Sam’s Schluter By MIKE TEAKLE WILLASTON midfielder Sam Walton has been dubbed by his peers as the future of the club. Their recognition came on Monday night after Walton won the 2011 Schluter medal as the best and fairest player in the Barossa, Light and Gawler Football A Grade. Aged 23, Walton polled 21 votes to six votes from 2010 winner, Craig Harvey of Angaston. The medallist is the nephew of Willaston Football Club’s greatest son, the late Trevor McGann. “My uncle was really important in my football (development), second only to my parents who have been fantastic,” Walton said. “As a kid growing up around the club Dean Docherty was the player I most enjoyed watching and playing alongside Shaun Baker who has won a couple of Schluter medals is great as he’s always giving me pointers.” One of the fittest players in the competition, Walton’s work rate is what separates him from the pack. He has the ability to get to more contests than anyone else. For Craig Harvey it was the third time he has finished runner up but he was quick to praise Walton. “He’s had a great year,” Harvey said. “He went in as the favourite, that’s a lot of pressure and he was good enough to take it home.” Baker, Willaston’s captain and Schluter medallist in 2007 and 2009, gave the rest of the league an ominous warning. “He’s the future of our club,” he said. “At just 23 I reckon he could have a couple more medals in him before he’s done. “Sam’s a bit of a comedian and a great guy to have around the club, some of the things he can do on the field are just insane.” The Schluter Medal is named after Greenock’s Schluter family for their involvement in the BL&GFA for more than a century.
