From the Manager
FIRSTLY, I REALLY HOPE YOU ENJOYED LAST WEEKEND’S VICTORY AGAINST BURTON ALBION. The spirit here at The Hive has been great this week, from players to all the staff, we’re all immensely proud of last weekend’s performance. It was a strange game for me personally, doing interviews whilst trying to manage the team was a new challenge! I really hope you enjoyed the game from home. We look forward to welcoming MK Dons in a couple of week’s time but now it’s time to focus on the league campaign. Before discussing things any further, I want to touch on the disappointing news on Eliot’s injury. We’re all gutted for him, it’s a nasty injury and we will all do everything we can to support him during this difficult period. It’s also a massive loss for us, as I felt he was starting to really become a key player for us in the last few matches, so
we will have to adapt to play without him. The whole squad has shown recently how important they all are and now its time for those who come in to step up with good performances. Today’s game, as always, is a very challenging one on paper. Bromley have made a decent start to the season and they are a very well drilled and organised side. We need to match the efforts we have shown in the last few matches and ensure we give it everything to get a crucial three points this afternoon. Thanks for your continued support,

The Captain JAMES
DUNNE
From the Captain GOOD AFTERNOON ALL AND I HOPE YOU ENJOYED LAST WEEKEND’S FA CUP VICTORY OVER BURTON ALBION! I thought the lads put in a fantastic effort throughout the game and to beat a League One side with 10 men was a great achievement. Even though we obviously had to defend throughout the second half, I think that on reflection we deserved the victory. I thought the likes of Nuge and Loachy were top class, the whole back four were immense last weekend. Today we finally return to league action and I really hope that we can use last week as a platform to kick on up the league. With everything that’s happened, we really haven’t played many games so this next month is a good chance to build some momentum ahead of the new year. That starts today, with a really tough game against Bromley. They are a good, physical side and last year we were disappointed with our performance against them here at The Hive. We’re full of confidence and on good form, so we are coming into this one in high spirits. Now all that is left to do is to put in a performance and get those three points. Keep cheering us on from home and hopefully, we’ll see you soon.

Walking football BARNET OVER 65’S
Back in lockdown again and hopefully it will only be a 4 week break for us . With Christmas approaching, we know that the food bank at OneStonegrove community trust will start to come under pressure. As such we had a conversation with John Byrne of The Hive Foundation and it was decided we would do our best to help re stock with sweet treats, chocolate, cakes, pies and sweets etc. With covid cancelling our Friday session we hastily arranged a visit with bags full of happy food to be delivered to the community centre. With no football, it was back into lockdown mode and Kevin Ziants organised a zoom meet up , with players joining us from Edgware to Israel. We will continue to try to protect the mental health of our squad with zoom, texts and good old fashioned phone calls. On our social media, players send in pictures of their walks inspired by Mike Moate and bike rides with John Cockburn. Stay safe, stay healthy and see you soon, from the Barnet FC Walking Football Team

Established in 1892, Bromley initially played in the South London League. Before becoming founder members of the Southern League in 1894, joining Division Two. However, after finishing bottom of Division Two in 1895–96 they left to become founder members of the London League, also joining Division Two. They won the division at the first attempt and were promoted to Division One. They switched to the Kent League for the 1898–99 season, but after finishing bottom of the league, they returned to Division One of the London League. During the 1899–1900 season, the club withdrew from Division One, taking over their reserves’ fixtures in Division Two. They withdrew from Division Two at the end of the 1900–01 season. In 1907 the club were founder members of the Spartan League and went on to become its inaugural champions. They joined the Isthmian League for the following season and won back-to-back titles in 1908–09 and 1909–10. In 1910–11 the club won the FA Amateur Cup, beating Bishop Auckland 1–0 in the final. The season also saw them finish seventh in 1910–11, the club returned to the Kent League and was placed in Division One. They remained in the league until World War I but joined the Athenian League when football resumed in 1919.
