director of the football club and would no longer fund any shortfall in the running of the Company. This meant that the likes of Sam Ling and Morgan Ferrier were sold as the club struggled to cover losses. A fundraiser friendly against West Ham United which saw senior Hammers players like Mark Noble, Pablo Zabaleta and Michail Antonio grace the Chigwell Construction Stadium as the Daggers fell to a 3-1 defeat. The match raised vital funds and enabled the Daggers to see out the rest of the 2017/18 season, finishing in a respectable 11th place.

Star performers Danny Green & Romain Vincelot left in the summer of 2011 for Charlton & Brighton respectively, whilst Tony Roberts finally hung up his gloves to take up a coaching position at Arsenal. After picking up a number of points in August and September injuries didn’t help the club and a disastrous run of just one win in sixteen League games followed. Results picked up slightly in the new-year but following a defeat in a home ‘six pointer’ with Northampton Town in March the Daggers were again bottom and looking doomed. With ten games to go they went on a remarkable run losing just once and a final day 4-0 win over Bristol Rovers saw the Daggers finish in 19th place.

In May 2018, Daggers Legend John Still resigned as manager of the club as a direct result of the club’s

The Daggers secured the services of Wilkinson on a permanent deal in January, a huge coup for the club. The striker scored 12 goals in 23 appearances as he and his team-mates secured the East London side’s National League status with three games to spare after superb a 1-0 victory away at Ebbsfleet United, a brilliant feat considering the club’s predicament at the start of the campaign.

The pair used their expert knowledge to put together a young, hungry squad on a small budget ahead of the 2018/19 National League season. More good news was to follow in September 2018, with the news that Trinity Sports Holdings would be taking over majority ownership of the club. The American consortium headed by Executive Chairman, Peter B. Freund, along with Director, Craig Unger and former Everton and Manchester United goalkeeper, Tim Howard secured the long-term future of the football club.

The Daggers embarked on their 4th successive season in the National League, looking to build on the solid foundations that have been put in place by the club’s investors, Trinity Sports Holdings. Peter Taylor recently departed the club after a run of poor form, with the first team coach Jody Brown also leaving after the arrival of the new management team. Daryl McMahon has come in as Manager, with Terry Harris and Steve Gritt his joint-Assistant Managers, and Dave Jupp arriving as Strength and Conditioning and First Team Coach.

The takeover allowed for the signings of two key players, Kenny Clark, Angelo Balanta, as well as bringing in Football League pair Manny Onariase and Conor Wilkinson to the club on loan. These new additions helped propel the Daggers up the table, collecting nine

Onariase signed permanently with the Daggers ahead of the 2019/20 season after impressing boss Peter Taylor and becoming a fan favourite at Victoria Road. Manny started his career in the West Ham Academy from the age of 12 until 19. The centre back went onto to make his Under 23’s debut at just 16 and was featured on the bench for the Hammers’ League fixture against Arsenal in March 2015. The 22-year-old has also had spells at Brentford and Cheltenham Town.

Mitch joined the Daggers in June from National League side Dover Athletic, signing a two-year deal with the east London side. The midfielder, who can also play at full-back, was involved in over a third of Dover Athletic’s goals in the 2018/19 National League season. Registering eight goals and 13 assists, the Englishman had a hand in 36% of Dover’s goals, while also captaining the side for two seasons. Brundle started his career in Yeovil Town’s youth ranks, before moving on to Bristol City in 2013. While at Bristol, he went out on loan to Cheltenham Town, after which he signed permanently for Braintree Town in 2014. He was part of the Braintree team that finished third in the National League, before going on to be defeated by Grimsby in the play-off semi-final in the 2015/16 season. In recent years, Brundle has enjoyed spells at Gateshead and Dover, with the 24-year-old’s goal and assist tallies increasing season on season.

Chike joined the club in September 2017. The 23-yearold forward spent his youth career at Birmingham, Chelsea, West Brom and Brighton & Hove Albion. In the 2016/17 season, Kandi made 16 appearances for Woking, scoring three goals in the National League, before joining Leatherhead at the end of season.

