DEAN BRENNAN

I N T E R I M

HEAD COACH DEAN BRENNAN

Dean, how have the players dusted themselves off after last week’s defeat? “We have had a positive response, but we will find out how positive it has been on Saturday at 5pm. Training has been good this week and the attitude from the players has been excellent. “I have no issue losing in that manner because we dominated the game and got in some great areas. I think we had 14 attempts on their goal, compared to the two they had on ours. “I told the players how important it is to understand the way we want to play, and if we had the cutting edge on Saturday, we would not have to rely on the refereeing decisions that do not not go our way. “The main thing we spoke about is that we need to score when we are on top and how we manage the game better in those kinds of scenarios.” Torquay United reached the play-off final last season and despite them being mid-table at this stage, it should be a tough test on Saturday? “They are a top team with a fantastic manager. They have had a lot of injuries over the past two seasons, so they have been unlucky. “Gary knows this league well and they are a good side. They have some talented players and it is going to be a very difficult test, against a team, in my opinion, who are going to finish in the top five.”

DEAN BRENNAN

A lot of people came away from Wealdstone wondering how we had lost. How can we avoid that again on Saturday? “We need to score when we are on top and cut out the errors. We made two individual errors at Wealdstone, but there were some key moments when we hit the post and got in some great areas. “Football is like that sometimes and it happens at every level. Once we continue to perform in the manner we are, we will win more games than we lose.”

We are offering £10 tickets for Saturday’s game which is a great initiative? “It is brilliant from the football club, so hopefully we can bring a decent crowd in. “We want to give our fans something to sing about and they were outstanding last week. You know you have played well when your supporters clap you off, even when you have just lost. “Our players are giving everything and we will continue to do that.”

With a busy Christmas schedule ahead of us, how important is it that we continue to pick up points at home and make The Hive London a fortress?

The fans were superb at Wealdstone and they will be there in their numbers this Saturday against Torquay. How important can they be in games like this?

“I look at points per game and we are a bit below where we need to be collectively over the whole season, so we need to continue to pick up points.

“They are huge and we are starting to create a real bond between our players and supporters.

“Grimsby have lost four on the bounce and out of all the teams, they were performing the best. Out of nowhere they just lose four in a row and that is how difficult the division is. “The players have the right attitude and application and we have to be at it in every minute of every game.”

“The fans watch training and they interact with the players because we have an open door policy here. “We want to create a togetherness which is massive and it is the only way you can have success in this business.”

BARNET OVER 50’S OUR OVER 70S ENTERTAINED LEYTON ORIENT 70S AT THE HIVE LONDON. Age is just a number as our over 70s entertained Leyton Orient 70s at The Hive London. Our England 70s duo Paul Strom and Herby Riches were in fine form as was Bill Charge in goal! We proved to be too strong for the O’s as Richard Fincher scored four times and we won 7-1 in the match which lasted an hour. There was an international flavour to our Friday session as we welcomed Peter Lundgren of Walking Football Sweden and Joe Moses from Los Angeles Walking Football as we look to future fixtures overseas. We are very grateful to our player Stephen Brown who donated a defibrillator to the team in memory of his friend Michael Glynn. Michael’s son & daughter presented us with it after our Friday session, which was an amazing gesture. We have also set up our latest group, The Monday Night Curry Club, visiting a different venue each week. This has been a great success!

MASON-CLARK

TODAY’S LOOK AHEAD

Ephron, thanks for joining us. How has the week been in training? “It has been a really positive week for the whole team. It is a great environment to be in because of how competitive it is. “We are all feeling good and are looking forward to this weekend’s match.” You have played a part in every league game this season. How much confidence does that give you considering we have had a change of leadership? “My confidence is definitely growing and that is helped when I am playing regularly. “Dean Brennan has been great because he is always pushing me to the best of my abilities.” What has the competition for places been like in the team so far this season? “It has been fantastic. There are a lot of new faces in the squad which has been different, but we are all gelling well. “There is a good togetherness here and we have all been pushing each other to improve.” Torquay United reached the play-off final last season and are currently sitting mid-table. What are you expecting to see from them?

We have lost once in our last five home league games. How important is it to continue to pick up points at The Hive London? “We need to continue to win points at home so that we can move up the league table. “This can be helped through our supporters as well, who turned out in their numbers at Wealdstone last weekend. “They can be our 12th man in big games like this, so it would be positive for them to continue backing us all the way.” What has it been like to play in front of our fans during this campaign? “It has been fantastic and they are really supportive of us. “With them behind us, we are looking to make The Hive London a fortress for the rest of the season. We played well in spells last weekend but unfortunately fell to defeat. How do we avoid that from happening again? “I thought we were unlucky with the decisions that went against us. “We need to show character and continue to work hard and the positive results will come.”

