Welcome once again to our 17th annual on farm sale. We would like to again thank all who have made our program a source for your bull or female purchases. Our repeat customer base grows every year and thank-you to our first time comers. Remember when your mom would say wipe that smile off your face when you did something “naughty”? Well smile all you can because the beef business has never been better, and some say it’s only going to get better, but at this time “status quo” will be fine. Now more than ever your bull buying requirements will pay huge dividends on the right ones. We feel our offering can meet anyone’s needs. They are a powerful set of bulls sired by walking bulls second to none. The strength of our program has always been our herd bull battery and a sound functional cow herd. These bulls have never been creep fed or pampered. The heifer calves were swath grazed from October 15 to December 1. What a set of females we have for you. Plan to attend Saturday April 4th, and expect to see the same quality you have become accustomed to at Crescent Creek. Come prior to the sale and inspect the offering in their large pens, making it a lot easier to appreciate the quality offered or go online and view the video of the sale cattle, it does help. At a modest $2/lb you realize an extra $5400. If you have been paying $4000 for your bulls, this added revenue would allow you to pay an extra $4000-$5000 per bull. As well extra benefits from adequate bull power will mean less open cows, a tighter calving season and more uniformity – these all reflect in higher premiums. As in past years, our bulls have been grown out and never “pushed”. We appreciate the fact these young bulls have to last year after year at your place. The bulls were hand fed a bull ration consisting of high levels of protein and no barley. They were fed to achieve an average daily gain of 3 pounds. Free choice brome hay was also fed. The females were swath grazing from October 15 to December 1st with no added grain or pellets. They were then fed a rolled oat ration to achieve approximately 2lbs per day rate of gain. The vaccination program consisted of Express 5 and blackleg shots. All breeding females & bulls will have had their pre-breeding Express 5 vaccine and blackleg booster prior to the sale. The cattle have had plenty of exercise in large pens, and are very free moving.

For most commercial cattlemen, there are really only four EPDs they need to look at: birth weight (BW); weaning weight (WW); yearling weight (YW); and milk. The others, with perhaps the exception of the carcass traits, are more useful for purbred breeders. Birth weight is the best predictor of calving ease and the birth weight EPD is more reliable than looking at the bull’s own birth weight. A bull with a 65 lb birth weight may have been born early, may be a twin or could have been born to a heifer. These sorts of things are accounted for in the EPD calculation. Weaning weight and yearling weight are easily measured performance traits. A bull with a 10 lb high weaning EPD than another bull of the same breed will sire calves that weigh an average 10 lbs more at weaning. The milk EPD is a maternal EPD. What this means is that it is predicting the performance of the animals daughters, not the sons. The daughters of a bull calf with a +20 milk EPD would be expected to wean calbes that weigh 10 lbs more than a bull with a +10 milk EPD. Obviously, the sons don’t produce milk, but they can pass on superior traits to the next generation. If you want more milk in your herd, choose sires with higher milk EPDs. Comparing animal to animal when looking through the sale catalog is one way to use EPDs; another is to compare to the breed average usually also posted in the sale catalog. It is important to realize that the breed average does not mean that the average animal possesses that particular set of numbers rather that it is the average for each individual trait. If you are looking for a heifer bull then compare the birth weight EPDs to the average birth weight EPDs for the breed. One of the most common mistakes I see is the tendency to focus on one trait when selecting bulls versus balanced trait selection. Cattlemen in the market for a heifer bull will focus on a calving ease breed and then look for a bull with a low birth weight EPD. Likewise, I have seen bulls selected for use on heifers with breed leading WW and YW EPDs. With the exception of what we call curve benders these traits are related. Bulls with really high WW EPDs generally have BW EPDs well above average. Determine which traits are important to you, the choose acceptable EPD ranges for those traits, and realize that tradeoffs may have to be made

After using a semen package, very successfully, on KG Smart One 9116 we knew we wanted a walking bull with the Wisdom 481T pedigree. Our choice on OBI’s recommendation was “Wisdom 1419”. In his first calf crop we knew the choice was a good one. The bulls offered here are predominantly out of heifer’s first calves. The calves come easy with explosive growth later. The muscle patterns of these “Wisdom” bulls are second to none. We know numbers don’t mean the same to everyone but when you get such consistency in a sire group you might have to rethink that theory. The numbers are right, but more important the cattle are an awesome powerful set of bulls. We will have 40 calves by this bull in 2015 we couldn’t be happier. An excellent outcross if you have been buying bulls in the past from us. These bulls come highly recommended for heifers.

Another heifers first calf who has grown into a very powerful bull. His mother is sired by the lookout Huck bull who had a huge impact on our herd. His daughters have become excellent mother cows with perfect udder structure. His Granddam 106M was our proudest moment at the “World Angus Forum” where she won her division of senior cow and enabled us to participate in the hunt for the champion. It is something we will never forget.

When we travelled down to McCumber Angus to purchase our “1136” bull, I was impressed with the set of calves on the ground by “Fortunate Son”, calves with lots of performance for being young calves. When we seen them as yearlings it was even more impressive. We secured some semen from McCumber Angus and the result was outstanding, and the bull bred the same way here, performance to burn. You cannot argue with the numbers here, the cattle are the numbers. He was never promoted as a calving ease bull but as a curve bender. Yearling weight, weaning weight, and carcass weight top 1 and 2% of the entire breed. Truly an outcross for most herds, the nice part the bulls and females are exceptional.

Lead off bull from the Fortunate Son group. Deep sided, thick top, plenty of muscle, the Fortunate Son’s are performance bulls with lots of eye appeal. The Baranda cow family has always been very productive, check these bulls out they are definite alternatives for most breeding programs.

This bull has an excellent pedigree, I once read that good cattle make good pedigrees, there has never been a truer statement. 67X would be a ¾ brother to “Main Event” 6H, the bull that Minburn Angus used with such success. In fact there are quite a few herds that benefitted with the 6H experience. Sheidaghan Anghus purchased half interest in 67X at our sale. When we seen the bull as a 3 year old I knew we needed him back in our program, Tom said yes and we have enjoyed 2 outstanding calf crops here. 67X’s mother 15U is a herd bull producer, her son last year was sold to Spickler Ranch, North Dakota, where he was well received as a herd bull.

When we obtained a few straws of Fortune 425C, it was a definite that they would be used on the Rosebud line of females. 15U was a logical choice when trying to replicate Main Event 6H, and she delivered.

Katie has all the Stumpie’s, not us, again a foundation female. The Fortune 67X females are bred to be good. Some old genetics in Fortune 425C, which are rare finds.