He has also played at international level for Walesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Under-19 side scoring one goal in his only appearance. The pacey forward made 19 appearances for the Club in the 2017/18 season-opening his account in the 2-0 home win League fixture against AFC Fylde after coming on as a sub.

Luque joined the Daggers having spent 2019 with National League South side Concord Rangers after his release from Lincoln City. The former Barcelona trainee played 11 times for the Essex side, who finished 6th in the National League South, with Luque grabbing three league goals. The Spaniard joined Heybridge Swifts in 2017 as one of 21 players from Spain, Andorra and Argentina who trained with the club. He went onto score an impressive 30 goals for Swifts in all competitions, 17 of which came in the league.

Kandi enjoyed a good end to the 2018/19 campaign, which saw him earn a contract extension with the club. The forward made 38 appearances and found the net six times in the 2018/19 campaign.

McMAHON REPRESENTED THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND UNDER-16 TEAM AT THE 2000 UEFA EUROPEAN UNDER-16 FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP. Starting his career as a midfielder at West Ham United, he switched to Port Vale in 2004 after failing to make a first team appearance for West Ham. Later in the year he moved on to Leyton Orient, where he would remain for three years. He then spent two seasons at Stevenage Borough, moving on to Cambridge United and then Farnborough in 2009. Two years later he moved on to Boreham Wood, and seven months later to Eastleigh. He has also played for Torquay United and Notts County on loan. He switched to Dover Athletic in September 2012, before signing for Ebbsfleet United in June 2013. He rejoined Boreham Wood in January 2015 before returning to Ebbsfleet as manager three months later. He managed Ebbsfleet from April 2015 to November 2018 and won promotion out of the National League South play-offs in 2017. He was appointed as manager of English Football League side Macclesfield Town in August 2019, but tendered his resignation in January 2020 amidst a financial crisis at the club. He then took charge at National League side Dagenham & Redbridge. Daryl became Daggers Gaffer in January 2020 after the departure of Peter Taylor. McMahon takes charge after leaving Macclesfield Town, a club in serious financial strife. The new Managerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first task is to assure National League safety, before looking higher up the table, and pushing on for a play-off push in the 2020/21 season. 23

WALKING FOOTBALL TEAM A proud day for us all as a golden envelope was delivered with our invite to the London Sports Awards. Included with our invitation, were golden laces to wear on the evening coinciding with this year’s dress code of black tie and trainers. We have been nominated in the ‘Impact in the Community’ group alongside some amazing groups such as Care for Carers and the Black Prince Trust. Our nomination is our victory when compared to the company we are in. Over the next few months, the trials for the England Walking Football community teams take place in preparation for the IWFF Euro 2020 in Wales. We are again proud that our goalkeepers have made it through to the final selection, a big congratulations to Nick Krieger in the 60’s age group and to both Bill Charge and Tom Bentley who are in our over 70’s teams. We are also looking forward to March and the start of the Middlesex FA league and of course, in April we go to the Netherlands to compete in a European Tournament…Barnet in a European tournament, who would have thought it?! Ex-Welsh international goalkeeper Tony Roberts was a key figure in Dagenham & Redbridgeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2006-07 Conference title triumph. Signing professional for QPR in July 1987, he gained much top-flight experience before moving to Millwall in August 1998, then St Albans City. He joined Daggers in July 2000, starring as they took Charlton Athletic to an FA Cup third round replay in 2000-01, were pipped to the Conference title in 2001-02, then reached the FA Cup fourth round in 2002-03. Featuring in their 2009-10 League Two play-off final triumph, he made a record 175 League appearances, becoming Arsenalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s goalkeeping coach. 26

Ex-England Youth striker Mark Stein was Daggers’ leading marksman in two successive seasons. Initially with Luton Town, he appeared alongside older brother Brian in their 1988 League Cup final triumph. He moved to QPR in August 1988, then played for Oxford United, Stoke City, Chelsea and Bournemouth before rejoining Luton in July 2000. Joining the Daggers in July 2001, he starred as they were Conference runnersup in 2001-02, then scored in the 2002-03 Conference play-off final. He netted 45 goals in 71 Conference games before moving to Waltham Forest and has been a physiotherapist at Barnet and Crawley.