“Torquay are a really strong side who are very fit and physical.

The bond between the players and staff is there to see, which must be exciting to be a part of?

“I think there is enough talent in our team to match them and make it a competitive game.”

“The training sessions are fun and there is a good atmosphere around the place. “I am pleased to be working in that type of environment.”

SUPPORTERS Association

BARNET FC Supporters association Here is an update from the BFCSA summarising our latest meeting with Chairman, Tony Kleanthous. South Stand: The building of the new South Stand would most likely take place in the next close season. We asked about the future of terracing and The Hive London and Tony explained that it was unlikely that the East Stand would become terracing because it is likely to be replaced by a completely new stand which would also replace the existing main building. As for the South Stand, safe standing was dependant on conditions for grants being changed and Tony was hopeful this might happen, but at present the South Stand was planned to be seating. Legends Bar It was agreed that we should make this a supporters ‘hub’ starting with memorabilia, scarfs, shirts, pennants etc. There are lots of items at The Hive London we could use in addition to any supporter’s contributions. This will be a perfect opportunity for willing volunteers to be involved in a specific project. We will organise this and more details will be available soon. Beer Tony agreed that additional beers could be added but they would have to be a Heineken brand. We agreed to do a poll with members to see what they would like and we’re pleased that many people have had their say. Make sure you are signed up as a member to receive items like this. To do so, head to www.bfcsa1926.com. We also discussed long queues and a poor matchday experience and agreed that more work needs to be done to improve the experience. The Tea Hut New caterers have been taken on and today will be their second game. Hopefully, we see an improvement in service and quality, but we will be monitoring this.

Hive Membership Tony is interested in implementing a new Hive Football membership which is under development, so we will hopefully have more information soon. We are also looking at more possible ticket promotions like the £10 tickets offered for today’s game. Furthermore, we agreed to hold a monthly Supporters Association ‘Player of the Month’ award with one of our members awarding it on the pitch to the winner. Drums Approximately 70% of people who responded to our twitter poll wanted the drums back and we’re now sourcing a volunteer. Feel free to contact us if you would like to put yourself forward. Audio Commentary The Chairman is ready for this but needs to find reliable people who will be able to do a good job and commit to every game. He doesn’t want to charge for this service either. Also, Barnet FC have sponsored Belmont Youth who are now known as Belmont Bees. This idea is to work with them and encourage the kids to come to matches. Daniel Martin (Head of the Hive Foundation) has got on board several other local teams and schools who attended Saturday’s game. The focus is on the next generation of supporters. Look out for the latest episode of BeesPod where Daniel Martin joined Mem to discuss the community work more in depth.

THE OPPOSITION

TODAY’S OPPOSITION

The history of Torquay United begins with the merging of Ellacombe, Babbacombe and Torquay Town. The elevation of Exeter City and Plymouth Argyle to the Southern League at the end of World War I prompted the emergence of a new Torquay United in 1921.

The new era of manager Eric Webber saw United come within goal difference of winning promotion to Division Two for the first time ever but we were pipped by Alf Ramsay’s Ipswich Town on the final day of the 1956-57 season.

Six years later, we were crowned Western League champions, with the club successfully applying for membership to the Football League. Our first game was a 1-1 draw with Exeter at Plainmoor, with the players now changed from the early light and dark blue ensemble to a black and white kit similar to the famous Newcastle United strip.

A change to the league structure and abolition of the regionalised system placed United in the newly-formed Division Four and the date of April 27, 1960 would finally see the club win promotion from the bottom league.

Now referred to as the Magpies, United’s first ever league goal was a penalty from Herbert Turner, but that credible early draw was swiftly followed by a painful 9-1 defeat at Millwall. Our first league campaign ended with United finishing bottom of Division Three (South). Fortunately, our re-election to the league was immediately confirmed and the 1930s was a decade of quiet consolidation, with the club never finishing higher than tenth place. When the Football League resumed after World War II, United found a goalscoring hero in the form of Sammy Collins, who helped us finally break the top-ten duck in 1949. Collins would go on to become the club’s record scorer with 219 goals from 379 games. he famous Yellow and Blue shirts we all love today became a reality in the 1954-55 season and the new-look kit played its role in a fabulous run to the fourth round of the FA Cup. After humbling the mighty Leeds United 4-0, a record 21,908 crammed into Plainmoor for a narrow loss to Huddersfield, and that remains our highest ever attendance.

