PROBLEM-SOLVING DURING THE CONSTRUCTION OF OUR NEW THERMAL GARMENTS

PROBLEM: Even with box construction there is some heat loss through the seams.

SOLUTION: Reducing the number of seams: the side seam was moved forward to the same placement as the pocket.

PROBLEM: The winter darkness is really dark. Reflectors are necessary on the front and back, and must be visable whether or not you have your hood up or carrying a large backpack. SOLUTION: To put the reflectors on the right places; on the back of the hood and in the front of the jacket.

KLÄTTERMUSEN FROM A DESIGNER’S POINT OF VIEW When I jumped on the Klättermusen train I had no idea where it would take me. There’s an incredible amount to discover about the company, not least when it comes to they – our customers – and what they get up to in all sorts of places. You are an unending source of inspiration – for which I am very grateful.

For me, Klättermusen represents something uncompromising in its attitude (which gives me one of my most cherished activities: problem solving) that can’t be found anywhere else in the industry. And there is a genuine desire to drive development forward for the sake of humanity. These are big words, I know. But it’s where the foundation of the company lies, in its refusal to compromise. As you can perhaps understand, it was with great interest and humility that I took on the task of updating large parts of our insulated products. We felt that great progress has recently been made in this area and we want you to benefit from these developments. We questioned everything. Fill, fabric, lining, function and, not least, how we can make our products more sustainable with less

SOLUTION: To reduce the airflow, the elastic is placed inside the sleeve, a little bit up. To avoid sleeve end to get wet, it is reinforced with material that has a water repellent treatment.

A high collar can solve this, but they have a tendency to be too bulky underneath another jacket.

PROBLEM: The location of major arteries in the armpit means that the body rapidly cools/warms up depending on whether that area is protected or not. SOLUTION: An adjustment to the arm opening means that the flow of heat can easily be adjusted when the vest is on.

Brede jacket is our sturdiest and most durable jacket. It is designed for climbing with special emphasis on winter tours and expeditions. This is the jacket that professional guides use because it can take a lot of wear and tear. Brede is cut to allow warm clothing underneath. Combine Brede with Freke Salopettes and you are ready for any expedition. ! THE NAKED TRUTH: Very hardwearing, but not lightweight. This is a jacket for active people who aren’t scared of a snowstorm. Due to their construction, the pockets are not totally waterproof. DON’T USE TOXIC FLUOROCARBONS WHEN THERE ARE SUSTAINABLE ALTERNATIVES Our hats off to Norway, for taking the lead by legislating a prohibition on PFOA (perfluorooctanic acid) in clothing from 2014. The debate on the need to use fluorocarbons for waterproofing outdoor clothing has gone on for a long time. Klättermusen started work on phasing out these toxins in 2004. We welcome the Norwegian courage and would like to provide some guidance and our views on the issue.

ALL KLÄTTERMUSEN’S PRODUCTS HAVE BEEN PFOA-FREE

ALL OUR OTHER PRODUCTS ARE ENTIRELY

SINCE 2008. We started working on fluorocarbon-free products

FLUOROCARBON-FREE. Products that are dirt and water resistant

in 2004 and after four years of pressure, succeeded in convincing all our fabric suppliers to provide us with PFOA-free alternatives. However, we signed an agreement in which we promised no liability if the products contained traces of fluorocarbons, because they could not guarantee that the machines were completely cleaned between production for us and for others. Klättermusen was first on the market with a PFOA-free water proof jacket, Noatun, in 2007. Many suppliers claim that we are still the only brand who wants an alternative treatment for textiles – but now there will be more of us. The Norwegian government has taken a wise decision in prohibiting textile products that contain PFOA. Thank you Norway – stand proud and let’s hope that the EU and the rest of the world follow your good example. We are pleased to welcome our colleagues to the world of more sustainable production methods.

A FEW OF OUR PRODUCTS CONTAIN C6 TECHNOLOGY, i.e. they contain gentler fluorocarbons. This applies to materials where we are not yet at the point of using alternative waterproofing. Products made from these materials are marked with a symbol to show they are PFOA-free. In other words, they are not completely fluorocarbon-free.