TODAY’S OPPOSITION
The club was Athenian League champions in 1922–23. In 1937–38 they reached the first round of the FA Cup for the first time. After beating King’s Lynn in the first round, they lost 4–1 at Scarborough in the second. They also reached the final of the FA Amateur Cup again, beating Erith & Belvedere 1–0. The club repeated the feat the following season, this time playing Football League opposition for the first time as they lost 8–1 at Lincoln City in the second round. In 1945–46 another second-round appearance resulted in a 4–2 aggregate defeat to Watford. In 1947–48 they held Reading to a 1–1 draw in the first round, before losing the replay at Elm Park 3–0. The club won another Athenian League title and the FA Amateur Cup in 1948–49, with the following season seeing another FA first-round defeat, this time 2–1 to Watford. In 1950–51 the club won their third Athenian League title; the season also saw them lose 1–0 to Aldershot in the FA Cup first round. Going straight into the first round the following season, they lost 3–2 at Torquay United. In 1952 they rejoined the Isthmian League, and after finishing as runners-up in their first season back in the league, they were champions in 1953–54. They won the league for a fourth time in 1960–61. After finishing bottom of Division One in the 1974–75 season Bromley was relegated to Division Two. In 1976–77 the club appeared in the FA Cup first round for the first time in over twenty years, losing 7–0 at Swindon Town. Division Two became Division One in 1977, and the club was promoted to the Premier Division after finishing as runners-up in 1979–80. They were relegated to Division One again in 1984–85 but returned to the Premier Division as Division One runners-up in
1985–86. Another relegation followed in 1989–90 but was followed by an immediate return to the Premier Division as Division One runners-up in 1990–91. In 1996–97 they qualified for the FA Cup first round again but were beaten 3–1 at home by Enfield. Bromley was relegated to Division One again at the end of the 1998–99 season. A fourth-place finish in 2004–05 saw them qualify for the promotion play-offs, and after defeating Metropolitan Police on penalties in the semi-finals, they beat Horsham 3–1 in the final to earn promotion to the Premier Division. In 2006–07 they finished as runnersup in the Premier Division, again qualifying for the promotion play-offs. A 1–0 win over AFC Wimbledon in the semi-finals and a victory against Billericay Town on penalties in the final saw them promoted to the Conference South. The season had also seen them reach the FA Cup first round again, eventually losing 4–1 at Gillingham. Further appearances in the first round were achieved in 2009–10 (against Colchester United), 2011–12 (Leyton Orient), 2012–13 (Fleetwood Town), and 2014–15 (Dartford), but they were beaten on each occasion. In 2014–15 Bromley won the Conference South, earning promotion to the renamed National League, where they have remained since. Another FA Cup first round appearance in 2017–18 saw them defeated by Rochdale. The season also saw them reach the final of the FA Trophy, where they lost 5–4 on penalties to Brackley Town after the match had ended in a 1–1 draw.
NEIL
SMITH
The Manager
SMITH STARTED HIS CAREER AT TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR AS AN APPRENTICE But after a year had failed to break through to the team. He went on loan to Gillingham and then signed for them permanently in 1991, going on to make over 200 appearances. During his time at the Gills in 1995, Smith was on the verge of a move to then Division Two club Brentford. However, when the fee was set at £50,000 by a tribunal, then Brentford manager David Webb felt he could find better value elsewhere, hence the deal fell through and Smith remained at Gillingham for two more seasons. He moved to Fulham in 1997 for two seasons, making 75 appearances and scoring two goals. He scored once against Colchester in the league and also scored against former club Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup, before joining Reading, where he made some 65 appearances in a three-year spell. He was part of promotion-winning sides at Gillingham, Fulham and Reading. Smith briefly joined Stevenage Borough in 2002 before Glenn Cockerill bought him to Woking where he played a vital part in the escape from relegation that season. He made 180 appearances for Woking and had a short spell as caretaker manager before being released in 2007. He signed for Bromley in 2008 before calling time on his playing career. On 19 July 2008, Kingfield hosted a benefit game for Smith to celebrate the six years he spent at Woking. Smith joined Isthmian League Premier Division club Maidstone United as a player on 18 October 2008 following his release from the coaching staff at financially troubled Grays Athletic. He made his debut in the FA Trophy 1st qualifying round tie against AFC Hornchurch.