Players like Don Mills and the Northcott brothers of Tommy and George were the heroes of the day and we survived our first season in Division Three before dropping down the following year. The emergence of young goalscorer Robin Stubbs kept us near the top of Division Four and 1965 paired us with the mighty Tottenham Hotspur in the third round of the FA Cup. Just over 20,000 people witnessed a stunning 3-3 draw, courtesy of a brace from Stubbs. Although the replay at White Hart Lane was a heavy loss, the episode was a fitting end to 15 years of Webber management. Frank O’Farrell swept in as his replacement and guided the Gulls back to Division Three in 1966 and we were only denied a place in Division Two by a poor finish to the 1967-68 season. We were eventually relegated back to Division Four in 1972 and it would be 19 years before the club graced the third tier again. During that time, the introduction of a relegation system to the Conference was obviously a concern in the 1986-87 season and we only escaped the drop by holding Crewe to a 2-2 draw on the final day,

THE OPPOSITION

in a match that was held up by defender Jim McNichol being bitten by a police dog named Bryn. Paul Dobson would go on to equalise for the Gulls in the time subsequently added on. Cyril Knowles assumed the helm for the following season and steered United to the newly-created play-offs, but we lost out to Swansea 5-4 on aggregate. Among those helping the Gulls to battle

Having finished the 2014/15 campaign in mid-table, manager Chris Hargreaves was placed on gardening leave and ex-Eastwood and Mansfield manager Paul Cox was put in charge of 1st team duties with a reduced playing budget for the coming season.

away at the right end of the table was teenage winger Lee Sharpe, who was sold to Manchester United at the end of the campaign.

United started the season with a 1-0 win over Macclesfield but further wins were hard to come by and Cox resigned from his post in September 2015, before the Board of Directors appointed former player Kevin Nicholson to turn the season around and save the club from relegation.

The Sherpa Van Trophy became familiar to the Yellow Army when Dean Edwards scored twice over a two-legged semi-final against his hometown club, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and took United to Wembley, but Bolton were too strong in the Final.

The summer of 2016/17 was a season of change at the Club. Kevin Nicholson signed fourteen new players to revamp the playing squad. However, after three defeats in the first four games, Kevin Nicholson and the Club parted ways.

A wonderful start to the 1990-91 season took us clear at the top before Christmas but a lull in form saw John Impey introduced as manager. A finish of seventh place booked a place in the play-offs and Burnley were defeated in the semi-final.

After an extensive search for a new management team, the Club appointed Bath City manager Gary Owers as Head Coach, and former Reading U23 coach Martin Kuhl as his Assistant on September 13th 2017. Despite strengthening United’s squad with a number of signings, Owers was unable to lift United out of the relegation places, and despite a brief upturn in results and performances, United’s fate was sealed following a 1-1 draw away to Hartlepool, as the club was relegated to National League South.

Wembley once again beckoned and Blackpool were the opposition. Edwards and Wes Saunders scored in a 2-2 draw and goalkeeper Gareth Howells would score in the penalty shoot-out before Dave Bamber missed for the Tangerines. In 2003/04 Leroy Rosenior’s reign saw him guide a talented young side to promotion following a 2-1 last day win at Southend. Sadly, the return to English football’s third tier was brief and a period of decline for the club resulted in a disastrous campaign that saw us relegated out of the Football League in 2007, the first time in 80 years we had been a Conference outfit. A major revamp behind the scenes rescued the club from the brink of extinction and a new consortium containing lottery winner Paul Bristow helped to stabilise a financial crisis at Plainmoor. On the pitch, the Gulls were left disappointed at Wembley again, this time losing the FA Trophy Final to Ebbsfleet. The pain was heightened by a play-off semi-final loss to bitter rivals Exeter City, but the following year was one to savour. Former midfielder Paul Buckle was in charge and he steered the Gulls to the fourth round of the FA Cup and a play-off final win over Cambridge. The Yellows were back in the Football League and a season of consolidation was followed by two thrilling campaigns. The final year under Paul Buckle ended with United reaching the League 2 play-off final at Old Trafford but Stevenage proved too strong. The 2011-12 season, the first under Martin Ling, the new manager brilliantly rebuilt his squad and only missed automatic promotion on the final day before losing to Cheltenham in the playoffs. Sadly, Martin Ling fell ill midway through last season and Alan Knill took over on a temporary basis, steering the Gulls away from relegation on the final day of a traumatic campaign. The club then parted company with Ling and installed Knill as permanent boss. The Alan Knill era proved unsuccessful and a poor start to his permanent tenure ended with the club sacking their manager in December 2014. Chris Hargreaves was appointed boss in the January but the mountain was too much to climb, and United suffered relegation to the Conference.