BASE AND MID LAYERS ARE ALSO FREE OF THESE CHEMICALS.

These are products that do not need water repellent treatment. They do not contain fluorocarbons, but are not labelled as such. We have chosen not to label them as FC-free because it would be like marketing a bicycle using the slogan “now without CO2 emissions”.

Men’s sperm counts have reduced by 50% since the 1950s, and these substances are a possible cause, but certainly not the only one. Studies have shown that the level of PFOA is increasing in our children. In other words, a new-born child/calf/ foal – whatever the species – has levels that are higher (up to 20 times more) than its mother.

toxic, is not biodegradable and is an endocrine disruptor. Its use in textiles has long been prohibited in the US and the EU. The more carbon atoms, the more toxic the fluorocarbon.

THE PRECAUTIONARY PRINCIPLE. This means that it’s not full speed ahead simply because something isn’t proven to be dangerous.

Japanese textile manufacturer Teijin® has had great international success with the Eco-circle™ recycling system for used polyester fabrics.

Extra stretch forehead panel means the hood follows head’s movements. Ventilation zips under arms. Whistle and compass in a pocket that can be removed and worn around the wrist.

The process is strictly controlled to eliminate harmful by-products, and results in a dramatic reduction of energy consumption and carbon emissions. Recycling polyester can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 77% and energy consumption by up to 84%. Furthermore, the polyester produced in the recycling process has the same high quality as polyester from a virgin source (i.e. from crude oil). This is why Klättermusen are pleased to have Teijin® as one of our material suppliers. With the help of ECO-circle™, we can give new life to old fibres.

Allgrön is our bestseller. It´s soft, stretchy, comfortable and made from recycled polyester. This is the jacket for ordinary outdoor activities when you need good protection with a nice fit. It has plenty of good features, but is not intended for the very extreme user that climbs every day or go on month long expeditions. Skogul pants goes well with Allgrön.

Ask is suitable for fast, sweaty activities when you need protection from the rain. Ask is a 2,5 layer jacket and the material is light. Ask is for the customer that needs an all-around-the-year jacket for many different outdoor activities. If you want to look mainstream, choose another jacket. Ask is for brave-hearts with high demands. ! THE NAKED TRUTH: The front pocket allows you to make full use of the area between the hip belt and shoulder harness when carrying a backpack. The lightweight, two-and-a-half layer material is not as strong as the material in the heavier Brede and Froste, thus life expectancy is shorter for the Ask jacket.

Freke Salopette is the absolute sturdiest and most extreme bibs there is. They are essential for mushers, for expeditionistas and for everyone that want the pants to last for many, many years. You can ski, snowboard, go ski touring, whatever. The Danish defense on Greenland uses them for the Sirius patrol. Get the Freke together with the Brede jacket, there is nothing like them! ! THE NAKED TRUTH: This product is more hardwearing than lightweight, but if you are an active person who’s not scared of a snowstorm, then this is the garment for you. Freke is not very comfortable without long johns underneath.

Massflow is the flow of air through your clothing, MFR is a measure of how much wind a garment lets through when you’re out in the elements. The higher the value, the better the windproofing. DOWN CONCEPT Down is fantastic. It provides lots of warmth and is really light weight. We are really proud of the down products we have produced so far, but we are always looking to improve what we do, especially to push the boundaries of our products functional and environmental benefit.

DOWN GARMENTS MOSTLY CONTAIN goose down, which makes

the garment light and fluffy, and provides exceptional insulation when compared to all other materials. Feathers are often included to compliment the down and to help retain its loft (fluffiness) and maintain its shape, by reducing the compression from the outer fabric. Previously we have used down with a 95% down and 5% feathers mix. The new down is a 93/7 mix and provides the same level of insulation in relation to weight as 95/5. This we know, we have tested it. Furthermore the new down is finer, bluesign® approved and is fluorocarbon-free. Naturally we are very proud to have a down which has the same high performance properties in warmth and weight yet has significant improvements in sustainability. POLYAMIDE IS USED FOR THE OUTER FABRIC as it is a durable and hardwearing fiber that is extremely suitable for down products.

