HEAD COACH SIAN OSMOND

SIAN OSMOND

Sian, we are back in league action at The Hive London on Sunday which provides us with a chance to bounce back to winning ways following a disappointing defeat at Oxford United? “I am excited to get back going and we will try to rectify the performance from last week with a strong performance against another good team. “All the girls are looking forward to getting back on the pitch and I am hoping that we can play at our best.” Having responded previously with a win at MK Dons after the defeat to Ipswich, I am sure you will be looking for the same this week? “Within the group we have resilience and have shown that we are able to bounce back.

How important is it that we show our character and not let our heads drop after last week’s result? “It is massively important as every single game in this league counts. It is such a tight league at the minute. “With the announcement of there being four teams going down, it is crucial that we compete for every single point we can get from every fixture. “The girls know it and they are ready to go out there and do that.” A goal for Lauren Heria last weekend, who has been a real consistent performer in recent weeks?

“All of our players have worked hard this week in training on things that we needed improve on in preparation for Sunday.

“I was really pleased for her to get the goal from an individual perspective but obviously just disappointed that it came at the end of a frustrating result.

“I am hoping we will be in a much better place this weekend so that we are ready to go.”

“She has been fantastic and an absolute workhorse for us since coming in.

How has the week in training been and what are we looking to improve upon from last week’s result?

“Lauren is really eager to continue learning and always asks lots of questions. She has been a pleasure to work with.”

“It has been really good. It was also very tough as there was disappointment brought in at the start of the week off the back of the result, but we have all moved on pretty quickly.

How are we looking on the injury front?

“We have had some good discussions in the group and have looked at our shape when we are out of possession.” What are you expecting to see from Portsmouth, who have had an interesting season so far? “They are a quality side who enjoy having large spells of possession and will definitely be a danger on the counter-attack, where we have had a look from working with the analyst team. “Portsmouth have a team full of very strong individuals and I think for them they are like us in terms of the turnover of players. They brought in a lot of really high-quality players in the summer.” “We are expecting a tough fixture from them.”

“Unfortunately, we did pick up a few knocks last weekend but the medical team have been fantastic working really closely with the girls to try and get them ready. “I think we might have a few fitness tests on Sunday.” Just finally, back in front of our home fans at The Hive London on Sunday which you must be looking forward to? “We say it every week but it is always fantastic and special to see the fans coming down to watch us play at home. “We are buzzing to be back at The Hive London and hopefully we can see some more fans down there to cheer us on.”

WHAT’S THE Buzz

Carli Lloyd made her 316th and final appearance for the USA national team last week, with a 6-0 win against South Korea at the Allianz Field in St. Paul, Minnesota. During her 22-year career, the 39-year-old spent her entire playing career in the USA, bar a loan spell at Manchester City in 2017. She played more international fixtures then she did Club league fixtures. During her international career, she won six Algrave Cups, two CONCACAF Women’s Championships, four CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying tournaments, two Olympic gold medals, an Olympic bronze medal, two World Cups, a World Cup runner up, four SheBelieves Cups and a Tournament of Nations.

Wales smashed their record attendance when 5,455 turned out at the Cardiff City Stadium to see the side thrash Estonia 4-0 in a 2023 World Cup qualifier. The scoreline could have been much higher with the Welsh having 31 shots on target. The result put the side up to second in UEFA group I, with three wins and a draw from their first four games. They remain on 10 points, two behind group leaders France and three ahead of third place Slovenia. First place qualifies automatically, whilst second qualifies for the play-offs. Also in the group are Greece and Kazakhstan.

Last Saturday saw the Three Lionesses return to Wembley for the first time since the Coronavirus pandemic. The side claimed a 4-0 win under the arch, with Beth Mead scoring a hat-trick within 14 minutes, scoring goals on the 64th, 74th and 78th minute, with Beth England netting another on the 72nd minute.