United’s board and management insisted that their stay in the sixth tier would be a brief one, and Owers was immediately given the funds to put together a side capable of bouncing back at the first attempt. However, one win in the next six games, culminating in a 1-0 home defeat by Chippenham, signalled the departure of Owers, and within 24 hours, former Yeovil Town and Bristol City manager Gary Johnson was announced as his replacement. There was surprise and delight in equal measure amongst United’s fan base at the appointment, and Johnson’s impact was immediate. Three wins and three draws preceded a record-breaking ten match winning streak, which lifted the club up from 14th into 1st place. What seemed like a season-long battle for top spot ensued, with United, aided by the goals of reinvigorated striker Jamie Reid, fighting it out with Woking for pole position on a weekly basis. As the season entered its final stages though, it was Johnson’s men who held their nerve as Woking faltered. A late equaliser in the match between the two sides looked to be vital, and sure enough, a 2-0 victory over Eastbourne the following weekend secured the club’s first championship title since 1927, and with it, promotion back to the National League at the first attempt. Two years later, despite playing almost the entirety of the 2020/21 campaign behind closed doors, Johnson’s men went agonisingly close to securing a return to the Football League with a 2nd-placed finish, before a memorable 4-2 Play-Off semi-final over Notts County at a raucous Plainmoor set the stage for a Promotion Final against Hartlepool United at Ashton Gate. Once again, The Gulls’ never-say-die spirit was on full display in front of a national TV audience, as goalkeeper Lucas Covolan’s last-gasp header sealed a 1-1 draw, to send the match into extra-time. Sadly, penalty kicks would eventually deny United of the victory many felt they deserved. With the club now in better shape than it has been for many years on and off the field though, Torquay United’s loyal band of supporters can finally look ahead to the future with optimism once again.

THE OPPOSITION

THE OPPOSITION

MANAGER

GARY JOHNSON There was surprise and delight in equal measure amongst United’s fan base at the appointment of Gary Johnson’s in September 2018, and his impact was immediate. Three wins and three draws preceded a recordbreaking ten match winning streak, which lifted the club up from 14th into 1st place. Under his guidance they remained there for the majority of the season, before finally clinching the National League South title, and with it promotion, in April 2019.

MARK HALSTEAD TORQUAY UNITED’S GOALKEEPER MARK HALSTEAD 30 year-old Halstead began his career at Blackpool, emerging from the bench in March 2011 to make a memorable Premier League debut for The Tangerines against Carlo Ancelotti’s Chelsea. Since then, Mark has gone on to represent the likes of Stockport, Shrewsbury and Morecambe amongst others, and made 16 appearances for the latter as they won promotion from League Two last season.

JOE LEWIS CENTRE-BACK JOE LEWIS FOR TORQUAY UNITED Joe Lewis returned to Plainmoor on a permanent basis in January 2021, following an impressive loan spell with The Gulls in 2019/20, making 28 appearances before the National League campaign was curtailed early in March. During his previous spell, Joe showed himself to be equally adept in a number of positions, and his arrival provides manager Gary Johnson with more welcome selection options, as United strive to go one step further in 2021/22

ASA HALL TORQUAY MIDFIELDER, ASA HALL Midfielder Asa Hall became the first United captain in over 90 years to lift a championship trophy, following the 2018/19 National League South title success. Hall brings a wealth of experience to the squad having made over 300 first team appearances turning out for teams such as Luton Town, Oxford United, Shrewsbury Town, and Cheltenham Town. He was part of Gary Johnson’s squad that earned the Robins a return to the Football League in 2016, prior to being reunited with his former manager again in 2018. Asa’s calming presence, not to mention important goals, helped steer United towards the National League South summit last season, and he was recognised for his influential performances by being named in the 2018/19 National league South ‘Team of the Season’. United’s captain will now be hoping that history repeats itself once again as he leads his team once again in 2021/22.

