From the Manager
GOOD EVENING ALL AND I HOPE YOU LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING A REACTION FROM OUR TEAM As we take on Kings Lynn Town this evening. On that note, I’d like to welcome Kings Lynn to The Hive this evening, I think they are a great addition to the league and look forward to a good game this evening. I want to start my notes with passing on my sincere condolences to all of Ray Clemence’s family, friends and loved ones, following the deeply sad news that he has passed away. He was one of football’s good guys and was held in high regard by any one who met him. He’s a historic figure for our Club and we are all saddened by his passing. I am immensely frustrated with how things played out on Saturday afternoon. We were not at it in the first half and did not play at
the standards we have shown in previous matches. We improved slightly in the second half but left ourselves with a mountain to climb. We have to be better this evening and eradicate the individual errors we are making, as they keep costing us. I know the boys will want to put in a better showing this evening and I hope you enjoy the match. Thanks for your continued support.
Peter

RAY CLEMENCE
I AM SURE YOU ALL KNOW OR HAVE READ ABOUT THE PASSING OF ONE OF FOOTBALL’S GREATS AND TRUE GENTS, RAY CLEMENCE MBE. Ray spent 18 months at our club, and instantly his charm and friendliness warmed Underhill. He has legendary status at both Liverpool and Tottenham and was adored at Barnet too. Ray arrived at Barnet in January 1994 thanks to chairman David Buchler, to assist then player-coach, Gary Phillips. Gary, along with acting Chairman Ricky George had performed miracles the previous summer and during the tough season with all its administrative turmoil which saw the club eventually relegated from Division 2. The club and fans were rejoicing on the performance at Chelsea in the FA Cup and Initially the general feeling among us was that Gary was being stepped over, as Ray naturally became the focal point, at least from the press angle. By the following August Ray was given the managers reins and Ray used his extensive contacts and knowledge to sign up some outstanding talent – many now in Barnet FC folklore. Linvoy Primus, Lee Hodges, Maik Taylor, Sean Devine and of course Dougie Freedman. These new players, and Ray’s style, pulled us out of the doldrums, and fast, attractive football with lots of goals returned to Underhill. Freedman was Ray’s finest hour with Barnet, and the League Cup 1st leg tie with Manchester City and Dougies first minute goal was one of the most exciting nights, certainly of my 50 odd years supporting the club - Dougie also became his son-in-law! Ray was born in Skegness in 1948, and his youth career was with Notts County. He joined Liverpool via Scunthorpe United in 1968 as back up to Tommy Lawrence. He made 665 appearances while at Anfield, winning the League 5 times, the European Cup 3 times
plus the UEFA Cup twice, amongst other domestic trophies. He joined Spurs in 1981 where he won another UEFA Cup and an FA Cup winners medal during his 330 appearances. He also won 61 England caps, which, as one of the most well-known quotes in football goes; it would have been another 100 if it were not for Peter Shilton! The feeling and tributes on our message board all seem to mention the fact that Ray was a very approachable, lovely man who only left us in August 1996 as his friend Glen Hoddle asked him to become the coach of the goalkeepers for the national team. How could he possibly turn that down? I will reveal he told a rather fortunate bunch of fans in the social club, who had gathered around him, that even though his wages were about to become considerably more than a lower league manager, the money was not the object, it was the prestige and pride he would have, and he did not wish to leave Barnet, but he had no professional choice. I believed him; he was genuinely sorry to have to move on. Ray had been diagnosed with prostate cancer as far back as 2005, and had battled it with the bravery he had shown as a goalkeeper, and according to his friend Ricky George, “Ray kept coming back after treatment looking better than ever, time and time again. His old Spurs buddies were amazed at how fit he looked.” He passed away peacefully on 15th November; he was 72.

