WHAT makes the Barossa truly special will be on show this month during the annual NAB Barossa Gourmet Weekend.

While it’s an opportunity to indulge the taste buds through food and wine, the gourmet event hosted for August 20 and 21, is aimed at the family.

This year about 20 wineries open their doors and picture perfect vineyard settings to host thousands of locals and visitors wanting to share in the experience.

Apart from premium food and wine, the weekend is complemented with a range of entertainment at each venue, including music and fun for the children.

This year is the introduction of some special events guaranteed to delight locals and visitors alike.

Take in a movie at Jacob’s Creek Visitor Centre on Friday, August 19, or relax with selected museum wines at the Penfolds Supper Club.

For those with a culinary yearning, the Regional Cooking School at Yalumba, hosted by Peter Clarke from Vintners Bar and Grill, on Sunday, August 21, will be the hottest ticket in town.

Now is the time to check out the official gourmet map and work out which wineries you hope to visit.

You can start at the cool end of the Barossa at Creed Wines, Lyndoch, and slowly work your way through to Gibson Wines at Light Pass.

Again, the National Bank of Australia will provide support through volunteering roles which includes urging the public to donate to the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation.

According to events manager Samantha Foreman, there’s already a buzz of excitement from wineries in anticipation of the weekend.

“While we hope for perfect weather most of the venue operators are mindful this is a winter time event and can cater for a change in weather,” Samantha said.

She said the Gourmet Weekend is guaranteed to banish the winter blues, so come and experience Barossa hospitality at its best.

THE annual Gourmet Weekend is aimed at those who take their food and wine seriously, according to organisers.

With this in mind they also urge the public to think about a designated driver.

Organisers of the weekend have also liaised closely with members of the South Australia Police to ensure tourists and locals are conscious about the drink-driving message. “There will be a police presence over the weekend and people should choose not to be foolish,� Samantha Foreman said.

In addition, transport options over the weekend have been made available.

There will be coaches departing from Adelaide and Gawler linking with the shuttle bus service in the Barossa. You can start your day at either one of your favourite wineries or at one of the town locations.

With the support of Barossa Wine and Tourism Association, LinkSA will be provide a Park ‘n’ Ride offer to all the participants of the Barossa Gourmet Weekend, where you can travel the whole day getting on and off the shuttle buses where and whenever you like.

Tickets for the shuttle service are $25 per person and can be purchased from the LinkSA depot in Angaston, as well as from one of the friendly drivers on the day. Also, you can pre purchase these from the Barossa Information Centre, Gawler Information Centre, Tanunda Caravan Park and from the Barossa Tourist Park in Nuriootpa.

NEW kid on the block for the 2010 NAB Barossa Gourmet Weekend Pindarie winery made waves when they brought in their haystack.

The successful combination of hay and children has meant the winery, off Gomersal Road, will bring their stack back as part of their hospitality during the event.

Gourmet Weekend events manager Samantha Foreman said the haystack

meant children were happy which in turn equalled happy families.

Kies Winery at Lyndoch will bring out toys for children to play with.

St Hallett will include old-fashioned sack races and entertainment by Splodge, which involves face painting and child friendly fun.

Chateau Tanunda are claiming to have on site the ‘world’s biggest bouncy castle’. They have also organised face painting and fun tattoos.

Whistler Wines will host a disco for the little ones and activities to match.

Also, wineries have been mindful about ‘fussy little eaters’ with kids’ and vegetarian options available.

Dining excellence

WHILE the wines are winning awards at Jacob’s Creek Visitor Centre, so is the Jacob’s Restaurant.

In July the team was rewarded for their efforts in dining after they were presented the tourism award at the annual Excellence for Restaurant & Catering SA awards night.

According to the judges, the centre is a hidden gem, while JCVC visitor centre manager Elaine Ratcliffe, said they were thrilled to receive the award for the second year in a row.

“It is testament to the hard work and passion of our staff who were delighted to receive this recognition from our industry peers. We hope to win again next year to enter the South Australian Restaurant and Catering Hall of Fame,” Elaine said.

Judges’ feedback Food - ‘All the food has a real fresh cooked smell and texture, this reinforced we were going to enjoy a well-prepared lunch. All dishes including sides were cooked with a very good skill. Desserts were innovative, the homemade ice creams had great flavour and texture’.

Service - ‘All tables were set well and uniformly. The use of the room with table positioning was impressive to, so we didn’t feel crammed in the light and airy space’.

Staff members were very courteous and efficient. They displayed very good knowledge of both food and wine and tourist information area.

They were very obliging and well trained but with a friendly warmth.’

Atmosphere - ‘The venue in a cellar door is very buzzy and vibrant.

‘Staff switched between areas but clearly stayed on task in the restaurant. They were able to recommend/upsell their wines that were in the peak of cellaring by the glass to us in the hope (it worked) we would buy a bottle from the cellar door’.

Other comments - ‘The value for money is excellent for the standard of their output of food staff and venue.

This proved to be a very enjoyable experience that I would gladly take visiting guests from overseas or interstate or even locals to see what a hidden gem this venue was. If this venue is designed to promote tourism they have got it right. Well done’.

About 1200 guests, including JCVC staff ate, drank and danced the night away to celebrate the high quality of restaurant, caterers and hospitality professionals that South Australia has to offer.

Hall of fame BAROSSA winery Henschke Wines has been inducted into the Family Business Australia (FBA) Hall of Fame.

The Keyneton winery was one of three South Australian businesses to receive the honour.

The award recognises South Australian businesses that have excelled in their area of expertise and made a significant contribution to the state’s society and economy.

FBA South Australian chapter chairman Kent Aughey said Henschke Wines “exemplified the fundamentals of a successful multigenerational family business.”

“Henschke Wines is one of the longestestablished family wine names in the Barossa Valley, and one of the most recognised winemakers in Australia,” he said.

“Since Johann Christian Henschke purchased the

Henschke winery at Keyneton in 1861, each generation has been dedicated to restoring the international perception of Australian wine as one of quality, diversity and integrity.”

Mr Aughey said the Henschke family is now a member of the select group, “Australia’s First Families of Wine.”

“Henschke is adapting to the needs of the present by establishing long-term ecologically sustainable practices

and is also working towards organic certification for its vineyards,” he said.

“The current fifthgeneration, Stephen Henschke and his wife Prue, continually enhance the family’s reputation by demonstrating an exceptional understanding of winemaking and viticulture, blended with astute business acumen.”

Brewing success FOUR out of the five beers created by a Barossa company have been given the thumbs up.

Barossa Valley Brewing and Brasserie, located at Murray Street, Tanunda, won silver and bronze medals for their Organic Ale and Bee Sting in the category of Draught Ales in the recent Royal Adelaide Beer awards.

The Organic Ale creation involves being hopped four times which helps to create big, bold aroma and flavours, while the Bee Sting’s subtle rounded honey tones add

complexity without excess sweetness to produce a refreshing beer.

The company’s English Special Bitter and Coffee Chocolate Stout also received accolades.

According to the company, most of these beers had only recently been developed, and they were happy with the result.

The awards follow their highest medal achieved for their Organic American Pale Ale at the Australian International Beer awards in 2010.