DAN HOLMAN DAN HOLMAN, WHO IS A FORWARD BY TRADE Dan Holman is a player well known to Gulls boss Gary Johnson, after his prolific spell at Cheltenham Town saw The Robins seal the National League title in 2015/16. Having shown a glimpse of his undoubted quality following superb strikes against Tiverton and Chippenham during a pre-season trial, the Yellow Army will dearly be hoping his can reproduce more of the same during 2021/22.

WEALDSTONE FC AWAY POSTCARD Saturday saw us make a short trip to our local rivals Wealdstone FC. My Dad and I travelled down from Leeds the night before so that we could make a day of it. On Saturday morning we made the journey to Ruislip on the tube and arrived around midday. We headed straight to the pub for lunch and some pre-match drinks. As the afternoon went on, there were a fair number of Barnet fans filling up the pub and everyone seemed up for the game. Dad and I took the short walk to the ground just after 14:00 and joined the already packed away end behind the goal. Both sets of fans observed the Last Post just before kick-off and the game was underway. We started the game well with early chances from Rob Hall and Adam Marriott. Aston Oxborough had some saves to make at the other end, but we dealt with everything confidently. Throughout the first half we carried on attacking and came close on the 26th minute when Mason-Clark’s effort hit the post. In the final 15 minutes of the first half, Wealdstone found their feet in the game but our defence and Oxborough dealt with any threat as we went into half time at 0-0. It was a bit too busy to bother moving at half-time but we caught up with other fans about our first 45 and the overwhelming feeling was positive and hopeful we would carry on as we were. As the second half got underway, it was clear this half would be a bit more even with both teams having their share of chances. The introduction of Wes Fonguck to the game meant we continued to drive forward but it was Wealdstone who broke the deadlock in the 78th minute. After a ball over the top that both Oxborough and Beard went for, Browne was left with an open net to put the hosts ahead. Just 10 minutes later though, the away end was buzzing after the ball ended up in the back of the Wealdstone net following a goalmouth scramble. However, after allowing us to celebrate the goal, the referee went over to the linesman and decided to disallow our goal for a handball. I’m still not convinced that was a correct decision! In the final minutes of the game, we continued to try and push forward to get an equaliser but unfortunately ran out of time and the game finished 1-0. The fans were in great voice throughout the game and stayed to show their appreciation for the squad’s efforts too. After the game, we made our way back to the tube discussing our disbelief at how we had come out of that game without our goal standing! A group of us travelled to Kings Cross for another drink and in the end me, my Dad and Jeanette stayed for a few more hours and had a lovely evening. After we left the pub, my Dad and I went for some dinner before heading back home. Despite being frustrated by the loss and our disallowed goal (I’m not letting that go yet), we had a great day out!

HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH TORQUAY UNITED

HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH

TORQUAY UNITED Barnet FC have won at Torquay’s Plainmoor ground more often than they have lost, while the Gulls have won more often at Barnet than the Bees. The two sides have met on 35 occasions, with the first two matches between the sides taking place in the FA Cup. In 1963/64, Barnet lost 6-2 away (the Gulls were in the fourth tier of the Football League and the Bees in the Athenian League). In 1971/72, Barnet lost 4-1 at Underhill (the Gulls were then in the third tier and Barnet in the Southern League, Premier Division). Since then, all the games have been in the league, with 28 games in the fourth tier of the Football League (up to April 2013) and five games from November 2014 in the Vanarama National League. Only the home game was played in 2019/20 due to the Coronavirus pandemic. In total, Barnet and Torquay have both won on 12 occasions, while there have been 11 draws.

Krystian Pearce played for the Bees against Torquay in November 2012 and subsequently twice for the Gulls against the Bees in 2014/15. Iffy Allen played for both Barnet and Torquay United but didn’t play for either team in this fixture (but he did play for Yeovil Town against the Bees).

At home, Barnet have scored 28 goals against Torquay and conceded 30. At Plainmoor, the Bees have scored 20 and conceded 21. In all games (home and away), Sean Devine has scored four goals for the Bees and Scott McGleish three. Lee Harrison and Paul Wilson have both made nine appearances. The highest attendance at home is 5,623 in 2001, the game that decided who was relegated from League Two. The highest crowd at The Hive London is 1,745 in 2014/15. The best at Plainmoor (4,090) was the first ever league meeting there in 1993. Last season, the Bees lost 2-0 at home to the Gulls in January 2021, but managed what seemed an unlikely 2-2 draw in May. At the time, Torquay looked as though they might win the league and automatic promotion. The Gulls went 2-0 ahead thanks to goals from Jake Andrews and Connor Lemonheigh-Evans, but the Bees came back through goals from Michael Petrasso (a penalty) and Themis Kefalas. The Bees team for the most recent game was: Adam Parkes, Lee Vaughan, Ben Nugent, Ben RichardsEverton, Sam Beard, Themis Kefalas, Harry Taylor, Michael Petrasso (Josh Walker), Sam Skeffington, Ephron MasonClark (Xander McBurnie), Tomi Adeloye. Away fans were not permitted due to Covid-19 and the attendance was 1,561.