The Captain JAMES
DUNNE
From the Captain GOOD EVENING EVERYONE AND I HOPE YOU ARE ALL WELL Ahead of tonight’s match with Kings Lynn Town. I would like to start my notes by passing on my sadness about the news that Ray Clemence sadly passed away at the weekend. I know he was held in high regard by many people at the Club and I send all my best wishes to his loved ones at this really difficult time. I am hopeful that I’ll be back soon, the injury is nothing too serious. We are all frustrated with Saturday’s result and performance, we were quite simply not good enough, particularly in the first half. Bromley played well and deserved their win, now it’s down to us to bounce back this evening. We’re going ok but we really want to kick on now and that starts this evening. Kings Lynn are of course a newly promoted side and they’re finding their feet in this league. They’ll be disappointed with their scoreline on Saturday and we have to be aware that they’ll want a reaction themselves. It’s all about us taking the game to them on our home pitch and playing at our very best this evening. Thanks for all of your support from home and hopefully we’ll see you soon. In the meantime as the festive period approaches, please make sure to check in with your loved ones during this tough time. Cheers for now,
James Dunne
Walking football BARNET OVER 50’S As we await the return of our Friday sessions with Zoom meet ups We look back to the origins of walking football. There are many recorded events , but one of the earliest fixtures that has the most coverage goes back to Saturday 14th May 1932, when Derby Railway Veterans and Crewe Railway Veterans met at the Baseball Ground. At the time, ( with thanks to ) The Derby Telegraph described the match by writing ‘Bald heads, white moustaches and red faces were the order of the day, while one man played in spectacles. The combined age of the Derby team was 741 and of Crewe 733’. It finished 1-1 between the two sides with Steve Bloomer, Derby County’s all-time leading goalscorer, even playing his part on the day as the referee at the age of 58. I wonder how the Barnet Walking Football team will be viewed in 100 years as the founding fathers of our team. We hope to be back to continue our legacy soon!

It is not really known when King’s Lynn first had a football club that represented the Town Just that Lynn Town was reformed in 1879 having gone out of existence a few years earlier. At that time there were a number of football teams in King’s Lynn, the most notable probably being Lynn United, Lynn CEYMS and Lynn Alexander – the later competing in the Norfolk County Cup along with Lynn Town in the 1881-82 season. At one time King’s Lynn could claim to be the centre of football in Norfolk. It was in the Black Horse Public House, in Chapel Street, that the Norfolk Football Association was formed in 1881 and prior to the arrival of professionalism in Norwich in 1905, King’s Lynn were regarded as probably the strongest team in the County. The town had it’s own football newspaper – The Lynn Football Star, which was published from 3 October 1903 to 23 January 1915, three copies of this are in the King’s Lynn Museum. In those days, it is said the football team had the nickname of “The Shrimpers”, although there seems little evidence of this in match reports, and their colours were not always as they are now with black and white being mentioned in some newspaper reports. The match report for the game against Cromer Town, on 17 March 1923, says that King’s Lynn “played in their new colours of old gold and royal blue” so perhaps this was the first time the now traditional colours were adopted, although black and white stripes were readopted in the mid 1920’s.
TODAY’S OPPOSITION
Early league action saw the Club play in the Norfolk & Suffolk League and additionally in the East Anglian League, winning the former on 8 occasions. Football in those days had something of a charm to it, in that the outcome was never too certain. Indeed on more than one occasion it is recorded that the visiting team refused to complete the match for fear of missing the train home. It is said, that after the First World War, Lynn Town changed their name to King’s Lynn, although photographs of the team in 1908 shows them under a KLFC banner. It wasn’t until 1935 – 36 season that Lynn changed competitions by joining the Eastern Counties League and also the East Midlands League. After the Second World War King’s Lynn played in the United Counties League, but on turning “Professional” for 1948 – 49 season they moved back to the Eastern Counties League and achieved the League and League Cup double in the 1953 – 54 season. A brief spell in the Midland League, where they played such “Midland based” teams as Rotherham and Scarborough, they joined the Southern League for the 1958 – 59 season. King’s Lynn geographical position, and the structure of Non League competitions, has always meant a fair degree of travelling, whether it be to Taunton and Poole or Gateshead and Workington. A restructuring of the non league system at the end of 1979 – 80 season saw King’s Lynn moved to the Northern Premier League. This was quite a remarkable promotion as the 1979 – 80 season saw us finish in 8th position in the Midland Division of the Southern League. Not surprisingly the first season in the Northern Premier League was a struggle, finishing in 19th position. The following season saw a very creditable 5th position finish, followed by a 9th position finish and winning the Northern Premier League President’s Cup. Unfortunately it was a trophy King’s Lynn were never allowed to defend as they were moved back to the Southern League for 1983 – 84 season. Their return South saw them finish in 6th position and finishing Runners Up the following season, the promotion contest being decided on the last day of the season. There then followed a number of very disappointing seasons with King’s Lynn being relegated to the Midland Division at the end of the 1986 – 87 season. Further relegations might have followed but for other teams either opting to join other leagues or going out of business. King’s Lynn won the Southern League Eastern Division in the 2003 – 04 season, but failure to win a “Play-off ” against the Western Division Champions, Redditch United, for a place in the restructured Conference feeder leagues, resulted in King’s Lynn taking a place in the revamped Southern Premier League. The 2005 – 06 and 2006 –07 seasons saw King’s Lynn reach the Play-offs for the Conference Regional Leagues, but once again just could not achieve the final step upwards. In the 2007 – 08 season, King’s Lynn were successful in securing promotion to Conference North after winning the Southern League title on the last day of the season, with a victory of 2 – 0 at Merthyr Tydfil, finishing 2 points clear of Team Bath. Unfortunately, due to ground grading issues, the Club was demoted after finishing in 17th place in the 2008 - 09 season.