MANAGERIAL CAREER Smith was appointed joint caretaker manager of Woking in March 2007 with Graham Baker following the departure of Glenn Cockerill, helping the club to stay in the Conference National. On 4 May 2007, after failing to get the job full-time, Smith was released by Woking following the appointment of Frank Gray as manager. Two weeks later Smith was appointed as the new manager of Conference South team Welling United following the departure of Adrian Pennock to Stoke City. He held the job until 7 January 2008, when he was sacked. Shortly after this he signed for Bromley as a player. Smith joined Grays Athletic as part of their coaching staff on 21 February 2008. He then joined Tim O’Shea, with whom he worked with at Grays, at Croydon Athletic as a coach and again followed O’Shea to Lewes as his assistant. Following Lewes’s relegation, he rejoined Bromley at the start of 2011–12 as part of the coaching staff. Following the departure of Mark Goldberg in February 2016, Smith took over the role on an interim basis. On 4 April, after a successful run of games, Smith signed a two-year contract to become the club’s new first-team manager.
Mark Cousins THE 32 YEAR OLD SHOT STOPPER SIGNED FOR BROMLEY IN JUNE 2019. He spent his youth with Fulham and Colchester United, before turning professional with the latter and spending nine years with the Essex outfit, also enjoying loan spells at Whitton United, Staines Town, Enfield Town and Yeading. In June 2014, Cousins made the move to then League Two outfit Dagenham & Redbridge, and spent four years with the Club, making a total of 126 appearances in all competitions. At the end of the 2017-18 season, Cousins followed former manager John Still to Barnet, where he spent the entire 2018-19 season, playing a key part in the Bees’ impressive FA Cup run, making a total of 53 appearances in all competitions with 20 clean sheets along the way.
Kory Roberts ROBERTS, 22, HAD BEEN AT WALSALL HAVING JOINED THEIR ACADEMY AGED 16. He made his Football League debut in December 2016 and went on to make 20 League One appearances in the 2017-18 season. Following a spell on the sidelines due to injury, Roberts made his return to first team football in the 2019-20 season and now bolsters Neil Smith’s defensive options.
Michael Cheek THE 27 YEAR OLD STRIKER IS A SEASONED PERFORMER AT NATIONAL LEAGUE LEVEL Having made his name at Heybridge Swifts, before moving on to Chelmsford City. After a successful one and a half season spell with the Clarets, which saw him score 35 goals in 66 appearances, he made the move to Braintree Town. Cheek remained with the Iron for two seasons, scoring 42 goals in 98 games. His prolific spell earned him a move to fellow Essex outfit Dagenham & Redbridge, where he spent a single season, in which he scored twice in a 5-1 win over Bromley. In the Summer of 2018, Cheek signed for Ebbsfleet United and spent last season with Bromley’s Kent Rivals, scoring 16 goals. Upon signing, Cheek commented; “It’s great to be here. It’s an ambitious Club and I can’t wait to get going.”
Ben Williamson THE LAMBETH BORN FRONT MAN FEATURED FOR THE RAVENS IN PRESEASON BACK IN THE SUMMER OF 2017 He scored in a 2-1 win over a Crystal Palace XI. Since then, Williamson has represented fellow National League side Eastleigh, helping them into the playoffs last season. The 30 year old has a wealth of Football League experience. Having started his career with Worthing, before spells with AFC Bournemouth, Hyde, Port Vale, Gillingham and Cambridge United, before making the move to the South Coast. Williamson was delighted to make the move to Hayes Lane in November 2019.