CLASSIC ENCOUNTER WITH the GULLS

The GULLS

CLASSIC ENCOUNTER WITH

THE GULLS

If fans wanted to see goals, then our fixture against Torquay United served up a nine-goal post-Christmas extravaganza on 28 December 1992, with the Bees grabbing all three points. The Bees were 2nd place in Division Three (fourth tier) heading into the game and were unbeaten at home that season. Expectations were high, but no one predicted the 5-4 victory that was to follow. The first half was a relatively tame affair by comparison with what was to come. Mid-way through the half, Torquay’s Paul Hall crossed into the box before Richard Huxford messed up his clearance and put through his own net, giving the Gulls the lead. In the 47th minute, the Bees equalised. Derek Payne, Huxford and Gary Bull combined to set up a Brian Stein finish. After 49 minutes, Huxford was brought down by Paul Trollope after a long surge forward into the box, and Bull reliably took the spot kick, putting the hosts 2-1 ahead.

Two minutes later Barnet’s lead was restored. Torquay failed to clear a Huxford cross and Mark Cooper, on for Geoff Cooper, found the net. On 83 minutes, the Bees made it 5-3, with Nicky Evans getting his head to a Kenny Lowe cross. Just when the Bees might have thought the game was in the bag, the Gulls hit back through Duane Darby following a corner. However, Barnet were able to see out the remaining minutes, thanks partly to ‘keeper Gary Phillips.. Barnet went top of the table and despite slipping back later in the season, the Bees still gained automatic promotion by finishing third.

TEAM Bees: Gary Phillips, Richard Huxford, Geoff Cooper (Mark Carter), Mick Bodley, Dave Barnett, Duncan Horton, Derek Payne, Brian Stein, Gary Bull, Kenny Lowe, Paul Showler (Nicky Evans). Attendance: 3,891

After 50 minutes, the Gulls levelled the score when Hall crossed for Adrian Foster to finish comfortably. Then on 55 minutes, Barnet went 3-2 ahead. Bull was played in by team-mate Dave Barnett and was upended by Gulls’ ‘keeper Juergen Sommer in the box. Bull stepped up to score his second penalty of the day. However, Torquay were level again after 65 minutes. Mick Bodley fouled Torquay’s Sean Joyce just outside the box and Trollope scored direct from the resulting free-kick.

ON THIS day 9 years ago (2012): Barnet drew 2-2 with Oxford United in League Two at Underhill. Jake Hyde scored both goals for the Bees as they first led, but eventually had to come from behind. The attendance was 1,626. It was an improvement because earlier in the month Barnet had lost 2-0 to United in the FA Cup, also at home.

11 years ago (2010): The Bees trounced Northampton Town 4-1 in a League Two game in front of 1,918 spectators. Steve Kabba scored a brace, while Grant Basey and Ricky Holmes scored one each. At the end of the season, Barnet escaped relegation by a point, finishing 22nd, and the Cobblers were 16th.

17 years ago (2004): In their promotion-winning season, in what is now the Vanarama National League, Barnet won 3-0 at home to Accrington Stanley, thanks to goals from Liam Hatch and Ritchie Graham. The crowd was 1,990. It was the Bees’ eighth consecutive game unbeaten in the league and were crowned Champions at the end of the season.

23 years ago (1998): In their biggest defeat of the season, the Bees lost 5-0 at Mansfield Town and was seen by 2,965 spectators.

28 years ago (1993): Barnet drew 1-1 at York City, in their one and only campaign in the third tier. The attendance was 2,966 and the Bees’ goal came courtesy of Kelly Haag

45 years ago (1976): The Bees defeated Crawley Town (now in League Two) 2-1 in a Southern League, Division One South game. Terry Price and Mark Tucker, later Chief Executive of Prudential, scored for Barnet in front of 532 fans. Come the end of the season, Barnet were promoted back to the Southern League Premier Division

50 years ago (1971): The Bees beat Kettering Town 4-2 away in the FA Cup First Round Proper. Ben Embery and Les Eason both scored a brace, while Barnet’s Barrie King scored a memorable own goal from 35-yard out. The front page of the programme annoyingly referred to the Bees as “Barnet Town”. Barnet lost in the next round of the cup to today’s opponents Torquay United.