Striker Paul Benson scored a club record 28 goals in Dagenham & Redbridge’s 2006-07 Conference title triumph. A prolific scorer with White Ensign, he joined the Daggers in July 2005. He was the Conference’s leading marksman in 2006-07 and scored on his England Semi-Pro debut in Northern Ireland in February 2007. Featuring in the Daggers’ first League match at Stockport in August 2007, he was top scorer four times and netted in their 2010 League Two play-off final triumph. He joined Charlton Athletic in August 2010, since playing for Swindon, John Still’s Luton, Daggers again, Boreham Wood and Bedford Town.

Striker Craig Mackail-Smith featured Dagenham & Redbridge won the Conference title in 2006-07. He began with St Albans City and joined Arlesey in August 2003. Moving to Victoria Road in July 2004, he formed a fine partnership with Chris Moore as the Daggers took eventual winners Grays to an FA Trophy fourth round replay in 2005-06. He netted 38 goals in 107 Conference games prior to joining Peterborough United with Shane Blackett in January 2007 and helped twice win promotion. Moving to Brighton in July 2011, he reunited with John Still at Luton Town in July 2015, since playing for Wycombe and Stevenage.

John Still plotted Dagenham & Redbridge’s 2010 League Two play-off final triumph. A former central defender at Orient, Dagenham, Bishop’s Stortford, Ilford and Leytonstone, he managed Leytonstone/Ilford to the Isthmian League title in 1981-82. He moved via Dartford to Maidstone and won the Conference title in 1988-89, then managed Daggers, taking charge of Peterborough in August 1994. Later Barnet’s boss, he coached Bristol Rovers, rejoining Daggers as manager in April 2004. He led them to the Conference title in 2006-07 and became Luton’s boss in February 2013, since managing Daggers again, Barnet and Maidstone.

Garry Hill managed a successful era at Dagenham & Redbridge. His managerial career started at Heybridge Swifts, leading them to the Isthmian League First Division (North) title in 1995-96. He then managed St Albans City before taking charge of Dagenham & Redbridge in July 1999. Plotting the Daggers’ 1999-2000 Isthmian League Premier Division title triumph and three FA Cup runs, he led them to the Conference play-off final in 2002-03. He then managed Hornchurch, Weymouth, Rushden & Diamonds and Woking, guiding them to the Conference South title in 2011-12, since having a spell in charge of Ebbsfleet United.

Dagenham & Redbridge stormed to the Isthmian League title in 1999-2000, winning the title by 24 points from nearest challengers Aldershot. Garry Hill replaced Ted Hardy as manager during the summer. After the Daggers went top in late September with a 4-0 win over then leaders Enfield, they remained in pole position, with only brief challenges from St Albans City and Aldershot. They lost just one of their first 20 Isthmian League games, overcoming a poor spell in February to drop only four points from their last 14 matches. Only Chesham left Victoria Road with a point as the Daggers gained a club record 101 points.

Paul Benson was leading marksman with 28 goals as Dagenham & Redbridge swept to the Conference title in 2006-07. They lost their opening home match and suffered early exits in the FA Cup and FA Trophy. Results picked up and the Daggers went top after a 1-0 victory over Halifax Town at the end of December. John Still’s side lost at home to Rushden & Diamonds shortly after selling Craig Mackail-Smith and Shane Blackett to Peterborough United for a club-record fee in January but were then unbeaten in their next ten games. They clinched the title with a 2-1 win over Aldershot, finishing 14 points clear of Oxford United.

Dagenham & Redbridge made headlines as they took top-flight Charlton Athletic to an FA Cup third-round replay in 200001. Garry Hill’s side won 3-1 at home to Hayes in the first round before Mark Janney’s goal clinched a 1-0 secondround win at Lincoln City, the first time the Daggers had defeated Football League opposition in the competition. They were cruelly denied from becoming the first non-Leaguers to beat a Premier League side in the FA Cup by John Salako’s late equaliser at Charlton, then unluckily lost 1-0 after extra time in the replay watched by 5,394 at Victoria Road. The Daggers finished third in the Conference.