WREXHAM AWAY POSTCARD Wrexham is an away day I’ve always enjoyed so much. My first trip to Wrexham was on the 22nd February
2014, I only know this because it’s the first picture on my Instagram page and upon reflection, it pretty much
sums up what my teenage years were going to be! Usually I prefer to be closer to the pitch but there is something fun about Wrexham’s away end and being so high up. I’ve only been to Wrexham 3 times but the 2 most recent have been summer trips and the warm sun in Wales definitely contributes to my enjoyment of this fixture. However, even though I love this trip, I also hold a bitter memory. After my enjoyment of our first trip to
Wrexham, I was very excited to return the season after on the 14th February 2015. My Dad agreed to it and I
was buzzing. However, just TWO days before the game, my Dad was sent to cover a conference and ended up in Australia on the 14th whilst I sat at home wishing I was in Wales! I can confirm this is still a very touchy subject in my household and a missed trip my Dad is still making up for 7 years later!
Something I like about Wrexham is the way you come in to what seems to be quite a small, low key ground but as
soon as you walk on and up those stairs you realise it’s actually a pretty decent ground not necessarily what you typically expect in non-league. The fact the away fans are adjacent to a large number of home fans too means the game can always have a bit of atmosphere and life rather than feeling very separated.
On my first trip to Wrexham we won 1-0 with Jake Hyde providing the goal. I’ll be honest, it wasn’t the most
spectacular goal as they left their back post unmarked. However, we played well down the wing to get the ball in for the shot. On my most recent trip to the Racecourse Ground at the start of August Bank Holiday in 2019,
we came away with a 1-1 draw with Sparkes neatly finishing after an exceptional cross from Jack Taylor. Us fans definitely enjoyed that goal! My parents and I celebrated the win on the sunny day by getting an ice cream before we headed home.
I honestly don’t know why I enjoy Wrexham more than any other away day but it is always one I look forward to so much. Maybe because it’s not that far from Leeds so always manages to feel like a proper day out (probably
because it’s in a different country!) I was happy with our result against Wrexham on the 27th, I actually predicted that score before the game! The team performed well and showed a lot of good qualities. Although a 0-0 draw in the rain may not seem like the most desirable game, I did spend my evening wishing I was in Wrexham – although this time round Dad was free of the blame!

What’s the Buzz Josh Palmer England manager Gareth Southgate has admitted to his concerns about potentially suffering from dementia in the future. This came after Sir Bobby Charlton was recently diagnosed with the condition, becoming the fifth member of the 1966 World Cup winning side to be diagnosed, with the other four having died since 2018. Southgate, now aged 50, had an 18 year playing career, playing as centre back at the likes of Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Middlesbrough, as well as featuring 57 times for England. A 2019 study revealed that former professional football players were three and a half times more likely to get and die from dementia that other people in the population.
This week has seen Greg Clarke step down from his positions at both the FA and FIFA. Clarke had been chairman of the FA, as well as vice president and UEFAs representative on the council at FIFA, but has now stepped down from the positions after using “unacceptable” language that he used to refer to black players. Clarke used some offensive terms to reference black people in from of a government select committee. Clarke was also criticised for some other comments that he made, referring to gay players, people from black and Asian communities, and young female players. He was also reported to have intended to continue on in his positions at FIFA, but opted to resign after a phone call with UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin.
Last Wednesday saw Argentina legend Diego Maradona released from hospital following his successful operation on a blood clot on his brain earlier this month, having originally been admitted to the Ipensa clinic in Buenos Aires with anaemia and dehydration. With alcohol withdrawal symptoms keeping him in hospital for a longer period of time, he has now been sent to a recovery clinic to treat his alcohol dependency. The 1986 World Cup winner, now 60 years old, is only allowed several close friends as visitors during his rehabilitation period. During his playing career, Diego won the Copa del Rey, Copa de la Liga and Supercopa de Espana treble in 1983, and with Napoli won Serie A in 1987 and 1990, Coppa Italia in 1987, the Supercoppa Italiana in 1990, and the UEFA Cup in 1989.

England international Joe Gomez is now likely to miss the rest of the season, after picking up a serious knee injury. The Liverpool defender, 23 years of age, sustained the injury on Wednesday, in an England training session, ahead of the Three Lions’ friendly against Ireland on Thursday. Liverpool later revealed that he had undergone a successful surgery in order to repair a damaged tendon in his left knee, which will potentially leave him out of action for at least the majority of the season. This comes as bad news for the Reds, who already find themselves without another of their centre backs, in Virgil van Dijk, who is also out down to a long term knee ligament injury.