However, as polyamide is derived from crude oil, and thus not at all sustainable, we have been working hard to find alternative solutions. Through the use of Aura Bio, which is based on natural and sustainable castor oil, we have succeeded in reducing traditional oil use by 60%. We are delighted to have found a solution which is better for the environment and sustainable development, but it’s only the beginning! We are always considering ways to increase the proportion of organic material in our products and we won’t stop until the day we have a 100% biologically-based raw material in our polyamide. The new material is a thin, lightweight 10-denier fabric which, thanks to its double ripstop, is very resistant to abrasion and tearing. We have tested this too!

SPECIAL FE ATURES

To obtain a better fit, and suit a number of different shoulder widths, the shoulder has a new design, known as raglan sleeve, which also gives the sleeves a better look.

To avoid cold spots, such as when you bend your arm, the garment has a three-dimensional cut; the outer fabric is larger than the inner fabric to eliminate flattening of the down channels when they are stretched across an elbow or shoulder. Bore 2.0

To avoid the elasticated wrists getting wet and cold, the elastic is now placed internally and a short way up the sleeve. The wrist is also reinforced with waterrepellent material. The internal elasticated wrist provides additional benefits as it is tighter around the wrist and brings the insulation point further down over the wrist. It also makes the end of the sleeve straighter and more attractive.

To minimise the number of cold and weak spots we have reduced the number of seams by moving the side seam to the same position as the pockets.

Box wall construction to minimize cold spots. We have added adjustments to the lower hem of the jacket which are quick and easy to use, even when wearing gloves.

KLÄTTERMUSEN – THOUGHTS FROM OUR DESIGN TEAM

TODAY’S WASTE BECOMES TOMORROW’S PRODUCTS When we embark on developing any new product we always start with a simple question; what is the identified need that our product must meet? Joel, our backpack designer and sustainability manager, considered this question in detail when he started developing on the idea for the Recycling Bag; a practical bag for sorting waste in the outdoors.

THE PROBLEM

THE SOLUTION

- Sweden has a well-developed recycling system which has improved a great deal over the last 15 years, with recycling and sorting facilities at most tourist centers and mountain stations. However, follwing a day of adventure most outdoor enthusiasts end up gathering all their waste in one bag. This posed a problem as it left people needing to sort their waste again when they got back home or at the mountain station, says Joel.

A solution involving roll closure and a number of bags quickly stood out as the innovative approach to develop. This resulted in a bag with a number of compartments which could be placed upright on the floor with a large opening for easy packing and still light and easy to shape. A vital issue, however, was the ability to combine a number of compartments with waterproofing and simple cleaning.

Unpacking and sorting wet, sticky and dirty waste is not ideal and after a long day out is not an enticing prospect. This simple barrier has led to many people throwing all their waste into the combustible waste and leaving the mountains with a bad conscience. THE NEEDS

Based on this problem of storage and sorting, Joel identified the needs that a new product would have to meet: waste sorting in the outdoors storage which does not make other items dirty storage for everything in one place occupying very little space and with an ability to compress the waste during storage

- The next stage was to consider a range of options which may offer a solution. For example I looked at hard boxes, that could be stacked, or a number of linked bags, says Joel. He continues by explaining how the ideas are tested. - To test ideas I usually start by explaining or sketching out the original thought, which should give an overview of the main functions, and how it will meet the identified need. Naturally some ideas are rejected at this stage, but if the idea is good enough I develop the sketches to describe everything in more detail. The following stages, to produce material samples, partial solutions and prototypes, give us a lot of opportunity to scrutinise the idea in minute detail. Along the way, the ideas that aren’t good enough are left behind and the process naturally brings us to the final product, and the solution to the problem.

It is really important to have a dedicated place for your waste. Here Joel is putting paper in the correct compartment in the Recycling Bag.