&

CURRENTLY Dean Brennan’s team come into today’s game having lost only one of their most recent five home league games (two wins, two draws), while Torquay have not registered a win in their last five away league games (two draws). The Bees’ last home game (against Aldershot Town) saw two further players, Kian Flanagan and Rob Hall, score their debut goals for the club. That means that 11 different players have now scored for Barnet in the league this season. Only three National League sides have seen goals being scored by more players in league games: Wrexham (13 players) and Grimsby and Dagenham and Redbridge (both 12). Altrincham have also seen 11 different players score. Nine players have scored for today’s opponents Torquay in the league this season. Only five players have scored for Dover, Southend United and Yeovil Town. Barnet fielded a very youthful team in the last home game. The average age of the starting XI was 25 years and 36 days. That compares with the average age of the starting XI on the first day of the season, which was 25 years 222 days. So, the average age was about six months younger, despite more than two months having passed. It’s more than a year since a Bees player has scored twice in one game. The last occasion that happened was 24th October 2020, when Michael Petrasso scored a brace against Leiston in the FA Cup. The most recent hat-trick was nearly two years ago, on 26 November 2019, when Simeon Akinola achieved that feat against Ebbsfleet United. Mitch Brundle remains the only player to have started every compe game for the Bees this season and has played every minute. Ephron Mason-Clark has played a part in every game. Mason Bloomfield, Kian Flanagan, Ben RichardsEverton and Harry Taylor have played a part in all the games bar one.

WHAT’S THE Buzz

WHAT’S THE Buzz

A former Bee got himself on the scoresheet in the FA Trophy First Round last weekend. Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro, now 36-years-old, has been playing for Northern Premier League Premier Division side Radcliffe since March 2020. His side faced a home tie against Nuneaton Borough last Saturday, with Akpa Akpro opening the scoring on the 82nd minute, before being substituted off the pitch just moments later. The hosts would double their lead on the stroke of full time, winning 2-0, and were rewarded with a secondround tie against Tamworth, the first time that they have reached that stage since 2004. Barnet, alongside all the other 22 National League sides, enter the competition in the third round, which takes place next month.

The draw for the FA Trophy Second Round proper also sees several of our local sides in action. These include Uxbridge against Chippenham Town, Enfield Town, who travel to Hanwell Town, Hemel Hempstead Town hosting Stourbridge, St Albans City on the road at Oxford City, Cheshunt going to Chelmsford, Potters Bar Town away to Braintree Town, Bishop’s Stortford at home to Leiston, and Welwyn Garden City at Needham Market. The round takes place on 27th November, next weekend, with the draw for the Third Round proper, where the Bees enter, taking place on Monday 29th November.

Another cup draw taking place this week is the quarter-final of the Middlesex Senior Cup. After our 2-1 away win at Hayes & Yeading United last week, we will now travel to Ashford Town (Middlesex). The two other confirmed ties see Northwood host Bedfont Sports and Hampton & Richmond Borough play Spelthorne Sports. The remaining tie sees Hanwell Town travel to the winner of the only second round tie still yet to be played – Brentford B vs Broadfields United, which should be played this week. These ties will be played in early January, as we look to reach the semi-finals for the third time in four seasons.

The attendance record for the National League has been broken by Notts County. Founded in 1979, this is the 42nd season of the league, which has changed name several times, most notably remembered as the Conference (for good measure the fact that Barnet have won the division a record three times!) The previous record was set by Bristol Rovers in 2015, the season in which we beat them to the league title, where they set a record attendance of 11,085. Last weekend saw Notts County take on Solihull Moors at Meadow Lane, where 12,843 watched the hosts claim a 2-0 win – 1,758 more than Rovers’ attendance.

WHAT’S THE Buzz

Accrington Stanley are set to be investigated for alleged homophobic abuse during a recent match. The incident in question took place at Stanley’s Wham Stadium last Saturday, during the sides’ 4-1 loss to Plymouth Argyle. After the match, Plymouth stated that one of their players had been the subject to constant homophobic slurs, with Argyle goalkeeper posting a message on his Twitter account after the match condemning them. Later, Accrington states that they pride themselves on being inclusive, so would act against the perpetrators if required.