Stockport County have been forced to postpone their away trip to Dagenham and Redbridge today, and their home tie against Eastleigh next weekend due to several positive Covid 19 cases amongst the squad and playing staff. The side were on a raised alert after playing Weymouth on 31st October, with the Terras reporting a large number of positive cases last week, going into isolation. However, their FA Cup match against League 1 side Rochdale last Sunday still went ahead. The Hatters reportedly still expect their FA Cup second round tie against National League rivals Yeovil Town on 28th November to still go ahead as planned.
Pryce Griffiths, the former newspaper wholesaler and former Wrexham fan and chairman, has this week died, aged 96. He is most famous for rescuing the Welsh side from bankruptcy in 1988, when he became the majority shareholder. Under his stewardship, the sides’ fortune would quickly change, despite finishing bottom of the Football League in 1991. Shortly after joining the club, he would appoint Wales international Brian Flynn as manager, where he would spend over 12 years in charge before leaving in 2001. During that spell, he would guide the club to a famous victory over Arsenal in the FA Cup, as well as developing the clubs’ Racecourse ground and new training ground at Colliers Park. In 2002 he stepped down from his role as chairman, after almost 25 years as a club director, before later becoming a life vice president.

Match Report 1 BARNET FC
0 BURTON ALBION
THE BEES MADE IT INTO THE SECOND ROUND OF THE EMIRATES FA CUP after a hard fought 1-0 win over League One side Burton Albion. After taking an early lead through Wes Fonguck, the Bees had to hold on, especially after going down to ten men before half time. Despite this, the Bees held on for a historic win and a place in the next round.
HOW IT HAPPENED There was a positive start to the game from the Bees, controlling the ball well and not letting their underdog status affect them in any way. The Bees continued to control the play, building up patiently before they finally got their chance, which they took with full conviction. Some brilliant hold up play from JJ Hooper, allowed Fonguck to get a shot away, which he buried into the top left hand corner to give his side the lead after only ten minutes. The League One outfit weren’t offering much of a threat in the game until a free kick from Joe Powell was nearly put in at the far post by Sam Hughes and five minutes later Scott Loach had to pull off a strong save to deny Lucas Akins. Chances started to come few and far between, as the half entered the final 15 minutes, though the Brewers were controlling the bulk of the play, with their main outlet coming from set-pieces. With two minutes to go in the half though, it was the Bees who nearly doubled their lead. Hooper done well to race pass some
Burton defenders and was inches away from finishing, only to be denied by Kieran O’Hara, who pushed the ball out for a corner. A relatively positive half for the Bees, ended in an unfortunate manner, when Matt Preston was shown a straight red card for pulling down his man as he raced through towards goal. Being down to ten men meant a slight change in formation, with Harry Taylor moving into fill in at centre back at the start of the second half. The Brewers were going to do all they could to take advantage of the extra man and nearly equalised shortly after the restart, when Niall Ennis cut inside before firing a shot just wide of the mark. The Bees were doing all they could to contain the added pressure, defending resolutely, despite the flurry of opportunities which the away side were having. The task became even harder for the Bees, when Elliot Richards left the field, after picking up an injury, with about 25 minutes of the game to go. With 15 minutes to go, the Bees remained stubborn in their efforts to deny Burton a goal, but were given a big let off when somehow Kane Hemmings struck the crossbar from a yard out. Loach’s goal was being peppered with chances, but he was doing superbly to push away Burton’s attempts, including a powerful one from substitute Charles Vernam, which Loach managed to save with his chest. Just before the game entered five minutes of additional time, Burton probably had one of their best chances to score, if it wasn’t for another fingertip save from Loach. Despite not having much of the ball in the second half, captain Harry Taylor broke away, but couldn’t keep his shot down. This didn’t matter though, as the Bees managed to weather the storm and secure a place in the next round of the Emirates FA Cup.