The following season, playing in the Northern Premier League, the Club could not complete their campaign, due to being wound up in the High Court in December 2009 over an unpaid £77,000 amount owing to HMRC. In January 2010 the Borough Council of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk awarded the Lease of The Walks Stadium to the Company running the very successful Speedway Team in King’s Lynn. The Club was reformed for 2010 – 11 season, joining the United Counties League, where they were runners up, with 103 points, to St. Neots Town with 105 points. The following season 2011-12, King’s Lynn Town finished on 106 points, runners up to the U.C.L. Premier Division winners Long Buckby, who accumulated 108 points. King’s Lynn Town were promoted to Step 4 of the Contributory League System, joining The Northern Premier League in 2012-13 season, based on the highest average points per game achieved by all Clubs who finished in the runners up position at Step 5. In their first season back in the Northern Premier League, King’s Lynn Town won the Division One South title with 92 points, moving into the Premier Division, Step 3, for the season 2013-14, finishing in the top half of the League. In the 2014 – 15 season they continued in the Northern Premier League, but in May 2015 the F.A. switched them back into the Southern League, for the 2015 – 16 season, in which the Club had played for several seasons from the 1950’s. In their First Season in the Southern Football League Premier Division the Club finishing in a creditable 9th place. In June 2016, Lynn F.C. (King’s Lynn Town F.C.) was purchased by Mr. Stephen Cleeve. The 2016 -17 season saw the First Team finish in 13th place of the SFL Premier Division. Ian Culverhouse was appointed Manager and in the 2017 – 18 season King’s Lynn Town finished in second place, achieving 100 points, to Hereford United who won the Division with 113 points. In the “Play Off Final” against Slough Town, who finished on 99 points in the League, King’s Lynn Town Lost by score line of 2 – 1. In the 2018 – 19 season after a less than favourable start in the new Level 3 Central Division of the Southern Football League, the Club appointed Rob Back and Neil Fryatt, Club Stalwarts, to turn the First Team around, which was carried out successfully. Ian Culverhouse returned to the Club in early November 2018, the Club finished in second place. In the Divisional Play Off games the Club were successful against Stratford Town and Alvechurch progressing into the “One Off ” Super Play Off game at Warrington Town, winning by 3 -2 AET. With the Super Play Off Victory the Club were promoted into the National League North Division for the season 2019 – 20. After a curtailed Season in 2019 – 20 King’s Lynn Town were declared Winners of the National League North Division and Promoted to the National League (NLS 1 The Conference). In the Seasons 2018 – 2019 and 2019 - 2020, Player Adam Marriott was the leading Goalscorer in both leagues in which the Club has played.

What’s the Buzz Josh Palmer Solihull Moors have been forced to postpone three of their recent and upcoming games, after a member of their first team squad tested positive for Covid 19. Their home game against FC Halifax Town on Saturday was postponed, as were tonight’s trip to Torquay United and Saturday’s trip to Weymouth. The side are next due in action on Saturday 28th November, when they travel to Morecambe in the FA Cup second round. It was then revealed yesterday that the Halifax match will now be played on 15th December. All of the Moors’ players and backroom staff are currently self isolating.
It has now been officially revealed that Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are to be the new owners of Wrexham. This comes after a vote by the current owners, the Wrexham Supporters Trust (the WST), saw more than 2000 members vote, with a massive 98.6% going in favour of the takeover. With over 2000 members being eligible to vote, 1809 approved the deal, with just 26 being against it, as well as there being nine abstentions. The deal will see the RR McReynolds Company LLC take 100% control of Wrexham Football Club Limited, with the actors hoping to turn the side into a ‘global force’. However, the deal is still subject to the final agreement, as well as league and FA confirmation.