After some trouble between fans at the match between Wrexham AFC and Torquay United last week, North Wales Police have appealed for help to find four men who may help with their investigation into some violent acts committed against some visiting fans at the Racecourse Ground. The Welsh side have already banned a dozen supporters and removed their season tickets after trouble erupted between the two sides during the game on 30th October, which ended 1-1. The NWP have released images of the four individuals that they believe were involved.

The EFL have announced that its three divisions – the Championship, League One and League Two – will all start the 2022/23 season on 30th July 2022. The season will start in July for the first time due to the World Cup taking place in November and December, which will require a mid-season break. They have also announced that the Championship will stop on 12th November and will have a break until 10th December to allow for the tournament, whilst League One and League Two will continue through the World Cup without a break. All three competitions will finish on the weekend of 6th May 2023 as usual, with the playoffs at the end of that month.

MATCH Report

MATCH Report THE BEES FELL TO DEFEAT AT WEALDSTONE FC IN THE VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE, LOSING 1-0. Dean Brennan’s side dominated the opening encounters as Rob Hall received the ball wide on the left-side before whipping an inviting ball towards Mitch Brundle at the back post, who couldn’t quite get on the end of it. In the 15th minute, Adam Marriott came close through a deflected low drive aimed towards the bottom right corner after capitalising from a mix up in the Stones’ defence. George Wickens got down well to palm the shot just around the outside of the post. Wealdstone responded and came close after Hall gave away a free-kick just outside the box. Aston Oxborough was called into action shortly after Jamie Mascoll struck a weak free-kick goalwards, but a cruel deflection off the wall caused trouble for the Bees’ stopper, with only a superb reaction save from close-range keeping the game at 0-0. Just a minute later, Dean Brennan’s side came even closer. Marriott cleverly chipped the ball over the Stones’ defence to Ephron Mason-Clark. He plucked the ball out of the air with flair, lobbed the ball over Wickens but could only manage to hit the post, and after being taken out by the goalkeeper in the process. The second-half began evenly, with a 20-yard strike over the crossbar from Hall the closest either side came to breaking the deadlock. In the 63rd minute Dean Brennan’s side applied pressure on the Wealdstone defence. A dangerous free-kick, just left of the penalty area from Kian Flanagan eventually found Brundle, who saw his acrobatic effort blocked.

In the 77th minute the Stones broke the deadlock. Stephan Browne broke in behind the Bees’ defence and prodded the ball past Oxborough. In the 89th minute, the Bees looked to have rescued a point after Marriott poked home following a goalmouth scramble, however the assistant referee raised his flag for what he deemed to be handball, leaving the Bees to depart Grosvenor Vale empty-handed.

A-Z OF FORMER BARNET PLAYERS

ANWAR UDDIN Anwar Uddin was the first person of Bangladeshi origin to play professional football in England and the first British Asian to be given captaincy at football club in the top four divisions of English football. He started at West Ham United before working his way up through their youth and reserve teams where he was captain. Although highly regarded, as a promising traditional English defender, he failed to make it into the first team and in February 2002, he moved to Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer. His stay was brief as after the collapse of ITV Digital, Sheffield Wednesday could not afford to keep him due to financial difficulties. Uddin moved onto to Bristol Rovers the following summer after only four months at the club. He was an almost ever present in the following season until the end of October where he picked up a serious groin injury, in which he was to struggle with for the rest of the season. After making a few appearances the following campaign he was loaned out to Hereford United and Telford United and then he was released by Bristol Rovers at the end of the season. During the summer of 2004, Uddin signed for Dagenham & Redbridge where he became the captain of the team. At the time, Uddin was just one of only five British Asians playing in the Football League and Premier League. On 1st September 2009, Uddin signed on loan for Grays Athletic. In June 2010, Uddin left Dagenham to sign for the Bees who were currently in League Two. He was named as captain again ahead of the 2010/11 season and scored his first and only goal for Club in a 3 - 1 win at Bradford City on 8th January 2011. In 2011, following the departure of manager Martin Allen, Uddin was appointed as caretaker assistantmanager to Giuliano Grazioli. On 30th January 2012, it was announced that Uddin had his contract terminated by mutual consent and a few days later, he signed for Sutton United. At the end of the season on the 28th June 2012, he signed for fellow Conference South side Eastbourne Borough before retiring from football a year later.
