YOU
SAVE LIVES
IMPACT REPORT
FISCAL YEAR
2019
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT The pages of this Impact Report reflect a simple truth: You save lives. Not only that, you give hope, you give back, and you make a difference. And for that, we thank you. We thank you because you support the world’s leading brain and spine specialists in their ability to research transformative treatments, educate the next generation of leading clinicians and provide the best patient care available. This leads to a revolution in medicine that makes Barrow Neurological Institute uniquely capable of fighting the most devastating conditions of our time. Yes, you save lives. And for that, we thank you. In 2019 alone, your dedication allowed our clinicians to repurpose a breast cancer drug to target deadly brain cancers. Your sacrifice doubled our stroke patient volume so that we could serve more of those in need. Your generosity drove our specialists to be the first in the world to test Deep Brain Stimulation as a treatment for early Alzheimer’s. Your philanthropy helped more patients receive neurosurgery procedures than any other Institute in the United States. Your loyalty broke ground on the new, stateof-the-art Neuroplex, the place where the next cure will be discovered. Yes, you save lives. And for that, we thank you. So do the thousands of patients we serve and the hundreds of patients whose lives you save each and every year. They thank you for giving them hope, and for giving them life. Please continue on and read about the profound impact you have created this past year. Because there is one simple truth: You save lives. And for that, we thank you. Sincerely,
Katie A. Cobb PRESIDENT, BARROW NEUROLOGICAL FOUNDATION

YOU GIVE HOPE Nick Stump is alive today, thanks to the innovative clinical trials at the Ivy Brain Tumor Center.

T
HE DAY AFTER he graduated with his master’s degree from San Diego State University, Nick Stump was diagnosed with a recurrence of his malignant meningioma.
YOUR IMPACT THIS YEAR, THE IVY BRAIN TUMOR CENTER DISCOVERED THAT RIBOCICLIB, A DRUG INTENDED FOR AGGRESSIVE BREAST CANCER, CAN BE EFFECTIVE IN A NEW DRUG COMBINATION TARGETING RECURRENT BRAIN TUMORS LIKE GLIOBLASTOMA, GIVING NEW HOPE TO PATIENTS LIKE NICK.
Nick was only 26 years old, but fortunately, he was a candidate for the accelerated Phase 0/2 clinical trials program, led by Nader Sanai, MD, the Dionne and Francis Najafi Chair of Neurosurgical Oncology at the Ivy Brain Tumor Center at Barrow Neurological Institute. Patients receive individualized care in a fraction of the time and cost associated with traditional research and drug development. Tumor profiling was used to identify a tailored drug therapy for Nick. The medication, ribociclib, was originally designed to fight certain types of breast cancer. “I am really thankful to be on this clinical trial,” Nick says. “I have doctors who take the time to look at genetic profiles to see that this is a potential new application for this medication – not just for patients like myself, but for those going forward.”
BRAIN CANCER 510 CONTRIBUTORS GAVE $3.2 MILLION TO DEFEAT DEADLY BRAIN CANCERS.

HEN JODY JOHNSON had a stroke, help was moments away. The Barrow Emergency Stroke Treatment Unit (BESTU) raced to her house, and within minutes, administered life-saving medication, right in her driveway. BESTU functions like a mobile emergency room with a portable computed tomography (CT) scanner, a CT technician and at least one stroke-certified nurse who can administer clot-busting drugs. The mobile team uses telemedicine technology to work with an on-call stroke physician at Barrow Neurological Institute. Asim Haque, MD, PhD, MPH, managed Jody’s case that fateful day. To show her gratitude to the team that saved her life, Jody returned to Barrow with some homemade cookies and a huge thank you for Richard Hernandez, RN, who took care of her in the BESTU. “There are angels all around us,” says Jody. “I was truly blessed with a team of them who saved and touched my life that night.”

711 DONORS GAVE $10.4 MILLION TO BUILD THE PLACE WHERE THE NEXT CURE WILL BE DISCOVERED.
ISING ON THIRD AVENUE, the Neuroplex at Barrow Neurological Institute is the new home of the world’s leading neuroscience center. This five-story, state-of-the-art, 130,050 square-foot destination will house the entire Department of Neurosurgery, as well as our Neuro-Infusion Suite, Epilepsy Clinic, Neuro-Oncology Clinic, Neuro-Endocrinology Clinic, Barrow Neurological Foundation and more. The Neuroplex will increase laboratory space by 50 percent, positioning it as the place where the next cure is discovered. We broke ground on the Neuroplex on November 14, 2019, with a projected completion in December 2020.
At the ceremonial groundbreaking, patient representatives Ann Glew, Jan Lewis, Sam Schmid and Micah Andrews, joined Robert F. Spetzler, MD, (left) and Barrow Neurological Institute President and CEO Michael T. Lawton, MD, (right) to launch this exciting new chapter in expert patient care, cutting-edge research, and world-class medical education.