Former Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, England and of course Barnet legend Ray Clemence unfortunately passed away this week. The former goalkeeper was born in Skegness in 1948, and would play in the academy at Notts County, before moving on to Scunthorpe United in 1965, where he would go on to play over 50 times. He would join Liverpool in 1967, and over the next 14 years, would win a whole range of honours, including five First Division titles, an FA Cup, a League Cup, five Charity Shields, three European Cups, two UEFA Cups and a European Super Cup, as well as making just under 500 appearances. In 1981 he joined Tottenham, playing another 250 games, and winning another FA Cup, UEFA Cup and Charity Shield. He would also play 4 times for England Under 23, and 61 times for the main side, playing in the 1980 European Championships and 1982 World Cup. He also received an MBE for services to football in the 1987 birthday honours service. After some time coaching the England national team, he returned to Tottenham, becoming a coach, and even became joint manager alongside Doug Livermore for a short time. He joined the Bees in 1994, as manager alongside Gary Phillips, before taking sole charge.

Paul Lambert, the manager of League 1 side Ipswich Town, has been fined £1,750 for making comments about referee Kevin Johnson in a post match interview. Lambert ahs admitted to the improper conduct charge given to him by the FA, after comments made after his sides’ 1-0 away defeat to Lincoln City on 24th October. This comes shortly after both Ipswich and Lincoln were fined after a melee took place in the 94th minute of the game in question, with Lambert also being given a one match touchline ban and another £1,000 fine for some “abusive and insulting” language aimed towards a match official during the incident.
Former Leeds United, Sheffield Wednesday and Oldham Athletic midfielder John Sheridan has found himself a new club this week. The 56 year old, who has previously been in charge of the likes of Plymouth Argyle, Newport County, Notts County, Fleetwood Town, Carlisle United and Oldham across five separate stints, now takes over the helm at Swindon Town. The Robins become Sheridan’s fourth club of 2020, having departed Chesterfield on 2nd January, just 6 days shy of a year at the club. He was then out of work until July, when he took over at Irish side Waterford, a post in which he left in September to return to England with Wigan Athletic. This only lasted two months, before joining Town.
Manchester United have complained to the FA after their Women’s sides’ game away at Everton in the Continental Cup was postponed, with manager Casey Stoney saying that she “felt rules were breached”. The game was set to take place on 4th November at Walton Hall Park, but was postponed approximately 24 hours before the game was due to kick off, due to safety “concerns around the stadium”. It has also been reported that United did received a request to switch the venue of the game, and to host it at the Leigh Sports Village (the Red Devils’ home ground), but this was turned down as it was supposedly not feasible to accommodate within the short time frame.
Philip Webb mascot April 1995 with Ray. Ray was great with him, spending time chatting in his office and then taking him into the players lounge to meet the players and then passing him over to Dougie Freedman, ( Son -in – Law ) to look after him . If Ray had not gone back to working for England F.A. he might have become our greatest manager.

Match Report 1 BARNET FC
THE BEES FOUR GAME UNBEATEN STREAK CAME TO AN END AS BROMLEY TOOK ALL THREE POINTS AT THE HIVE LONDON. Barnet started with purpose and on the front foot and looked to extend their unbeaten run to five games after their FA Cup victory over Burton Albion.
HOW IT HAPPENED Bromley had an early penalty shout waved away by the referee, much to the disbelief of the travelling side. But their disappointment was forgotten when they took the lead from a corner in the 13th minute. Joe Kizzi headed the away side in front with a clinical and accurate header. On reflection, the Bees will be disappointed with the goal from their point of view. Bromley quickly settled in the game and looked composed on the ball, whilst Barnet struggled to get their foot on the ball and get any meaningful possession. Former Bee Mark Cousins was first called into action when new boy Anthony Wordsworth shot was deflected awkwardly towards goal but the Bromley ‘keeper did well to claw the effort round the post.
3 BROMLEY FC
Bromley then doubled their lead through James Alabi firing it into the top corner of the Barnet net. It was the least Bromley deserved after an impressive first half display. The Bees tried to get themselves back into the game before the break but struggled to build-up any momentum with their attacking intent. Both teams started the second half loosely, with neither side able to dominate possession. Bromley extended their lead just before the hour with a fine finish from Michael Cheek. Bromley could’ve made it four when Frankie Raymond went through after a blistering counter-attack. On his 150th appearance for Bromley, his dink was wide of the mark. Michael Petrasso got a goal back for the home side, with a great finish to beat Cousins at his near post. The goal gave the Bees a glimmer of hope, but they couldn’t find a quickfire second goal to really bring them back into the match. Bromley took the sting out of the game in what was a professional performance from the away side. Barnet offered little to get back into the game. Substitute Alfie Pavey had a golden chance to pull one back, but his effort was saved by Cousins. That was the Bees final chance to get anything from the game as the afternoon ended with a disappointing defeat.