John Still plotted Dagenham & Redbridge’s 2010 League Two play-off final triumph. They won their first three games, slamming five goals past Torquay and Shrewsbury, then bounced back from a 3-0 defeat at Notts County to go top with a 3-0 victory over Lincoln. They lost just once in 12 matches to regain pole position with a 1-0 win at Accrington in November, but just two wins in their next 12 games saw them slip to mid-table. Newcomers Marlon Pack and Damien McCrory helped to improve results and they qualified for the playoffs in seventh place. They beat Morecambe 7-2, then Rotherham 3-2 in the Wembley final.

Scott Loach’s Reaction all the way. Dagenham have picked up, bringing in new players and a new manager. We’ve just got to take it one game at a time. We’ve lost to Solihull, but we bounced back today and if that’s the case for the rest of the season, if we win every other one we’re going to get into the playoffs. We’ve just got to have that consistency from now until May. In regard to the FA Trophy, I don’t want to say too much but it’s a team that everyone is going to expect us to beat but we need to be professional about it and get the job done and over the line.

On the performance It’s never going to be pretty is it? To be fair, I’m going to give them credit before I start off because they tried to play the right way and it’s unfortunate to see them down there because the way they try to play football is the right way and they’re not actually bad. They made it a tough game. We had the perfect start which has probably been the opposite for us in previous games. With the experience we have and ability in the team, going 1-0 up definitely steady’s the ship. I wasn’t really tested today so credit to the lads who got a hold of the game. They did have some spells, but I think we managed it well.

On the fans We’ve had great support. Whether there is 50 who travel or 200 who travel, to get any who brave this weather, it’s been horrific these last two or three weeks, whenever there is a bit of a setback, they are still there in numbers and that’s why we need to put these performances in. These people pay their money and they deserve at least a performance and they’re getting that now. Maybe not the way we want to play football but we’re getting the nitty-gritty and showing that desire. We’ve said all along if you’re showing that desire now then they go away happy.

On grinding out the result If you look at the conditions, we were against the wind in the first half and to get the win behind you in the second half, with McCallum’s ability in the air, you’ve always got a good chance. Their ‘Keeper made one of the best saves we’ve seen this season to be fair to him. If that goes in its 2-0 and it could go on to be three of four. I think 1-0 is not a bad thing because if you can get over the line like that, then you would definitely take eight more of them before the end of the season.

On the quality in front of him I think when we’re on it, you’re still going to let goals in, and teams are going to have spells where I’m busy but that’s my job. I think it starts from the front with McCallum now having that big presence and that’s no disrespect to Simeon or Josh because they’ve been excellent this season, but they need the help of McCallum as well with his experience and strength up there. It kind of gives us a bit of fear factor as well. Teams will now play us and think “ahh no, they’ve got McCallum”, it kind of gives us a bit of a one-up on them already.

On the rest of the season We’ll take it one game at a time. We’re fortunate that we’ve got quite a few games in hand. It’s not going to be plain sailing

The Bees made the perfect start as Paul McCallum slid to touch home after Simeon Akinola’s strike was well saved by Matt Urwin. It was the perfect start for Darren Currie’s side as they led inside two minutes.

McCallum then got onto Vilhete’s cross on the follow-up, but his flying header from six yards out went agonisingly over the crossbar.

It could have been two just after as the ball flicked up to Dan Sweeney who forced a great stop out of Matt Urwin. Akinola was next to go close as he flicked James Dunne’s well-taken free-kick into the gloves of Urwin. Up the other end, the hosts went close as Alex Newby was inches away from finding a teammate at the back post. The hosts continued to up the anti midway through the half, but the Bees stood firm and limited the hosts to half chances. Callum Reynolds did well to evert the biggest danger of the half as Alex Newby put in a wicked delivery, which our number four did brilliantly to turn behind We went in ahead at the break and deservedly so after a commanding opening 45 minutes in the North-West. The Bees handled the game very well in the opening stages of the second half and were inches away from doubling their lead, as Urwin made an outstanding 32

Sweeney then struck a venomous strike towards goal but it was superbly defended by Meppen-Walters as he bravely headed the strike behind for a corner kick. Akinola linked up well with Sweeney and found himself in the box but fired over 10 yards from goal, the Bees dominating the game against the Magpies. The Bees saw the game out professionally as the hosts looked to throw caution to the wind. Scott Loach wasn’t called into action at all to make a save of note. Substitute Josh Walker had the last chance of the afternoon as he fired just wide from the edge of the box, but the Bees did more than enough to deservedly take all three points back to London.