- The solution was to consider the use of silicone fabric differently. Rather than place it on the outside I decided to break with convention and place the smooth silicone on the inside and move the inner tape to the outside, says Joel. As you would expect, this made the bag waterproof from the inside instead, but still easy to turn inside out for easier cleaning since the compartments can be divided. The Recycling Bag has clear labels for each waste item and what should be placed in each compartment. It is also possible to attach a compostable bag which makes it easy to carry out compostable waste without making you, or the Recycling Bag, dirty. THANKS TO THE RECYCLING BAG 1. You simplify and reduce the potential impact of your outdoor

activity as you know exactly how to manage your waste. 2. You avoid hassle and a bad conscience as you will have already

sorted your waste before you get to the recycling station – making it is easy to throw things in the right place. 3. You will contribute to a circular economy as today’s waste becomes the raw material for tomorrow’s products. - Having dedicated recycling points is only one step in whole process; by using the Recycle Bag we hope that we have answered the necessary need for an innovative link between the outdoors and the bin. I hope that our Recycling Bag will be sold at every mountain station and through its use we will make people’s lives easier whilst also helping everyone recycle more, concludes Joel.

This “deposit” value is up to €20, which will act as an incentive to return the product for recycling. If it’s an older product without a tag, we will accept them for recycling in an environmentally-friendly manner. THE SHOPS HAVE A KEY ROLE in getting the

recycling programme to work. The consumer takes a worn-out Klättermusen product to the shop and get a voucher – money that can be used to buy new Klättermusen equipment in the same shop. KLÄTTERMUSEN – MATERIALS

All Cutan® fabrics have a water column that is measured at more than 20 metres and we have a standard of 5 metres for the tape. The fabrics’ RET value, or diffusion capacity, which describes how well the material allows through vapour and sweat, is 5–6 depending on the thickness of the outer fabric. The lower the value the better, and 5–6 is excellent.

MFR MATERIALS

We have a range of materials that are included in the MFR (mass flow resistance) concept, i.e. materials that are not waterproof, but which are wind resistant and water repellent. The number after MFR states the resistance to airflow through the fabric. The higher the number, the more wind resistant it is. We measure from 0, which is no resistance, like naked skin, to 8, which is our highest value. A higher value than this is endless, i.e. a waterproof membrane, which does not allow through a measureable amount of air.

MAXIMUM SAFETY FOR YOU, MINIMUM IMPACT ON NATURE “Maximum safety for you, minimum impact on nature.” This is Klättermusen’s motto when we choose the materials for our products. We are looking for the difficult combination of function and durability, and work with our suppliers to have recycled and recyclable fibres in as many materials as possible. Our aim is that all our products will one day be recyclable and that as many as possible will have bluesign® approved components. We have succeeded with some, but there is still some left to go.

HIRSITUM PURE is a MFR 8 fabric and is made from 100% organic cotton with fluorocarbon-free waterproofing. Our cotton is tightly woven and has long fibres. The cotton is GOTS* certified (Global Organic Textile Standard). We use two different weights; one is a little thinner at 205 g/m2, and is used for jackets, the other is thicker at 240 g/m2 and is used in pants.

This type of cotton fabric has exceptional properties and was used by the military during WWII. The fabric is soft, silent and comfortable. It has a high level of water resistance. Ventilation through the fabric is perfectly adequate, despite it being perceived as windproof. Dyed cotton always bleeds a little when it is worn and washed, particularly dark colours. This means the garment will eventually have a slightly faded appearance, like jeans. Cotton is biodegradable.

WHAT FOLLOWS IS A REVIEW OF THE MATERIALS THAT WE USE IN OUR PRODUCTS.

WATERPROOF MATERIALS

Klättermusen has its own brand, Cutan®. The material is available as Cutan® Super Stretch and Cutan® Stretch RP, where the RP stands for “recycled polyester”. Both types are waterproof threelayer fabrics with taped seams and good stretch qualities. We also have Cutan® Stretch, which is a two-and-a-half layer fabric of 100% polyamide and Cutan® ripstop which has 2 layers. CUTAN® SUPER STRETCH consists of an inside layer in polyamide

mesh, or net lining, a waterproof polyurethane membrane in the middle and an outer fabric of polyamide and stretch fibre. The fabric layers are laminated to work as a single fabric. The fabric is soft and flexible and has great stretch. It is available in two thicknesses, where the difference is in the outer fabric. CUTAN® STRETCH RP has an inside fabric in polyester mesh, a