YOU’RE NOT ALONE
YOUR IMPACT
T
INA RODRIGUES, 49, met her husband Kevin, 54, at a concert. They shared a dance. That magical moment led to 26 years of marriage. In 2012, Tina noticed Kevin was forgetting things. From car keys to chores to items at the grocery store, Kevin’s memory loss became so pronounced that it eventually led to him losing his job. Overwhelmed and uncertain of her next steps, Tina found her way to Barrow Neurological Institute where the world-class experts in the Alzheimer’s and Memory Disorders Division gave Kevin tests to confirm an Alzheimer’s diagnosis. Then they provided Tina with a wraparound support system. “Barrow gave us absolute support from the moment of the first appointment,” Tina shares. “I can’t imagine going through this without Barrow,” says Tina. “I couldn’t do this alone.” Barrow’s innovative programs have helped Tina cope with becoming a caregiver to her husband. She is no longer navigating this journey on her own. On good days, she and Kevin dance in their kitchen rekindling that magic moment from so many years ago.
IN SEPTEMBER, BARROW BECAME THE FIRST INSTITUTION IN THE WORLD TO IMPLANT A DEEP BRAIN STIMULATOR (DBS) IN AN ALZHEIMER’S PATIENT AS PART OF A PIVOTAL CLINICAL TRIAL EVALUATING WHETHER THIS THERAPY CAN SLOW THE SYMPTOMS OF THE DISEASE. AS SCIENTISTS SEARCH FOR TOMORROW’S TREATMENTS, THE BARROW ALZHEIMER’S AND MEMORY DISORDERS DIVISION LAUNCHED THE “DEMENTIA WITH DIGNITY” HANDBOOK AND A CAREGIVER TOOL KIT TO EMPOWER PATIENTS AND FAMILIES TODAY.
ALZHEIMER’S 376 HEROES GAVE $4.1 MILLION TO FIGHT THE SIXTHLEADING CAUSE OF DEATH IN THE U.S.

YOU GIVE BACK
Grateful Barrow patient Kim Mantle looks forward to sharing more vacations with her husband Matt and their daughters.
A
FTER BARROW NEUROSURGEON Michael T. Lawton, MD, gave Kim Mantle her life back, the young mother of three and her husband Matt were inspired to give back to Barrow.
ANEURYSM AND AVM RESEARCH 464 PEOPLE DONATED $720,794 TO DEFUSE HIDDEN TIME-BOMBS IN THE BRAIN.
Kim had a cavernous malformation above her brainstem. This cluster of small blood vessels is prone to leaking and can cause neurological deficits and death in extreme cases. Kim was told there were five neurosurgeons in the world to be trusted with the surgery. At the top of the list was Dr. Lawton, President and CEO of Barrow Neurological Institute. “I didn’t talk about it with Matt or the girls, but I worried about leaving my family,” Kim says. “Dr. Lawton gave me the opportunity to be with them for years to come.” Thankful for the expert care Kim received, the Mantle family made a donation to the Barrow Aneurysm and Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) Research Center to find treatments for other patients like her.

“W
HEN I ARRIVED AT BARROW and met Dr. Ponce, I learned I would be his 1,000th patient and immediately felt assured that he was the right person to perform this surgery for me. His calm demeanor and outstanding record of success made me feel that I could be in no better hands,”says Stephen Smith, a patient at the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center at Barrow Neurological Institute. Stephen underwent a Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) procedure to treat his symptoms. Francisco Ponce, MD, implanted a DBS device that uses electrical stimulation to correct abnormal rhythms in Stephen’s brain, similar to how a cardiac pacemaker works for the heart. Dr. Ponce, director of the Barrow Center for Neuromodulation, performs more DBS implantations than any other neurosurgeon in the country, and he led the transition from the historical requirement that patients be awake for the operation to a more standardized “asleep” procedure that yields better outcomes for patients like Stephen.