Championship side Stoke City have cancelled the contract of midfielder Giannelli Imbula, despite having 18 months left on his contract. He became the clubs’ most expensive signing in January 2016, signing from FC Porto for £18.3 million. Born in Belgium, he played for France at Under 20 and Under 21 levels, before representing Democratic Republic of Congo at full international level. He started out his career at Guingamp, before moving to Marseille, initially playing in their B team before being promoted to their senior side. He would then spend half a season at the Portuguese side before moving to England. However, he would only play 28 times for the Potters, scoring twice. In 2017/18, he was loaned out to Toulouse, last season he was sent out to Rayo Vallecano before spending this season on loan at US Lecce in Italy. His spell in Staffordshire was littered with disciplinary issues both on and off of the pitch.

Our local rivals Boreham Wood have signed Eastwood Town, Corby Town and Mansfield Town forward Matt Rhead on a short term contract, which runs up until the end of the season. The 35 year old was a free agent, having been released by National League South side Billericay in October, when the clubs’ former chairman Glenn Tamplin resigned from the club, despite the player having spent just two months at the club. Rhead played for Lincoln City between 2015 and 2019, making just shy of 200 appearances for the club, scoring on 49 occasions. Helping the side to two promotions, from the National League up to League 1. He is notable for being on the end of Joey Barton’s dive to try and get him sent off during Lincoln’s game against Burnley, in their run to the FA Cup quarter final back in 2017.

Having been in charge of the club as caretaker manager since the start of the year, Chesterfield have appointed John Pemberton as their permanent manager up until the end of the season. Former Leeds United, Sheffield Wednesday and Oldham Athletic midfielder John Sheridan was sacked as manager on 2nd January, having been originally appointed as manager last January. He had guided the side to a 14th place in the National League last season, before leaving the club last month with the club third from bottom. Pemberton has struggled to turn around the form, with the side currently occupying 21st place in the league. Pemberton has also previously spent time managing the Spireites’ academy last season, before taking over as caretaker manager again after Martin Allan’s sacking.

Wycombe Wanderers have this week announced that American businessman Rob Couhig has completed his takeover of the Buckinghamshire club. The 70 year old lawyer, who purchased a 75% stake of the club from the Wycombe Wanderers Trust, is set to become the chairman of the club, with his wife Missy and his nephew Pete also going to join the clubs’ board. The remaining 25% of the club is also to be retained by the Trust, with previous chairman Trevor Stroud retaining a seat on the board. Couhig is set to invest £2.2 million into repaying clubs debts and to make a further £1 million available to the club, with £150,000 going towards a 15 year lease on their Adams Park Stadium. The side are currently third in League 1, just one point off of the top two places.

Championship side Barnsley have received a fine believed to be £20,000 and have also been ordered to implement a plan of action after some of their fans targeted Stoke City player James McClean with sectarian abuse. The incident happened in the game between the two clubs on 9th November, when the Potters won 4-2 at Oakwell, with the abuse being reported to the referee by the player on the 32nd minute. This was then reported to the fourth official, coaches from both clubs and club stewards, with video footage of the match being reviewed later, showing a “significant number of individuals” chanting the abuse. Barnsley have also been criticised for not doing anything about preventing the chanting before the game started.

Staines Town have parted company with manager Martin Kuhl after less than three months in charge. The former Birmingham City, Portsmouth and Derby County midfielder initially joined the club in December, when he replaced then interim manager Mahrez Bettache, but the former Aldershot Town and Reading caretaker manager has failed to turn around the sides’ fortunes, losing nine out of their eleven league games played in that time, drawing the remaining two. His only victory with the club came in the Middlesex Senior Cup, when they beat Barnet here at the Hive. The side currently sit in 19th place in the BetVictor Isthmian League Division 1 South Central, having been relegated from the Southern League Premier Division South last season, having played in the Conference South as recently as 2015.