waterproof polyester membrane in the middle and an outer fabric in

100% recycled polyester. The fabric layers are laminated to work as a single fabric. The fabric is 100% recyclable and is soft, flexible and stretchy, manufactured by Teijin® and ECO-circle® certified. CUTAN® STRETCH is a two-and-a-half layer fabric in 100% polyamide, with a Polyurethane coating instead of a membrane. CUTAN® RIPSTOP is a waterproof two-layer fabric with a weight

of 68 g/m2. Coating in polyurethane and outer fabric in polyamide that has been woven using a ripstop technique to increase tear resistance. PFOA-free. The membrane in all Cutan® fabrics is entirely free of PTFE and thus fluorocarbon-free. The waterproofing in the outer fabrics in Cutan Super Strech®, Cutan Strech RP® and Cutan Strech® is PFOA-free. We now use C6 technology for waterproofing, but in the future we hope to find a completely fluorocarbon-free method for waterproofing our shell garments.

SCHOELLER® KEPROTEC STRETCH is a MFR 0.9 fabric and is a blend of 11% Kevlar®, 11% stretch fibres, 18% Coolmax® and 60% polyamide. This fantastic material is a weighty 340 g/m2 and is designed to protect motorcyclists in crashes. It has everything: stretch, a soft inside and good wind resistance. The fabric cannot be recycled but its durability and strength are exceptional. The fabric is bluesign® certified.

and wind resistance. The yarn is certified by Global Recycling Standard (GRS), which is a certification that ensures that the yarn has been manufactured from post-consumer waste, rather than industrial waste, and is made by Hyosung Corp. CAVEA is a MFR 5 fabric and is made from 100% polypropylene,

which is a very light, hollow fibre that absorbs almost no moisture. The fabric is certified by Cradle to Cradle™ (C2C). It melts at 160°C (320°F), which means that you have to be careful around open flames, so that no sparks hit the fabric. Clothes made from polypropylene should not be ironed. The Cavea fabrics is easy to recycle with minimal energy consumption, and very little water is used in its manufacture; only 30 ml for one kilo of fabric. Currently available waterproofing agents do not make this fabric more water repellent. We have therefore chosen not to give the fabric any special finishing treatment.

THERMAL OUTER MATERIALS AURA BIO 60 is a fabric with 60% biomass polyamide and 40%

polyamide from crude oil and has PFOA free water repellent. It is a durable and hardwearing fiber that is extremely suitable for down products. The fabric is a thin, lightweight (only 28 g/m²) 10-denier, down proof fabric which, thanks to its double ripstop, is very resistant to abrasion and tearing. AURA ACTIVE fabric is a thin, lightweight (only 28 g/m²) 10-denier

fabric. Made of 100% polyester with a PFOA free water repellent. The breathability is very high and it is perfect combined with insulation material that breathes. PERTEX® is a 100% Ripstop polyamide with a weight of 35 g/m2. The fabric is PFOA-free, downproof and has a tear resistance of 30/16 Newton.

WOOL MATERIALS

Wool fiber have scales, like fish! They have to be removed in order to make the fibre soft and non itchy. We remove the scales from our merino wool fibers using a unique chlorine-free process that’s bluesign® approved.

WINDSTRETCH® is a MFR 2 fabric and is a blend of 70%

WURU FORTE is a 275 g/m2 mixture of 37% merino wool, 46%

polyamide, 20% polyester and 10% stretch fibres, with a weight of 180 g/m2 and fluorocarbon-free waterproofing. WindStretch® is a durable fabric with good wind resistance. We use it in our softshell garments when we need good stretch and a hardwearing surface.

