SIAN OSMOND
HEAD COACH SIAN OSMOND
SIAN OSMOND
Sian, we are back in cup action this weekend against AFC Wimbledon Ladies. What are your thoughts heading into this one?
“The recent cup game has given us a great opportunity to give certain players some minutes.
“We know it will be another tough match.
“Having come off the back of a disappointing result last at Crawley, it gives everyone extra motivation to put things right in the County Cup.”
“I am expecting a competitive fixture, and with it being a cup competition, it adds some excitement to the game.” “They have some great individuals and players that we know of and are a well organised team.” Is back-to-back cup games a welcome distraction? “Knock out tournaments always add a different element to games. “We are all looking forward to it as it gives you something else to focus on.” Given the fact AFC Wimbledon Ladies are in the league below, how important is it for the players to remain focused? “They are definitely going to want to get one over on us and will want to go as far as they can within the competition. “ Wimbledon will want to prove themselves against competition in the league above them. “They have lots of quality throughout the squad and we will not underestimate them.” Being a London derby, do you think that will add anything to the game? “There always is when local teams play each other, especially within a County Cup competition.
As it was such a heart-breaking defeat last weekend, how have the players picked themselves up and what has the atmosphere been like in the team? “The players have been disappointed and there has been a lot of self-reflection within the group. “We have analysed what we needed to improve on, and the players have also gone away to work on things individually. “It was really frustrating as we conceded two goals in quick succession at the start of the second half of the game, but we have certainly learned from it.” “The togetherness in the squad allows the results like that to add strength to them.” We have made the recent signings of Jade Bell and Shayla Burgess. How pleased are you to get those deals completed? “It has been great because we knew that we needed to bring in some strength and depth in the goalkeeper position. “Shayla is a fantastic goalie who is technically capable of playing in the Women’s National League.
“We are hoping to be dominant within the game and come away with a win.”
“We have kept our eyes on Jade Bell recently and caused us loads of problems when we played MK Dons last month.
We have a busy league schedule coming up, including a long trip to Plymouth. What sort of team can we expect to see for this cup competition?
“She is very quick and is good on the ball, so I am really excited to have the deal over the line.”“The togetherness in the squad allows the results like that to add strength to them.”
“It has been an interesting month because we have not had any league fixtures to focus on.
WHAT’S THE Buzz
WHAT’S THE Buzz With the FA Cup First Round having taken place last weekend, the draw for the second-round proper has been made. Crawley Wasps, who beat the Bees deep into second-half stoppage time, have been handed an away tie at Ipswich Town, and AFC Wimbledon have an away tie at Hashtag United. Other notable ties include former WSL sides Sheffield FC hosting Huddersfield Town, Oxford United travelling away to Ashford Town (Middx) and Lincoln City travelling to Leafield Athletic. Other local ties include QPR vs Billericay Town, Gillingham vs Actonians, Hounslow vs Clapton Community and Stevenage vs Loughborough Lightning.
Police last week released Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Aminata Diallo from custody without any charges after allegations that she attacked team mate Kheira Hamraoui. The France international, who has previously played in the USA with Utah Royals and in Spain with Atletico Madrid, was arrested by Versailles police earlier in the month after accusations that she was involved in incidents. The 26-year-old has since insisted that she is innocent and denies attempting to physically injure Hamraoui, reportedly using two masked men to drag her out of her car and assault her on 4th November. Hamraoui is also a French international, with her CV also listing Saint Etienne, Olympique Lyonnais and Barcelona, and is currently in her second spell with PSG.
Former London Bees star Danielle Lea has made another move abroad, this time to Israel with Bnot Netanya. She spent last season in Italy’s Serie A with Pink Sport Bari. Bnot finished second in the Israeli top division last season.
WHAT’S THE Buzz
WHAT’S THE Buzz Manchester United have announced that they will be playing their second ever game at Old Trafford in March 2022. The game is the second women’s fixture United will play at their 74,140 capacity stadium, although the first, against West Ham United last season, was played behind closed doors. Everton will visit the Theatre of Dreams on Sunday 27th March with a 12pm kick-off.
With it still being too early in the competition to confirm exactly which sides have qualified for the quarter-final, the group stage of the UEFA Champions League is at its’ halfway stage, with three out of the six ties having been played. Chelsea lead group A, with two wins and a draw giving them seven points, two more than VfL Wolfsburg. Juventus find themselves in third place, with a win, a draw and a loss, with Swiss side Servette Chenois bottom of the group with three defeats. Group B predictably has Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, with the French side having the advantage after beating the Spanish in the game between the two sides. Group C is topped by Barcelona, followed by Arsenal. 1899 Hoffenheim are in third place, whilst Koge are bottom having lost against all three opponents. The final group, group D, has seventime winners Olympique Lyonnais topping the group, with Bayern Munich five points behind in second. BK Hacken are third, with Benfica being the surprise bottom side. The top two sides from each group qualify for the quarter-final.
WHAT’S THE Buzz
This week has seen the first players introduced into WSL Hall of Fame. Kelly Smith, Fara Williams and former Bees Manager Rachel Yankey are the first three players to be inducted. The trio have a combined 418 appearances for the England national team, with a total of 105 goals, as well as 14 Great Britain caps at the London 2012 Olympics.
Rangers go into this weekend top of the SWPL table after beating Partick Thistle 7-1 at home on Wednesday night. The result sees the side win all five of their opening five fixtures, with 15 points, as well as overtaking both of their city rivals Glasgow City and Celtic, who have both won four and drawn one (against each other).
A report published by Sky Sports and leaders in Sport say that interest in women’s football – and women’s sport as a whole – increased by 21% during the pandemic. The report also shows that 24% of men said that they watched more women’s football now than they did pre-pandemic 18 months ago.