KLÄTTERMUSEN – MATERIALS

REINFORCEMENT MATERIALS

We have chosen to reinforce some areas of our products to increase their durability. This may be on the shoulders for jackets or on the seat for pants. The materials below are never used in an entire garment, but there are other materials that are used for the whole of some products and as reinforcement on others, so the material descriptions are in another section. ICEBREAKER PA is a fabric made from 100% polyamide and is

coated with polyurethane. Fluorocarbon-free waterproofing. ICEBREAKER RP is a fabric made from 100% recycled polyester

and is coated with polyurethane. Fluorocarbon-free waterproofing. SCHOELLER® KEPROTEC is a extremely hardwearing material made from Kevlar® polyamide, coated with polyurethane. DURACOAT™ is a unique surface treatment that Klättermusen

has developed to improve durability. It is a coating that is applied to particularly vulnerable places such as shoulders or elbows, increasing wear resistance by up to five times. The Duracoat™ treatment is very soft and flexible and, because no extra seams or layers of fabric are required, durability improves without increasing the garment’s weight. Klättermusen has used Duracoat™ for many years and is now using it on increasing numbers of products. INSULATING MATERIALS

The down from Klättermusen is a certified waste product from the food industry, which means it is not plucked from live birds, and is of excellent quality. Down garments mostly contain goose down, which makes the garment light and fluffy, and provides exceptional insulation when compared to all other materials. Feathers are often included to compliment the down and to help retain its loft (fluffiness) and maintain its shape, by reducing the compression from the outer fabric. Using a finer quality down with more fill power gives more heat per unit of weight. In other words, a light down jacket with fine down could be warmer than a heavier jacket of poorer quality down. We use three different mixes of down/feathers. All of them are really good. The reason that jackets with Hirsutum Pure cotton as the outer fabric have 80/20 down is that a higher proportion of feathers are needed in the fill to support the heavier fabric. DOWN 93/7 contains 93% goose down and 7% small feathers.

It is bluesign® approved and fluorocarbon-free. A supply chain traceability audit has been performed by IDFL, an independent institute that performs down testing, to ensure that neither live plucking nor force feeding occurs. Fill power 800+ (IDFB/US method) 750+ (EN 12131). DOWN 90/10 contains 90% goose down and 10% small feathers.

Fill power 750+ (IDFB/US method) 700+ (EN 12131).

DOWN 80/20 contains 80% goose down and 20% small feathers.

Fill power 600+ (IDFB/US method) 550+ (EN 12131). PRIMALOFT® SILVER ECO is made of post-consumer recycled

materials and is bluesign® approved. Ultra-fine fibres are specially treated in a patented process and then combined to make an insulating core that is incredibly soft, light and water repellent. PrimaLoft® Silver Eco contains of 70% recycled fibres. It doesn’t absorb any water and is thus suitable for wet weather. PRIMALOFT® SILVER ACTIVE is an insulation made for high

activity; high thermal efficiency is combined with superior breathability and will keep you warm even when wet. No insulation will migrate through the shell fabric and therefore a thin outer fabric with high breathability can be used. BACKPACK FABRICS RETINA BASTA is an amazingly robust fabric, 100% made from recycled polyamide, 210 denier nailhead. The raw materials are old fishing nets and carpets. No new oil has been used in the fabric during its manufacture. The yarn is GRS-certified (which guarantees that it is made from recycled material) and is made by Hyosung corp. It is coated with TPU (polyurethane) and has a water column of at least 10 metres. The fabric is 100% flourocarbonfree. RETINA FORTE is an amazingly robust fabric, 100% made from

recycled polyamide, 420 denier nailhead. The raw materials are old fishing nets and carpets. No new oil has been used in the fabric during its manufacture. The yarn is GRS-certified (which guarantees that it is made from recycled material) and is made by Hyosung corp. It is coated with TPU (polyurethane) and has a water column of at least 10 metres. The fabric is 100% flourocarbonfree. ZIPS, BUCKLES, WEBBING, ETC.

Klättermusen always strives to use the best accessories in its products. This applies to everything from thread to webbing and whistles. Most garments have binding bands at the sleeves and lower hems to avoid wear in vulnerable areas. The binding is either made from polyester or polyamide, depending on the fabric in the garment. We use only high quality YKK zips. Our plastic buckles are also of the highest quality. When we select them we prioritise long length of life and an ability to withstand freezing temperatures. We aim to have material of the same chemical origins in our garments and backpacks, so that our products are easier to recycle.
